xrender is just a remnant of the various attempts to minmize the constant
plasmashell crashes.
since there's apparently no documentation whatsoever: what are the differences
and why would OpenGL be better?

You are using xrender compositing. Is that wanted? Can you try whether using
OpenGL works better?
