At very least it's ambigious: The user may believe to operate on the mail he's looking at while actually treating the selected one. I honestly do not think that this is discoverable without additional UI work. You would know how to use it because you offered this idea, but try to imagine someone new creating such a scenario by accident. I can use the message widget but I was not expecting this behavior. I was expecting when a message was selected it would be enough to trigger the reply options. Do you have a reason for this?
