missing debug symbols for the following lines that we need to figure out

I don't know exactly what the debug symbol package name for plasma-workspace is

Those floating-point values look suspect. Does manually setting them to
integer values (767 and 688) help? If not or if it doesn't stick, try the
following...

This bug has been around awhile, but there was a workaround I initially
described in https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=389141 that (with a bit of
updating) presumably still works (see below):

With the plasmoids in the desired location (either with the ItemGeometries
lines deleted or with them set as desired, not sure which), set
plasma-org.kde.plasma.desktop-appletsrc (normally found in ~/.config unless you
set $XDG_CONFIG_HOME) read-only. This should prevent it from being
overwritten with the bad config but unfortunately you'll still need to manually
restart the initially started mixed-up plasmashell (plasmashell --replace,
unfortunately at each login, tho it can be scripted as described below) in
ordered to get it to take, since that initial start is what goes haywire.

You can try the --replace from krunner. If that works as I expect it will,
automate it with a script set to autostart (see the autostart
kcontrol/systemsettings module), with a few seconds sleep to let the system
stabilize before the --replace command.

Of course with the desktop-appletsrc file set readonly reconfiguring things
will work only for that plasmshell session so you'll have to remember to toggle
it back read-writable if you want to reconfigure...

(I believe the bug trigger here was a multi-monitor setup with different
resolutions for each monitor, one full-HD one 4K. When I upgraded to
matching-resolution 4Ks it stopped triggering for me so I've not seen the bug
in awhile. Thus the "presumably still works" qualification above.)

Thank you for the bug report! It does indeed sound like Plasma is crashing and

Can you specify *exactly* how you set the caps lock key up to switch layouts?

I ask because I have used the Advanced tab of the Keyboard page to use my caps
lock key to be the Compose key, and when doing it this way, it no longer
functions as a caps lock key at all and thus doesn't trigger the widget's
detection. This is probably the kind thing you want to do as well.

That's part of it. In kcmkwin/kwindesktop/virtualdesktops.cpp, changing

to

makes the button appear, but clicking on it takes you to a "page not found"
message. So something else is also not wired up correctly.

Maybe you can figure out how the existing doc path is specified in another KCM
that has it working, and see what's missing for the VIrtual Desktops KCM's
code?

I would tend to agree.

After a bit of investigation, it appears that the brackets are added by KUIT
formatting when wrapping something in tags; those tags become
brackets. This should be fixed generically in KLocalizedString.

Looking at these screenshots, it seems like there is something wrong with the
scaling configuration on your system that is causing the issue. Please report:
- Whether you're using X11 or Wayland
- The scale factor you've set in System Settings > Display & Monitor, of any
- Your font DPI, and whether you've manually changed it from the default value
- Your font sizes, if you've changes them from any default values
- Your icon sizes, if you've changes them from any default values.

If you don't mind, please refrain from filing any other similar bug reports
about bad paddings until we've established how your system is set up, because
it's quite possible you're using an incompatible set of settings that is
causing the issue here, such that correcting it will fix the issue everywhere
else you're seeing it, too.

Discover uses the PackageKit library for this; it's up to either PackageKit or
the underlying package management backend to be more resilient to this type of
condition.

Ideally the actual package servers would be more reliable too.

Huh? If the current version of the stable OS is Kubuntu 20.04 and the version

I can also resolve the problem by entirely removing the "ItemGeometries" line
and leaving the "ItemGeometriesHorizontal" line. However, again, this line is
recreated at login, and if left at logout, the widget will again "wander" and
then snap. So something about the two entries coexisting is causing things to
go wrong.

I believe I've located the source of this bug. Using a clean install of Kubuntu
22.04 in a virtual machine with a screen resolution of 2560x1600.

In /home/user/.config/plasma-org.kde.plasma.desktop-appletsrc:

> [Containments][1]
> ItemGeometries-2560x1600=Applet-24:767.806,688.073,224,208,0;
> ItemGeometriesHorizontal=Applet-24:767.806,688.073,224,208,0;

>
> [Containments][1][Applets][24]
> immutability=1
> plugin=org.kde.plasma.notifications
>
> [Containments][1][Applets][24][Configuration]
> PreloadWeight=6

"Applet-24" is a Notifications widget that I've plopped somewhere in the middle
of the desktop.
If I log out and log back in at this point, I watch the widget initially render
where it belongs. It then appears to "wander" around (moving very noticeably
all on its own), then suddenly snaps to the edge of the screen (usually into
the lower-right corner). I think I'm capturing this movement because I'm using
a VM.

If I remove the "ItemGeometriesHorizontal" line entirely from the file, then
save it, close everything (but leave the widget in the middle of the screen),
then log out and log back in, the widget stays where it was left last time.

However, the "ItemGeometriesHorizontal" line appears to be automatically
recreated, and if I log out and log back in again without modifying the file,
the widget again "wanders" then snaps into the wrong location. I have attempted
to and succeeded in reproducing this behavior twice. This leads me to believe
that the "ItemGeometriesHorizontal" entry is the source of the problem.

[KDE MediaWiki] [Bug 458903] New: "wgPageName not defined" JavaScript error from site JavaScript on techbase and userbase wikis

2022-09-08 Thread skierpage
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=458903

Bug ID: 458903
Summary: "wgPageName not defined" JavaScript error from site
JavaScript on techbase and userbase wikis
   Product: KDE MediaWiki
   Version: unspecified
  Platform: unspecified
OS: All
Status: REPORTED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
 Component: general
  Assignee: schwanc...@protonmail.com
  Reporter: skierp...@gmail.com
  Target Milestone: ---

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Open browser's developer console
2. Visit any page on those web sites, e.g.
https://userbase.kde.org/Welcome_to_KDE_UserBase
3. Append ?debug=true and reload

OBSERVED RESULT
The Firefox browser console shows
Uncaught ReferenceError: wgPageName is not defined

If you append ?debug=true (see
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/ResourceLoader/Architecture#Debug_mode ), the
concatenated but uncompressed JavaScript reveals the broken code is from
https://techbase.kde.org/MediaWiki:Common.js where you can have wiki-specific
code, and indeed this has
   if (wgPageName == "Special:Search") //scripts specific to Special:Search
  {
  importScript("MediaWiki:Common.js/search.js") |
importScript("MediaWiki:Common.js/search.js")
  }

EXPECTED RESULT
No error. MediaWiki has deprecated global wg variables for a decade, see
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/ResourceLoader/Migration_guide_(users)#Global_wg_variables.

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
N/A

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
I can't fix this because editing https://techbase.kde.org/MediaWiki:Common.js
(wisely!) restricted to users in some special group.

https://community.kde.org/MediaWiki:Common.js doesn't have this code, or
seemingly any site JavaScript.

I think the rest of the JavaScript in common.js isn't loaded, so probably the
search script https://userbase.kde.org/MediaWiki:Common.js/search.js isn't
loaded; I think it wants to add searches of the kde wiki using "Windows Live"
and other search engines. Fixing this bug is trivial, probably just replace
with `mw.config.get('wgPageName') ` instead, but I think that will just lead to
more JavaScript errors (e.g. wgUserGroups on userbase will also fail). Since
search is working fine it's probably safest to remove all the JavaScript. The
JavaScript was added to techbase and userbase by user Danimo back in 2009, and
then user Nikerabbit tweaked it on userbase in 2011.

Git commit e2889c86fc88ea2d62faaf00348f70a47c13 by Aleix Pol Gonzalez.
Committed on 09/09/2022 at 01:13.
Pushed by apol into branch 'master'.

inputmethod: Allow forcing the display of the input method

Adds support to the new information offered by KWin. Now it can tell us
that the current client doesn't support Wayland input methods.

Therefore, it sets the plasmoid in a new "unsupported" state that will
offer to force an activation when triggered. KWin will then be able to
emulate a keyboard and it all should work to some extent.

Depends on https://invent.kde.org/plasma/kwin/-/merge_requests/2907
