[systemsettings] [Bug 462299] [Feature Request] Map Caps Lock to do nothing, instead of outright disabling

2022-11-26 Thread bugzilla_noreply
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=462299

--- Comment #1 from spamless.9v...@simplelogin.com ---
Actually, it might be slightly more complicated - some programs will register
Caps Lock in this state, but others don't, so some sort of catcher program that
translates the input might be needed.

Although this might be something that should be delegated downstream to Valve
and Proton to handle.

plasmarunner: do not install translator in runner

QCoreApplication::installTranslator() will cause all QML bindings to be
refreshed, which will cause a noticable delay when searching in
Kickoff/KRunner. Remove the custom translator and use ki18n instead.

[kscreenlocker] [Bug 440350] Screen never locks automatically

2022-11-26 Thread John Bennett
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=440350

Back after being away. Don't recall playing with anything before going away,
but on return, screen locking again not working.
On checking the ~/.config/kscreenlockerrc file, contains:

[$Version]
update_info=kscreenlocker.upd:0.1-autolock

[Daemon]
LockGrace=10
*

So, correcting things again, all is working, and, yes, clicking 'Defaults' does
again break it...

The verbose DRM dmesg log shows that all configurations tried by kwin fail the
kernel drm_atomic_plane_check, specifically the plane_switching_crtc sanity
check [1], meaning that kwin triggers unsupported direct switching of CRTCs.
Any ideas why that may happen?

msm_dpu ae01000.display-controller: [drm:drm_atomic_check_only]
[PLANE:41:plane-0] switching CRTC directly
msm_dpu ae01000.display-controller: [drm:drm_atomic_check_only]
[PLANE:41:plane-0] atomic core check failed

I also noticed that above kwin_wayland_drm output says `"rotation": 1` and
`"rotation"=invalid value: 1`. @vladz uploaded a log containing `"rotation": 1`
at https://invent.kde.org/-/snippets/1976 Any ideas if that is the root-cause?

[okular] [Bug 462295] New: Boxes instead of text displayed for parts of PDF file

2022-11-26 Thread Fabian
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=462295

Bug ID: 462295
Summary: Boxes instead of text displayed for parts of PDF file
Classification: Applications
   Product: okular
   Version: 22.08.3
  Platform: Archlinux
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
 Component: PDF backend
  Assignee: okular-de...@kde.org
  Reporter: vo...@gmx.de
  Target Milestone: ---

SUMMARY
***
Crossed out boxes displayed instead of text for the attached file from
https://www.wahlen-berlin.de/Wahlen/BE2016/afspraes/download/SB_B07-02-03_2016j05_BE.pdf
***

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Download PDF from
https://www.wahlen-berlin.de/Wahlen/BE2016/afspraes/download/SB_B07-02-03_2016j05_BE.pdf
2. Open the file with okular
3.

OBSERVED RESULT
Red and black crossed out boxes are displayed on most pages of the file, but
text can be copied to the clipboard without problems. The only missing type 1
font is Helvetica, which was first replaced by Nimbus Sans on my system, but
after installation of Helvetica.pbf from the net and a restart of okular
(Healvetica.pbf was then used instead), the result is the same. All other fonts
are at least partial included in the file.

EXPECTED RESULT
Text in the file is displayed on all pages.

Worth noting that KDE Neon 22.04 now has a much newer version of Poppler
(22.09.0-0xneon+22.04+jammy+release+build3) and I can now open both the PDF I
was having trouble with and the example that Gustavo provided; so the specific
circumstances that prompted this bug report appear to have been resolved.

I haven't checked the Okular source to see if similar problems would still
result in an equally unhelpful error message, though.

Have just confirmed that this appears to be resolved in Neon built on 22.04;
the version of Poppler is much newer
(22.09.0-0xneon+22.04+jammy+release+build3, maintained by "Neon CI"; I guess
this means that in 22.04 Poppler is updated by KDE on top of the Ubuntu LTS
base?) and the PDF I was having trouble with now opens fine.

SUMMARY
Hello, I do my usual programming on KDE wayland with Qt Creator, and
frequently, I have either Qt Creator that crashes or my graphics stack. When
the later happens, the screen goes dark and I cannot even switch TTYs and I
need to hard restart my laptop.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
I do not have a 100% procedure to reproduce the crashes

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Linux/KDE Plasma: Archlinux

KDE Plasma Version: 5.26.3
KDE Frameworks Version: 5.100.0
Qt Version: 6.4.1 and 5.15.7

with Optimus and Mux Switch : Nvidia RTX 3060 dGPU and AMD 680M iGPU. The
plasma workspace runs on the iGPU on the radeonsi driver.

I also had several amdgpu kernel crashes, that I unfortunately do not have any
longer, but I still have stack traces.

Amazing! Here's the instruction manual just there. :) Yes that MR will do (the
code change seemed pretty simple too!), blur and growing icons were examples to
better understand what I meant by "alternatives to the faint icon glow". I
customized my panel to leverage the icon backgrounds in various states so I
will want to keep consistency in my theme here as well. Having, maybe one day,
more hover feedbacks as you point out, would provide more alternatives to the
user, I personally like the idea.

I'll follow this closely, thank you!

[plasmashell] [Bug 462253] Icons-Only Task Manager "glow icons on mouse hover for closed applications" alternatives

2022-11-26 Thread veggero
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=462253

> Ok so then I understand there is a merge request already for my feature
> suggestion?

Correct: With
https://invent.kde.org/plasma/plasma-desktop/-/merge_requests/1265 applied
(hopefully in the next plasma version), you should be able to add an element
called "launcher-hover-*" (where * is top, topright, etc) similarly to the
existing "hover-*" elements in the tasks.svg file of the plasma theme that I
think you already saw ("much like an SVG form, which is used say for normal,
hover, focused, etc"). This will allow you to set some kind of more visible
background, with whatever look you prefer. (Unluckily, blur is not something
that our SVG viewer supports).

This doesn't change Breeze *by default*, so it does require changing the Plasma
Theme; however I'm not against adding some more hover feedback for launchers as
well, it's something that could be discussed with the community.

The other solution - making the icons bigger, similar to Latte Dock - is much
more complex to implement, especially if we had to draw the icons outside of
the panel area, as Latte does; I would prefer to keep that complexity in Latte,
to maintain Plasma Panels as simple (and bug-free) as possible.

  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
 Component: general
  Assignee: plasma-b...@kde.org

SUMMARY
Drop-down menus don't work in some applications. This seems to be related to
the theme applied by KDE.
The only example I have is `monero-wallet-gui` (a QML application), but I wrote
'some applications' because I assume that there are other applications I'm not
aware of that are also affected.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Start `monero-wallet-gui` on KDE

OBSERVED RESULT
The drop-down menu doesn't expand.

EXPECTED RESULT
The drop-down menu expands.

You obviously support! But support or not, it just shows that somehow render is
broken.

And there would be no problem at all if ktexteditor will just adopt application
backgound. Now if we set text area background to full transparent, (#)
to avoid double filling background in lines, ktexteditor view become
transparent with desktop background. Included screenshot!

[systemsettings] [Bug 462291] New: Ability to manage systemd units

systemd settings

SUMMARY
Sooner or later KDE users needs to manage systemd units usint systemctl or
create a new unit for their own workflow. Right now there is no option in
system settings to do that and have to rely on command line solutions to make
that happen. Many users have asked the same question and some info is in this
url
https://askubuntu.com/questions/1030850/is-there-a-gui-tool-for-managing-systemd-on-ubuntu-18-04-bionic-beaver
In the solutions one is promising which is https://github.com/KDE/systemdgenie
I have installed in and the screenshot is also provided (kde-config-sysemd)
I hope this is added by default in system settings or else better integrate
into Background Services menu which makes sense for the activity.
This package gives a basic ability to deal with systemd services but its out of
place with KDE design and if KDE integrates into system settings it could be
even better.

If this package is not maintained and cannot be incorporated into KDE then what
would be KDE way to solve the issue of managing system units using GUI

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Open System Settings
2. Go to background services menu item
3. Try to manage systemd units

OBSERVED RESULT
No way to manage systemd units

EXPECTED RESULT
Expected to find a way to manage services in background services section or a
different section for systemd

[kwin] [Bug 462290] New: A window should not be moved to the top on a mouse down event when the event results in a selection

2022-11-26 Thread Luca Carlon
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=462290

Bug ID: 462290
Summary: A window should not be moved to the top on a mouse
down event when the event results in a selection
Classification: Plasma
   Product: kwin
   Version: 5.26.3
  Platform: Other
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
 Component: glx
  Assignee: kwin-bugs-n...@kde.org
  Reporter: carlon.l...@gmail.com
  Target Milestone: ---

SUMMARY
This is a pretty bothering behavior of Plasma. When something is selected in a
window that is not on top, that window is brought to the top immediately on the
mouse down event. This creates a problem: when something is being selected to
be dragged to the window on top, the mouse down event hides the window
immediately, making it impossible to drop the selected object. Both Mac OS and
Windows do not behave like this, and I think this should be the proper
behavior.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Place a dolphin window somewhere and make it pretty large.
2. Open a new dolphin window and make it smaller, overlapping the previous one.
3. Now try to move a file from the first window (which is not on top) into the
smaller widow (which is on top).

OBSERVED RESULT
The result is that the smaller window is hidden as soon as the file is
selected. This makes it impossible to drop on it.

EXPECTED RESULT
In my opinion, the window in the back should not be moved to the top on mouse
down event on selection. The mouse down event should select the file in the
back window, but the top window should remain on top. This makes it possible to
drop on it.

Wayland core dump

SUMMARY

I have 2 AsusTek display port monitors connected to a Radeon 6600XT graphics
adapter via DisplayPort.

Everything is fine, unless I leave the machine until the lock screen displays
and the monitors power off.

When I come back and move the mouse, kwin_wayland crashes and all closed apps
dissapear. After this the session is pretty much unsable and is just a blank
black screen.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Connect 2 display port monitors to a Radeon graphics adapter
2. Leave the machine until the monitors power off after the lock screen is
displayed
3. Move the mouse, kwin_wayland core dumps

OBSERVED RESULT

kwin_wayland core dumps on monitor wakeup

EXPECTED RESULT

No core dumping and safe wakeup.

I'm having the exact same problem than here and for
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=377493, I'm attaching the examples for my
exact case. The music sheet I'm joining seems to be a transcript of music I
don't own, and I don't have any permission from the author either so here is
the link to the video that links to the said file
(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HL4dLPhsFi0).
As you can see in the comparison photos (librewolf/firefox on the left, okular
on the right), it is very difficult to distinguish a note that's on a line and
above the line in some cases (the document is at fault too, but it is
especially troubling with okular). The problem arises as long as I try to
arrange a page on half my monitor, that is 1600 x 600 aspect ratio, and
disappears if I try to view the document with a bigger zoom.
I could gladly test the proposed patch, but it seems unable to be merged, so
I'll leave it to you until there's a new update on this.
Thanks for your hard work !

SUMMARY
Add an option to sort applications by installed date. It adds more sense to
users to sort it by installed date.
A typical use case is, a user installed an application and didn't liked it and
want to uninstall and when they goes into installed apps they have to search
through all apps and then uninstall it. But if we have an option to sort by
installed date then they can sort it and they find it first in the list and it
would be easy to find their recent installed apps.

[systemsettings] [Bug 462285] Cannot switch to another keyboard layout on Wayland

2022-11-26 Thread Andrey
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=462285

Do you see a layout applet in systray, what happens if you click on it?
What happens if you press the switching shortcut?
Do you have IBus packages installed? (you shouldn't)

Did you try to ask about your problem on some support forum, chat? Why do you
think it's a bug?

I'm seeing the same effect in a legacy GTK2 app where the app colors aren't
reflecting the system dark mode yet it is using dark mode icons in the buttons,
which look nearly invisible. Sorry, I don't have a test app to reference, it's
not in any repos.

I tried to add additional keyboard layouts on Wayland.
But I was unable to switch to another layout, like French and in addition US.

So in comparison to Gnome.
I can see my custom keyboard in KDE but not in Gnome...
Gnome supports $XDG_CONFIG_HOME/xkb
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/-/merge_requests/936 but it is a hack
However, it is straightforward to switch between several (standard) layouts on
Gnome.

screenshot of gBurner on Windows 7

Can reproduce with K3b 22.12 RC. I have tested a burning software called
gBurner on Windows 7 for comparison purposes and, as we can see in the attached
screenshot, it does not try to simulate a burning if the used disc contains
data. I think K3b could behave in the same way. Performing a real erasing when
'Simulate' option is checked seems unexpected/confusing and
can result in unexpected data loss.

I've the same issue, same hardware.

The screen stays black for me seemingly forever and fairly consistent on each
boot.
The only way I can avoid this problem, so weird it seems, is to open a tty2
after the GUI login in screen is visible, login via tty2 and execute any
command with sudo.
Afterwards, the GUI login and KDE works flawlessly.

For the record, SDL could use this as well, as currently the Wayland
mode-switching emulation stretches everything to the display dimensions, which
distorts things (especially on ultrawide displays). Attempts to implement
aspect-correct scaling with subsurfaces were made, but were dropped as they
proved too buggy to be usable across all desktops. Now that almost all
compositors center and mask around fullscreen windows, this can be revisited,
but KWin missing support means that it either couldn't be enabled by default,
or KDE would need to be detected and fall back to stretching the image instead
of using the correct aspect ratio.
