I use the same version of MacOS, on a macbook pro intel computer as Bruce. If i select an album with JPEG or HEIF files, and run Slideshow with F9, all work as expected. But if i press the configure slideshow button, the dialog appears in full screen. press close or ok button, give a black screen. I can always access to the main menu of digiKam on the top. i can restart the slideshow by the View menu and contents and bar on the bottom reappears. Pressing stop buttom give a black screen. Going to main menu on top and quit digiKam will restore the slideshow configure dialog while few second and digiKam stop normally. I suspect that slideshow configure dialog is the problem here. Only once, after exercising the two function keys did a different screen display briefly (I think it was a slide show preference screen) and there was a floatation ring (help) displayed bottom left. I haven't been able to reproduce that particular result though. Normally: F1 displays "About SlideShow Plugin" window. F2 displays "Rename" window. Once those two function keys have been exercised and I have hit "esc" to exit the slide show, I cannot re-initiate slide show. No response when pressing play.
