[plasmashell] [Bug 371717] Containment for the second monitor is lost and reset to its default settings on boot or when it is connected

2022-06-10 Thread Michal Ziabkowski
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=371717

--- Comment #44 from Michal Ziabkowski  ---
A little update: the situation seems to have changed in that now I reliably get
a black background which fixes itself in about 30 seconds. Which begs the
question - is there some kind of preset timeout somewhere in plasma-shell or
kscreen code, after which the outputs are re-probed or the containment is
updated? Unlike what I reported earlier, now the behavior is totally
reproducible.

My educated guess is that there is a race condition between plasma-shell and
kscreen. The latter is probably reconfiguring my other screen to be 1080p AFTER
Plasma is already running and the containment has been created.

I haven't mentioned it, since it didn't seem relevant at the time, but I'm
using systemdBoot=true. It's probably worth seeing if forcing
plasma-kscreen.service to start before plasma-plasmashell.service (but after
plasma-kwin_x11.service, I assume?) changes anything.

I've played around with the options that QCollator offers, but we can't change

This would eat the space also for people who's password starts with a space,
which could be very confusing. Maybe another solution would be to display a
message suggesting to press a key that don't normally produce a character to
"wake up" the login screen? like escape, enter, ctrl, shift or something.

[okular] [Bug 455115] New: Show pop-up notes text more directly

2022-06-10 Thread Albert Zeyer
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=455115

Bug ID: 455115
   Summary: Show pop-up notes text more directly
   Product: okular
   Version: unspecified
  Platform: Other
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
 Component: general
  Assignee: okular-de...@kde.org
  Reporter: alb...@gmail.com
  Target Milestone: ---

Situation: I have a PDF with many review pop-up notes.

Currently I need to focus the app first and then hover the mouse over such a
pop-up note and after a few seconds the text appears, but disappears when I
move away the mouse.

Alternatively, I can also rightclick it, click "Open Pop-up Note", then it
shows it (quite unreadable, black text on a very dark blue background), then I
need to click on its close button afterwards.

I now need to go through about 5000 such review notes, and for each of it I
basically need to copy & paste it into a separate (Latex editor) at the right
place. The way pop-up notes are displayed in Okular makes this very annoying. I
also consistently need to switch focus from the editor to Okular such that the
mouse hover works.

So, this is a feature request to make this better somehow. I'm somewhat open to
how exactly, as long as it would simplify such a workflow (which is probably
not so uncommon). Some potential things:

- Make the mouse hover also works when the Okular app does not have the focus.
- Make the mouse hover instant without delay.
- Make the mouse hover less exact, already show it when I'm close to it, or
just maybe always show the nearest pop-up note.
- Keep the mouse hover pop-up text open even when I move away the mouse!
- Always show the pop-up notes, for example in the review pane, or in another
separate pane.

Printing to a real printer still sends a bitmap to the printer. As I wrote:

What QtWebEngine cannot do is print directly to a QPrinter. The Chromium code
can only output PDFs. Then you have to get that PDF to the printer somehow. How
QtWebEngine does it is that it renders the PDF to a pixmap using the PDFium
library that happens to be bundled with Chromium and then sends that pixmap to
the printer. How Okular prints PDFs (and how Falkon used to do it at the
beginning) is that it runs the lpr CLI command to send the PDF to the printer.
The main difficulty with that is that you have to translate settings such as
margins or page orientation or they will just get ignored, and that it also
only works with printers that lpr knows about (e.g., you cannot print to PDF
with that approach).

Hi,

printing to PDF file is OK. The PDF file has real "text" and fonts are
embedded. This has been fixed.

Printing to a real printer produces blurred text. The quality is very poor and
the text is not easy to read. Can someone please take a look at this. KMail

[okular] [Bug 455112] New: Improve documentation for compiling on Ubuntu

2022-06-10 Thread Albert Zeyer
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=455112

Bug ID: 455112
   Summary: Improve documentation for compiling on Ubuntu
   Product: okular
   Version: unspecified
  Platform: Other
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
 Component: general
  Assignee: okular-de...@kde.org
  Reporter: alb...@gmail.com
  Target Milestone: ---

I'm not really sure where to report this. This is a request to improve the
documentation, to make it simpler for Ubuntu users to compile it from source
and to set up a development environment to work on Okular.

Here is a list of packages I needed to install to be able to compile (but I
already had build-essential and many others, so this is maybe incomplete):

cmake build-essential libqt5svg5-dev libkf5activities-dev libphonon4qt5-dev
libtiff-dev libkf5purpose-dev libqt5texttospeech5-dev libpoppler-dev
libpoppler-cpp-dev libpoppler-qt5-dev
libfreetype-dev libspectre-dev
libkf5kexiv2-dev
libzip-dev libdjvulibre-dev libqmobipocket-dev
libmarkdown2-dev
libepub-dev libchm-dev

However, now I'm still stuck at this (although I have installed them, see
above):

-- Checking for module 'libspectre'
--   No package 'libspectre' found
-- Could NOT find LibSpectre (missing: LIBSPECTRE_LIBRARY
LIBSPECTRE_INTERNAL_FOUND) (Required is at least version "0.2")
-- Found CHM: /usr/include/
-- Checking for module 'libmarkdown'
--   No package 'libmarkdown' found
-- Could NOT find Discount (missing: Discount_LIBRARIES)
-- Checking for module 'libmarkdown'
--   No package 'libmarkdown' found
-- Could NOT find Discount (missing: Discount_LIBRARIES)

-- The following REQUIRED packages have not been found:

 * LibSpectre (required version >= 0.2), A PostScript rendering library,

   Support for PS files in okular. You can make the dependency optional adding
LibSpectre to the FORCE_NOT_REQUIRED_DEPENDENCIES cmake option
 * Discount, A library that gives you formatting functions suitable for marking
down entire documents or lines of text,

   Support for Markdown documents in Okular. You can make the dependency
optional adding Discount to the FORCE_NOT_REQUIRED_DEPENDENCIES cmake option

You may want to try starting mariadb with `innodb_force_recovery=X` specified
in `~/.local/share/akonadi/mysql.conf`, where X would be a number from 1 to 6.

[okular] [Bug 455118] Documentation on development workflow

2022-06-10 Thread Albert Zeyer
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=455118

--- Comment #2 from Albert Zeyer  ---
Ah so I should follow the general KDE dev docs?

I did that now and then I get this error:
```
$ kdesrc-build okular
kdesrc-build requires some minimal support to operate, including support
from the Perl runtime that kdesrc-build is built upon.
Some mandatory Perl modules are missing, and kdesrc-build cannot operate
without them.  Please ensure these modules are installed and available to Perl:
IO::Socket::SSL
one of (YAML::XS, YAML::PP, YAML::Syck)
kdesrc-build can do this for you on many distros:
Run 'kdesrc-build --initial-setup'
```
(Of course I ran `kdesrc-build --initial-setup` already.)

I thought that other KDE/Qt packages usually use qmake, so I thought that
Okular is an exception by using cmake and it would not follow the regular KDE
packages.

Akonadi fresh install error mariadb

I'm seeing the same issue after installing mariadb 10.8.3 on Arch.

What worked here:
- delete "~.local/share/akonadi/db_data" (make a backup first)
- run "akonadictl start"

That creates a new, working DB.

[okular] [Bug 455118] New: Documentation on development workflow

2022-06-10 Thread Albert Zeyer

  Platform: Other
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED

  Reporter: alb...@gmail.com
  Target Milestone: ---

I did not find documentation on this, so this is a request to create some
documentation on this process. (This is not just asking for help but asking to
improve the documentation.)

I wonder how the standard process looks like, how to work on the code.

You configure cmake in some build directory, and then do make to recompile.

But then what? Always make install first to some temp dir? Or can you directly
execute the binary? Do you need to setup the LD path such that it finds the so
files?

It tells me to install it, which I did. So what should I do now?

But also, this is a report to improve the documentation specifically about
installing on Ubuntu. Or is your statement that you don't want to have such
information in your documentation?

It already does exactly that. Seems like your hardware treats that 1% as a
signal to turn the screen completely off.

Please, test your setup more and tell us what's the lowest limit when the
screen is not turned off yet. You may write raw values to sysfs backlight
'files', use xbacklight or whatever the tool you are using.

[kscreenlocker] [Bug 455122] New: First keypress is not forwarded to password input box on X11

2022-06-10 Thread Kishore Gopalakrishnan
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=455122

Bug ID: 455122
   Summary: First keypress is not forwarded to password input box
on X11
   Product: kscreenlocker
   Version: 5.24.90
  Platform: Other
OS: Other
Status: REPORTED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
 Component: greeter
  Assignee: plasma-b...@kde.org
  Reporter: kishor...@gmail.com
CC: bhus...@gmail.com
  Target Milestone: ---

SUMMARY
When you lock the screen, a picture is shown without any user info or a
password entry box. Pressing any key on the keyboard brings the keyboard focus
to the box, but the character which the user pressed is ignored (i.e. the box
starts empty). This means that if a user just tries to type their password from
the lock screen, they will always miss the first character on the first
attempt, leading to an incorrect password. As far as I remember, this problem
wasn't there in 5.24.5.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Lock screen
2. Press any letter key

OBSERVED RESULTS
Password dialog is shown, with no character entered

EXPECTED RESULTS
Key pressed should have been entered into the password dialog

Operating System: Arch Linux
KDE Plasma Version: 5.24.90
KDE Frameworks Version: 5.94.0
Qt Version: 5.15.4
Kernel Version: 5.18.2-arch1-1 (64-bit)
Graphics Platform: X11
Processors: 8 × AMD Ryzen 5 3500U with Radeon Vega Mobile Gfx
Memory: 21.5 GiB of RAM

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Seems similar to an existing Wayland-only bug (bug 397318), but I get this
issue on X11 since 5.24.90.

On Wayland, I can always focus it with Ctrl+F. But I can reproduce that you
can't use the up arrow key to get back to it.

Regardless, once you start typing, doesn't it automatically put text in the
search field?

In the config dialog, we could probably change the UI slightly when you have
multiple screens. I don't know if this is technically feasible, but maybe we
could change the "Apply" button in the corner to say "Apply to This Display"
and add another one next to it that says "Apply to All Displays".

If that's not technically feasible, we could add a checkbox elsewhere in the
window saying "Apply changes made here to all displays", and then when checked,
any changes you make when you click the Apply or OK button would be applied to
all connected displays.

Got it. So you want a floating panel to remain floating in when set to
"Auto-hide", "Windows Can cover," and "Windows go Below" modes? Seems
reasonable.
