Also note that, as shown by screenshot2, at certain size, folder icons seem to
resolve to either symbolic versions or not. And the folder-desktop icon
resolves to the smallest 16px version. While as shown by the screenshot3, it
resolves to the 22px version at a smaller size, so that's weird.

[KPipeWire] [Bug 478086] plasmashell crashed sometimes in QtWaylandClient::QWaylandWindow::createDecoration when hovering over task manager icons

Valgrind log from trying to reproduce plasmashell crash by hovering over task
manager icons

I saw plasmashell crash with this type of trace in Plasma 5.90.0 when I
disabled WiFi in the Plasma NetworkManager applet then clicked off of the
applet to close it. This crash didn't usually happen when doing so.

I ran plasmashell under valgrind and reproduced the crash as before. The error
The Wayland connection broke. Did the Wayland compositor die? was shown in
Konsole so the crash might've been due to that different reason. The window
previews for konsole and other running programs weren't shown when run under
valgrind, but the popups with just their names were shown. There were many
invalid reads which looked to be buffer overreads. The ones involving
KSvg::SvgPrivate::createRenderer might be more likely to be involved with the
window preview popups. I'm attaching the valgrind log.

While the fan issue fixed the slowness, I still find it constantly locking up

And the laptop lid issue that I opened up isn't resolved yet.

I tried both engine and same behaviour.
For other reply, it seems that solution will be available in next release.

I am experiencing the same issue with Krita 5.2.2 and Krita 5.1.5

There was a very similar issue last month
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=477766
The past bug was able to be fixed by installing libnvidia-egl-wayland1.

I have found uninstalling this library fixes the issue for me, and the Krita UI
works fine. Installing it again results in this bug again.
However, without this library most games fail to boot with the NVidia 545
driver, so this is unacceptable.

Downgrading to the NVidia 535 driver also results in a fix to this issue.
However, only the 545 driver properly supports VRR on my machine, so
downgrading to 535 is unacceptable. This is likely acceptable to others
experiencing this issue until a fix is found.

As far as I am aware, libnvidia-egl-wayland1 has had no changes made to its
repos between this and the previous thread.

I was experiencing this issue on Plasma 5.27.8 and Framework 5.110.0, and
upgraded to backports in attempt to fix it, and there was no change.

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS:
Linux/KDE Plasma: Kubuntu 23.10 (with backports)
KDE Plasma Version: 5.27.10
KDE Frameworks Version: 5.112.0
Qt Version: 5.15.10
Graphics platform: Wayland

[kwin] [Bug 478915] New: Continuous CPU load after X11 login

2023-12-22 Thread Jakob Petsovits
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=478915

Bug ID: 478915
Summary: Continuous CPU load after X11 login
Classification: Plasma
   Product: kwin
   Version: 5.91.0
  Platform: Other
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
 Component: general
  Assignee: kwin-bugs-n...@kde.org
  Reporter: jpe...@petsovits.com
  Target Milestone: ---

Created attachment 164388

Flamegraph SVG of kwin_x11 at a constant but not debilitating load

SUMMARY
Logged into my Plasma 6.0 Beta dev session (built two days after Beta 2) and
the fans started spinning. On an 8-core Intel Core i7-8565U, ThinkPad X1 Carbon
Gen 7 laptop with iGPU, ksysguard showed a constant 13%-14% of CPU usage for
kwin_x11 and 4%-5% for picom. So it didn't quite incapacitate the system, and
cursor overlays were fluid but window moves were at an estimated <5 FPS.

I don't have a full stacktrace, but I used
https://github.com/flamegraph-rs/flamegraph to capture a few seconds of
constant load and generate a flamegraph SVG. Find the SVG attached. It looks
like debuginfod was not used because the system-level libraries don't show
function-level info. Sorry. I figure the actual perf.data output is also not
useful outside of my system, but I have it sitting here for a few days until I
rebuild kwin again sometime.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Log into a KF6 X11 session.
2. Get lucky, notice high system load.
3. ???
4. `perf` it!

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Operating System: Arch Linux
KDE Plasma Version: 5.91.90
KDE Frameworks Version: 5.248.0
Qt Version: 6.6.1
Kernel Version: 6.6.3-arch1-1 (64-bit)
Graphics Platform: X11
Processors: 8 × Intel® Core™ i7-8565U CPU @ 1.80GHz
Memory: 15.3 GiB of RAM
Graphics Processor: Mesa Intel® UHD Graphics 620
Manufacturer: LENOVO
Product Name: 20QD001VUS
System Version: ThinkPad X1 Carbon 7th

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
* The session I had previously logged into was a Plasma 5.27.9 session on X11.
(Picked the wrong X11 SDDM entry because usually this user account is reserved
for Plasma 6 only.)
* Upon logout from the CPU-intensive KF6 X11 session, SDDM did not come back
and the screen stayed black. Probably unrelated as it also happened after the
next session.
* Following a hard reboot, I logged into the same KF6/X11 Plasma session again
to see if the issue is always reproducible. It is not, CPU load was nice and
low now.

Did you mean journalctl -b? It is almost 15,000 lines, and I am getting an
error when I tried to include it in my reply- bugs.kde.org thinks that it is
spam (not surprising). Xorg.0.log is about 750 lines, as well. I am going to
add them both as attachments. I am using an AMD Radeon Pro WX3200 series GPU.

SUMMARY
I noticed that the "Send to device" option available in context menu of Dolphin
stopped work.
My PC is paired correctly with my smartphone by KDE Connect - in this

systray.
Looking at error message, seems kdeconnectplugin_config.qml is broken (not
ported correctly).
Please check screenshot with error message.

What I see on login

SUMMARY
So, I log in, and KDE Crash Handler reports that startplasma-x11 died due to a
segmentation fault. The desktop works normally, until I close the crash handler
window, at which point Plasma crashes within a few seconds, throwing me back
out to SDDM.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Log in.
2. Close the appearing crash handler window.

OBSERVED RESULT
Plasma is ded.

EXPECTED RESULT
Plasma is not ded (and the crash handler never shows up in the first place).

[plasmashell] [Bug 478096] Cannot tell if window is snapped to panel - borderless window decoration usability

2023-12-22 Thread Jakob Petsovits

I logged into the wrong X11 session (KF5) and that's why Spectacle worked. But
with shadows restored, the window's bottom edge appears to look identical to
the screenshots I took. So I still stand to everything I wrote above.

Summary: Resizing snapped windows does not work when window
touches a panel
Classification: Plasma
   Product: kwin
   Version: 5.27.9
  Platform: Other
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
 Component: general
  Assignee: kwin-bugs-n...@kde.org
  Reporter: jpe...@petsovits.com
  Target Milestone: ---

SUMMARY
A window that gets resized taller to touch my bottom panel can not be decreased
in height after letting go of the mouse press. Probably the same as Bug 429571
but I don't know if there's any difference between quick-tiled windows and
regularly resized windows in that respect, so I'll open a new bug.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Take any small window that's less tall than the current desktop.
2. Drag the bottom resize handle right down to the edge of a bottom panel, to
make it snap.
3. Drop the handle, let go of your mouse/touchpad press.
4. Try grabbing the bottom window edge again to make it smaller, because you've
changed your mind about the height.

OBSERVED RESULT
There's nowhere you can grab the bottom window edge now. If you're lucky, maybe
you have a few pixels around the window corners where you get a diagonal resize
handle. That's not good enough for decent usability.

EXPECTED RESULT
I can pick up the bottom resize handle where I dropped it.

> With Bug 477884 fixed, all windows touching the panel--snapped, maximized,
> or otherwise--should get a little shadow cast on them. Can you confirm that?
> It's intended that the shadow is the visual marker for the bottom of a
> window that's touching a bottom panel.

Yes, the shadow is back. It looks good. It also doesn't fix the issue I
described. I'd like to rename the bug back to its original title or something
like it.

Let me try explaining it with a screenshot quiz because the original textual
description apparently didn't convey it well enough. (Now that KAuth is working
for me again, I have Spectacle back at least on the X11 session.) I will attach
two screenshots with Firefox showing this bug report page.

a) In one screenshot, the Firefox window is much taller than the actual screen
at hand. (The captured screen is my bottom screen, I dragged it down from my
much taller monitor.)
b) In the other screenshot, the bottom of the Firefox window is snapped to the
panel edge, so the entirety of its view is on screen.

Which is which?

(This is a trick question. The answer is you cannot tell. My problem with the
window presentation is that there isn't a noticeable difference between seeing
the entire window or having it cut off underneath the panel.)

Nils, what are the values for /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/type and
/sys/class/backlight/amdgpu_bl1/type on your system? If they're different,
PowerDevil currently would only pick the one(s) with the highest-ranked type.

Thanks Arjen. I've understood the overall idea of install-sessions.sh. What I
don't quite understand, though, is how KWin in Info Center identifies itself as
the one I built (5.91.90) and e.g. querying D-Bus for the process that provides
org.kde.kglobalaccel [1] shows that my self-built
$HOME/build/kde6/prefix/bin/kwin_wayland is in charge of that interface. The
old Plasma 5 kwin binary doesn't even show up in `ps aux`.

So the correct KWin seems to be running, but still lacks support for e.g.
zkde_screencast_unstable_v1 (and apparently also the screenshot extension for
Spectacle). Could there be something wrong with plugin paths perhaps? Or how
else would the right KWin leave out important Wayland protocols?
