[kwin] [Bug 455197] Wayland: unlike on X11, launching an app bound to another virtual desktop will switch to that desktop

2022-06-15 Thread Natalie Clarius
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=455197

If I am not mistaken, what makes the difference is that
Workspace::addWaylandWindow calls Workspace::activateWindow which in turn does
the desktop switching (which is target by the related MR), whereas
Workspace::addX11Window does not.

Why it is done that way, what the "right" behavior in this scenario would be
and how to change this without breaking something else, someone more
experienced than me needs to say.

no idea,

the fact that you are using NVidia might be related. Latte is using
Kirigami.Icon for its icons I wouldnt be surprised if something in Kirigami
updates broke the icons implementation in general.

[kalarm] [Bug 455377] New: Akonadi/Kalarm Constant Disk Access & High CPU Usage + Creates 700,000 Files

2022-06-15 Thread Frank James
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=455377

Bug ID: 455377
Summary: Akonadi/Kalarm Constant Disk Access & High CPU Usage +
Creates 700,000 Files
   Product: kalarm
   Version: 2.13.0
  Platform: Ubuntu Packages
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
  Severity: major
  Priority: NOR
 Component: Akonadi
  Assignee: djar...@kde.org
  Reporter: ubu...@ozzyfrank.com
  Target Milestone: ---

SUMMARY
***
After noticing my HD light blinking for no apparent reason, I ran *top* in the
terminal, which revealed 2 *akonadi_kalarm_* processes using 25% CPU each, and
figured this was either reading from or writing to disk (turns out it was
creating a file every second or two). After finding no info on this in regards
to Kalarm online, I found many experiencing a similar thing with Akonadi &
Kmail, so implemented what I learned from those, as well as what I discovered
myself (the following is as succinct as possible, while still giving as much
info as I can):

After halting Akonadi with *akonadictl stop*, then restarting with *akonadictl
start*, the output - which kept repeating in an endless loop - was:

org.kde.pim.akonadiserver: Error while handling command ModifyItems on
connection akonadi_kalarm_resource_1 (0x55c03dbecdd0)
KAlarmResourceCommon::setCollectionCompatibility: 14 -> QFlags(0x2) 0
KAlarmResourceCommon::modifyCollectionJobDone
The hash has changed.
The hash has changed.
KAlarmResourceCommon::setCollectionCompatibility: 26 -> QFlags(0x2) 0
KAlarmResourceCommon::modifyCollectionJobDone
The hash has changed.
The hash has changed.

Ascertaining that the full name of the process show in *top* was
*akonadi_kalarm_resource_1*, I stopped Akonadi, looked in ~/.config/akonadi and
found the file *agent_config_akonadi_kalarm_resource_1_changes.dat*, renamed
it, restarted Akonadi, and that seemed to fix it - the terminal output wasn't
looping, and HD light wasn't blinking. However, after a restart, it was back to
that behaviour, and while that "fix" worked again, since then it doesn't.

Looking online I found mention of deleting ~/.local/share/akonadi/mysql.conf
being a fix - that worked once, but after a reboot that did nothing - back to
constant disk access.

While looking in ~/.local/share/ I noticed 2 folders next to the *akonadi* one
- *akonadi_kalarm_resource_1* and *akonadi_kalarm_resource_5* - both containing
just under 350,000 files (Properties showing each took up 1.6Gb/2.9Gb on disk).
Since I could not open either folder due to the amount of files, running *dir*
revealed many thousands of files all with names like *expired.ics-99500*
numbered sequentially.

After quitting Kalarm I deleted those folders (I'm now in the middle of a 2h40m
process to delete the 699,000 files!), restarted Kalarm, and both those folders
were recreated, and immediately 4.7k files started being created in each, named
*expired.ics-1* upwards (it took only a few seconds for it to create 25 files).
So the hard-drive activity was a constant creation of files, simultaneously in
both those folders, which is endless if Akonadi is running. And that is needed
for Kalarm to function.

Since neither fix worked any more, I installed *akonadiconsole* to see if that
could help. Indeed Akonadi Console revealed that *akonadi_kalarm_resource_1* is
"kalarm" and that *akonadi_kalarm_resource_5* is "Archived Alarms". While
"kalarm" showed *Ready*, with *Type: KAlarm Directory* and *Status: Online,
Idle*, "Archived Alarms" (*Type: KAlarm Calendar File*) was constantly moving
from *Ready* to another state (it was too quick to see, but I think it
mentioned "synchronising"). Right-clicking that agent I saw I could "Abort
Activity", but thought I would try "Restart Agent", and that worked - "Archived
Alarms" now sits quietly on *Ready*, disk activity has stopped, and I can
confirm the files are no longer being created in either folder.

Obviously this is going to start all over again after a reboot, and while I am
hoping Akonadi Console can at least help me stop this, it's obvious this is a
pretty serious bug that needs to be ironed out. And I hope the above info is
enough - if not, let me know what info I can supply. And if anyone knows how to
actually FIX this once and for all, that info would be most welcome!

PS: In the "Component Description" on this page I see "Bugs which apply only to
the Akonadi version of KAlarm". As far as I can see, Kalarm NEEDS Akonadi, but
if there is actually a version which doesn't, then please direct me to it! I
don't use Kmail or any other Akonadi app, only Kalarm, so would prefer to use a
version that doesn't need Akonadi.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Restart system or Kalarm and it is back to this behaviour.

OBSERVED RESULT

No that didn't seem to be the case, but I noticed there were a lot of commits
touching mimetype handling in several KDE frameworks. I wonder if this should
instead be fixed in Okular, like should it list all of it's supported MimeTypes
in it's main .desktop file ala Krita?

[plasmashell] [Bug 455375] New: Possible regression in mimetype handling for recent files

2022-06-15 Thread Joshua Goins

Status: REPORTED
  Severity: minor
  Priority: NOR
 Component: general
  Assignee: plasma-b...@kde.org
  Reporter: j...@redstrate.com
CC: k...@davidedmundson.co.uk
  Target Milestone: 1.0

SUMMARY
In 5.25 (I have not yet tested in earlier versions, but someone on 5.24.5
confimed in #kde that they can't reproduce) Okular fails to list it's own
"Recent Files" in your typical places, such as right-clicking a pinned task on
the task manager applet. The menu is also missing in your typical app launcher
widget. However, Okular seems to still correctly track these, so I suspect it's
something to do with how plasmashell calculates which recent files are
relevant, based on the .desktop MimeTypes. For example, Okular's main .desktop
file only lists "application/vnd.kde.okular-archive".

Note: I mention Okular a lot in this bug report, but this might apply to other
applications too. It's just the easiest to reproduce with :-)

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Open a couple of PDF's in Okular.
2. Notice how they are recorded correctly in Okular itself, and inside of the
"Recent Files" menu located in any other Plasma widget.
3. The same menu (for relevant Okular documents) seem to be missing.

OBSERVED RESULT
No recent files can be found when right-clicking Okular.

EXPECTED RESULT
The relevant document types associated with Okular should show up, but no
"Recent Files" menu even appears.

Please move this into it's relevant category if possible, I'm not exactly sure
which part of the KDE stack actually deals with this specifically.

Git commit 4fbf6d6dc2ed4dd54bf3edf2755e52d54082516f by Eoin O'Neill.
Committed on 16/06/2022 at 03:17.
Pushed by eoinoneill into branch 'master'.

Animated Transforms now respect cropping translations.

NOTE: I'm not happy with how the translation is working as a whole with
transform masks after cropping. E.G. In Alvin's test image, the
circle drawn is roughly 512px units into the canvas. By that logic,
cropping the image should actually move the existing transform keys
to near 0 value. However, the actual translation is by roughly
3000 units. This looks correct visually, but the coordinates make
no sense.

I'll file this as a separate bug. It's not **majorly** important,
but it would be nice to have logical coordinates for a transformation
masks. I think this bug is there on the base transformation mask, but
isn't easily noticable until you have an animated transform mask on
where the translation values suddenly matter more.

Fix Present Windows not working in 5.25 (0.10 branch)

It needed one more change to properly support 5.25 Window View. The original
change correctly implemented the call to Window View, but there was code that
detected whether Present Windows was enabled (which it won't be, in 5.25) and
swallowed the left click before it ever got to the Present Windows call.

I attached a simple 1-line patch (against the latest 0.10 git branch) to
correctly detect 5.25 Window View and allow the call to proceed. I'm not
currently set up to submit MRs for Latte Dock, plus I'm not sure if there's a
better way to implement that check - the nested conditionals are getting a bit
convoluted.

Oh that's a good systemd-compatible alternative method. Unfortunately its
user-specific and not selectable (current userbase method of having a separate
xsession allows selection during login). So a bit less flexibility.

Agree with your comments on the other bug report - since kwin/plasmashell
aren't really separable in wayland this usecase will naturally fall by the
wayside over time (which answers my initial question). Hopefully by then the
tiling plugins for KDE are better.

Do you have a nice referer for the debug symbol stuff?
I haven't tried it so I need an guidance.

Let me try, first, the same version of appimage alternative.
By the way, where can I get the appimage file v5.0.8?
I'd like to keep the constaints as tight as possible for the bug reproduction,
hence the same version.
I see only v5.0.6 at https://krita.org/en/download/krita-desktop/

[plasmashell] [Bug 353975] Black screen on second display (no wallpaper, can't get a context menu on right-click)

Ok, it seems that the plasma-workspace hack seems to improve things, but the
qt-hack doesn't. Still this is just an observation from one time merging the
Qt-Hack, and another time merging the Plasma-hack.

ATM, it seems that the plasma-hack - after a while, say 5 seconds -
enable the Plasma-thing to "recover". At least it seems that I _may_ have
(sometimes???) usable screens on each of my two monitors after either manually
switching them off or waiting for the power save.

Still: there are many annoying things: windows are relocated to the other
monitor, their size changes wildly. For that "primary display" feature: I do
not understand: the control panel is always located on the "non-primary"
monitor. Desktop icons are always located on the "primary" monitor. What is the
reasoning behind? What exactly is meant by "primary monitor"?

[amarok] [Bug 455371] New: CD Reports 0 Tracks in Amarok

2022-06-15 Thread Russell
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=455371

Bug ID: 455371
Summary: CD Reports 0 Tracks in Amarok
   Product: amarok
   Version: 2.9.71
  Platform: Other
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
 Component: Collections/CD
  Assignee: amarok-bugs-d...@kde.org
  Reporter: rdragonr...@gmail.com
  Target Milestone: kf5

Created attachment 149769
  --> https://bugs.kde.org/attachment.cgi?id=149769=edit
Run log of Amarok not detecting CD tracks

SUMMARY
***
NOTE: If you are reporting a crash, please try to attach a backtrace with debug
symbols.
See
https://community.kde.org/Guidelines_and_HOWTOs/Debugging/How_to_create_useful_crash_reports
***
I've bought some CDs, and I was trying to put them on my MP3 player. However,
Amarok, while it detects the presence of a CD, can't seem to actually find the
tracks. Other ripping tools will display the presence of tracks, although of
those, at this point, only SoundJuicer appears able to get metadata. I've also
tried several CDs by different artists, etc.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Insert a CD with Amarok open
2. Look at the media entry for the CD
3. It says there are 0 tracks on the CD, and it can't be played or ripped.

OBSERVED RESULT
0 tracks are listed for the CD.

EXPECTED RESULT
I was expecting the appropriate number of tracks.

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Linux/KDE Plasma: Ubuntu 20.04 LTS 64-bit, gnome 3.36
KDE Plasma Version: N/A?
Qt: 5.12.8
KDE Frameworks: 5.68.0
kf5-config: 1.0

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
I am using the PGomes PPA for my Amarok build, but this bug was also present
with the official package in Ubuntu 18.04 as well.

Example script, launching XMonad as the Window Manager

SUMMARY
(Sorry if this is not in the right section, I'm not 100% sure where this bug
falls)
In previous versions of KDE Plasma, setting the KDEWM environment variable to
another Window Manager on your system would force Plasma to spawn that as the
Window Manager in place of Kwin. Since 5.25, no matter what method is used to
set the environment variable.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Install and set up an alternative Window Manager of choice for use with KDE
Plasma (X11)
2. Set the KDEWM environment variable using a pre-startup script in
~/.config/plasma-workspace/env/

OBSERVED RESULT
KDE Plasma spawns Kwin

EXPECTED RESULT
KDE Plasma spawns the specified Window Manager

[plasmashell] [Bug 455231] Task manager window thumbnails missing on x11

2022-06-15 Thread Nate Graham
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=455231

I agree. Of course someone needs to write write those tests or perform them
manually. :)

Effort doesn't appear out of thin air; people work on stuff that they either
feel passionate about or are paid to work on. At this point, most of the
passion and money that I see are in the direction of Wayland, rightly or
wrongly. So if folks want to see more and better maintenance of the X11
session, it will require a similar injection of passion or money.

The fact that KWin dying takes your apps is indeed quite unpleasant and makes
it not prodution-ready, but you may be happy to hear that it's been an active
area of work for over two years. The extended timeframe on this is because it
turns out to be extraordinarily difficult to do--as perhaps evidenced by the
fact that we never got this for the X11 display server. To this day it still
takes all of your apps with it when it crashes or gets killed. Of course you
may say that KWin is more likely to crash than Xorg is, and today that's
probably true. But I hear horror stories from long-time FOSS users that the X
server wasn't always a rock of stability either. :) Things get better over
time.

[kwin] [Bug 455197] Wayland: unlike on X11, launching an app bound to another virtual desktop will switch to that desktop

2022-06-15 Thread Natalie Clarius
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=455197

The related thing mentioned in the previous comment is
https://invent.kde.org/plasma/kwin/-/merge_requests/2201, bug report
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=438375

XFCE has this with "Do nothing" as a third option:
https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/97918/stop-browser-window-from-switching-workspace-and-getting-focus-when-opening-a-li/98432#98432
I suppose one could do that here too.

The setting I just talked about here is about window *activation*. I don't know
if *addition* of a window in the scenario described in the OP also triggers
activation or which parts of it exactly, and what is responsible for the
different behavior between X11 and Wayland. I can try to look into it.

For those who would prefer the desktop not to switch, if such a "Do nothing"
setting were to take effect not only on newly launched windows, but also cases
where an already existing window on a different desktop gets activated, would
this be a problem ?

the application style. So, when I select "Fusion" in Settings > Global theme >
Application Style, the issue is gone. But when I switch back to "Breeze" (I
think the default) the progress bar becomes vertical...

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

[kalendar] [Bug 455369] New: Calendar event notifications lead to segfault if closed by notification button

2022-06-15 Thread Christian
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=455369

Bug ID: 455369
Summary: Calendar event notifications lead to segfault if
closed by notification button
   Product: kalendar
   Version: unspecified
  Platform: Fedora RPMs
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
  Keywords: drkonqi
  Severity: crash
  Priority: NOR
 Component: general
  Assignee: claudio.cam...@gmail.com
  Reporter: k...@fuchsnet.ch
CC: c...@carlschwan.eu
  Target Milestone: ---

Application: kalendarac (5.20.2)

Qt Version: 5.15.3
Frameworks Version: 5.95.0
Operating System: Linux 5.17.13-300.fc36.x86_64 x86_64
Windowing System: X11
Distribution: Fedora Linux 36 (KDE Plasma)
DrKonqi: 5.25.0 [KCrashBackend]

-- Information about the crash:
Calender events that were previously handled by korgac now create regular
notifications, which do provide a button to dismiss them. However, whenever I
dismiss one via said button, the application crashes with a segfault. See
attached bug report.

The crash can be reproduced every time.

-- Backtrace:
Application: Erinnerungen (kalendarac), signal: Segmentation fault

I use my own theme to test this (git master branch of
https://github.com/paulmcauley/classik which has the API implemented).

The main problem I found is that on Wayland, blurred corners are quite aliased
( https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=453229 ).

It's PNG. I never changed the setting.
I also wonder about why JP2 format is used. But I couldn't find a clue in the
code.
