[print-manager] [Bug 378446] New: Moving print job to another printer fails
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=378446 Bug ID: 378446 Summary: Moving print job to another printer fails Product: print-manager Version: unspecified Platform: Other OS: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: NOR Component: general Assignee: dantt...@gmail.com Reporter: m.wegh...@posteo.de Target Milestone: --- Moving a print job from one print queue to another one fails in print-manager. I just retested with the current git version (master branch at commit 032be7246) on KDE neon. Steps to reproduce: * Make sure at least two printers are set up on the system. It is assumed that they are called "firstprinter" and "secondprinter" in the following. * Pause printer "firstprinter" (e.g. using the "Pause Printer" button in print-manager's view of the queue or using the command "cupsdisable firstprinter") * create a print job for printer "firstprinter" (e.g. using the command "echo hello | lp -d firstprinter") * show the queue using print-manager, e.g. by opening the queue from the applet or by directly using the command "kde-print-queue firstprinter" * try to move the print job to the other printer "secondprinter": * right click on the print job in the list * Select "Move to" -> "secondprinter" Actual Result: A dialog pops up, saying that moving the print job failed: "Failed to move '(stdin)' to 'secondprinter'". When clicking on the "Details" button, it says: "The printer or class does not exist." Expected result: The print job should successfully be moved to the other printer and printed on it. I have worked on a solution quite a while ago and am planning to supply a patch soon. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are watching all bug changes.

[okular] [Bug 373133] 16.12.0 Okular duplex printing on but no duplex printing done
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=373133 --- Comment #20 from Michael Weghorn <m.wegh...@posteo.de> --- I suppose that you are right that this is because the Qt 5 print dialog does no more display all options from the PPD, but only selected ones at the moment (like "Duplex"). In Firefox print dialog: Is the duplex option available in the "Page Settings" tab under "Two-sided" or only in an "Advanced" tab under "Two-Sided Printing" (or similar). The latter would confirm that it is handled as a "custom" PPD option (rather than the default "Duplex" option which would be shown in the "Page Settings" tab). In case the vendor-specific keyword is actually the cause and this is therefore the general problem with Qt 5's current printing dialog, I currently see no "reasonable" way of adding support in Okular, rather than working on Qt itself. For reference: Some discussion about printer-specific options in the Qt 5 print dialog has also taken place on the Qt development mailing list in January and February, s. thread "Printer-specific options in Qt5's print dialog (Linux, CUPS)" at [1] and [2]. [okular] [Bug 373133] 16.12.0 Okular duplex printing on but no duplex printing done
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=373133 --- Comment #24 from Michael Weghorn <m.wegh...@posteo.de> --- (In reply to Gunter Ohrner from comment #23) > It's also a Brother printer (DCP 7065DN) but actually seems to use the > standard Duplex keyword. The fact that it uses the "Duplex" option seems to explain why it works so well in other applications. I just set up a dummy printer with that PPD and checked what options are passed to CUPS when printing from Konqueror and Okular. In my case, both options "Duplex" and "sides" were passed as expected for both Okular and Konqueror (using current KDE neon gitstable), so I wonder a bit why the two applications behave differently when printing to a real printer. Does a user-specific default value as described in comment 9 possibly play a role? (I did not have such a file '~/.cups/lpoptions'.) In addition, CUPS's 'error_log' file with Debug level enabled might help, as described in comment 12, point 1). [As far as I understand this issue right now, different aspects might come into play when using either the standardized "Duplex" keyword or a vendor-specific one, so I think it might possibly make sense to split this up into two separate bug reports in case this assumption is confirmed by your reply to the above answers (to make it possible to better focus on the single aspects).] -- You are receiving this mail because: You are watching all bug changes.
[okular] [Bug 373133] 16.12.0 Okular duplex printing on but no duplex printing done
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=373133 --- Comment #9 from Michael Weghorn <m.wegh...@posteo.de> --- I had a look at this and have an idea what MIGHT be the reason: Okular uses the options "sides=one-sided", "sides=two-sided-short-edge", and "sides=two-sided-long-edge" to specify whether or not to do duplex printing. Those options are passed to the "lpr" command. On the other hand, PPD files have a standardized keyword "Duplex" that uses values of "None", "DuplexTumble", and "DuplexNoTumble" to specify the same option (s. PPD specification). I made some tests and it seems to me like the PPD option "Duplex" takes precedence over the "sides" option in case both are given. Since Okular does not explicitly pass any value for the "Duplex" option, CUPS uses the user's default value specified for the printer in '$HOME/.cups/lpoptions' in case that exists. Example content of a '$HOME/.cups/lpoptions' file that specifies that no duplexing should be done: ~~~ $ cat .cups/lpoptions Default HL2280DW Duplex=None ~~~ So if that option is set, the duplex option set in Okular simply has no effect, since it is overriden by the other value. Could somebody of those who are affected verify whether the above assumption matches their situation - in particular, whether the file '$HOME/.cups/lpoptions' exists and has a respective value and whether the problem goes away after renaming/deleting the file? Additional note: The attached PPD file uses the vendor-specific keyword "BRDuplex" instead of "Duplex", but the situation might still be the same. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are watching all bug changes.

I removed it anyway and still, > printing is done with duplex no matter whether "None" or "Long Side" is set > in okular printing dialog Thank you very much for testing. Is the behaviour for you right now exactly the opposite as it was when you initially opened the bug report? As far as I understand your first comment, all pages were printed on single pages back then and are now always printed duplex, no matter what value is set in Okular's print dialog for that option. Did I understand that correctly? The following two things might help in further narrowing down the issue: 1) Provide information from CUPS's log file: * increase log level by setting Directive 'LogLevel debug' in CUPS's config file '/etc/cups/cupsd.conf' * restart CUPS, e.g. by running 'sudo systemctl restart cups' * try printing from Okular again, setting the respective options in the print dialog * It would be particularly helpful if you could do this once for every available option for duplex printing ("None", "Long Side", "Short Side") * attach the log file '/var/log/cups/error.log' (or relevant parts of it) to this bug report, in particular the line containing "[Job ] argv[5]" is relevant, as it contains the options passed to CUPS. 2) Try with modified PPD file that uses the default keyword "Duplex" for the duplex option Is the result still the same when you use the modified PPD file "hl4150cdn_MODIFIED.ppd" that I have attached to this bug? (The only modification is that I have replaced the vendor-specific keyword "BRDuplex" with the standard keyword "Duplex", which might change how this is handled in Qt and/or Okular). In order to use the modified PPD, you can run the following command in the directory where the modified PPD is located: lpadmin -p -P hl4150cdn_MODIFIED.ppd The same command with the previous PPD file given will reassign that PPD again. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are watching all bug changes.

[okular] [Bug 373133] 16.12.0 Okular duplex printing on but no duplex printing done
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=373133 --- Comment #16 from Michael Weghorn <m.wegh...@posteo.de> --- Thank you for providing more information. I think that the problem (or at least a part of it) is that the PPD uses the vendor-specific "BRDuplex" keyword instead of the standardized "Duplex" one and the printer possibly ignores the "Duplex" options in the modified PPD. The log file shows that the option "sides=one-sided" is even present for the case where you chose "long sided" in the Okular print dialog (which in my expectation should have resulted in "sides=two-sided-long-edge"). From a quick glance, this might be because Qt only handles the "Duplex" keyword to decide whether a printer supports duplex. When I try with the modified PPD file, I can see that the option "sides=two-sided-long-edge" is set as expected in the CUPS log (with no real printer available, I don't get any output however). Since you said that this does not work either, the proprietary Brother printer driver ignores it as it only handles its own vendor-specific option... Are there other applications where setting the duplex option in the print dialog does work as expected? (I just came across https://askubuntu.com/questions/766471/non-standard-keywords-in-postscript-printer-driver-ppd-break-integration-with) where somebody else describes problems with the Brother-specific keywords.) Is it possible that you had previously changed the system-wide setting for the duplex option and this is now back to the default since you used the original PPD file again (since duplex is deactivated again)? Is duplex enabled again for the printouts when you run 'lpoptions -p -o BRDuplex=DuplexNoTumble' (and disabled after running 'lpoptions -p -o BRDuplex=None')? (This writes the respective value to '$HOME/.cups/lpoptions' and is basically what my assumption in comment 9 was, but there seems to be more to it in conjunction with the vendor-specific keyword.) -- You are receiving this mail because: You are watching all bug changes.

[okular] [Bug 331697] can't fill out pdf form
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=331697 --- Comment #10 from Michael Weghorn <m.wegh...@posteo.de> --- I analysed the problem with the attached PDF form. As far as I understand it so far, the root cause is basically an "incorrect" PDF file, not Poppler. For easier analysis in a text editor, I created a "cleaned" version of the document using the command "mutool clean -d -a bug331697.pdf" which makes binary streams being ASCII encoded and decompresses streams. The resulting PDF document is attached as file "bug331697_MUTOOL_CLEANED.pdf". The PDF specification (https://www.adobe.com/content/dam/Adobe/en/devnet/acrobat/pdfs/pdf_reference_1-7.pdf) describes how appearance streams for variable text must be created, s. p. 677ff; extract: [Start quote] "For non-rich text fields, the appearance stream—which, like all appearance streams, is a form XObject—has the contents of its form dictionary initialized as follows: • The resource dictionary ( Resources ) is created using resources from the inter- active form dictionary’s DR entry (see Table 8.67); see also implementation note 118 in Appendix H. • The lower-left corner of the bounding box ( BBox ) is set to coordinates (0, 0) in the form coordinate system. The box’s top and right coordinates are taken from the dimensions of the annotation rectangle (the Rect entry in the widget anno- tation dictionary). • All other entries in the appearance stream’s form dictionary are set to their default values (see Section 4.9, “Form XObjects”). [...] The default appearance string ( DA ) contains any graphics state or text state oper- ators needed to establish the graphics state parameters, such as text size and color, for displaying the field’s variable text. Only operators that are allowed within text objects may occur in this string (see Figure 4.1 on page 197). At a minimum, the string must include a Tf (text font) operator along with its two operands, font and size . The specified font value must match a resource name in the Font entry of the default resource dictionary (referenced from the DR entry of the interactive form dictionary; see Table 8.67). [End quote] The corresponding object for the first form field in the ("cleaned") PDF file, "Startbahnhof", is the following widget annotation: ~~~ 417 0 obj << /DA (/Helvetica 10 Tf 0 g) /F 4 /FT /Tx /Ff 12582912 /MK 473 0 R /P 370 0 R /Rect [ 98.7881 466.621 430.018 482.513 ] /StructParent 5 /Subtype /Widget /T (S1F4) /TU (Startbahnhof) /Type /Annot /V <> >> endobj ~~~ It contains a "DA" (default appearance) entry of "/Helvetica 10 Tf 0 g" As described in the quote above, the "DR" entry from the interactive form dictionary is used to initialize the resources in the appearance stream to be constructed. The interactive form dictionary is the following object: ~~~ 411 0 obj << /DA (/Helv 0 Tf 0 g ) /DR << /Encoding << /PDFDocEncoding 91 0 R >> /Font << /Helv 90 0 R /ZaDb 435 0 R >> >> /Fields [ 89 0 R 50 0 R 87 0 R 88 0 R 62 0 R 63 0 R 81 0 R 82 0 R 66 0 R 67 0 R 40 0 R 41 0 R 68 0 R 414 0 R 415 0 R 416 0 R 418 0 R 417 0 R 419 0 R 420 0 R 421 0 R 69 0 R 422 0 R 423 0 R 424 0 R 425 0 R 426 0 R 51 0 R 52 0 R 70 0 R 64 0 R 43 0 R 65 0 R 427 0 R 447 0 R 446 0 R 445 0 R 444 0 R 443 0 R 442 0 R 441 0 R 440 0 R 439 0 R 438 0 R 437 0 R 436 0 R 434 0 R 433 0 R 432 0 R 431 0 R 430 0 R 429 0 R 428 0 R 71 0 R 38 0 R ] /SigFlags 2 >> endobj ~~~ The contained default resources ("DR" entry) do contain a font called "Helvetica" as it is used in the "DA" entry of the form field (only one called "Helv"). For that reason, the appearance stream is not "properly" created, which leads to the text not being shown in the filled in form. The interactive form dictionary also contains a default appearance ("DA") entry. That one uses the font "Helv", which is specified in the resources. As explained on p. 673 in the PDF spec, that (optional) "DA" serves as a document-wide default value for the DA attribute of variable text fields. However, since the text field has its own value, the default value is not used for the form element in the given PDF file and the mismatch as described above occurs. For testing purposes, I removed the "DA" entry in the form field element for "Startbahnhof" (line 11622) (and had "mutool" fix the xref afterwards). The resulting PDF file is attached as "bug331697_removedDA.pdf". With that modified file, the default DA entry specified in the interactive form dictionary is used, the font name "Helv" used there does match and the appearance stream is constructed as desired. The text is shown in Okular in the fi
