I will add a warning for when NetworkManager is not found when compiling kde-runtime. Networkstatus is in kde-runtime, not kde-workspace. What is in kde-workspace are the Solid backends for NetworkManager, ModemManager and Wicd. > Perhaps you're confusing with kde-workspace? NetworkManager is a dependence > of kde-workspace. https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=294441 --- Comment #49 from Lamarque V. Souza --- Ok, we figured out what is wrong here: . ntrack and wicd support are already enabled. So I was wrong in comment #46. . NetworkManager support is only compiled in if NetworkManager's headers are installed and that is probably the Arch's problem. According to this http://projects.archlinux.org/svntogit/packages.git/tree/trunk/PKGBUILD?h=packages/kdebase you are compiling kde programs without NetworkManager support. Because of that ony ntrack support is functional and since ntrack has this bug that never sends the online signal the system is set to offline for ever. . all KDE programs (or at least they should) treat system as online in unknown state, so if you set ntrack state to 0 (unknown) the programs start to work. . Since Wicd backend is always enabled the Wicd status overrides the ntrack status and everything works. So, please compile kde-runtime with NetworkManager support and everything should work even with ntrack support enabled. You can re-enable ntrack support once they fix their problem. I just do not know how to close this bug, it's both upstream (ntrack) and downstream (Arch) :-) -- You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug. ___ Kdepim-bugs mailing list Kdepim-bugs@kde.org https://mail.kde.org/mailman/listinfo/kdepim-bugs

https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=294441 --- Comment #46 from Lamarque V. Souza --- (In reply to comment #45) > Please users keep the ArchLinux comments in our bugtracker; this is the KDE > bug tracker. Since this problem happens only with Arch users and not users from other distributions that also use NTrack I am inclined to think that there is a problem in the NTrack version you use (0.16) when other distributions use 0.15. On the other hand networkstatus should have never activated ntrack support if NetworkManager or Wicd is running. But ntrack should not have set system as offline too. There seems to be more than one problem here. Does ArchLinux use systemd? > This issue has been "fixed" on arch removing the QNtrack support in > kde-runtime, but it HAS NOT been fixed in KDE/Ntrack code. So this still is > a KDE bug or a ntrack bug. https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=294441 --- Comment #39 from Lamarque V. Souza --- (In reply to comment #37) > Hi all, I cannot reproduce this in Arch. This was an issue with 4.8.0, but > got fixed with the update to 4.8.1. Hmmm then maybe my commit d0ce3b783382016a0b6049a78066a5fdb089043b to kde-runtime-4.8.1 fixed this issue. NetworkManager emits the StatusChanged signal but network is not really accessible for a couple of seconds. My commit adds a 2s delay before networkstatus relays the StatusChanged signal to all other KDE programs. Maybe I need to increase the delay I contact NetworkManager developers to ony emit StatusChanged when network is really online. > Anyway, if Lamarque suggests to disable Ntrack from kde-runtime, I'll drop > it. Now I am not sure if ntrack is the culprit here, Kubuntu also enables NTrack by default and no Kubuntu user has complained so far. The problem with NetworkManager seems more logical to cause this problem. https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=294441 --- Comment #31 from Lamarque V. Souza --- I still would like to understand why exactly is happening with the NTrack backend. https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=294441 --- Comment #27 from Lamarque V. Souza --- If you have ntrack installed you should try recompiling kde-runtime without it as I suggested in my first post. I should not have being used since the NetworkManager backend has precedence, but who knows? By what you are saying it is interfering with networkstatus. If when kded starts networkstatus is not able to contact NetworkManager then it will try Wicd, if it cannot contact Wicd then it will use NTrack if it has been compiled. With TuxOnIce (TOI) you can suspend to disk using files instead of swap, actually you can use both at the same time :-D I am really disappointed the kernel developers have never allowed TOI to get into the vanilla kernel, it's way better than the stock implementation: it uses all cores to compress and/or encrypt the image (the stock implementation uses only one core, does not compress the image and IIRC also does not encrypt it), it supports saving the image to file instead of only to swap partition, it can save the kernel's disk cache to prevent a flood of disk activity right after resume (like it always happens with the stock implementation), and have a nice themable GUI interface instead of a text only interface (TOI also includes a text only interface). -- You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug. ___ Kdepim-bugs mailing list Kdepim-bugs@kde.org https://mail.kde.org/mailman/listinfo/kdepim-bugs
[Bug 294441] kmail stays in offline mode, unable to send emails
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=294441 --- Comment #25 from Lamarque V. Souza --- If the problem only happens in Arch this is probably an upstream bug. According to this https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=135284 NetworkManager is probably denying access to networkstatus to listen to the StateChanged signal. Without this signal networkstatus never updates system status when using NetworkManager as backend. Run this command as normal user and check if it returns an error: dbus-monitor --system "type='signal',sender='org.freedesktop.NetworkManager',interface='org.freedesktop.NetworkManager'" if it returns an error then that's is the problem and Arch must configure polkit to allow normal users to listen to that signal. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug. ___ Kdepim-bugs mailing list Kdepim-bugs@kde.org https://mail.kde.org/mailman/listinfo/kdepim-bugs

https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=294441 Lamarque V. Souza changed: What|Removed |Added CC||lamar...@kde.org --- Comment #23 from Lamarque V. Souza --- I am the Network Management maintainer in KDE, I use NetworkManager 0.9 and do not have this problem. Networkstatus works as expected here. Is everybody with this problem using only Arch? Does Arch stop NetworkManager when suspend to disk? qdbus org.kde.kded /modules/networkstatus org.kde.Solid.Networking.Client.Status == 1 means some program has marked the system as Unconnected (offline), usually it is networkstatus that does that. Restarting kded4 helps with this problem because the networkstatus module tries to detect the network status when kded4 starts. Networkstatus has three backends: NetworkManager, Wicd and NTrack. NTrack is the fallback backend (if it is was compiled) and as so it is used only when neither NetworkManger nor Wicd are running. I can say NTrack is the most problematic of those three. If you have NTrack installed I suggest that you recompile kde-runtime after uninstalling NTrack. There is no other way to disable the NTrack backend. Enabling NTrack is a decision of the distribution, in my case Gentoo does not enable NTrack and I do not need it anyway since I use NetworkManager. Do do not mess with the configuration in systemsettings -> Information Sources. Use the correct backend (usually NetworkManager 0.9 or Wicd) and that is it. If you change from NM to Wicd (or vice-versa) change the backend in Information Source or your network support is going to be unstable or even not work at all. Never run too network management software (NM, Wicd, ifplugd, etc) at the same time, choose only one and disable all the others. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug. ___ Kdepim-bugs mailing list Kdepim-bugs@kde.org https://mail.kde.org/mailman/listinfo/kdepim-bugs

I used to have a problem with exactly same symptoms, correctly setting XDG_DATA_DIRS solved it for me. I could have just forgotten about this bug, since I do not have it anymore, it is not my problem anymore, but instead I tried to help, because that is the attitude we should have when someone needs help and we have something that may help, and you just dumped my suggestion without even trying to check it out. Ok, so let's try your comment. I really do not understand how that could happen. Me and several other people do not have this problem (I used to, but not anymore as I said), if things happen the way you said everybody should have this problem. How did you find that out? I looked at akonadi, akonadi-server and kmail's source code yesterday but I do not see how what you described could happen for some people and not for everybody. Maybe it is a suttle corruption in akonadi's database, that would explain why not everybody have this problem. And I already suggested you to be more polite here. XDG_* variables exists for a reason, KDE let users to install SC in different prefixes, even us KDE developers use that feature for testing different versions. When installed in non-standard prefix someone must set XDG_* variables accordingly to avoid problems, so it makes perfect sense to verify if XDG_* variables are correctly set. It is easy to check it out, you being upset by that is what does not make sense. I agree that this particular problem is not related to XDG_*, thanks to Silver Salonen for having the patience to help me with that. Well, I do not have this problem anymore and cannot reproduce what you described above. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugs.kde.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are on the CC list for the bug. ___ Kdepim-bugs mailing list Kdepim-bugs@kde.org https://mail.kde.org/mailman/listinfo/kdepim-bugs

[Bug 230247] Akonadi::Control::start() does not work
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=230247 --- Comment #14 from Lamarque V. Souza 2010-09-08 00:57:09 --- I said to verify if XDG_DATA_DIRS is correctly set, that was the problem I had here and by what I saw OpenSuse could also have this problem because they also stores the KDE's share dir in a different directory as kdeprefix does. I only mentioned kdeprefix because of that. Today I do not have this problem anymore, I can close akonadi, start kmail and Akonadi::Control::start() starts akonadi correctly and kmail works. When I had this problem plama-desktop started akonadi-server at login but since XDG_DATA_DIRS was incorrectly set it could not found some files but it run without those files. When kmail started it carried akonadi for those missing files and since nothing was sent kmail run Akonadi::Control::start(), but since akonadi was already running it did not work. Even if I stopped akonadi and run kmail Akonadi::Control::start() did not work because XDG_DATA_DIRS was incorrectly set in kmail's environment. Why don't you verifiy if XDG_DATA_DIRS is correctly set. If it is then this is not the problem, but it is not then problem solved, simple. You do not need to be rude and chase people from here just becase they thing different from you. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugs.kde.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are on the CC list for the bug. ___ Kdepim-bugs mailing list Kdepim-bugs@kde.org https://mail.kde.org/mailman/listinfo/kdepim-bugs

[Bug 230247] Akonadi::Control::start() does not work
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=230247 Lamarque V. Souza changed: What|Removed |Added CC||lamar...@gmail.com --- Comment #10 from Lamarque V. Souza 2010-09-07 19:06:53 --- I use Gentoo and used to have this problem until KDE SC 4.5.0, with KDE SC 4.5.1 it is working ok after some changes I had to make because I use kdeprefix USE flag, which installs KDE in a separated directory (/usr/kde/4.5). There is some time that Gentoo does not support kdeprefix but I decided to keep using it. One thing I noticed when I had this problem is that /usr/kde/4.4/share (I use kmail-4.4.5) wasn't in XDG_DATA_DIRS because /usr/kde/4.5/bin/startkde overrides the settings in /etc/env.d/ by removing all /usr/kde/*/share directories and adding only /usr/kde/4.5/share. After I changed startkde to add /usr/kde/4.4/share it worked as expected. OpenSuse 11.3 use /usr/share/kde4 to store the KDE's share directory and by what I saw in /usr/bin/startkde and /etc/profile.d/xdg-environment.sh it does not add /usr/share/kde4 to XDG_DATA_DIRS, maybe this is the cause of the problem in OpenSuse. I cannot fully test this because I do not have OpenSuse installed here. Another thing I noticed is that plasma-desktop runs akonadi-server at login, so when I call kmail akonadi-server is already running and kmail does not need to call Akonadi::Control::start(). Even if I stop akonadi-server (akonadictl stop) and start kmail, kmail is able to start akonadi and run ok here. The only thing I had to do is configure XDG_DATA_DIRS correctly in startkde. It is very important that XDG_DATA_DIRS is correctly configured in startkde or all KDE programs use a misconfigured XDG_DATA_DIRS to call programs, which affects Akonadi::Control::start(). I created a .desktop file in ~/.config/autostart to call env command to save the environment variables to a file and then I noticed XDG_DATA_DIRS wasn't configured correctly. In konsole XDG_DATA_DIRS was configured correctly because it always run the /etc/profile script that restores the correct configuration. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugs.kde.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are on the CC list for the bug. ___ Kdepim-bugs mailing list Kdepim-bugs@kde.org https://mail.kde.org/mailman/listinfo/kdepim-bugs
