If there is currently a GUI error message when you try to do this in Dolphin,
can you attach it to this bug report? At the moment I don't have an encfs
filesystem I can test on.

Thanks a ton Elvis and Nate -- greatly appreciate it. I'll switch the
"Importance" to "Wishlist", I guess; let me know if I should change anything
else.

Sounds like we need to make that clear in the GUI when a user tries it, in
addition to supporting efforts to remove that limitation. Can we use this bug
to track the former?

Yeah encfs supports only 190 chars in pathnames.

I did indeed encrypt my Home folder (after manually setting root, home, and
swap partitions) during the guided Kubuntu setup...

Are you using disk encryption?

I see some commits from way back when guarding against long file paths because
of restrictions in ext2 and ext3. Obviously those are no longer relevant for
ext4 filesystems.

Length > 255 doesn't work either, but everything I've tried and failed to
create has been in the 180-230 character range for the full path. (Was just
trying to bound the problem based on some follow-up questions I'd gotten on
Reddit; sorry if it introduced ambiguity.)

...But you *can* write files with more than 255 characters?
