I gave up trying to remove the widget. After several restarts during the normal
course of usage and updates, the issue magically resolved itself. I could
suddenly highlight and move the widget.

I'm at a loss for an explanation.

In the meantime, I'm loving Plasma5.

I've seen something similar recently where I accidentally dropped a file into
my panel and the widget was there but I failed to remove it as there were other
widgest ontop of it; seems the panel layouting gets confused at times.
