The "Fit to Windows" button in the editor has a special feature that also
exists due to user wishes. It changes from "Fit to Windows" to the last zoom
level.

I wasn't aware of the fit-to-window button, so I'm betting I accidentally
clicked it during an editing session. I could duplicate the behavior I was
seeing by activating the button inside the image editor. If I deactivate it
during an editing session then everything behaves as expected. Interestingly,
the button icon only changes (on or off) in the image editor; it doesn't change
outside the image editor.

In the preview mode you should press the "Fit to Window" button in the lower
status bar, then the image will also be adjusted after a crop. If you fit the
image with the slider, it is a zoom level that is maintained, so the image is
then smaller after the crop. This change was added by a user via a merge
request. Once a zoom factor has been set, it must be retained throughout and
not automatically reset to "Fit to Window".
