I got the feeling though that the high CPU was the system trying to find pages to swap, etc e.g dealing with the memory "leak" in plasmashell. My Linux debugging skills does not allow me to verify this suspicion. After reading this thread as well as other discussions (Kubuntuforums) I have now removed all but the most essential plasmoids.
