Re: [kde-freebsd] KDE 4/5

2016-06-04 Thread T.C.Berner
Hi Stari

For me plasma5 works great (I'm using it as my main desktop since ~2years).
kde-workspace4 is a longterm release (since a long time).

Issues with kde are best reported here, because else, it might get
overlooked.

[kde-freebsd] KDE 4/5

2016-06-03 Thread Stari Karp
Hi!

I have some questions about KDE:

Does Plasma (KDE 5) from area51 has still many problems?
Does KDE 4.14. 3 has still support from KDE?
Is better to ask questions with problems related to FreeBSD mailing list or
here on KDE mailing list?

Thank you very much.

Thanks for the pointer, very nice. I suggest: if you find similar PRs,
put those comments into the PR (instead of a mail 8-), put me in Cc:

Re: [kde-freebsd] KDE-FreeBSD: commiters and mentors needed

2016-05-29 Thread Ralf Nolden
Hi Kurt,

this PR is Qt related:

https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=198574

I have checked that with Virtualbox and witout the patch I get the messages:

Qt WARNING: libpng warning: iCCP: known incorrect sRGB profile

due to wrong png files, which the patch fixes.

I applied the patch from the PR and rebuild virtualbox, then retried. The
errors are away now.

More info on the underlying issue is found here:

https://forum.qt.io/topic/58638/solved-libpng-warning-iccp-known-incorrect-srgb-profile-drive-me-nuts

http://www.libpng.org/pub/png/libpng-manual.txt

Error detection in some chunks has improved; in particular the iCCP chunk
reader now does pretty complete validation of the basic format. Some bad
profiles that were previously accepted are now rejected, in particular the
very old broken Microsoft/HP sRGB profile. The PNG spec requirement that
only grayscale profiles may appear in images with color type 0 or 4 and that
even if the image only contains gray pixels, only RGB profiles may appear
in images with color type 2, 3, or 6, is now enforced. The sRGB chunk
is allowed to appear in images with any color type.

Yes, I was planning to do so but didn't get around to it before saturday night
.. by which time you'd already committed things.

I've filed one little PR for the ibase-plugin change that snuck in with another
PR, and updated audio/simon. I'll file smaller PRs in future (and watch ports
changes more closely, to avoid bouncing things around like Uses/qmake.mk).

So, one of the patches was reverted, because mat asked it to

Got it, so I implicitly assume maintainer-approval for those.

I'll do my normal build-testing on the PRs, so let's see how it

Hi Kurt, [removed Ralf and Tobias in CC, they'll get it through the list]

Right now all my open PRs can be found through
https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/buglist.cgi?quicksearch=reporter:gr...@kde.org

.

All these PRs as of today are KDE-related. All of them are part of pushing our
staging trunk, where we work on KDE updates in a kind-of-copy of the ports
tree, downstream so that we can ready our next cycle of KDE updates.

I don't think I can assign PRs in FreeBSD's bugzilla. Most of these PRs are
assigned to kde@ -- which is exactly the problem we're trying to tackle,
namely that kde@ is under-staffed. So I've added you as CC in one PR.

Let's go through these one at a time, if you have the time to do so slowly.
I've probably goofed up one or more patches in that gaggle of PRs -- almost
certainly wrt. the right number to give to patch -p . But that will help me
get a feel for how patches should really end up looking before they go into
PRs.

Thanks,
[ade]

PS. https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=205255 is a totally
unrelated port (of nethack) that I did earlier. I mention it here to show I've

Hi Kurt,

thanks for getting back - unfortunately neither of us is yet included in

[kde-freebsd] KDE jackd flag -l (was: kbiff zombies)

2015-06-05 Thread Matthias Apitz

I have modified the shell wrapper script for jackd as:

#!/bin/sh

printf \nnew jackd call, pid: %d\n $$ /tmp/jackd
echo args: $0 $* /tmp/jackd
/usr/local/bin/jackd.bin $*
echo last pg pid: $! /tmp/jackd
ps axl /tmp/jackd

and it turns out that all KDE components, already on KDE start the
/usr/local/bin/knotify4, are calling jackd as

/usr/local/bin/jackd -l

which is fine according the man page of jackd:

-l, --listen-port int
The socket port we are listening on for sync
packets (default: 3000)

but the source of jackd implements with -l only the printout of the
current working directory and exit(0):

case 'l':

/* special flag to allow libjack to determine

 * jackd's idea of where tmpdir is */

printf (%s\n, jack_tmpdir);

exit (0);

I have search in the KDE sources, without any luck, where 'jackd -l' is
issued to understand the problem; no luck; and for the moment I only can
say that there is some missimplementation, either in KDE or in jackd.

[kde-freebsd] KDE 4.14.2 *very* inresponsive to mouse events

2015-05-15 Thread Matthias Apitz

Hello,

I have a system with a 11-CURRENT r276659 amd64 and KDE 4.14.2 (all ports
compiled out
of SVN from January this year and installed as packages yesterday) on a
new netbook Acer C720 with 4 GByte RAM.

The system is very fast, KDE boots up from 'startx' in 25 seconds. The
KDE env was created in an empty HOME by the 1st KDE start. It is not
manageable with the mouse. The mouse itself is fine (checked with 'xev')
and the start of components is fast too (for example when one starts
'konqueror' from a xterm shell cmd line).

But, if you start something with the moues, it is inresponsive. For
example a click in the KDE-menu icon takes 1 minute to bring up the
control panel, and when you click there 'System Settings', it takes
another minute to bring up this window.

Where to look now? Thanks

I figured out what is causing the problem. In the dir ~/.kde4/Autostart/
for some error was located a normal text file without exec permissions;

$ ls -l .kde4/Autostart/
total 8
-rw-r--r-- 1 guru wheel 4 15 may 21:03 foo.txt

this brings up some process:

4239 - I 0:00,07 kdeinit4: kdeinit4: kate -b
/home/guru/.kde4/Autostart/foo.txt (kdeinit

which makes the full KDE unuseable; you can just try this :-) and remove
the file again and all is fine;

Where should I file a bug report?

[kde-freebsd] KDE broke after general package upgrade (Fbsd 10.0)

2015-03-25 Thread Gene

Hello all:

I recently upgraded packages on my 10.0 AMD64 sytem (pkg upgrade). Afterwards,
xorg started up normally and could be used, but KDE wouldn't run. Among the
 things I've tried:

 - Check .xinitrc: #exec /usr/local/bin/startkde
 - completely deleting ~/.kde4
 completely re-installing KDE4: pkg install -f x11/kde4

now xorg is still ok and startx results in a white screen that simply says:

Uh-oh. Something went wrong. Log out and try again. Of course I can't
actually log out so I connect via ssh and reboot.

Running KDM and logging in just jumps to a terminal window after logging in.

Any ideas where to continue troubleshooting?

 Thanks

[kde-freebsd] KDE~4.6 translations

2014-12-04 Thread Schaich, Alonso
Hello

Currently, we are having the following translation packages in
PORTS/area51 which have not seen any updated by upstream for a
considerable time:

Language Most recent KDE version
Cassubian (csb) 4.4.5
Frisian (fy) 4.5.5
Gujarati (gu)4.6.5
Kannada (kn) 4.7.4
Maithili (mai) 4.6.5
Macedonian (mk) 4.4.5
Malayalam (ml) 4.5.5
Sinhalese (si) 4.10.5
Tajik (tg) 4.11.5
Thai (th)4.10.5

While the 4.10 and 4.11 ports might still work these days I guess the
historic packages have broken (by not corresponding to any strings in
the binaries any more)

Is there any user who can comment on the listed translation's state?

Also, I'd like to drop these all together from area51 because they are
irrelevant for the kde PORTS development, unless there are objections
of cause.

Alonso

I'd say go for it and remove them from both area51 and ports; if those
translations ever reach the minimum amount required by KDE for them to
be included in a release, we can just ressurect the ports. I remember
there was a PR from a long time ago about removing some IGNOREd
translations from the tree, I don't remember if it is still open.

On the 4.14.2 system I have had to install multimedia/gstreamer1-plugins-all
(I'm using poudriere and have my own pkg repository) and I now have
installed the gstreamer* packages as you can see below. With this the
KDE jingle is played on login to the disktop; what is not working is, if you
go to System-Settings -- System Notification Configuration and play
there any given sound just for test, no sound is produced and it gives the
error messages attached below in the console where you run the 'startx' command.

 No, it's not.
My KDE has bug with GStreamer. Amarok doesn't play sounds with this bug:
Yes, it was a stupid question in my case. You might have another
issue/bug, but mine was a silly misconfiguration or an unwanted change

The workaround we are using is to build x11/kde4-workspace with VLC
instead of GSTREAMER, then nuke phonon-gstreamer. Makes audio work fine
in amarok and other phonon friends again.

I also lost sound when updating to 4.14.2. Thanks for the tip - this
works for me as well!

Thanks Kris, is working now but just work if I pkg remove -f
phonon-gstreamer. Could phonon-gstreamer don't be a mandatory dependecy
to another KDE packages anymore?

[kde-freebsd] KDE 4.12.5 or 4.14.2: no jingle when KDE comes up

2014-11-03 Thread Matthias Apitz

Hello,

Since 4.12.5 and 4.14.2 I'm missing the jingle bells when KDE comes up.
For the rest sound is fine. Any idea? Not that I'm depending on it, but
in an office full of Microsoft stations, it was always nice to get the
attention of my co-workers with this :-)

Thx

 After 10.1-RELEASE, I hope.

I hope to get it before the release. Why do you want it after?

I get very nervous about major port updates that involve large numbers
of ports and have a major impact on a lot of users just prior to a
release.

Looking at the schedule, which has not slipped at all (Amazing!), 10.1
is 2 weeks off. I'd hope that if it comes before 10.1 that there is
time for a package build and time for people to install it before the
10.1 release. This week's package build is underway and may be
complete. So if you get 4.14 out before next Wednesday, I guess it
should be OK, but if not, I'd suggest waiting until a week or two
after 10.1 hits the streets.

Probably I'm just being paranoid.

[kde-freebsd] kde-workspace does not build

2014-10-08 Thread peter weismann
WITH_NEW_XORG=yes caused my PC to hang, seriously hanging or even rebooting
without any chance to trouble-shoot. So I decided against that option.
When I now wanted to try a build of x11/kde4-workspace, I run into trouble. The
solution mentioned in here:

http://mail-index.netbsd.org/pkgsrc-bugs/2013/12/11/msg053037.html

did also work for me. (Of course, I had to edit the files manually).

I build without any options from the make config menu. So, even without GLES,
the problem happened.
I did not test, whether the exclusions would work with X-Server and option
WITH_NEW_XORG=yes, so in other words, whether #if GLX_GLXEXT_VERSION = 32
makes any sense.
But I would like to see such a simple patch to enable build on systems, where
WITH_NEW_XORG=yes is no suitable option.

Take care.

[kde-freebsd] kde-4.10.5 boot up time

2014-05-28 Thread Matthias Apitz

Hello,

Attached below is a log of what 'startkde' spills out as messages during
boot of the KDE4 with 'startx'. The overall process is very slow due to
the fact, that the 10-CURRENT and KDE is hosted on an USB stick, for
testing purpose, which is ofc much slower than a disk.

But there are two points in time where nothing is done (or printed)
for around a minute, see the points marked with a line

What could be the reason for these two delays?

Thx

[kde-freebsd] KDE Frameworks 5

2014-04-18 Thread pauline martin
I am trying to build the KDE Frameworks 5, (the next release of KDE) but I
am having problems building the tech-preview or the git versions of some of
its dependencies. Primarily strigi and attica. Is there anyone here that
has successfully built them that could help me to get the built.

I am getting errors similar to vsnprintf is not defined in the global
scope or something like wctroll is not defined in the global scope. All of
the errors I am getting in attica should be resolved with including cstdio
or stdio.h but I am not sure on if I hack the code if it would cause more
problems.

I can post the actual errors later, when I have time and I am at that
computer.

Please, if anyone has gotten them to all build let me know.

My machine's output of uname -a would look something like this. Sorry I am
doing this from memory

In ports/Mk/bsd.port.mk, there is this:

Would it be possible to bump that check to a lower value of OSVERSION?
radeonkms was imported into HEAD r254885, and this changeset
exists in stable/10.
We are working now on a patch to bump this to include 10.0-stable. The
reason why this wasn't bumped earlier was because it was deemed
unacceptable that there wasn't a console driver that could work with the
KMS driver. The infamous black screen when you started X, which stayed
black even if you quit X. Now that vt(9) was merged to 10.0-stable this
problem has been resolved, even if vt(9) isn't enabled by default yet.

I set WIT_NEW_XORG in my /etc/make.conf and rebuilt all my ports
and KDE works fine. My laptpo has a a Radeon:

0x/65536

On another note, it looks like with KDE 4.12 in ports, will there will
be no working
KDE desktop on FreeBSD-9?
Well I got some good news here, the radeonKMS driver was merged into
9.2-stable. And it being investigated/worked on to get vt(9) also merged
into the 9.2-stable branch. So we can switch to the new Xorg version
there too.

[kde-freebsd] KDE 4.12 on FreeBSD 10.0 Thick Client

2014-03-01 Thread pathiaki2

Hi,

I am trying to get KDE to work on a diskless client. I am not having
much luck getting the initial environment to come up correctly.
Everything is NFS mounted. System partitions are mounted read only (/
and /usr), things that require writing (/var, /usr/home,
/usr/local/share/config/kdm) are mounted with memory disks or NFS
mounted with read/write.

The issue is when I log in. This happens whether it's a user in the
'local' (NFS mounted) password file or the LDAP that I have now managed
to invoke with a KDE PAM module: I get a black screen with no toolbar
with a 'close a window' red X button where the 'K' menu should be and
two 'new activity' launchers in the upper and lower right corners.

Does anyone have a list as to what KDM/KDE does upon startup (like
copying files to user accounts and the locations of said files) so that
I can track down what is wrong?

Thank you,

[kde-freebsd] kde 4.12 and workspace 4.11

Hi!

I did update KDE from 4.11.4 to KDE 4.12.2 but in ports we have kdeworkspace
version 4.11.6. I didn't have hard time to build and installed KDE 4.12 but I
have unusual thinks now with KMail. First one is that I have identical Local
Folders. I cannot delete no one. I unsubscribe from one and it show me one but
there is still another one. I have email filters and they works but there are
still complain that cannot move email from Inbox to other folders. There are
five (5) identical Personal Contacts in Address Book.
Are those problems related to workspace 11.6, please. When I got an error
complaining about moving emails from Inbox to FreeBSD for examle it is comming
from Workspace.

Thank you very much.

Hi,

The mentioned packages were split in the transition from KDE 4.10 to 4.11,
while 4.11 was either never commited to FreeBSD ports (it was an area51
only thing) or was commited there only very recently. If you're updating from
4.11 to 4.12 you don't have to bother about those packages.

[kde-freebsd] KDE 4.12 and WITH_NEW_XORG=no

As we're finally close to getting the 4.12.1 ports into a reasonable
stable where everything builds, I'd like to start discussing merging
area51 back into ports -- we've already skipped the whole 4.11 release
cycle.

As I see it, the biggest question is what to do with WITH_NEW_XORG=no:
kde4-workspace will not build with the ancient version of Mesa that gets
build when WITH_NEW_XORG is disabled. And FreeBSD's pkg building cluster
does not enable this variable on its 8- and 9- builds, which mean we
wouldn't get part of the KDE packages built for those releases at all.

Just a note with my x11@ hat on:

As you probably know WITH_NEW_XORG is default on HEAD. The current plan
is to enable this on 10-stable in time for 10.1-R but that depends on if
vt(9) is merged by then. There is currently no reason to believe this

the moment, though should this be true it means we have a broken default
setup on FreeBSD 8, 9 and 10.

As maintainer of both, I can say that I'm not aware of any problems with
either port. I will check the mail report and see if I can find out
where that breakage comes from.

I don't see a problem here, we simply mark kde4-workspace as IGNORE.
It's not a big package loss: only 25 ports depends on kde-workpace, half of
them are plasmoinds, window decoration and style plugins. There is almost no

[kde-freebsd] KDE 4.12.1 kdegraphics4-mobipocket

2014-01-26 Thread Adriaan de Groot
I sent something about this before, but messed up the plist, which prompted my
earlier comment that the CMake config is broken. It's not broken, it has

it seems to be Qt-only)
 - fixes depends for nepomuk-core, which now needs the moved-in-the-dependency-

Qt 5 is NOT an upgrade of Qt 4, it's a different version of the
framework. Right now you can't use it for anything, but I'm working to
 make it committable.

As Alberto writes, Qt5 is not usuable with KDE 4. The situation is this:

 - KDE4 is QT4-only.
 - Qt5 is sometimes source-incompatible with Qt4
 - Qt5 introduces a strong emphasis on QML, which is new (relative to Qt4)
technology, although it's been available for, what, 2 years already.
 - With Qt5, KDE is now KDE Frameworks and KDE Applications, and the
entire layout of the packages they ship is changed; some things have moved
from kdelibs (developed in KDE4) into Qt, and the whole stack has become much
more modularized (some might say fragmented, but that's only if you're
building it yourself).
 - KDE Frameworks makes heavy use of the QML from Qt5.
 - I gather Qt5 is a hard nut already on FreeBSD
 - KDE Frameworks probably contains a year and a half of mostly-Linux
development and will be quite a challenge.

[kde-freebsd] KDE 4.11.5

So 4.11.4 is in area51 and is being polished up so it can be committed to
ports (I picked that up from other messages on the list recently). I have no
ports-fu to speak of, but I could grind away on the KDE side of the equation
by starting to build 4.11.5 or, heck, 4.12.2 which is just out.

What's a good way to do that? I'd like to stick close to ports + area51 if
posslble. Is the following list-of-things-to-do a good start?

1 bump the KDE version in KDE/Mk/bsd.Mk.kde
 2 fetch kdelibs update distinfo
3 try building that with the existing ports Makefile
4 futz around till it compiles
 5 update plist from stage
6 go to 2 with a port higher up the stack

I have kde-4.11.5 ports here, so far I don't see any new issues but alot of
ports still need plist checking, especially the minor translation
 (KDE/misc/*) ones.

I can commit 4.11.5 which I am using as desktop over here into area51 so

You should be able to safely update to 4.11.4 without any breakages (that were
not present in 4.11.3 too), therefore there's no UPDATING notice. I'm playing

[kde-freebsd] KDE SC 4.10.2 in area51

2013-04-15 Thread Max Brazhnikov
FYI,

I've updated area51 trunk to 4.10.2. Due to ports freeze in preparation for
8.4-release KDE SC 4.10.2 (and perhaps 4.10.3) is unlikely to be committed to
the portstree.

Cheers,

Actually all devel/kdebindings4-* are missing all content. I think there was a
renaming recently (can't find the commit right now), and
 devel/kdebindings4-smoke-smokegen
is now called
 devel/smokegen

There should currenlty not be any ports that depend on kdebindings4-smoke-

disappeared Makefiles.

Looking at the memory usage, do you think it could be a memory leak
somewhere?

With 9.1 taking so long to get wrapped up, do you think we may get
4.9.x into ports before it hits? I'm hopeful it has already been
fixed

upstream :)

I wanted to check on this to see if you had found anything or if the
newer version of KDE was coming anytime this year to the ports tree... I

Its happening on all the systems we've tested at the iX office. Various
nvidia cards, Intel i5 / i7 chipsets. On the laptop I tested here it is
running an ATI radeon 5400 series, i5 Proc. When this occurs, I don't
see any particular messages in dmesg or Xorg.0.log that would indicate
the problem. We've tried it with 3D enabled and disabled to try and rule
 that out.

Further information on this issue. I left two laptops running for about
6 days, both using KDE 4.8.4 and xorg-server-1.1.0.6,1.

One laptop was using the NVIDIA driver, another using ATI with the older
libdrm without KMS. On both systems, X began to use up more and more CPU
with the only thing running being a Konsole session with top being
displayed. On each system, no errors are shown in Xorg.0.log, or dmesg,
or anyplace else I could think of to check.

Here's the output of top after it had been running for a while:

I just attached my entire make.conf .. It's a bit cluttered, but it
works for me. :P

You can safely ignore the LIBCPLUSPLUS stuff.. It was an experiment, the
stability of my KDE system pre-existed that.. So that definitely has
nothing to do with it.

You guys might try switching from GDM to KDM and see what happens.

Kris,

No GDM here.

Using default distro of PC-BSD 9.1-RC1 as install.  No recompilations or
upgrades.

Using Nvidia GT5xx chipsets and Radeon 4 chipsets.

KDE is running beautifully on 4 different desktops.  No CPU or resource issues.

Xorg is whatever is latest in the ports built with the following global knobs:
 WITHOUT_NOUVEAU=yes
 WITH_NEW_XORG=yes
 WITH_KMS=yes
Both systems run KDE for weeks without any glitches.

 Just a data point.

That helps me track this down. We use the same make options, so maybe
something else in how we run KDE is causing the issue. Anybody else
using GDM as the login manager?

Kris,

I haven't seen xorg hit 100% but it does seem to creep up to about 20
to 30% on my system and this is after a longer time (week) vs just 1 to
