[kdenlive] [Bug 444260] New: kdenlive version management
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=444260 Bug ID: 444260 Summary: kdenlive version management Product: kdenlive Version: unspecified Platform: Appimage OS: Linux Status: REPORTED Severity: wishlist Priority: NOR Component: User Interface Assignee: j...@kdenlive.org Reporter: j...@cspv.hu Target Milestone: --- hi, kdenlive already is very helpful and cautious about kdenlive versions... so, when opening a project with a version newer than what it was last edited with, a bakcup file is being created... BUT instead of being careful, it could elevate to even smart :) I mean, in project settings the kdenlive version could be set... like "18.1"... so, when the project is being opened in a newer version, not ooly the fact that it is newer could be acknowledged... after "trying" to edit the project in the newer version, the user could (when saving it, and also when closing it) be asked to choose whether to MIGRATE the project to a new kdenlive version... or stick to the the original version... // what I do is, I have a "my_apps" folder in my home dir... in which I keep the app images.. KDENLIVE has a folder in it... and I keep several versions there... and in the project directory I have a 00_version_notes.txt in which I record the version, for example, 18.12.1 and I know that this is immensely GREAT advantage of a FREE, community developed application... cause we can have several versions... and our projects could be safely accessed even years later.. in contrast to this, for example, all my projects that I once had using "premiere pro" I purged.. cause I don't don't have that application anymore.. and I don't want to have it, either :) nor do I want to have a windows installation anywhere on my SSDs... for some time, I kept my Sony Vegas Pro projects... also kept a windows installation for that purpose... and never ever updated the vegas pro... but now I don't have any of that shit :) :) IN ANY CASE: when it's your personal / art project... you'll want to access it even years later... for sure... and kdenlive makes this perfectly possible... already... my above suggestion is just the improved version of what already exists... - - - thank you for developing kdenlive, the best PRO video editor - - - -- You are receiving this mail because: You are watching all bug changes.

BUT when tho clips are identical in length, one being typically above the other... the help that COPY/PASTING Transformations would mean would be IMMENSE cause in that case an ACCURATE copy-paste could be implemented :) fade-ins, fade-outs and dissolves are the 0s and 1s of editing :) any type of logical simplicity can be so (!!) LIBERATING :) - - - PS: - - - we can see that a HUGE re-thinking and re-building has been done (!!!), including the retirement of the Affine thing... and the introduction of the universal "compositions and transformations" concept... I mean, it is obvious that you are putting a great deal of thinking in it :) - - - thank you for developing kdenlive!! - - - PS: I just realized that it ALREADY works !! it is only NOT perfect yet !!! - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - TL;DR --- down to here - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - so, now that I realized that it works... here is how it could work even better... (I didn't delete what I wrote because like this I can say one more "THANK YOU !!!" :) ) STEPS TO REPRODUCE 1. create a transformation effect (old Affine) and throw it on a clip... 2. set the key frames and the Opacity values, for example... 3. right click and click "COPY" 4/A. select another clip and try to paste it from right click menu 4/B. try to paste it by hitting CTRL+V OBSERVED RESULT A. from right click there is NO option to paste the transformation (old Affine) on the clip... B. if you hit CTRL+V... it will be magically pasted somewhere near the clip :) (in version 18.12.b closer... in 19.4 farther :) ) EXPECTED RESULT it should be there available in the context menu "paste transformation"... also, either by hitting CTRL+V or clicking "paste transformation" should paste it ON the selected clip... unless it is impossoble SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS Windows: macOS: Linux/KDE Plasma: (available in About System) KDE Plasma Version: KDE Frameworks Version: Qt Version: ADDITIONAL INFORMATION -- You are receiving this mail because: You are watching all bug changes.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE 1. create a 1 min long project, and start rendering it 2. read the estimated rendering time 3. check the actual duration after it's done OBSERVED RESULT (beware: a slow machine!! :)) with one color clip, 1 min, rendering as mp4 (23/160, medium speed, 1 thread) estimation: 45 sec, actual time 1:10 (45:75 -- 150% of the estimated time) the same 1 min clip with 30 a second long title clip estimated time: 3:20, actual time: 2:24 (200:144 --> 75% of the estimated time) EXPECTED RESULT in both cases better estimates could be made :) (Note: in both cases I could predict that the actual duration would be different, including telling that it would be longer and shorter, respectively) - - - - - - - SUGGESTION: #1 or there could be a function "test rendering speed"... with a "built in", pre-defined series of rendering tasks... or KDENLIVE could be able to learn the machines IRL capabilities while rendering :) #2/A a quick test rendering could be made with any project... of variable time... like "quick" or "longer", during which some parts of the project would be rendered, like 30 seconds of them, which could, in the end make an intelligent guessing possible... #2/B as an alternative to 2/A, a project survey could be made... identifying 3 different types of sections, "parts"... like: "type A task parts" -- plain video, no effect or overlay" 45% of the whole... "type B" -- some not so resource consuming video effects", "type C" -- some downright resource-demanding effects", transitions as I imagine, even distinguishing just 3 types could make estimation much more accurate... cause before rendering a survey could be made as to how much of the 3 types will have to be rendered... in percentage... like 6 minutes (A:45%, B: 25%, C:30%) NOTE: when you're working on a a project, of COURSE, you'll learn it quickly how long it will take to render one minute of it or the whole, so it's not such a great deal if the estimation is not so accurate... also, knowing that it is not-so-accurate helps a lot :) so, after all, I'm not so sure if it should be dealt with at all... --- thank you for developing KDENLIVE! --- SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS Windows: MacOS: Linux/KDE Plasma: (available in About System) KDE Plasma Version: KDE Frameworks Version: Qt Version: ADDITIONAL INFORMATION -- You are receiving this mail because: You are watching all bug changes.

I would say, it is two different "layers" of the editing, two different aspects… so, it would be great (if not super great) if effects could be turned off temporarily during previews… STEPS TO REPRODUCE 1. play a zone with lots of effects on each clip on a slow machine 2. 3. OBSERVED RESULT it is jerky, some short clips might be skipped altogether EXPECTED RESULT it could be played "without ALL effects" or "without costly effects", or without "all audio" effects or "without all video" effects… there could be a “effects during preview” dropdown option menu or something, up in the main toolbar, next to the render button… for example… - - - - - * EXPLANATION: → as you know, in some cases, people work on slower computers… however, thanks to KDENLIVE's portability, it is also possible that now you work on your slower machine, now you're back on your fast machine… → in many cases, without the effects a slow computer can handle yielding a pretty decent preview… → to turn off effects one by one is not an option, for more than one reason (one of these: not all effects are turned on all the time on a given clip) → using proxy clips is not a good enough option either… cause creating low-res copies of all videos takes too much... and when you open the project on your fast machine, again, you need to change back to the hi-res video files... -- You are receiving this mail because: You are watching all bug changes.

WHAT YOU WOULD WANT is that once you have completed your part it could be copy-pasted to another project... the other way to achieve the same thing could be rendering the parts individually and joining them by avidemux.. which is cool.. BUT in Sony Vegas there is this "document-like" concept, that each project is a document.. you just open it, work on it, copy- from it, paste into another one, etc. AND I LOVE that.. I mean, in my (simple) experience it proved to be totally liberating.. - - - - - - ANOTHER use-example... imagine you have a project and you would like to use 10 minutes from another project of yours... but with some minor modifications... it would be great if you could copy that 10 minutes of that project, into your present project... - - - - okay, just a short "counter example"... you have two videos.. two KDENLIVE projects.. one you are working on, and one you created last month... now you would like to have 5 minutes of that video from last month... but when you realize that, you have already made 15 minutes of your new project... what are your options? edit separately, create a save-as project from the one you need 5 minutes of, export it, and export your project.. in 2 pieces, A and C.. and join them with avidemux like A-B-C? it would be great if it could be done like "copy and paste that 5 mins from that project into this one".. and life could go one... I don't know if these examples are good enough though :) -- You are receiving this mail because: You are watching all bug changes.
[kdenlive] [Bug 398791] New: copy paste between two projects in two running instances of kdenlive -- would be so cool !!
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=398791 Bug ID: 398791 Summary: copy paste between two projects in two running instances of kdenlive -- would be so cool !! Product: kdenlive Version: 18.08.0 Platform: Other OS: Linux Status: REPORTED Severity: wishlist Priority: NOR Component: User Interface Assignee: j...@kdenlive.org Reporter: j...@cspv.hu Target Milestone: --- I think the long title of this enhancement suggestion seems to be already clear enough.. I don't want to make it longer than necessary:) the rest below take as a "PS".. -- PS: So, additionally, I'd like to argue why copy paste between projects is a cool thing... in short: because you can work on a part of a film separately... which is a GREAT thing... even in the case of a 12 minutes long video... both premiere pro and vegas makes this possible, they even make importing projects as a "video" into the timeline.. which you know, I'm saying this for those who have not tried those programs... as far as I can tell, by guessing, the only things to be handled are: creating a new project file (as if committing SAVE AS ... and then deleting everything from the timeline) importing the media involved in the copy-pasted section... checking if the media to be imported already exists in the project and preventing overwriting it - - - it could be a basic criterion for the "PARTS" or "SECTIONS" to have the exact same project settings as the "MAIN" project file... KDENLIVE, as a FREE application makes collaborative projects possible to an unprecedented extend :) being able to work on one part, one section of the video separately could be a HUGE step even further ahead :) -- You are receiving this mail because: You are watching all bug changes.
