[plasmashell] [Bug 454345] Desktop Icons sometimes get scrambled on plasmashell startup

2023-03-20 Thread Pasha

The black, unresponsive screen with just mouse cursor on it is already 3-4
years old and it's the very reason, besides dancing icons, which made me quit
KDE. Unfortunately, on the contrary of what you report, results were pretty
much unpredictable: you shut down you machine and at the next reboot... BOOM!

At first, the only way out was backupping .kde folder and restoring it - just
imagine the pain in the ass of backupping your DE every time you switch off
your machine...

Eventually, the bug got so BIG that even restoring the old .kde folder still
didn't sort a way out of the black screen; the problem (and pain) was that I
couldn't exactly find what the heck was causing it it always came after
initial (long) configurations and a small period of use (like one or two
weeks). "Nice" to know this happened on Debian and some other distro I tried. I
got so pissed off with this buttfuck that you know how the story went.

Too bad to know that somebody else is getting the same bad black screen :(

Mouse behavior is the same as in the bug, that you've provided. And it was the
same for me prior to 5.27 update. 5.27 brought the bug that you can see in the
youtube video in the bottom of my bug report (should I move it to the
attachments?) and it is not displayed in the 455526 report.

So now fun has been tranfserred to the other "bug channel"... too bad you were
obliged to open it, this is ruining the astounding 7 years record of this one
by some maquillage... this is pretty unfair! And there is some nerd claiming
that the bug has been "squashed" (this "CLOSED FIXED" status belongs more to a
Mr. Bean show rather than serious IT), while it's still there... 1 cause, 2
causes, n causes... the bug is still there, granny still complains about her
dancing icons... so policy is: make it look like a bug squashing community, but
"run it like politics" i.e. show some fake progress and relax, it's not your
problem! (...and, after all, it's a pretty recent bug, just 2 weeks old, isn't
it?)

P.S.: gnome 42 works great, can also default file manager to nemo

the problem lies in the date format. it should be two digits even when one

like this: 14/02/21 not: 14/2/21.
if the format is fixed, the alignment will get fixed automatically.

i did some research and i think this it is not Dolphin's fault. it about locale

Yes, after 5 YEARS of kissing some phantom dev's ass, offering availability to
help nothing has happened. Wrong strategy.

I picked up NUMBER SIX: use ubuntu with Gnome 3. I REFUSE to go back to KDE
(which always used to be my fave DE) UNTIL this RIDICULOUS bug gets fixed. I
don't play games, I don't switch resolution and the bug was still there till I
installed ubuntu. Now, finally, it's gone. Finally effective debugging.

You have been already told that even the infamous win 95 didn't have such
annoying bug and you devs spend time beating yourself up with arcane
mumbo-jumbo while the FRONT LINE OF YOUR PRODUCT IS FLAWED, dancing icons on
the desktop are one of the first things every "lucky" one notices.

You really must be out of this world guys, wasting so many hours of your life
in order to make the perfect software and getting turned down by the very first
grandma using KDE and asking "why the hell don't these icons stay where I put
them?".

Come back down to Earth, realize that a product that does annoy the user ain't
really gonna "konquer" the world.

Sincerily yours

there must be a place where KDE got the flag from.
KDE can not have done this in my opinion by its self.
we need to find the place KDE got the flag's info from.

Kcalc seems fine. (I cant do full screen on Kcalc), but other than this,
everything looks okay on Kcalc.

Hello friends, just dropping a thought: if devs cannot easily reproduce this
bug and therefore do not get interested in squashing it, one of us with an
updated and terribly scrambling desktop could make up an OVA file out of his
system in order for the devs to be able to consistently reproduce the bug!

...of course this would be useful only if a willing dev could be elicited...

Hello Nick,

in just some months this bug will "celebrate" its 5th "anniversary" and it's
still around like dogshit on pavements: "unacceptable" has already become an
understatement.

After fighting over it in 2018 and uselessly offering my cooperation, I sadly
catched there is not much interest in fixing it, so I switched to gnome3. But I
am still reading this thread, in order to know if I will ever be able to use
KDE again, it's always been my favourite.

I can give you a hint: not all distros react the same way, I recently had some
luck with debian sid and SolydK (pretty nice job distro, btw), so, if you're
stubborn enough, your mileage might vary and you could find the sweet spot.

This said, good luck, and let us know!

only some don't get repositioned, while all the rest do. Looks like this is the

Hello everybody, coming from three years long 360212 which has just been marked
duplicate of this bug two days ago.

Ready to offer cooperation in experimenting what is needed to forward useful
information to devs. My machine is debian sid running KDE (siduction.org), and
I hope to someday get desktop icons that don't get messed up at almost any
reboot.

Thanks

[plasmashell] [Bug 360212] Icon positions in folder view of the desktop are often scrambled after reboot or logout

2018-10-02 Thread Pasha
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=360212

Christoph, let's be honest: it's almost three years that we claim that there is
a bug and that we offer our availability in terms of time and effort to correct
it, and three years that the former assignee did whatever on this planet but
taking care of the issue, and just responding with stuff like "hey, you are
using my software! how dare you!".

We obviously need some guidance, as you can read through the history, many
people tried to do something but without a successful result. Here the issue is
not random, I get it almost at every reboot. And I bet that with many others it
is the same.

Personally I hope that moving to bug 354802 will sort out better results. But,
please, don't whine if we call someone on his rotten behaviour. And, btw, as
you can see, maybe this moved things a bit forward.

Dear Friends, please accept the reality: this bug will NEVER be fixed!
It is almost 3 years that it has been signalled and the assignee has done half
of nothing, except for badly reacting to all the people who asked for some
commitment.

Unless it will be assigned to someone else, do not expect any solution for the
next 10+ years. So either change DE or live with it (I got sadly used to a
fucked up desktop).

OK, I assume you have good will.

I think that you're right about being under pressure, and nobody questions the
importance of your work, neither the fact that you're understaffed in
accomplishing certain tasks.

Nevertheless, this bug has been floating kinda one year and a half, and with
all the people who have taken their time writing here, plus those who left KDE5
just because "it messes icons up" without even knowing there was this place to
signal it properly, I think you will agree they need to know if the issue will
be addressed or not.

Some recent insights by people writing here, who also spent their valuable time
to help you making better and better software, may have paved the way about
where to look in order to squash this annoying bug quickly.

As you see, the community is on your side, so it's just matter to tell us what
we can do in order to help you to fix things and make them better.

Hello everybody,

I upgraded from 5.8 to 5.10 yesterday, but got no improvement.
I already asked which debug info should I provide, but there was no
hint/answer.
Here classic Ctrl-Alt-Backspace does not work, but also logoff-logon doesn't.
I can also confirm that, since KDE2 to KDE4 I never encountered such a problem.
Also, when you open your workspace and those icons you carefully ordered last
time are all messed up, it is not a "beautiful feeling".

My sensation is that our friend Eike has no real interest in squashing this
annoying bug. Can you confirm this Eike, or are you finally willing to
cooperate with us to show the opposite?
Thanks

Hello, I also noticed that logouts partially mitigate the problem but its
occourring remains unpredictable.

About filenames for icons/files (I run on "folders view" setting) I carefully
avoid non ASCII characters as a best practice since ages.

Btw, how can this annoying bug still bear the "UNCONFIRMED" status is a
mystery...
