Thomas Hicks wrote: Looks like they're starting VERY latewhy bother at all? Why don't they add their support to JBoss or JOnAS? Amen. JBoss works beautifully. Stupid to fragment yet again, and this time they aren't even starting from scratch but trying to graft a bunch of stuff together and make it work. I think they are setting themselves up for failure. - Drew -- +-+ < Drew Davidson | OGNL Technology > < Professional Open Source> +-+ | Email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] / |Web: http://www.ognl.org / |Vox: (520) 531-1966 < |Fax: (520) 531-1965\ | Mobile: (520) 405-2967 \ +-+ - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Whoops, later on in the FAQ I see: *Q: What is Elba?* A: Elba is basically an LGPLed snapshot of JBoss (but not called JBoss to avoid lawsuits). Its not really intended to be developed or enhanced - its a temporary code repository of increasingly shrinking code. The idea being for the next (say 1 year) Geronimo by itself isn't gonna be a full J2EE stack. So rather than suffering a Mozilla-style period of lack of use - Elba is a temporary LGPL add-on to Geronimo that Jboss code with Geronimo to provide a full J2EE stack. So from day 1 Geronimo can be used (if so desired) as a full J2EE stack by using the Elba code. ... - Dennis Dennis Sosnoski wrote: Warner Onstine wrote: From what I've read on the incubator site he is the basic breakdown of what they are doing: 1) They will have a snapshot of the Jboss code which will be a full J2EE stack This doesn't appear to match the FAQ statements: *Q: Will it involve JBoss code.* A: No. This is a new Apache project, running under Apache guidelines. This lagged response thing makes for messy email threads. :-) It'll be interesting to see the JBoss/Fleury response to this. I don't see how he can do anything to block it, given that JBoss is GPL, but I'll bet he's not going to be very pleased. Interesting choice of name, Elba - is Fleury by any chance short? Or is it just a reference to his management style? Here's the JBoss official spin on the Apache project: http://www.jboss.org/index.html?module=html&op=userdisplay&id=services/press/apache/080703 - Dennis Warner Onstine wrote: On Sunday, August 10, 2003, at 02:36 PM, Dennis Sosnoski wrote: Warner Onstine wrote: From what I've read on the incubator site he is the basic breakdown of what they are doing: 1) They will have a snapshot of the Jboss code which will be a full J2EE stack This doesn't appear to match the FAQ statements: It's a little further down: Q: What is Elba? Re: [jug-discussion] For those who haven't seen this yet - Apacheannounces J2EE stack
I'm kind of wondering the same, though there are some major differences because of licensing: JBoss is GPL, JOnAS is LGPL. I assume anything done by the Apache group is going to be under the commercial-friendly Apache license. Still, rather than announcing that they're doing a full fledged app server (with no real code to show for it, at present) it seems like it'd have been better to start pulling together all the component pieces first. - Dennis Thomas Hicks wrote: Looks like they're starting VERY latewhy bother at all?
