I can confirm that running the 7.1.0 x64 AppImage version on Ubuntu 18.10 with 
Cinnamon desktop, I cannot reproduce the issue.

I had the same problem Digikam 5.5.

It appears that in  the .config/digikamrc two settings affect this

in the section [General Settings]
Height 1024=1024
Width 1280=1280

When I replaced the values with approx half the value evrything worked
correctly.

If it doesn't work for you delete or rename the digikamrc.
