If it tries to grab all available memory and finally crashes, you're probably facing the consequences of a filter bug of the old version described in bug 289277. In an RSS article with a download (I subscribe to a number of podcasts), Akregator shows a link to the enclosure. Clicking on this link opens a new, blank, untitled tab and a popup to download, open with Amarok, etc. Afterwards the tab stays, and it's necessary to close it manually. The blank tab (or tabs) even remain if Akregator is stopped and restarted.
