The bug report I marked this a duplicate of said this happened with Intel, but not Nvidia. After selecting a rectangular region and then hitting the esc key, the app now closes and I have to reopen it. I did notice that under the same user account in Wayland, Spectacle works fine. I tested the same process on my ZBook 17 G4 and G6, both with Nvida cards and having the same issue. I recently got another bug report showing a similar effect where colors get washed out. The reporter said they have an Nvidia Optimus laptop, but the effect only happened when they were using their Intel GPU. This is not intentional.
