[plasmashell] [Bug 378168] New: Automatically disappearing Panels don't show up again after some time
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=378168 Bug ID: 378168 Summary: Automatically disappearing Panels don't show up again after some time Product: plasmashell Version: 5.9.4 Platform: Archlinux Packages OS: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: NOR Component: Panel Assignee: plasma-b...@kde.org Reporter: m...@elbmurf.de Target Milestone: 1.0 I have a side panel that frequently does not show up when I'm hovering the mouse on the screen border. The panel is configured to automatically disappear. It works flawlessly with new sessions but with older sessions – I can't say what is triggering this – suddenly it just stops appearing again. The only workaround to get it show up again is to open the monitor settings and to switching the primary screen from none to this one (I have just one monitor). This annoying behaviour is nothing new, I've had this with any Plasma 5 release. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are watching all bug changes.
[plasmashell] [Bug 354111] Plasma 5 login with multiple monitors is absurdly slow compared to 4.x
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=354111 --- Comment #20 from Maximilian Böhm <m...@elbmurf.de> --- Can confirm this, glad I’m not the only one. Disabling the splash screen does indeed work around the issue. On, it takes my AMD FX-8350 with SSD 32 sec to fully login vs 7 sec with second monitor disconnected. This bug clearly needs to be resolved. I’m actually baffled that this is a thing at all. One would assume that the KDE dev group would have some overlap with the group of power users having multiple monitor setups. Back then with a Radeon HD 7770, a R9 380 and now a RX 480, all with free drivers (radeon/AMDGPU) on different motherboards. It's very simple: Sometimes, not every time, but by around 50% of tries, the screen freezes when I initiate the "Desktop Grid"/"Raster" effect. Sometimes this doesn't freeze the screen directly but seems to make the WM somehow 'sick' so it crashes/freezes at a random other effect over the next half hour. I can only reset the X server, lose work in the process and do a relogin. All other effects run fine without crashing Kwin or freezing the screen. I thought a long time this must be a somehow driver related bug, pointing the finger at AMD's poor driver quality in the past, but after three years, this is rather unlikely. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are watching all bug changes.

[kwin] [Bug 433589] Kwin crash with libepoxy since Plasma 5.21.0
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=433589 Maximilian Böhm changed: What|Removed |Added Status|REPORTED|RESOLVED Resolution|--- |WORKSFORME --- Comment #7 from Maximilian Böhm --- Problem solved by deleting Kwin config files in ~/.config and /.local/share and a reconfiguration afterwards. Possible reasons for this bug: I was using the Kwin-Lowlatency fork during Plasma 5.20’s lifetime. It wasn’t compatible with Plasma 5.21, so I had to switch back to the mainline Kwin. The Lowlatency fork could theoretically have made harmful modifications to my config. Other possibilities: This Kwin config was very old and grown since I think the Plasama 4 days. Plasma 5.21’s Kwin could have introduced something my config was in conflict with. There were some other minor problems like missing chrome/frame in the standard transparent program switcher or missing "X" buttons in the Exposé/'present window' effect, these are also gone now with the reset. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are watching all bug changes.

I have been using this effect since the Compiz days in 2007, switched over to Plasma 4’s Kwin in 2011 and used this effect ever since – including the switch animation and even associated a mouse button to activate cube view to turn the cube. It has been a tremendous effective demo for potential Linux switchers. I have even loved the 3D stacked view of floating windows in the cube view. ;(( The slide animation has no soul to it. It’s terribly sterile. And I’m loosing my mental concept of windows stacked in a virtual space. What’s next, remove wobbly windows? Guys, that’s a bummer! ;(( If it had low statistic usage, maybe because it wasn’t the default? Just a wild guess. [kwin] [Bug 443410] Please restore the Desktop Cube switching effect
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=443410 --- Comment #22 from Maximilian Böhm --- Not true, Vista came out in November of 2006. Same year I first played with XGL and an early Compiz. Vista Beta 1 already had the Aero Glass UI with Flip 3D in 2005. It was Microsoft’s attempt to out-bling Apple’s Exposé, albeit with an inadequate desktop integration. Maybe you are mistaking it with Windows 7? So in all fairness, Microsoft invented the 3D window stack. Compiz’ 3D cover flip was inspired by iTunes’ albums cover flipping, and its Flip 3D copy came in the same time frame. It was truly a atmosphere of departure for the Linux desktop back then, every month new effect ideas and refinements in Compiz/Beryl/Compiz Fusion. Kwin basically copied the Compiz base effects starting in Plasma 4 whereas Compiz was engulfed by Canonical/Unity and then basically buried. Kwin’s effects arsenal *is* the spiritual successor of Compiz and with that comes some responsibility for users that have based their workflow on its mechanics for about 14 years now. Please forgive my off-topic excursus but this is a pretty emotional affair about what you expect from and love about your personal desktop. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are watching all bug changes.

I wouldn’t switch to Gnome (LOL) but it demonstrates the UX potential the cube effect has. Look at its GitHub page: https://github.com/schneegans/Desktop-Cube – there are a couple of really great UI/UX ideas in the GIFs. Combine this with touch, like in the video demo and it gets astonishing. Nobody wanted to touch the cube effect in Kwin for a decade, which effectively made it freeze in its 2010ish code base and UI paradigms, but this effect holds so much potential if you think it through. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are watching all bug changes.

In my opinion, not for the better. The new effect is a zoom-in (and -out) of the window with a certain momentum and additional fade-in (and -out). The former Scale effect was a much more subtle zoom-in with fade-in, and its topping was a subtle tilting, related to the Glide effect but less striking. This new Scale effect does look cheaper, it reminds me of the first Compiz experiments. Especially the closing animation is way to ostentatious. It’s irritating (this is saying a lover of the Cube and Wobbly Windows). And the subtle tilting of the old version was a pleasant detail. If I look frame-by-frame, the new effect also has an ultra-short tilting phase, but right an the beginning of the fade-in (or -out) I’m attaching a visual comparison between the two effects in Plasma 5.23 and older and Plasma 5.24 (H.265 4K). -- You are receiving this mail because: You are watching all bug changes.

Have this broken transition since Plasma 5.23 and it’s still in 5.24. I’ve made a video demonstration: https://youtu.be/lPGfMIgAhP8 And to the topic of the new Overview effect: It cannot replace the Grid! In the grid, you can see all your workspaces in a panoramic fullscreen view – where you can interact with the windows, e.g. for making them visible on all workspaces via a right-click. The Overview is a carbon-copy of macOS’ Mission Control and it does make workspace management indeed simpler – for simpler users, primary on notebooks. If you have a desktop PC and you are a power-user who wants to have total control over lots of windows and as less necessary clicks as possible, the Overview effect is not for you.
