The crackling has recently appeared usually after an edit. My audio settings are Audio backend: SDL Audio driver: Automatic Audio device: default Until now I had never even looked at them. This worked, thank you! At first I switched between all of them and that didn't fix it, but when I restarted kdenlive after switching it to DirectSound, then added the video files again there was no weird crackling noise.
