[neon] [Bug 386686] .xsession-errors file grows until it completely fills the HDD while running Kodi

It happened again yesterday on a fresh install of Neon. Not sure if it is only
with Kodi because there are other bug reports about this same problem from
other users running different apps. I posted this problem on the KDE Facebook
page in November and the solution was to change the compositor from the default
(OpenGL 2.0) to xrender.

[neon] [Bug 386686] New: .xsession-errors file grows until it completely fills the HDD while running Kodi

2017-11-09 Thread jackrooster
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=386686

Bug ID: 386686
Summary: .xsession-errors file grows until it completely fills
the HDD while running Kodi
   Product: neon
   Version: unspecified
  Platform: Neon Packages
OS: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
  Severity: crash
  Priority: NOR
 Component: general
  Assignee: neon-b...@kde.org
  Reporter: jacquerooster...@gmail.com
CC: j...@jriddell.org, neon-b...@kde.org, sit...@kde.org
  Target Milestone: ---

I left my computer alone for a few hours. When I left, there was ~100GB of free
space in the /Home directory on my laptop. When I came back there was zero free
space. I moved a couple of large files to an external drive. Dolphin showed
there was 2.5 GB free space, so I decided to move a few more files to the
external drive. As I was moving them, Dolphin was showing less and less free
space available! In less than 5 minutes, I watched it go from 2.5GB free, down
to ~850MB. After rebooting the laptop, it showed 100GB of free space once
again. This happened repeatedly. Eventually, I discovered a file called
".xsessions-errors" was the culprit and that this only happened when running
Kodi.

Okay. I just filed a bug report with the Ubuntu group. I use LibreOffice daily
for writing books, creating graphics, advertisments, business cards, lesson
plans, etc... and have many versions of these files going back to 2009 that I
reuse and update almost everyday. The only way of quickly and easily finding
what I need is with the thumbnails. I've been a KDE user for over six years and
absolutely love Neon, but can't use it because of this issue. Thanks again for
your time.

I have a script (more like a simple text file) that I use to install my
favorite apps after a new installation and kde-thumbnailer-openoffice is
included. I googled it a few weeks ago when I first noticed the problem. It
only works with KDE 3 and 4.x. There's something new in Plasma 5 that causes it
not to work.

The search only responded with "WARNING: apt does not have a stable CLI
interface. Use with caution in scripts." PS: I filed a bug report under Neon.

The summary pretty much says it all. I've tested this in Neon, Maui Linux and
Mint KDE 18.2 and all have this problem. I filed a bug report under Dolphin and
was told there is a file called "kde-odf-thumbnail" that is supposed to fix it
but it does not appear in Synaptic.

I've tested this in Neon, Maui Linux and Mint KDE 18.2 and all have the same
problem. kde-odf-thumbnail doesn't appear Synaptic.

"I would recommend filing a bug against Neon requesting that kde-odf-thumbnail
be installed by default, or made a hard dependency of libreoffice." I thought I
was doing that here. Sorry, I'm new to filing bug reports.

Is there anyway I can install it?

Thanks for your time.

Bug 381000 refers to high CPU usage. That is not the problem I am having. CPU
usage is normal on my computer. The problem is the swap space filling up and
crashing my system when the wallpaper is set to slideshow.

I was getting messages that my drive was full so I opened Dolphin and started
deleting files. Even after emptying the trash, Dolphin still reported that the
drive was full. I rebooted the computer. Now I can't log in. When I type my
password, the system just freezes. Tried multiple times. Same result.

I've been having a problem with the swap filling up, bringing the system to a
halt Neon 5.10.5. I finally tracked it down to setting the desktop wallpaper to
slideshow. I have tested this on two different laptops with the exact same
results.
