+1, workaround with closing laptop's cover to suspend it and restoring after
that to turn the backlight on works for me too.

Yes, it doesn't turn on when the backlight is off. It seems to happen when it
has been off for a while.

If I've tried to replicate it I've waited some seconds after the backlight has
gone off and then I moved the mouse, and it did turn on.

While when I leave it there longer it doesn't turn on.

How can I better debug this behavior?

Do you mean it doesn't wake up when it is actually turned off (ie. backlight
also off) or during the grace period where it just shows a black screen (with a
mouse)?
