yes, thanks, but I find this all hugely complicated (I am using several dual
screen set ups at home and at work), so I don't mind just killing the panels
and create a new one. My point was, however, this seems to truly fix the
problem described in this thread here, and maybe therefore provides a hint at
what is causing the CPU load?

Noticed this many times on opensuse (presently leap 42.1, but also earlier),
sometimes it comes sometimes it goes.

But I found a workaround by deleting the panel (noting there were actually
several behind each other, I removed them all) and then creating a fresh one.
This one still shows, although the connection is stable, the circling
"connecting to..." symbol, but what is important, the CPU load and fan activity
is gone.
