Classification: KDE Neon

The current package for GCompris is built with Qt5 (at the time of writing).
GCompris can be built with Qt6, and upstream recently made it the default build
stack for Android builds and CI. It would be nice to switch the neon package
build to Qt6 too.

[Merkuro] [Bug 486721] New: Cannot import calendar from ICS file

2024-05-07 Thread Ghislain Vaillant

Bug ID: 486721
   Summary: Cannot import calendar from ICS file
Classification: Applications
   Product: Merkuro
   Version: 24.02.2
  Platform: Neon
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
 Component: general
  Assignee: claudio.cam...@kde.org

  Target Milestone: ---

SUMMARY

Importing an agenda from an ICS file does not seem to work.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. File -> Import
2. Select an ICS file (mine was under my downloads folder)
3. Check the list of calendars on the left hand side

OBSERVED RESULT

The agenda is not visible in the list. No user-facing error message as to why
it was successfully imported.
When launching the app with Konsole, the log hows:

```
kf.kio.filewidgets.kfilefiltercombo: Could not find file filter
qrc:/ImportHandler.qml:93: ReferenceError: fileUrl is not defined
```

EXPECTED RESULT

The agenda should be successfully imported, or a useful error message should be
displayed if not.

  Platform: Neon
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
  Severity: minor
  Priority: NOR
 Component: general
  Assignee: claudio.cam...@kde.org
  Reporter: ghisv...@gmail.com
CC: c...@carlschwan.eu
  Target Milestone: ---

SUMMARY
The Merkuro Mail application is difficult to launch, since it does not appear
in the menu.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Install Merkuro Mail from Discover
2. Open the menu and search for Merkuro

OBSERVED RESULT
The Merkuro calendar and contacts applications are listed in the search
results, but not the mail one.

EXPECTED RESULT
The Merkuro mail application should appear in the search results alongside the
calendar and contacts ones.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
The corresponding desktop file for the Merkuro mail app features a
`NoDisplay=true` field, which explains why it is hidden from the search
results. It looks like it is a deliberate
[move](https://invent.kde.org/pim/merkuro/-/commit/77c1dd6d18019498c1293304cb9eb3bfc3e4dd7d)
upstream, but I could not find the rationales for it.

I fail to understand what's the point of deliberately hiding an app like this.
It is properly advertised as beta quality in the description. Hiding it makes
collecting valuable user's feedback more difficult. I wish the upstream commit
were more explicit about this decision.

[neon] [Bug 470794] Packaged version of PlasmaTube depends on outdated and broken version of yt-dlp

2024-04-01 Thread Ghislain Vaillant

--- Comment #3 from Ghislain Vaillant  ---
(In reply to Jonathan Riddell from comment #2)
> There's a general KDE issue here too, why does it not specify the version of
> yt-dlp needed at build time etc..

I believe the issue is that yt-dlp just keeps playing catch-up with whatever
breaking changes in the Youtube API, so you should be expecting to always be
using its latest version at any point in the future. That's very much
incompatible with the standard way of packaging in Debian or Ubuntu, whereby
the underlying package version is frozen.

As an alternative, I wonder whether the KDE neon user repository could provide
its own updates to the yt-dlp package, instead of relying on the Ubuntu one?

KDE neon current provides Haruna 0.12.x in the user repository, which relies on
Qt5 and KF5.

It would be desirable to update the packaging to target releases from version
1.0 onward,
to benefit from the port of the software to Qt6 and KF6.

Same problem with merkuro:

```
$ sudo apt install merkuro
$ merkuro-mail
QQmlApplicationEngin failed to load component
.../libmerkuro_mail_plugin.so : (libZXing.so.3: cannot open shared object: No
such file or directory)
```

Can be fixed by installing the `libzxing3` package.

Confirmed on KDE Neon 6.0. Fails with same error with the native package, runs
fine with Flatpak.

A suggestion from a thread in KDE Discuss was to install yt-dlp under
`$HOME/.local/bin`, which should take precedence over the packaged version
thanks to the `$PATH` override. It is still not ideal from a user's
perspective.

It begs the question whether it makes sense to provide an up-to-date plasmatube
package in Neon without regular updates to yt-dlp too.

This. I have got three applications using PyQt5, either directly or via a shim
module like QtPy, and a KDE runtime with PyQy5 already included would
definitely help.
