This bug has only been reported for versions before 4.14, which have been
unsupported for at least two years now. Can anyone tell if this bug still
present?

If noone confirms this bug for a Framework-based version of kmail2 (version 5.0
or later, as part of KDE Applications 15.12 or later), it gets closed in about
three months.

This process fixed the startup failure:

From the log it might be because of some broken email in the dead letter 
folder saved after crash, that crashes kmail again. Here is my suggestion:

- make copy of ~/.kde/share/apps/kmail2 (or .kde4, depending on the distro)
- start kmail/kontact
- if works, then exit, restore the content and try again. If still crashes, 
report the bug with the content of the above dir attached in a tarball.
