[korganizer] [Bug 461953] New: Sometimes Wrong Event Time is Shown in kOrganizer's Scheduling View

2022-11-17 Thread Gunter Ohrner
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=461953

Bug ID: 461953
Summary: Sometimes Wrong Event Time is Shown in kOrganizer's
Scheduling View
Classification: Applications
   Product: korganizer
   Version: 5.21.3
  Platform: Neon
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
 Component: agendaview (weekview)
  Assignee: kdepim-bugs@kde.org
  Reporter: kdeb...@customcdrom.de
  Target Milestone: ---

Created attachment 153840
  --> https://bugs.kde.org/attachment.cgi?id=153840=edit
The middle event shows the issue.

SUMMARY

Sometimes, kOrganizer's scheduling view (day/week view) shows the wrong times
for events in the calendar. See the attached screenshot for reference - it
shows the 12'o clock (noon) slot.

OBSERVED RESULT
* One event in the 12 'o clock slot states "13:00 - 13:30" instead of "12:00 -
12:30".

EXPECTED RESULT
* The event should show "12:00 - 12:30" as it does in the NextCloud online
calendar view or in Mozilla Lighting.

I'm in CET time zone. The affected event was scheduled in IST Indian Standard
Time zone Asia/Kolkata, 16:30 - 17:00 in this time zone.

What's interesting is that it's actually shown in the correct location, just
the labels are wrong - which can lead to missed appointments if there are no
other appointments nearby which help to detect the error.

Thanks, this workaround also seemst to work for me in KMail Version 5.21.3
(22.08.3).

However the info text below these boxes explicitly warns against changing them
manually, so I hope I don't cause and further trouble down the road by this
change.

In any case, it's necessary because an Inbox from where you cannot delete
anything, and cannot move any message out of it just plain unusable... :-(

This latter case is especially inconvenient in case of forwarding another
message as an attachment. The new forwarding message will always get the
signature of the default identity, and switching to the correct / desired
identity will then not update the signature.

I can still confirm the bug.

The popup menu on "drop" only shows "move message" now, it does not offer to
copy it (which makes even less sense), but still the operation silently fails.

Dragging attachments (images or PDFs) to mail folder from the mails structure
view yields a popup saying "Copy here", but of course this also does not work.
Dragging whole attached messages from the "structure view" is not possible
("forbidden" mouse cursor).

It still does not work:

* Dragging an image from Chrome into the text editor does nothing. The mouse
cursor indicates that the image can be dropped ("plus" symbol), but this does
not work.
* Pasting the URL meanwhile only adds the URL, the popup mentioned on the
original report does not seem to exist any more. This may not be a bug, but
just a change in behaviour.
* Copy-Pasting the image from Chrome into the editor does not add the actual
image, just a tiny "paper sheet" icon - no idea what's that supposed to mean,
but pasting the image does not work.

Appointments on a day in month view are not shown in the order in which they

The affected appointments are defined in a different time zone, but sorting
should be in the effective appointment order.

The shown local times are correct, but an appointment occuring at 10:30 local
time should NOT be displayed AFTER appointments occuring at e.g. 14:00 local
time.

2020-12-17 Thread Gunter Ohrner
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=340014

I'm not using kMail any more since a few years, as it was just too unreliable.

More than once I had the problem that I suddenly ended up with a non-working
email program after upgrades to a KDE bugfix or next stable release due to some
obscure Akonadi and other problems.

However, as far as I remember, the feature "File->New->Main Window" was removed
from kMail alltogether to "fix" other issues the occured in relation to
multiple main windows. As I was used to work with those before, it was quite a
set-back back then.

So maybe the original issue here is not relevant any more at all, although I
don't know about the issues Dennis mentioned in Comment 10 in 2017 - so not
sure if this could be closed as "worksforme" or whatever...

[Akonadi] [Bug 338571] Performance Regression: Folder synchronisation in Akonadi 16.08 (actually in any release, starting with KDE 4.14) very slow, compared to kMail from KDE 4.13.x

> Gunter, sorry for spelling your name wrong.

No problem Martin, and thanks for even noticing it! ;)

However, unfortunately I don't think I can be of much help regarding this or
similar bugs at the moment.

I'm using KDE Neon, and I abandoned kMail quite some time ago when - besides
the very bad performance - kMail itself or Akonadi (cannot remember exactly)
completely broke for me once again after some update. Unfortunately, it was no
rare event to run "apt-get upgrade" on Neon - which you also need to do to get
security and maintenance updates - just to find out that you didn't have a
working mail client any more...)

I also increasingly needed to work with CalDAV and team events, which didn't
work at all reliably with kOrganizer.

As I couldn't work this way, I switched to Thunderbird, even though I actually
liked kMails interface and feature set (if it would work as expected...) better
than Thunderbird's. I just was no longer willing to repeatedly have to invest
hours of work just to be able to continue reading and writing mails after
bugfix and maintenance updates to the OS...

Until I abandoned it, performance didn't get any better, though. (I'm not sure
when I switched to Thunderbird, but according to my kMail bug reports I used
several 5.x versions, at least up to 5.8 and possibly later releases.

2018-10-03 Thread Gunter Ohrner
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=367860

Unfortunately, I gave up using kOrganizer for managing my calendar as it was
barely usable due to the amount of bugs and it regularly caused me to miss
appointments or somehow mess up specific calendar events beyond repair.

Thus I currently cannot help with those issues any more. From my point of view,
event/appointment management would need a systematic review instead of
"peephole fixes" driven by individual bug reports.

But of course I know KDE PIM has a developer shortage and most (all?) devs are
working on the applications in their spare time, so I understand why this is
not likely to happen.

The invitation stuff is rather complex with lots of different cases which need
to be treated correctly, so automatic testing of a set of systematically
created test cases would be really necessary. That's a lot of work of course,
though... :-/

   Product: kmail2
   Version: 5.9.0
  Platform: Neon Packages

  Assignee: kdepim-bugs@kde.org

I just updated from kMail 5.8.x to 5.9.0 and kMail now suddenly pops up a
confirmation dialog asking if I really want to delete a message whenever I
press Ctrl-Del in the message list.

Is there any way to disable it, it could not find any setting in the
application properties to disable this dialog, and the dialog itself also does
not offer a "Never Ask Again" option.

My usual workflow is to select a mail in the message list, quickly scan its
preview and then delete it for good if it's not relevant. I receive many mails
which I just have to check and which I then can dismiss immediately after, so
it's really important for convenience that I'm *not* forced to confirm some
kind of dialog for every single mail I want to get rid of...

Good catch! I was literally trying for hours to find a pattern. (Ok, most of
the time got wasted while dealing with disk-full problems thanks to
byzanz-record - to record a proof as GIF screencast - filling /tmp/ in no time
by default... ;)

I also can reproduce it using this pattern. Possibly it was what I was doing
all the time.

During my tests and using Wireshark I definitely saw kMail doing network
accesses without any prior confirmation for the rendered email.

https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=394554

--- Comment #14 from Gunter Ohrner <kdeb...@customcdrom.de> ---
Ok, it really gets somewhat strange now:

* I got an HTML mail (again some GDPR notification from a company) and kMail
rendered the externally referenced logo immediately after activating HTML
rendering.
* Afterwards I closed kMail, reopened it and reopened the mail again - now
kMail correctly asked if external references shall really be displayed, as
expected.

I need to do further tests, but could it be possible that "something else"
already accesses and fetches the image before the mail is actually displayed,
such that the image is cached when kMail finally is asked to render it and an
additional network access is not necessary any more?

In this case the security issue would be somewhere else.

Today, kMail correctly asks if I really want to load external references if I
try to open this mail.

I don't really understand this, but looks as if I need to do some further
research... :-/

That's probably the same thing I referred to in:

However, with the example message I attached, I was never asked. The image was
displayed immediately when opening the message for the first time and chosing
"render HTML".

I'll check if it does network access in this case, but I would not know where
else it would get the image from.

Message with which I can reproduce the behaviour.

kMail will show the image referenced in the attached message file as soon as
"render HTML content" is activated.

None of the used mail addresses is contained in my address book.

However, I also encountered HTML mails - in the same folder - for which I'm
asked if I want to allow loading of external references.

After confirming this once, it seems to be remembered by kMail for this message
and I do not have to confirm it on subsequent displays.

Bug ID: 394554
Summary: Regression: kMail 5.8.1 Information Leak: kMail loads
external references in HTML mails without asking
   Product: kmail2
   Version: 5.8.0
  Platform: Neon Packages
OS: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
 Component: UI
  Assignee: kdepim-bugs@kde.org
  Reporter: kdeb...@customcdrom.de
  Target Milestone: ---

kMail 5.8.1 seems to load external references in HTML emails without asking,
possibly disclosing to a third party (company / spammer / scammer) that the
mail has been displayed.

I configured kMail to prefer plain text messages and not to load any external
references. (The current Efail debate shows the validity of those measures.)

After clicking "activate formatted HTML display", older kMail versions (until
recently) would roughly format the message but display a second question "load
external references" which had to be confirmed explicitly.

If I click "activate formatted HTML display" in kMail 5.8.1, all external
images for example seem to be loaded immediately, possibly disclosing
information about validity / reachability of my email address to adverse third
parties.

Expected behaviour: If "load external references" is unchecked in the options,
no external references (CSS styles, images, anything else) is loaded until I
explicitly confirm that I actually want to do so.

It's important that "render HTML" and "load external references" is split into
two separate steps, as lots of HTML mails do not have any proper plain text
content embedded, so I sometimes have to resort to the renderen HTML contents
to even decide if the mail is legit (or I want to trust it fully) or not. This
gets close to impossible if activating HTML rendering will automatically load
all stuff it references from the internet, including activating counter pixels
or submitting tracking ID information by specifically crafted HTTP GET
requests.

Additionally, externally referenced file types may be loaded which I really do
not want to be downloaded like PDF or even some script or executable files.

Screenshot showing popup menu with a simple option to switch to list view - I
could not find a similar way back after selecting this entry.

If I didn't miss any obvious option, it's very easy to switch the "preferred
folders" area from icon view to list view by just right-clicking the area and
chosing the appropriate option.

However, once list view is activated, it does not have a general "preferred
folder area" right-click popup-menu any more, only the list entries have
specific popup menus which (obviously) do not offer any functionality which
works on the whole area.

So the only option I found to get back was to open the kMail settings dialog
and search for the corresponding option buried in some of the settins tabs.

This is not obvious and in any case very asymmetric behaviour. If I try such an
option, I expect to get back again to the previous state just as easily...

How can I find out who or what is triggering all those (slow) queries?

Screenshot Akonadiconsole Query Sequence Debugger

The query debugger query sequence view "nicely" illustrates the problem:
The second query is very slow with 650 ms execution time per call, and uses
most of the processing time.

The sum shown as "TOTAL" basically resembles wall clock time, as Akonadi loads
the CPU 100% (actually mysqld).

This never seems to finish, at least it ran for lots of hours several times,
before I finally terminated it using "akonadictl stop".

Update: Akonadi is really keeping mysqld at 100%, all the time, all day,
independently of if I quit kmail or not. I need to stop akonadiserver
(akonadictl stop) to make it stop after a while.

So maybe this needs to be reassigned to akonadi? It renders all akonadi using
software more or less unusable, including kaddressbook...

Bug ID: 384359
Summary: Regression in 5.6.0 / 17.08 compared to 17.04.3: MySQL
load always 100%, constant queries, extremely
sluggisch behaviour
   Product: kmail2
   Version: 5.6.0
  Platform: Other
OS: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
 Component: general
  Assignee: kdepim-bugs@kde.org
  Reporter: kdeb...@customcdrom.de
  Target Milestone: ---

Since todays update, which pulled in KDE PIM 17.08, kMail really became
unusable.

I'm using a normal IMAP resource with a locally running Dovecot IMAP server
process.

Akonadi permanently executes quries as the following:

SELECT count(DISTINCT PimItemTable.id), sum(PimItemTable.size), sum(CASE WHEN (
SeenFlags.Flag_id IS NOT NULL OR IgnoredFlags.Flag_id IS NOT NULL ) THEN 1 ELSE
0 END) FROM PimItemTable LEFT JOIN PimItemFlagRelation AS SeenFlags ON (
PimItemTable.id = SeenFlags.PimItem_id AND SeenFlags.Flag_id = ? ) LEFT JOIN
PimItemFlagRelation AS IgnoredFlags ON ( PimItemTable.id =
IgnoredFlags.PimItem_id AND IgnoredFlags.Flag_id = ? ) INNER JOIN
CollectionPimItemRelation ON ( CollectionPimItemRelation.PimItem_id =
PimItemTable.id ) WHERE ( CollectionPimItemRelation.Collection_id = ? )

constantly loads the disk (Samsung 840 EVO SSD), lets the mysqld process eat
100% CPU (with the corresponding power consumption and fan noises...) and
reacts very, very slowly in general. (E.g. moving messages takes several 10
minutes, opening folders often also does.)

kMail/Aknoadi already had severe performance problems before, which made
working with it a trial of patience (See bug 338571, bug 352604), but this is
an all-new quality now... (And also a new bug, as contrary to the other ones
the background activity is not directly visible/represented in the UI - except
by it not being responsive.)

Isn't there a way for the applications to fetch missing icons from some kind of
fallback default style?

It's probably an unrealistic task for any but the default style to ship all
required icons for each and every possible application - what about third party
applications building on top of KDE Frameworks but not being part of the
official KDE SC?

No, I hadn't.

You already told me about this dependency concerning the kAddressbook problems
I had, and after installing it it also fixed the issues I had with kMail.

I just forgot to close this bug.

However, it's not really obvious to the user that kdepim-addons will provide
such features - maybe it would somehow be possible to point a user to it in
future versions. I.e. in the empty kAddressbook menu entries "Action" etc. add
an empty disabled menuentry "Install Addons for additional features" or
similar... Similar with kMail Message Themes/Styles etc... But that's now a
wishlist item...

Behaviour seems to have changed a bit.

Events seem to be imported correctly.

What I noticed is that an event sent from the calendar using right-click ->
"Send as iCalendar" is sent with start/end times converted to UTC instead of
being sent in the specified time zone.

This way, at least timezone information is lost.

I'd also expect some possibly unwanted side-effects in regard to DST, but
didn't try this in more detail.

Since upgrading from kMail from Applications 16.12.3 to 17.04.0, moving
messages from the inbox to another folder using drag and drop does not work on
the first try after starting kMail for the first time in a session - at least
that's what appear to be the conditions...

kMail 5.5.1 with a normal IMAP account and a locally running IMAP server
(dovecot).

Try the following:

* Log in
* Start kMail
* Select unread messages in the Inbox, which will get marked as read
automatically by this process (I configured kMail this way)
* Drag the messages to another folder, select "Move" from the context menu

What should happen:

The moved messages should disappear from the inbox and reappear in the
destination folder.

What actually happens:

The messages appear in the destination folder, but are still visible in the
Inbox (source folder). However, the messages also have not really been copied,
as if you quite kmail and start it again, the messages will suddenly be gone
from the inbox.

So this somehow looks like a UI update problem.

1) Attach a file to a message.
2) Right-click the attachment, choose Properties and change the attachment's

Result: The "Content-Type" "name" attribute is changed, as follows:

Content-Type: application/pdf; name="new_name.pdf"

The "Content-Disposition" "filename" attribute stays unchanged, though:

Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="orig_name.pdf"

Somewhat counter-intuitive, this will in most cases cause the attachment to be
called "orig_name.pdf" on the receiver's side, not "new_name.pdf" as one might
expect when using the properties dialog.

By default, the name and filename attributes are set to the same values by
kMail, as far as I can see.

Either the "name" field should change both values, or there should be a
separate "File Name" property.

Maybe interesting in this regard:

Created attachment 104405

Attachment showing kmail window in the state where the described behaviour can
be observed.

This still happens although #368743 is supposed to be fixed:

Whenever one of kMails frequent and lengthy folder synchronisations takes
place, the focus is always stolen from the quick search bar after switching to
a new folder.

To reproduce (also refer to screenshot):

* The account "Lokal" refers to an IMAP account on a locally running
  IMAP server in my case.

* Click at a folder which requires a while to synchronize. The Sent folder
might a good idea, mine always takes about 2 minutes to synchronize whenever
  I open it.

* Click any mail in this folder such that the "please wait" message you can see
  in the screenshot appear.

* Now select another folder and click into the quick search bar.

What now happens is that after a delay of about 1 or 2 seconds, the "please
wait" message will redraw, at which point the focus will be stolen from the
quick search bar.

Any search text currently being entered at this moment will be interpreted as
hotkey presses, causing chaos... ;)

As this happens all the time, this is pretty annoying.

If this can't be fixed, the quick search bar at least should be disabled for
the period during folder switching while it actually cannot be used.

kMail does not escape the "Sender" headers contents properly before
interpreting the mail text as HTML.

This issue basically is the same as Bug 361173 (Disposition-Notification-To not
correctly escaped in message viewer), just with a different header - maybe the
same problem still lingers for other headers as well?

Here follows an excerpt of a message's "view source / HTML" view:

-------

 Sender:
 Gunter Ohrner
<senderaddr...@example.com>

---

The original "Sender" header contained "Gunter Ohrner
<senderaddr...@example.com>" and the brackets should have been escaped instead
of being interpreted as HTML tags...

Also, for other headers which may contain mail addresses, those addresses are
converted to links by kMail, which would also be a good idea for "Sender"
header. (I think this is not done for the "Disposition-Notification-To" after
the fix, for whatever reason?)

Since about kMail 5.4.2 or 5.4.1, iCal invitations sent by other calendar
applications are displayed as raw inline text or attachments only.

kMail 5.4.0 and earlier displayed an invitation info message with clickable
links to accept or decline the inviation, or whatever. This is gone now.

This is a major regression, as due to kOrganizer bug #352214 it's even not
possible to import the invitation manually in a way which is actually usable...

Or maybe this is caused by a KDE Neon packaging problem?

[kmail2] [Bug 376388] Regression kMail 5.4.2: "Shift-Delete" hotkey does not work as expected any more, while "Strg-A" does not work as advertised in the Edit menu

--- Comment #1 from Gunter Ohrner <kdeb...@customcdrom.de> ---
Mh, the problem behaves slightly different than I first thought:

The focus gets removed from the message list after just clicking the message
for the first time. The focus is then transfered to the message content pane.

Hotkeys for message navigation still work as expected.

Yet at least two hotkeys I tested stopped working now:

* Shift-Delete: It only works if the message has the focus in the message list.
If the message content pane is focused, this hotkey does nothing.

Curiously, pressing just "Delete" (move to trash) works in both cases.

Maybe the Shift-Delete hotkey just needs to be activated if the message
content pane, in addition to the message list?

Then I'd be happy, as far as I can tell at the moment. ;)

* Another hotkey which does not work any longer as advertised is Ctrl-A.

In the Edit menu, it explicitly states that it will select all messages in
  the message list.

What it now actually does is selecting the message's text.

Actually, for my usage behaviour this is an improvement, as I already pressed
Ctrl-A in the past several times, implicitly expecting the message text to be
selected, and always was slightly surprised all messages in the list got
  selected instead.

Maybe you should assign a new hotkey to "Select all messages in list" and
leave Ctrl-A to mean "select everything in the currently focused window area"
  as it is now?

My use case for removing unwanted mail in folder was to jump to other mails
using the "->" button or "+"/"n" keys and pressing Shift-Delete to remove them
for good if I do not want to keep them.

This still worked fine since ages until kMail 5.4.1 but not any more with
5.4.2:

After navigating to another message using "+", "n" or by clicking a folder, the
next message is highlighted in the message list but does not get keyboard focus
- any additional hotkey pressed at this point does not work on this message.

You have to explicitly click the message again with the mouse to make
Shift-Delete work, after which the keyboard focus gets lost again, so I even
cannot delete subsequent mails using the keyboard IF I explicitly clicked into
the message list.

This is pretty annoying as if I want to delete 10 mails in a folder one after
another and have a quick glance at their contents before doing so, this
previously just required pressing "Shift-Delete" ten times and looking at the
message content pane in between. Since the last update, it requires 10
additional changes between keyboard and mouse and ten additional mouse
clicks... :-(

@Laurent: Sorry for the late reply. As kMail did not work for me any more with
this bug, I had to switch to Thunderbird for the meantime - and I did not
notice that I had not subscribed to the IMAP folder where my KDE Bugzilla
notifications end up, so I missed your question... :-(

(I configured kMail to show all folders regardless of subscription state.)

So that I've now seen your question (and tons of others) is an indication that
it's working for me again since yesterdays update. :)

Interestingly, KDE PIM Runtime which contains the mail agent was not changed
during this update, but Akonadi was upgraded to
4:16.12.0+p16.04+git20170104.0343-0 (KDE Neon package).

So if this fix was contained therein, it helps. If it wasn't, the issue was
caused by something else.
