I agree that the double click should zoom in, but in my case it causes the
program to fail (i.e., the window and process disappear). 

How can I gather more information?

We can only guess what is meant by fails. A double click zooms into the map. If
you expect the images to take over the geolocation position, this will work
with Drag from the image list into the map.
