[plasmashell] [Bug 486175] New: Slideshow wallpaper leak memory

2024-04-26 Thread Ilya Bizyaev
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=486175

Bug ID: 486175
   Summary: Slideshow wallpaper leak memory
Classification: Plasma
   Product: plasmashell
   Version: 6.0.4
  Platform: Compiled Sources
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
 Component: Image Wallpaper
  Assignee: plasma-b...@kde.org
  Reporter: bizy...@zoho.com
CC: notm...@gmail.com, qydwhotm...@gmail.com
  Target Milestone: 1.0

SUMMARY
If you configure your desktop to use a slideshow wallpaper with a large image
folder as its source, plasmashell will continue growing to gigabytes of RAM.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Right-click the desktop > Desktop and wallpaper.
2. Set the wallpaper type to Slideshow, add a single large image directory as
source.
3. Set the change interval to something low, like 1-2 seconds, to speed things
up. It's not a requirement, though: with a longer update interval, it will
still happen, just later.

OBSERVED RESULT
plasmashell's memory usage will quickly grow to gigabytes. Change the wallpaper
type to just Image to stop it, before it's too late!

EXPECTED RESULT
plasmashell's memory usage stays around the same level over time.

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Operating System: openSUSE Tumbleweed 20240418

[kscreenlocker] [Bug 485894] New: Animated wallpapers don't play on the lockscreen

2024-04-21 Thread Ilya Bizyaev
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=485894

Bug ID: 485894
Summary: Animated wallpapers don't play on the lockscreen
Classification: Plasma
   Product: kscreenlocker
   Version: 6.0.4
  Platform: Compiled Sources
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
 Component: general
  Assignee: plasma-b...@kde.org
  Reporter: bizy...@zoho.com
  Target Milestone: ---

SUMMARY
When using the same GIF as my wallpaper for both the desktop and the
lockscreen, the animation will play on the desktop, but not on the lockscreen.
The specific file doesn't seem to matter, you can test with this one:
https://giphy.com/gifs/Windows-windows-clippy-microsoft-Ix6GpACnOfQ37CBAzq

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Set an animated GIF image (or a folder with animated GIF images) as your
lockscreen wallpaper.
2. Lock the screen (e.g. with Meta+L).

OBSERVED RESULT
The GIF does not play. The lockscreen is otherwise responsive, and images
change when using a slideshow.

EXPECTED RESULT
Animated GIFs play on the lockscreen just like they do on the desktop.

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Operating System: openSUSE Tumbleweed 20240418
KDE Plasma Version: 6.0.80
KDE Frameworks Version: 6.2.0
Qt Version: 6.7.0
Kernel Version: 6.8.6-1-default (64-bit)
Graphics Platform: Wayland

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
On two random occasions in months, I've had GIFs play on the lockscreen! I
don't know how to reproduce this success though :)

[krunner] [Bug 485881] New: KRunner does not respect runner priority settings

2024-04-21 Thread Ilya Bizyaev
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=485881

Bug ID: 485881
Summary: KRunner does not respect runner priority settings
Classification: Plasma
   Product: krunner
   Version: master
  Platform: Compiled Sources
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
 Component: general
  Assignee: plasma-b...@kde.org
  Reporter: bizy...@zoho.com
CC: alexander.loh...@gmx.de, natalie_clar...@yahoo.de
  Target Milestone: ---

SUMMARY
I have KRunner configured with the following modules as favorites, in this
order: “KWin”, “Applications”, “Recent files”, “File Search”.
But when I search for “chrome”, it shows all the “Folders”, then “Text
documents”, then “Documents”, then “Images”, then “Audio”, then “Files”, then
“Archives”, and only then Google Chrome in “Applications”.
Also, when I search for “kwin”, “Launch KWin debug console” is similarly buried
under all the file results.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Configure KRunner as specified above.
2. Do a search for “chrome” or “kwin”.

OBSERVED RESULT
I have to scroll through multiple pages of results before I get to what I need
most often.

EXPECTED RESULT
I can just press Enter to launch what I need.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Have some files in the trash bin, make sure it is visible on the desktop.
2. Empty the trash through the desktop icon's context menu or Dolphin's Places

I've tried doing the following commands once in the TTY:
$ loginctl unlock-session 3
$ systemctl --user restart plasma-kwin_wayland.service

This returns me to TTY3 where KWin should be, but the screen is still black.
After a few seconds, I get kicked out to SDDM. From SDDM, I am unable to start
a new Plasma Wayland session, as I always get kicked back out after a few
seconds of black screen.

SDDM itself is displayed normally, and rebooting from SDDM works.

SUMMARY

After a period of inactivity on the lock screen, the monitor is automatically
turned off. If I shake the mouse to wake it up again as soon as it happens (or
right after that), the monitor's backlight is re-enabled, but there is no image
— just a black rectangle.

So far, I have not found a way to continue using my computer when this happens.
I am able to enter a TTY and issue "systemctl reboot".

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. System Settings > Energy Saving > When locked, turn off screen: 200 sec
2. System Settings > Screen Locking > Lock screen automatically: after 1 minute
3. Wait :)
4. As the screen is turned off, shake the mouse.

OBSERVED RESULT
The screen is re-enabled, but the signal is just darkness.

EXPECTED RESULT
I can see the lockscreen.

I think I no longer have this problem with kdesrc-built Plasma. With stable
packages built by openSUSE, Plasma sometimes fails to recover at all after
suspend, but that's a different issue.

2024-03-06 Thread Ilya Bizyaev
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=482593

Bug ID: 482593
Summary: Adding the 2nd keyboard layout does not make the
system tray layout indicator appear until re-login
Classification: Plasma
   Product: plasmashell
   Version: 6.0.1
  Platform: Arch Linux
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
 Component: Keyboard Layout
  Assignee: plasma-b...@kde.org
  Reporter: bizy...@zoho.com
CC: butir...@gmail.com
  Target Milestone: 1.0

SUMMARY
I was just testing Plasma 6 on Arch Linux in a virtual machine:
* Downloaded an ISO
* Used the `archinstall` script with the default setting of just the English
keyboard layout
* Installed plasma-meta, konsole, dolphin, spectacle, enabled sddm, logged into
the Plasma 6 Wayland session
* Used System Settings to configure the keyboard layouts: added "English (US)"
and "Russian".

OBSERVED RESULT
No system tray indicator until I logged out and back in.

EXPECTED RESULT
The system tray indicator with the configured layouts appears as soon as I
apply the new keyboard layout settings.

SUMMARY

When my computer enters sleep automatically (based on the default power
management settings), on wake up, the monitor gets no signal. I have to use the
hardware button to power it off and on again — then the image is back.

This does not happen when invoking sleep manually from the application launcher
or the lockscreen.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Wait for Plasma (PowerDevil?) to put my computer to sleep (suspend to RAM)
based on the timer.
2. After a few minutes, press the hardware power button or move the mouse to
wake it up.

OBSERVED RESULT
The monitor gets no signal.

EXPECTED RESULT
The monitor shows my lockscreen.

workaround for me (thanks, Victor!)

SUMMARY
I wanted to test the new “ICC color profile” option in Display Configuration,
so I've downloaded an .icm file for my monitor and tried to apply it in System
Settings. For some reason, that makes my screen much darker at the same
brightness levels, which I suspect could be a problem.

I don't have any additional “Steps to reproduce”, but the problem is likely
hardware-specific.

[neon] [Bug 480645] New: XDG user dirs not created after install

2024-01-31 Thread Ilya Bizyaev
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=480645

Bug ID: 480645
Summary: XDG user dirs not created after install
Classification: KDE Neon
   Product: neon
   Version: unspecified
  Platform: Other
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
 Component: general
  Assignee: neon-b...@kde.org
  Reporter: bizy...@zoho.com
CC: j...@jriddell.org, neon-b...@kde.org, sit...@kde.org
  Target Milestone: ---

SUMMARY
When I log into a freshly installed Neon on a VM, the user's Home directory
doesn't contain the usual places (Pictures, Videos, Downloads etc.).

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Install KDE Neon (preferably in a language other than English).
2. Log into the user session.
3. Open Dolphin.

OBSERVED RESULT
The home directory is almost empty, and so is the Places panel in Dolphin's
sidebar.

EXPECTED RESULT
Both the home directory and the Places panel contain the full set of default
folders for the current locale, same as configured in System Settings.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
I usually use openSUSE, where I've never had this problem; but sometimes I rely
on Neon to make screenshots of pre-release Plasma versions. I also see such
screenshots with missing folders on our social media, e.g.
https://twitter.com/kdecommunity/status/1729959817576386680. It would be nice
if screenshots of Dolphin taken on Neon were representative of how Dolphin is
expected to look.

[Breeze] [Bug 477299] Multi-line menu text for menu items displayed incorrectly

Git commit a5f463e236639370ba2770b7bc0e28dbe777b0eb by Ilya Bizyaev, on behalf
of Ilya Bizyaev.
Committed on 30/01/2024 at 11:44.
Pushed by ilyabizyaev into branch 'Plasma/6.0'.

Fix display of multiline menu items

Currently, multiline text in menu items is displayed incorrectly: the
bounding rectangle is calculated ignoring newlines, while the newline is
displayed in the resulting menu, and the text is cropped.

This commit makes it so the newline is considered in the calculation as
well. To do so, we get text metrics ourselves instead of delegating it
to the ancient QMenu code that forces `Qt::TextSingleLine`.

Note that this approach is not new:
* In Breeze, the code right below for QStyleOptionMenuItem::Separator
  also gets text metrics.
* In Qt, the Fusion style also requests font metrics:

https://invent.kde.org/qt/qt/qtbase/-/blob/dev/src/widgets/styles/qfusionstyle.cpp#L3084-3088

Note that this commit does not imply that it is a good idea to use
multiline menu item text in KDE apps from now on; it merely fixes an
existing rendering defect that caused multiline actions to look wrong in
StatusNotifierItems.

I agree that the visual scope is what causes the confusion, and I support the
linked proposal, although the “Defaults” button needs to be given a more
explicit name to clarify the scope if it is moved into the hamburger menu (e.g.
“Reset the Current Page to Defaults”). I'll leave a comment.

In System Settings, the “Defaults” button only resets values on the current
page, not all the pages. System Settings is the most often used configuration
UI in all of KDE software, so I think it should be the reference for other
places.

SUMMARY
Unlike Plasma 5 and previous pre-releases of Plasma 6, the background of bars
in System Monitor's widget is now white or light-gray, as opposed to dark-gray.
I'm assuming it's not an intentional change.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Add a System Monitor widget to the panel.
2. Configure it with “Horizontal Bars”.

OBSERVED RESULT
See the attached screenshot.

EXPECTED RESULT
The bars are of a less striking color.

This somehow got fixed with
https://invent.kde.org/plasma/kwin/-/merge_requests/5037 for me. My guess is
that NVIDIA supports `DRM_FORMAT_RGBA` while other GPUs don't, which is the
format KWin was trying to set on the window captures whenever supported, but it
was incorrectly flipped somewhere along the way.

I think something like the 3rd and the 6th icons from the second image would
work. It might also be possible to replace the monitor with a wireframe planet
on the current icon, but I couldn't make a mock-up that would look good in
small sizes.

SUMMARY
When I look at the system tray and see the icon that looks a lot like a
monitor, I think that it has something to do with monitors. For example, when I
want to configure screen brightness, the icon with a screen on it wins my
attention over “crescent with a light bulb”, and I click it instead. At such a
small size, it's hard to tell that the thing to the left of the screen
represents an Ethernet cable.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Log in to Plasma
2. Establish a wired connection
3. Wait for the “network-wireless” icon to appear on the plasma-nm indicator

OBSERVED RESULT
It's a cyborg screen

EXPECTED RESULT
It's a cable, maybe with a planet next to it (aka the web)
