Hello,
I can confirm that there is a defect with the configuration of Kmail2 in
kontact-24.02.1-kf.236.3.x86_64
(which I have noticed after a move from Qt5 to Qt6 and thus Plasma5 to Plasma6
on GNU/Linux Opensuse Leap + Stable KDE repos.)

I notice a long delay in opening the configuration dialog (like 8 seconds)
then I often get dialogs about to confirm a change in the configuration (which
does not make sense as I did not yet do a change).
Additionally changes are not recorded, as I wanted to make the change that is
shown here: https://wiki.gnupg.org/EMailClients/KMail
and closing the dialogs for good, after I open them again, the change was lost.

Once I've got a crash as well. I raise the priority because and email client
where configuration cannot be done or is lost is hard to impossible to use.

Bug ID: 485308
Summary: Public keys for encryption will be shown as "bad" in
the composer, even if they can be used for encryption
Classification: Applications
   Product: kmail2
   Version: 5.24.2
  Platform: Other
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
 Component: crypto
  Assignee: kdepim-bugs@kde.org
  Reporter: bernh...@intevation.de
  Target Milestone: ---

Created attachment 168332
  --> https://bugs.kde.org/attachment.cgi?id=168332=edit
showing the composer and kleopatra displaying the problem

Recipients that the user wants to encrypt to are shown as red
while the"validity" of a corresponding public key is just "unknown".

This is a regression from a previous version
and inconsistent with the display of the same public key in Kleopatra.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Make sure to have an email address with a public key in GnuPG that is not
fully "valid" for encryption.
   E.g. by calling `LANG=C gpg --locate-external-keys
christoph.klas...@intevation.de` to get the pubkey via WKD,
see something like `pub rsa3072/BA842B59E4A30D2F 2021-09-27 [SC] [expires:
2026-07-30]
  978EE1FDE4F929229B3207CBBA842B59E4A30D2F
uid [ unknown] Christoph Klassen

sub rsa3072/11CD70D4D6223146 2021-09-27 [E] [expires: 2026-07-30]`

2. Open the composer, enter the email address.
3. Select "encrypt"
4. (optional) Send the email, and observe a dialog where you can okay the
pubkey and encryption, showing that this can be done.
5. (optional) click on the icon to open Kleopatra and see that the pubkey has a
validity of unknown.

OBSERVED RESULT
There is an icon shown left to the address that is a red square with a white
cross.
If you click on it, you see Kleopatra where there is a purple square with a
white question mark.
See kontact-24.02.1-pubkey-selection-problem-1.png

EXPECTED RESULT
As in previous versions the icon should be neutral to indicate that encryption
is possible while there is not much trust
that the pubkey belongs to the owner of the email address.
(Ideally a pubkey fetched via WKD should have enough trust to allow encryption
directly, because kmail does not know
(yet?) that the pubkey has been fetched via WKD, it must chose an icon that
stand for both situations, fully unknown and
basic validity.)

True, this problem report and the tracker is suboptimal for the topic.
For while it would have been one of the mailinglists,
but I am not sure about this anymore. KDE e.V. maybe a place to ask about
a good channel.

However it is most helpful to understand that there are many volunteers
that work on KDE's software products. While the whole process may have its
downsides and bad outcomes, any volunteer time and effort is appreciated.

I also find that the regression is a major one. (I've reported this in
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=452264 among other significant usability
problems.).

To add more use cases:
### saving working time shortly before a meeting
 * I have many meetings where the reminder is 15 minutes, so I can prepare.
 * When this is checked I delay up to 2 minutes before the appointment,
 * and then I have the remaining minutes to completely concentrate on something
else until the alarm rings when I get up and walk to the meeting room.
 * This I gain 12-8 minutes of working time.

### using several computers
 * I have at least three computers with Kontact, that all sync their
appontments (using the stone-old Kolab 2 format for historical reasons).
 * When working from home once a week, I have to click away all appointments
that have been there since last starting kontact on this machine.
(This is not a delay use case, but... I mention it because:)

The old kontact/korgac saved the delay in the internal memory and did not sync
it on the machine.

A property what would really improve the situation would be to sync the fire
time of reminders to the servers
and thus also record a potential new delay . So in @Flossy Cat's use case a
delay for 3 days or so would be in the backup
and also working across synced machines.

I am not sure if the current status of the iCalender format - which is often
used nowadays - allows it. It might.

## User Interface
What about if the desktop notifications bring up a special korganizer/kontact
view that holds all fired alarms for appointments, tasks and so on with options
that allow at least what the old overview did and a compact overview? (Just an
idea.)

The use case is:
Robin wants to save an HTML email to a file to open it with their favourite web
browser, either to be more secure or to profit from the credentials saved in
the particular browser.

With an email with a single main Content-type: text/html, there is no way (I
could find) to save this content
as HTML file.

Right now there is no attachment shown in the header and even in the email
structure view there is no context menu (and thus no "save as" entry in the
contect menu). Also the "Save attachments" functionality on the email does not
work as it says: There is no attachment.

How to reproduce:
 * Get hold of an email with only one Content-Type: text/html as main
contents.
 * Display it with Kmail (reproduced with kmail2 5.24.4 (23.08.4))
 * Try right click on the message, "Save Attachments".
-> Observed: does not work with a message: there is no attachment
Expected: Should work and ask for a .html filename.

* Enable email structure view
* right click on the main part
  -> Observed: no context menu
-> expected: context menu that offers working "open" and "save-as" menu
entries beside the common ones

Maybe the label of the option "Automatically encrypt messages when possible" is
suboptimal because it does not mention the checking part (like trying to get
the pubkey in the local storage via WKD or otherwise). Maybe it is an
improvement to say:

"Check if we can encrypt to recipients and enable encryption for an email if
possible for all."

or

"Check if recipients offer to encrypt to them. Suggest to encrypt for an email
automatically if possible".

Both would explain better that there are two steps and that the suggestion can
be ignored, by deselecting the encryption setting later.

One more usability degradation:

### confusing "decline" button

The reminding dialog per appointment remnder offer me a "decline" option (in
German "Ablehnen"). I am unsure what is does. Usually "decline" (and more so
"Ablehnen") for an appointment would mean that I want to refuse to make the
appointment, especially when this is a meeting in the Kalender this would
potentially mean that I inform the others that I will not participate in the
meeting. I guess that this is not what the button does, it probably just
declines being remined of this meeting. However that is not clear from the
presentation of the dialog.

[korganizer] [Bug 452264] Appointment reminder handling reduces usability and functionality between 21.12.3 and 22.03.80

2022-05-06 Thread Bernhard E. Reiter
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=452264

Thanks Volker, for the additional background and explanation.

So far I cannot say how others use the reminder functionality. And one
difficulty of getting closer to this understand is that many important users
will not run "beta" versions or freshly released ones, but are a few years down
the line until their long term distribution will carry a new version. So
feedback coming now will be skewed by this. My suggestion is to at least have
an idea about what is continued to be supported and why.

Personally my use case is in group (1) but I adjust the reminder according to
the preparation time I need for different types of appointments. Then I
sometimes use the delay of reminding me to get another few concentrated
minutes. Example for meetings I invite people I usually have 15 minutes (which
is a reminder they also get), then I can do preparations, like reading the
protocol and agenda, shuffle my papers, open screens. Once I am say the
reminder I may still have 11 minutes left, so I set the reminder to 9 minutes
to be able to dive into another task. If I do not set the second reminder I may
just dive up after 13 minutes, missing the start of the meeting. If I do not
set the first reminder I maynot be prepared. On an appointment at my home I
need to change and drive there, so I put the reminder to 30 minutes. For an
appointment shortly after lunch, I set the reminder to 1 h, so to see it before
lunch break. (This all are examples, but they all are a story about being
reminded, not about task management as far as I understand it.)

My first aim is to understand which uses the old system had (in the wild) and
which of those got lost in the technical transition. I lack the overview to
estimate
if the technical change is an improvement in the summary. All I can do is to
describe
the uses I was missing (on first) sight.

Any my use case was often to have a 15 minutes standard reminder and then
when reacting to to the reminder, to push it back e.g. 2 minutes before the
event.
This was a variable time and it was good I could enter it.

I believe when clicking on the event text (not on the icon) it will send you to
the event in korganizer.

This matches my memory. As you can see, the date is not indicated and if this
was an event taking place yesterday, you may get the wrong impression. (I
cannot say if https://invent.kde.org/pim/akonadi-calendar/-/merge_requests/15

[korganizer] [Bug 452264] New: Appointment reminder handling reduces usability and functionality between 21.12.3 and 22.03.80

2022-04-04 Thread Bernhard E. Reiter
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=452264

Bug ID: 452264
Summary: Appointment reminder handling reduces usability and
functionality between 21.12.3 and 22.03.80
   Product: korganizer
   Version: 5.19.80
  Platform: openSUSE RPMs
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
 Component: reminder daemon (korgac)
  Assignee: kdepim-bugs@kde.org
  Reporter: bernh...@intevation.de
  Target Milestone: ---

SUMMARY
Reminder behaviour changed between kontact 21.12.3 and 22.03.80
Now they do not have a seperate window anymore, but come as part
of the desktop notifications. This reduces functionality and usability.

Reminder behaviour changed between kontact 21.12.3 and 22.03.80
Now they do not have a seperate window anymore, but come as part
of the desktop notifications.

Problems with the new behaviour that the old one did not have:
 * Each reminder does not show the date, so a reminder from a few days ago
look like they are due today.
 * There is no overview anymore of all appointment due since last start
   and in timely order.
 * Lost the functionality to dismiss all reminders at once.
 * When clicking the calendar icon, the Kontact calendar does not open.
(Needs to click the text itself to open the calendar.)

Observed the change after the switch from the following version
on an OpenSuse Leap system:

2022-03-05
10:14:39|install|kontact|21.12.3-lp153.178.1|x86_64||KDE-Applications|c862e0234bdd0804f08590d9ba921804c3d87307b0cfb745220f0ed19c18bf86|

2022-04-01
22:06:01|install|kontact|22.03.80-lp153.179.1|x86_64||KDE-Applications|a76922e914e46311d47fb104d28c8d731d9c7e781c1ff65ec98fc340af9975a0|

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. create a number appointments (with old kontact in my case)
2. wait until they were due, e.g. a few days
3. start system (with implicit starting akonadi)

OBSERVED RESULT
You get all past due reminders, each in its own little notification windows.
The window does not show the date, so reminder from two days ago looks like it
is taking place now.
There is no button to dismiss all reminders.
There is no overview of all reminders, if they do not fit in some are just not
shown.

EXPECTED RESULT
The usability for overview and handling should be preserved or superceded.
(If there is a possibility to configure the system to behave similiar or
better, it should be the default.)
Each reminder should display the data and make clear it is not today, when it
isn't.

Clicking the calendar should open the kontact calendar app (or whatever did the
reminding entry).

I can confirm the problem with Kleopatra 2.3.0-gpg4win-3.0.0-beta276.

How to reproduce:
* Start OpenPGP keypair creation.
* Use advanced options to set an expiration date far in the future, e.g. 2080
-> General error.

The included gpg 2.1.22 can create such a key pair, but only after confirmation
and will display -??-?? as expiration data.

@Denis,
of course I appreciate your work in KDE and the issue tracker in particular,
cleaning up is very important!

I did ask, because your short comment did not explain the situation for me. My
suggestion would be that you should link a more official statement. Your last
statement reads like "4.14 KDEPIM" would be unmaintained. If this would be
really the case I think we should notify all distributions about it. Getting
4.14 from Ubuntu, Debian or OpenSuse or any other GNU/Linux distribution is
then just a security risk. So my hope is that the policy is different.

[kleopatra] [Bug 363309] certificates signed through marginal trusted certificates are incorrectly displayed

--- Comment #2 from Bernhard E. Reiter <bernh...@intevation.de> ---
Hi Andre,
to me this is a clear defect in the current gui.

The gui aims to be for power users (aka Bob and Annika in
https://wiki.gnupg.org/EasyGpg2016/VisionAndStories ).
And the GUI claims to help you manage the Web of Trust,
which some power users still want to do.

In the Web of Trust (and some other trust context) a trusted certificate comes
with a strong indication that it belongs to the userid and is a base for
trusting other certificates.
A certificate that is marginally trusted should not fall in this category,
at least it is missleading. The certificate in questions falls in the category
"some trust"
and when in doubt this meant: not enough trust.

If a user starts to understand the WoT implementation of GnuPG, she will
be surprised by the different behaviour of the kleopatra display and the GnuPG
backend.

If there is an easy fix, it probably should also be done on older product lines
as long
as they are still in usage.

Best,
Bernhard

[kmail2] [Bug 361368] New: option to delete multipart/alternative attachments missing, e.g. text/html

2016-04-04 Thread Bernhard E . Reiter via KDE Bugzilla
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=361368

Bug ID: 361368
Summary: option to delete multipart/alternative attachments
missing, e.g. text/html
   Product: kmail2
   Version: 4.14.10
  Platform: openSUSE RPMs
OS: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
 Component: commands and actions
  Assignee: kdepim-bugs@kde.org
  Reporter: bernh...@intevation.de

In Kontact Mail 3.5 it was possible to delete the
text/html alternative attachments in multipart/alternative emails.
For example by using the context menu in the view that show the email structure
on the text/html alternative and choose "delete attachment".
Kontact Mail 4.14.10 misses this function.
Because it is a functional degration without catering the use case differently
I consider it a bug.

Use case:
Often the size of the text/html alternative part is very large compared to the
text/plain part
that contains all information. The reader of the email wants to keep a record
of the email
in a space saving way.

Scenarios that illustrate the use case:
There is a quota on the email folders when using imap.
Some emails may be required to be kept for archival purposes by tax law.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. look at an html email that is send as multipart/alternative
2. try to delete the text/html branch including the image attachments.

Actual Results:
Found no way to do it.

Hi,
the option to delete all attachment is still missing in 4.14.10 desktop version
of Kontact Mail.

My use case is:
The reader wants to record in a space saving way that the email correspondence
has happened after the many attachments of an email has been used (saved).

Personally I would expect this option in the context menus of the attachments
in the header and the mail structure view.

Version: 1.7.50.20120604.gitdeec1f8deec1f-1maemo6.3

it turned out this was a problem related to the filesystem.
I have synced a rather large account and thus I've moved the akonadi data store
too the MyDocs partition which is vfat and larger as outlined in
http://userbase.kde.org/Kontact_Touch/Harmattan#Additional_Notes

While there is still space on the partition the error message by akonadi is:
Insert: payload file /home/user/.local/share//akonadi/file_db_data/141229_r0
could not be open for writing! Error: No space left on device

Turns out there are already a large number of files in that directory:
ls|wc
32764
and there is a limit
~/MyDocs/akonadi/file_db_data $ touch x
touch: x: No space left on device

So the workaround seems to be that I need to tune akonadi to create less
files in that directory. Which would have been okay. if the error message would
have reached me as a user.

So I am refocussing this issuse towards:
Problem description: A filesystem problem (cannot create new files) must be
reported to the user by the frontend.
Current behaviour: A sync hang which is not recoverable.
Rationale: The effects of the defect are severe, as the client get unusable.
Filesystem issues can appear under normal usage and the user may be able to
recover from the situation by other means if informed. E.g. the user may be
able to remove some folders within Kontact or make space on the used filesystem
by other means.

Meanwhile I also observed a similiar hang on a WLAN connection.
So it does not depend on the mobile (UTMS / GPRS) connection status
and I've broadened the subject.

Andre, maybe the akonadi-server version does make a difference, at least
the NEWS file of 1.6.90 lists something about - Update agent interface to
include collectionTreeSynchronized signal. and I'm not sure if 1.6.50 has this
already or if it is related at all.

[Bug 300819] New: Sync hangs during mobile connection (gprs or UTMS) on N9 does not recover with offline - online

2012-05-29 Thread Bernhard E . Reiter
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=300819

Bug ID: 300819
  Severity: major
   Version: unspecified
  Priority: NOR
  Assignee: kdepim-bugs@kde.org
Summary: Sync hangs during mobile connection (gprs or UTMS) on
N9 does not recover with offline - online
Classification: Unclassified
OS: Linux
  Reporter: bernh...@intevation.de
  Hardware: Meego/Harmattan
Status: NEW
 Component: general
   Product: KDE PIM Mobile

When online with the GPRS or UTMS connection, folder syncs
very soon hang, so they stay at a random percentange and don't move anymore.
This situation occurs for all syncs in larger folders, when using the mobile
connection.
It does not occur with the WLAN connection.

Switching to offline and then to online again usually changes the sync
percentage
to something lower and hangs there. Closing the Kontact Touch Mail frontend
and reopening it does not help.

Version installed:
ii kmail-mobile
4:4.9~.20120521.git084e17ba-1maemo6.6
ii kdepimlibs-kio-plugins
4:4.9~20120521.git9360eadef-maemo6.6
ii kdepim-runtime
4:4.8+20120521.git8ce8c5b0-1maemo6.2
ii akonadi-server
1.6.50.20120516.gitdeec1f-1maemo6.2

I've also notived the issue with previous revision.
When using the same N9 and its internet connection via an ideapad with Kontact
Touch,
there is no hang.

So maybe the N9 does something special when it is using the mobile internet
connection?

--- Comment #6 from Bernhard E. Reiter bernhard intevation de 2011-08-25

Stephan, I believe this was a defect that was within the codebase last year,
especially during an intensive time of development. This has been fixed in the
codebase for long. Most problems with sending email now will be much more
specific. I try to adapt the title better so that this report is not found as
often.

For you I recommend to first report the issue to your GNU distribution and
packagers to exclude problems there. Once packaging and setup issues are rules
out, a report here in a new issue is really appreciated!

Thanks,
Bernhard

I think it does deserve major severity because it makes

Being so slow that users refrain from using it, would in my view qualify

the several threads for one verification problem.
It still hangs, reports Tobias, so we need a GPGME_DEBUG 9 log

For reference here is a level 9 gpgme debug log (as Werner asked for).
How to create it:
On the command line of the N900:

  export GPGME_DEBUG=9:/home/user/20110311-gpgme-4.txt

on a second shell you can enter several markers into the log file

[Bug 268138] New: Crypto operations like verify and decrypt hang in the mail frontend after a few operations, cpu intensive

2011-03-10 Thread Bernhard E . Reiter
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=268138

Summary: Crypto operations like verify and decrypt hang in the
mail frontend after a few operations, cpu intensive
   Product: KMail Mobile
   Version: unspecified
  Platform: Maemo 5
OS/Version: Linux
Status: NEW
  Keywords: komo3
  Severity: major
  Priority: NOR
 Component: general
AssignedTo: kdepim-bugs@kde.org
ReportedBy: bernh...@intevation.de

I can reproduce on the N900 and the HTC Touch Pro2,
that after a few crypto operations, the crypto thread of kmail-mobile
seems to hang.

Symptoms:
No other crypto operations completes in Kontact Touch Mail.
Can still operate and switch to other email otherwise.
Can do crypto operations on the command line.
No dirmngr and no gpgsm running.
gpg-connect-agent gets prompt from the gpg-agent.
kontact-mobile getting all available CPU seen on top.

How to reproduce:
E.g send yourself three emails: Signed only, signed and encrypted, encrypted
only.
Switch between all those emails back and forth.
After doing this up a few times (usually three times is enough),
the symptoms occur.

Added a testscript for this here:
http://kolab.org/cgi-bin/viewcvs-kolab.cgi/utils/testing/test-send-invitations-timezone.py

Results:
test1) invalid VCALENDER with TZID=Europe/Berlin, but missing the corresponding
VTIMEZONE:
OL 2003 cannot, it will display the event at the wrong time, assuming UTC
without further notice. This ss a stricter rfc interpretation then OL 2007.
OL 2007 can deal with it. Thus it interprets the name. (No idea how
many names it knows, though.)

test2 and test3) with TZID and good VTIMEZONE info (created by Kontact Touch
N900 4:4.6~.20110211.1251.git9d81e94-1maemo1.1219908 carrige returns fixed
manually)
Both OL 2003 and OL 2007 can deal with it.
One test included a repeated appointment accross one sometime change.

test4) Repeating appointment in UTC (created by Kontact Touch CE being at the
same time)
OL 2003 will display and calculate it from the first appointment and adjust
for the sommertime shift. So Kontact Touch and CE are displaying the same.
OL 2007 will behave stricter towards the RFC and warn the user in the
appointment that it repeats in GMT+0 having no timezone, displaying the GMT
time! When accepting the appointments they are at the right time in UTC shown
at two different times in Berlin/Europe.

test5 test6) Both OL 2003 and OL 2007 can display single UTC events.

Lifetime of tested Outlook versions (inquired at
http://support.microsoft.com/gp/lifeselectindex, can be longer according
to http://support.microsoft.com/gp/lifepolicy)
Outlook 2003 mainstream support ended 2009, extended support until Aug 2014
Outlook 2007 mainstream support until April 2012, extended s until April 2017

Conclusion:
To be compatible with both versions of Outlook tested
for recurrent events, we would need to send
a proper VTIMEZONE with use of the TZID.
It is okay to send VTIMEZONE with the use of TZID for singe instance events.

@Tokoe:
We did _not_ establish that Kontact Desktop e35 or Outlook is not correct.
Uncorrect is the behaviour of Kontact Touch to use a TZID which is
not defined properly as VTIMEZONE. (See my comment #14.)

Re Comment #15:
I have to correct myself about Outlook 2007 behaviour: My test was not
conclusive, as floating time and correct time were the same. It could be
that Outlook 2007 correctly interpets the TZID without VTIMEZONE as floating
time.

Note that as far as I have understood Kontact Touch on MS CE cannot create
VTIMEZONE entries. If this is the case only Kontact Touch on CE must use
UTC and we still have to decide about what other versions should do.
If Outlook behaviour with TZID and VTIMEZONE is correct, then all versions
of Kontact (that can) should create it, I'd say.

According to #16 Kontact Touch still does not use UTC for recurrences.
If so, code should be changed IMO to use UTC for recurrances on CE only.

[o] Correct behaviour in this comment means according to (my interpretation)
of http://www.rfc-editor.org/rfc/rfc5545.txt(correctly according to RFC

Interesting enough:
Outlook 2007 (12.0.6423.1000) SP2 MSO (12.0.6425.1000) on Windows Vista
(both German) did correctly display an appointment with no VTIMEZONE,
but:
  DTSTART;TZID=Europe/Berlin:20110211T155900
  DTEND;TZID=Europe/Berlin:20110211T175900

So the behavior is different for OL 2003 and OL 2007. :/
The behaviour seems not matching the standard:
http://www.rfc-editor.org/rfc/rfc5545.txt,
which has a possiblity for a global TZ databse in the future
but indicated with a leading '/'

--- Comment #1 from Bernhard E. Reiter bernhard intevation de 2011-01-31

When I am an attendee, I should not change the appointment, only the organizer
should do this and then send an update. If I still want to change it, I need to
get asked if I want to become the organizer.

Changing my acceptance status later should not lead to change of the
appointment itself, but to an email from myself to the organizer (and nobody
else).

Bad behaviour in this version was that the email did not go the the organizer,
but to the other attendees.

David, I wasn't sure, because it is strange that gpg gives output that gpg2
does not. I believe this is where we need to check what the issue is.

Try gpg2 -vvv --list-secret-keys and gpg2 -vvv --debug-all
--list-secret-keys.
Also check the permission on all in .gnupg, should not be root.
You may ping me if we are both online for interactive debugging.

+++ This bug was initially created as a clone of Bug #258676 +++

version: 20101203.1203110-1maemo1
Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Send a mail to the test account (subject: Devil)
2. Look if the mail in the inbox.
3. Actions/Mail/Search for Mails
4. Enter Devil in the textfield and activate subject.
5. Search

Same can be done for events.
Retested with windows-ce/Kontact-Mobile/testing/2011-01-17-02-23/

Objects are found now, but for a while the search dialog claims
that 0 objects are found. There should be a indicator that the search
is not yet completed, so that users are not irritated if the search
takes a while until the objects are found.
