You would have to download a Steam compatibility tool, such as:
https://github.com/GloriousEggroll/proton-ge-custom

As far as I know there isn't yet a build of Proton that's rebased on Wine 9.0.
I was using this:

https://github.com/rankynbass/unofficial-wine-xiv-git/releases/tag/v9.0

but not as a compatibility tool, but as the Wine binaries used along with the
rest of the compatibility tool, XIVLauncher-RB.

I used to run Steam in Wine before Proton was a thing. That might still be
possible. Good luck.

[kwin] [Bug 476536] New overview/grid animation does not feel as precise when using touchpad gestures

2024-01-19 Thread Prajna Sariputra
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=476536

The issue with the desktop switching animation in the overview was noted in the
merge request discussion
(https://invent.kde.org/plasma/kwin/-/merge_requests/4621#note_804254), Niccolò
said that the fix for that would be more complex.

So, I'd say it would be better to open a new bug report to focus on that
animation specifically, given the apparent difference between it and the rest
of the overview/grid effect.

I still feel that using touchpad swipes to switch desktops in overview mode
feels qualitatively different from the sliding desktop effect. This is a minor
point, but I feel that some more consistency is good.

In particular, with the sliding desktop effect, I feel that there is perfect
1:1 correspondence between the swipes and the locations of desktops on the
screen. But in the overview mode, I notice some sort of weird acceleration when
I am about to completely switch to a new desktop.

Also, the distance that I need to swipe feels slightly different (I am less
sure about this).

Would it be appropriate to reopen this report or should I submit a new one?

[krita] [Bug 480084] New: "Hard Light" blending mode is described incorrectly in the documentation

2024-01-19 Thread Kyrylo Simonov
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=480084

Bug ID: 480084
Summary: "Hard Light" blending mode is described incorrectly in
the documentation
Classification: Applications
   Product: krita
   Version: 5.2.2
  Platform: Other
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
 Component: Documentation
  Assignee: krita-bugs-n...@kde.org
  Reporter: x...@resolvent.net
  Target Milestone: ---

In the documentation, the "Hard Light" blending mode is described as follows:

Similar to Overlay. A combination of the Multiply and Screen blending modes,
switching between both at a middle-lightness.
Hard Light checks if the color on the upper layer has a lightness above 0.5.
Unlike Overlay, if the pixel is lighter than 0.5, it is blended like in
Multiply mode, if not the pixel is blended like in Screen mode.
Effectively, this decreases contrast.
(see
https://docs.krita.org/en/reference_manual/blending_modes/lighten.html#hard-light)

This description does not describe Hard Light. Indeed, Hard Light works exactly
like Overlay with upper and lower layers exchanged. Where the action of Overlay
depends on the value of the upper layer, the action of Hard Light depends on
the value of lower layer. Check the source code where Overlay is defined as:

inline T cfOverlay(T src, T dst) { return cfHardLight(dst, src); }

Note that a few other blending modes are described by referring to Hard Light
or Overlay and might also be incorrect.

[kompare] [Bug 480069] Add syntax highlighting

2024-01-19 Thread Kevin Kofler
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=480069

Sure, this would be nice. But mainly, this needs someone to implement it. There
are then also some concerns about the details, e.g., contrast issues if the
highlighting colors are too close to the background colors (e.g., many KatePart
syntax highlighting definitions use green and red text for some syntax), what
to do if the highlighting definition specifies a background color (which it can
do, e.g., several use red background for what they think are syntax errors),
etc. But those can be sorted out if and when someone actually has the time to
do the work. I do not.

  Platform: Other
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
 Component: general
  Assignee: konsole-de...@kde.org
  Reporter: noblech...@web.de
  Target Milestone: ---

SUMMARY
***
According to https://docs.kde.org/stable5/en/konsole/konsole/scripting.html, we
should be able to manage some aspects of konsole from the commandline. One
thing I've been trying to accomplish is profile switching. Say I have a profile
named Foobar.profile, I can't switch the current session profile using:

```
qdbus $KONSOLE_DBUS_SERVICE $KONSOLE_DBUS_SESSION
org.kde.konsole.Session.setProfile Foobar
```

The only thing the above does is to changes the profile for yakuake.
***

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Create a profile in konsole called Foobar
2. Type the command qdbus $KONSOLE_DBUS_SERVICE $KONSOLE_DBUS_SESSION
org.kde.konsole.Session.setProfile Foobar
3.

OBSERVED RESULT
No changes in the current konsole session

EXPECTED RESULT
Konsole session should switch to the new profile

[kdesu] [Bug 480082] New: kdesu -u option doesn't work

2024-01-19 Thread AT
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=480082

Bug ID: 480082
Summary: kdesu -u option doesn't work
Classification: Applications
   Product: kdesu
   Version: unspecified
  Platform: Other
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
 Component: general
  Assignee: kdesu-bugs-n...@kde.org
  Reporter: atmaho...@gmail.com
  Target Milestone: ---

A use-case of kdesu is to have a gui password dialog for programs that will run
in the background (e.g. launched from a desktop file, or a script you want to
start from krunner that has a section that needs sudo).

This works for root privileges, but does not for other users like `su - other
user -c command` would.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. This works to run a non-interactive command as root: kdesu -- bash -c "touch
/tmp/hi-from-su"
2. This is an interactive command as root that does not work: kdesu -- bash
3. This is a non interactive command as another user that partially works:
kdesu -u myotheruser -- bash -c "touch /tmp/hi-from-another-user"
4. An interactive command as another user with similar behavior: kdesu -u
myotheruser -- bash
5. An example of how it should work: su - myotheruser -c bash

OBSERVED RESULT
1. See /tmp/hi-from-su
2. kdesu command does not exit and there is no bash prompt
3. First see the expected password prompt asking for the user's password. After
entering the correct password:
- journalclt shows
su[64386]: (to myotheruser) myuser on pts/7
su[64386]: pam_unix(su:session): session opened for user myotheruser(uid=1001)
by myuser(uid=1000)
- The kdesu program shows another password prompt saying "Permission denied."
"Possibly incorrect password, please try again"
- Checking /tmp the new file does not exist yet
- Click the "Ignore" button in the new password prompt
- Checking /tmp now the new file exists, but was created by myuser and not
myotheruser as desired

4. Same as (3.) showing the session opened in journalctl. Then if we click
Ignore in the new password prompt, we drop into a bash shell. But the id
command shows this is not for the new user.

5. You get prompted for the password, and after entering it correctly you are
dropped into a bash shell for the new user.

EXPECTED RESULT
1. As expected
2. We should have a bash prompt as root
3. Since the password was correct, this should not prompt for a password again.
The command should not run as the user calling kdesu, but the requested user
4. Same as 3, and we should have a bash prompt as the new user

As a user, I would expect that "Create new text file" would just create an
empty file with the ".txt" extension.

Having a white space character included on the first line is a bit annoying. It
seems like KWrite automatically strips this character when you save the file,
but if you were to open the file in Vim it would not be stripped automatically.

At most, I think maybe a newline character would make sense so that you
automatically have the file ending in a newline character when you type
something in on the first line directly after file creation, but that's all.

Stacked layout test

Nope, just tested and I can't reproduce at all under Wayland. It seems like
this issue is scoped entirely under X11.

As a side-note since we're on the topic, I actually switch between Wayland and
X11 pretty frequently. Both have their drawbacks regarding performance vs.
desktop use. I tend to use X11 for when I need low latency in things like osu!
and Wayland for desktop use where that's not necessary and the compositor is a
lot smoother but has higher latency.

I unfortunately have a NVIDIA GPU in my computer, so neither Wayland or X11 has
ever been perfect for me due to their drivers, haha

Anyways, getting back on topic, did you mean a fully stacked layout like the
one in the attachment? I was also able to reproduce consistently under X11 with
that layout.

Classification: Applications
   Product: kate
   Version: 23.08.4
  Platform: Other
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
  Severity: minor
  Priority: NOR
 Component: sessions
  Assignee: kwrite-bugs-n...@kde.org
  Reporter: seegold1...@gmail.com
  Target Milestone: ---

SUMMARY
***
There is a setting in Kate "Automatically synchronize the terminal with the
current document when possible" which I have unchecked. Both when opening an
ordinary file and a session it seems to still change the path automatically
running a cd command by itself.
***

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Disable the setting "Automatically synchronize the terminal with the current
document when possible" under terminal settings.
2. Close Kate
3. Open a session or file with Kate
4. View the terminals current working directory

OBSERVED RESULT
The path is set to the path of the current file
EXPECTED RESULT
No automatic path change when opening a file.
For sessions it would make sense for it to be the same path as the last
session.

2024-01-19 Thread angel ord
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=480079

Bug ID: 480079
Summary: Palettize filter layer makes .KRA file unable to open
Classification: Applications
   Product: krita
Version: nightly build (please specify the git hash!)
  Platform: Compiled Sources
OS: Microsoft Windows
Status: REPORTED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
 Component: Filter Layers
  Assignee: krita-bugs-n...@kde.org
  Reporter: tocinos...@gmail.com
  Target Milestone: ---

SUMMARY
***
Adding a "Palettize" filter layer and saving the file makes krita freeze after
trying to open said file.
Some observations:

***

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Open Krita
2. add a "Palletize" Filter Layer
3. Save the file as .KRA file
4. Close Krita
5.Re-Open Krita
6.Try to open the .KRA file previously saved

OBSERVED RESULT

 - Krita keeps loading the file without ending, window name appears with (not
responding)
- this state goes for a long time (up to an hour, might be even more) until you
click on the window wich will make Krita freeze and make windows ask to force
it to close

EXPECTED RESULT
- The file is loaded without issues in a short amount of time

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Windows: Windows 10

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
- Krita only freezes and crashes AFTER the file is saved and said file is tried
to be open. There is no issues while working on the same session where the
filter was aplied and saved.
- It has been seen that it is only needed a single palettize filter layer to
make the file ubable to open again even with one paint layer or no other layer
at all, the canvas is as little as 100px in the testings made

[kwin] [Bug 480078] New: Artifacts and tearing while dragging windows only under 4k high refresh rate with UI global scale

2024-01-19 Thread Eduardo
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=480078

Bug ID: 480078
Summary: Artifacts and tearing while dragging windows only
under 4k high refresh rate with UI global scale
Classification: Plasma
   Product: kwin
   Version: 5.27.10
  Platform: Arch Linux
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
 Component: compositing

  Reporter: eduardo.c...@kdemail.net
  Target Milestone: ---

Created attachment 165059
  --> https://bugs.kde.org/attachment.cgi?id=165059=edit
Video showing the artifacts

I got a new monitor and I started experiencing visual artifacts while dragging
windows, specially if the window being dragged overlaps with the taskbar.

The taskbar displays some flickering, and the window displays some crazy
tearing/rectangular holes. Difficult to explain in words, please see attached
video for clarification.

For me this only happens on the 4k resolution (3840x2160) AND using refresh
rates either 144Hz or 160Hz, AND using 150% scaling factor (might happen on
other scaling factor).

If I put 4k 120Hz or below, the bug doesn't trigger, it needs at least 144Hz to
trigger. If I lower the resolution to anything below 4k, it doesn't happen. If
I use 100% scaling, it doesn't happen, even on 4k 160Hz. So you need these 3
conditions to trigger it: 4k, 144Hz+, and a scaling factor like 150%.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Own a 4k+high refresh rate monitor
2. Set the resolution to 4k, the refresh rate to at least 144Hz, and the global
scaling factor to 150%.
3. Drag some window overlapping the taskbar

OBSERVED RESULT
Crazy tearing/rectangular holes on the window being dragged, and flickering on
the taskbar.

EXPECTED RESULT
Smooth dragging with no artifacts

2024-01-19 Thread jesse
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=469431

I used this as a solution and it worked well to get the stock quotes.
https://discuss.kde.org/t/kmymoney-updating-stock-mutual-fund-issue/1228/19

I think this will continue to be an ongoing issue due to the fact that Yahoo
changes the site. Unless there is a site that provides data through a free API,
which I have not found one, it will be difficult to ensure that this never
breaks again.

Is there any open source projects that would offer this? I doubt it as all
programs that offer it as a service are not free-to-use. usually they come with
a price/cost, and some of that is most likely used to pay for the back end
services.
Would it be worth to ping the developers of other FOSS Financial software to
see how they are handling this?

Bug ID: 480074
Summary: Configure Error While Running Python3 Script
Classification: Applications
   Product: kdenlive

  Platform: Microsoft Windows

Python Error in Configure

SUMMARY
***
As the title suggests, The program returns a Python error referencing scripts
not found when opening configuration.
This error could be preventing the execution of other processes such as clip
transcoding. The installation is completely clean (first time on the machine) I
tried to reinstall again without success
***
STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Do a Clean install of KDEnlive 23.08.4 on a Windows 11 machine
2.Open Configure.
One or several error windows should be displayed immediately referring to
python errors.
3. Try adding a GIF or file that requires a Transcode (All transcodes will fail
because they call Nvidia dependencies even if you don't have one).

OBSERVED RESULT
The errors suggest that the program is trying to make calls to missing .py
dependencies in the installation folder
It could be related to this other bug that occurred in Arch Linux in 2023
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=465535
EXPECTED RESULT
The program should be able to install the "missing" .py and .dll from its
installation folder or reference whether it already has or is compatible with a
version of python currently installed

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Kdenlive: 23.08.4
Package Type: Unknown/Default

I think something like the 3rd and the 6th icons from the second image would
work. It might also be possible to replace the monitor with a wireframe planet
on the current icon, but I couldn't make a mock-up that would look good in
small sizes.

I only switched by Alt+Tab (quick, without hold this shortcut) and had not any
window as fullsceen, also video wasn't full screen mode.
Resources were not yet fully utilized. And IMHO "high system resource
utilization" should not lead to Plasma freezing.

Today I switched between KMail and Konsole and didn't observe such effect. The
same when I switched Firefox (this site opened) and konsole. Similar Konsole
and Dolphin. (memory utilization ~47%)

BTW. I'm not sure why widget of "task switcher" is always showing, even I press
shortcut very quickly. I think this slowdown task switching. I would expect to
see it only when I invoke shortcut and hold Alt key. Now pressing Tab I can
switch to other, visible as thumbnail, window.

I realize this is closed issue but is the final answer to this is wait till
plasma 6 releases and it'll be solved?
Switching to threaded when using proprietary nvidia drivers didn't fix this
issue for me. It was only when i enabled software rendering from this same gui
renderer thing that the issue stopped occuring. But this isn't ideal i guess
cause kde keeps nagging me that other issues may occur...

[kde] [Bug 480015] KDE Plasma (Wayland) Microstuttering in demanding DX12 games with VRR, perfectly smooth on X11

Ok, an update.
After doing a very minimal install of KDE Plasma on Arch., the stuttering on
Wayland is pretty much gone.
Runs as smooth as Gnome on Wayland with the VRR patches.

As for any other distro that comes with KDE preinstalled, that's a different
matter.
Switching to X11 on those completely gets rid of the stuttering while Wayland
still suffers.

I'll update this big report if I figure out what specific package/service is to
blame on Wayland.

Deliberately mis-spelled words in Spacebar (spell check not working)

Spell check does not work when using spacebar to compose texts. I see no
setting or button in the settings to enable it.

Oddly, when typing in information in the "settings" (proxy, mms information,
etc.), it "does" work.

I have gone into system setting in KDE and enabled "Automatic spell checking by
default" after searching online for a solution. This did not fix the problem I
am experiencing.

Two monitors of same vertical pixel count show different heights

SUMMARY
I just acquired a new LG 34BK95U-W monitor, which has a max resolution of 5120
x 2160 at 60Hz. It works just fine on a Macbook Pro, but when connected to my
KDE Neon box, it just won't work properly. I added some new modes via xrandr
because KDE thought it has a max resolution of 4K - 3840 x 2160, When I added
those modes, the monitor shows up as 5120 x 2160 capable, but it's impossible
to configure the 5K monitor beside another 4k monitor at 3840 x 21260, without
the displays overlapping. Also, the Neon Display Configuration module shows
two monitors with a vertical resolution of 2160 as different heights. See
attached screenshot. Because of the height difference the cursor jumps
vertically when moving from one monitor to another, and the cursor won't go
between the two monitors at all if in the upper zone where they don't touch.

I'm sure this is an underlying EDID problem, rather than with Plasma, but I
didn't expect Linux to be unable to handle new hardware these days.

[filelight] [Bug 480067] New: Add icicle or treemap visualization

2024-01-19 Thread bugzilla_noreply
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=480067

Bug ID: 480067
Summary: Add icicle or treemap visualization
Classification: Applications
   Product: filelight
   Version: unspecified
  Platform: Other
OS: All
Status: REPORTED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
 Component: general
  Assignee: unassigned-b...@kde.org
  Reporter: nilskemail+...@gmail.com
CC: martin.sandsm...@kde.org
  Target Milestone: ---

SUMMARY
Filelight currently only provides a sunburst view of the used space. However,
this visualization is susceptible to misrepresent the used space as the area
increases for files/directories further on the outside.
Icicle or treemap charts on the other hand correctly preserve area.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Create a directory with the following files (of equal size)
[ 80] .
├── [ 80] a
│   ├── [ 80] b
│   │   ├── [ 60] c
│   │   │   └── [ 1.0M] test
│   │   └── [ 1.0M] test
│   └── [ 1.0M] test
└── [ 1.0M] test
2. Start a filelight scan in this directory

OBSERVED RESULT
The further out instances of the test file have a larger area. When one looks
for large files/dirs to delete they intuitively go by area.

EXPECTED RESULT
The displayed area should be directly proportional to the file/dir size.

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Operating System: Fedora Linux 39
KDE Plasma Version: 5.27.10
KDE Frameworks Version: 5.113.0
Qt Version: 5.15.11

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
- Blog post from the creator of flamegraph.pl
(https://github.com/brendangregg/FlameGraph), a popular tool for plotting
profiling data, about the pros/cons of different chart types:
https://www.brendangregg.com/blog/2017-02-06/flamegraphs-vs-treemaps-vs-sunburst.html
- Similar tools like WinDirStat already use TreeMaps as those properly display
the area
- A disadvantage of TreeMaps is that clicking down would either directly jump
to the file, or would have to be limited to only go down one directory, there
is now "jump down to this directory" as there is currently. Icicle graphs would
not have this problem.
- For profiling, icicle graphs (or their upside-down equivalent, flame graphs)
are already the prime chart type due to proper area representation which is
similarly important when profiling as it is for file system cleanup/analysis.

[krita] [Bug 480064] New: Shift-drag to change brush size stops at the desktop border, even though the cursor does not actually move there

2024-01-19 Thread bugzilla_noreply
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=480064

Bug ID: 480064
Summary: Shift-drag to change brush size stops at the desktop
border, even though the cursor does not actually move
there
Classification: Applications
   Product: krita
   Version: 5.2.2
  Platform: Microsoft Windows
OS: Microsoft Windows
Status: REPORTED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
 Component: Usability
  Assignee: krita-bugs-n...@kde.org
  Reporter: markred...@gmail.com
  Target Milestone: ---

SUMMARY

Shift-dragging will change the brush size. This happens in-place; while the
operation is ongoing, the mouse cursor does not move, it only changes in size.
However, it appears that below the hood, the cursor is in fact moving, and
stopping at the desktop border! The effect is that when resizing a brush,
depending on where the action is performed, part of the value range is
inaccessible.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Create a new document
2. Set the brush size to 1000.00 px
3. Move the canvas so that it is close to the left desktop border
4. Shift-Drag left from close to the left border in order to reduce the brush
size

OBSERVED RESULT

The brush gets a little smaller, but quickly stops resizing, even if you
continue to drag left.

EXPECTED RESULT

The brush should continue to get smaller as you are dragging, until it reaches
its minimum size.

Allow disabling DDC brightness via env variable

Interacting with ddcutils has shown to be troublesome on occasion, so it
might be interesting to disable it, if only for debugging

When starting powerdevil with POWERDEVIL_NO_DDCUTIL=1 it will skip
initializing/using ddcutil
