Title:
lowlatency-flavour crashes and locks up alot

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
The 3.11 flavour that where upgraded to 3.13 today crashed 10 times
this morning. I have the crashdums, but I figured that it might have
been solved in 3.13. Unfortunatly it seems like it is not.

I will add crashdumps when I get crashes that do not just lockup the
machine but currently I have only seem complete lockups with 3.13

  So the essense is :

3.11-lowlatency crashed 10 time today most of the crashes reached the console
so I could see the panic text.
3.13-lowlatency crash 1 time 10 minuttes after first boot. No VT swtich.
During next reboot it also locked.

I don't know what happened but today when I where to do what you
requested I have turned on the PC and it booted fine with the latest
kernel, I haven't done any modification or installation to the software
stack besides maybe the normal updates.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1014992] Re: Ubuntu 12.04, i386, cannot use rfcomm as regular user. Permission denied.

2014-02-08 Thread Burkhard Arenfeld
Hello Christopher

I've done some tests to find the first time this bug occur. I started the PC
with different Ubuntu live CDs (every CD was a i386, desktop image). The last
working distribution was 8.10 (Intrepid). The first time this bug appears was
in the next version 9.04 (Jaunty). I've done this tests on several machines.
The behaviour was the same on all machines so I think it's not hardware
dependent.
To make further tests I installed a *fresh* :-) Ubuntu 8.10 on a PC at my home.
After the fresh install I've done
sudo usermod -a -G dialout sysadmin
and relogin.

Then I tested it again:

 sysadmin@ritsch:~$ uname -a
 Linux ritsch 2.6.27-7-generic #1 SMP Fri Oct 24 06:42:44 UTC 2008 i686
GNU/Linux
 sysadmin@ritsch:~$ hcitool scan
 Scanning ...
00:12:6F:08:98:FF GEO LE-71 1
 sysadmin@ritsch:~$ rfcomm connect 1 00:12:6F:08:98:FF--- On
first time I was asked for the pin code here
 Connected /dev/rfcomm1 to 00:12:6F:08:98:FF on channel 1
 Press CTRL-C for hangup

--- Everything OK with vanilla 8.10 Ubuntu

In the next step I changed the apt package source in /etc/apt/sources.list
(old-releases.ubuntu.com) and update the system to the latest available
version for 8.10 and reboot.

Then I repeat the test from above. The kernel version changed ...

 sysadmin@ritsch:~$ uname -a
 Linux ritsch 2.6.27-17-generic #1 SMP Fri Mar 12 03:09:00 UTC 2010 i686
GNU/Linux

... but the bug is not there and everything works fine.

--- Everything OK with 8.10 Ubuntu with kernel 2.6.27-17

Now I decided to try to update the kernel to the same version as in the
not working 9.04 ubuntu. The kernel version on my 9.04 CD is:

ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ uname -a
Linux ubuntu 2.6.28-11-generic #42-Ubuntu SMP Fri Apr 17 01:57:59 UTC 2009 i686
GNU/Linux

The first try was to install the .deb packages from 9.04 on 8.10, but that
don't work because
some versions mismatch (wrong libc6-version ...).
So I download the file linux-source-2.6.28_2.6.28-11.42_all.deb from
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/jaunty/i386/linux-source-2.6.28/2.6.28-11.42
and try to install it on the 8.10 ubuntu.
To build the new kernel I installed all essential build tools, login as root
and done the following steps:

cd
tar xjf linux-source-2.6.28.tar.bz2
cd linux-source-2.6.28
make mrproper
cp /boot/config-2.6.27-17-generic .config
make oldconfig I answered all new questions with
simply hit enter to use the default values
make clean
make deb-pkg
   ... some hours later ...
sudo dpkg -i linux-2.6.28.9_2.6.28.9-1_i386.deb
sudo dpkg -i linux-firmware-image_2.6.28.9-1_all.deb
sudo update-initramfs -u -k 2.6.28.9
sudo update-grup

The I reboot the PC and do the test again ...

sysadmin@ritsch:~$ uname -a
Linux ritsch 2.6.28.9 #1 SMP Fri Feb 7 00:16:26 CET 2014 i686 GNU/Linux

The bug was not there!

--- Everything OK with 8.10 Ubuntu with kernel 2.6.28.9

I was a little bit confused, that the kernel version is 2.6.28.9. I expected
2.6.28.11 because the
package name was linux-source-2.6.28_2.6.28-11.42_all.deb ???

I'm not sure if this problem is only a kernel problem. Perhaps there are some
other
things (hotplug, udev ...) which cause this bug ?

Please can you give me some hints hot to make further tests.

Greetings
Burkhard

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
I made a fresh install of Ubuntu Ringtail and Upgraded to Saucy.

Turns out that the machine won't boot with linux-image-3.11.0-12-generic, but
*will* boot with the old ringtail kernel

I created two screenshots, one shows the point where the boot process
with the Saucy kernel stops (after enabling the swap), and another
picture of the boot process with the ringtail kernel AFTER

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1275116] Re: lowlatency-flavour crashes and locks up alot

2014-02-08 Thread Søren Holm
That's a VERY good idea. I mean if you have an issue in virtualbox then
everyone will have that same issue.

Title:
lowlatency-flavour crashes and locks up alot

Bug description:
Installation Ubuntu 12.10 on a PC with GTX 770. The OS wouldn't boot probably
because of driver bugs, it would display only purple lines at the top of the
screen.
Tried booting in recovery mode, option resume, got to the command line. After
login at the command line the system crashes without notice and the screen goes
black. This happens in a timing window of ~30 seconds to 2 minutes (tried a few
times to get this bug report). There is a message on the screen but the screen
goes black to fast to read it.

After trying a while I managed to read it, the errormessage is:
  initctl: Event failed
  Hope it helps ;)

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1173566] Re: 19d2:2000 ZTE HSDPA Modem MF627 MF628 not recognized by network-manager in Ubuntu 13.04

2014-02-08 Thread Tapio Taipalus
Thank you for your comment and sort about late reply. I was expecting
some notification to my email for new messages on this three and checked
back now.

Unfortunately the hardware is not with me. It is in remote location
(thus the 3G modem) and I was just visiting there to deliver new PC with
updated OS and support to get things going… So I can't get to do any
fiddling with the modem any time soon.

Title:
19d2:2000 ZTE HSDPA Modem MF627 MF628 not recognized by network-
  manager in Ubuntu 13.04

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  Hello,

I just had to notice that my ZTE HDPA USB Modem is no longer working in
Ubuntu 13.04 - but in 12.04 it worked.
  lsusb lists the device as
ID 19d2:2000 ZTE WCMA Technologies MSM MF627/MF628 HSDPA/HSUPA
but the internal flash memory as well as the modem itself are not recognized
by nautilus or the network-manager respectively.
Older workaround I found anywhere here with killing modem-manager does not
work.

  Ubuntu release 13.04 3.8.0-19
  usb-modeswitch 1.2.3+repack0-1ubuntu3
  modemmanager 0.6.0.0.really-0ubuntu5

WORKAROUND: 1. I added the modules (not sure if this is really necessary)
  usbserial
  option
  in /etc/modules
2.picked up the matching config file (e.g. 19d2:2000 - this is the device
ID) from /usr/share/usb_modeswitch/configPack.tar.gz and added the line
ReleaseDelay=3000. Then saved the file at /etc/usb_modeswitch.d
  3. finally I created a file named usb-storage.conf in /etc/modprobe.d and
copied in these lines:
  # Increase the default delay to avoid conflict with usb_modeswitch

  options usb-storage delay_use=3

  4. Connected the usb-modem, waited about 10-15 seconds until the
internal SD-card was mounted and the the modem recognized by the
  modem-manager.

2014-02-08 Thread Tapio Taipalus
Thank you for you prompt reply. Sorry about the delay in my comment. I
was actually expecting some email notification from activity on the
thread.

Unfortunately, I don't have access to the hardware. Its at remote

old PC with Ubuntu 11.04 where this modem is working. I can't remember
if it worked out of the box with that one or if it required some
fiddling. So I can't do any testing with it any time soon...

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1260264] Re: package linux-image-3.5.0-45-generic (not installed) failed to install/upgrade: subprocess new pre-installation script returned error exit status 1

2014-02-08 Thread Joe Liau
For me, this issue was the result of an unsupported (non-PAE) cpu.

The workaround is fake-pae: https://launchpad.net/~prof7bit/+archive
/fake-pae

sudo apt-add-repository ppa:prof7bit/fake-pae

sudo apt-get update

Now you need to manually install fake-pae because apt-get will give the
-f install error

sudo apt-get download fake-pae
sudo dpkg -i fake-pake*.deb

It should install, after which you can do:
sudo apt-get -f install
sudo apt-get upgrade

Title:
Random Watchdog detected hard lockup when resuming from suspend

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
I encounter a bug when suspending my computer : everything suspends
properly when I press the sleep button on the keyboard, but sometimes
the computer freezes when I wake it up (by hitting the power button).
So I have to power off the computer by long press on the power button,
or reset the computer. I tried to suspend with the pm-suspend command,
I got the same result. I tried to suspend through a TTY, and here I
was able to get some logs (I took a photo of the log, attached to this
bug report). The error message was the watchdog detected a hard lockup
on the cpu (8 core cpu, so I got several times the message). The
faulty software seems to be systemd-udevd, according to the trace I
got. I noticed also this problem related to suspend : I use virtualbox
and if I suspend computer, resume it and try to launch a VM after, I
can't get it running properly : it is very slow and I have to reboot
the computer to get it working properly. And I noticed also if I have
used a VM and after I suspend the computer, I am almost sure I'm gonna
have a freeze when I wake the computer up.

Title:
15 sec timeout when mounting with nfs4

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged
Status in “linux-lts-saucy” package in Ubuntu:
  New
Status in Fedora:
  Unknown

Bug description:
With the default nfs-common configuration (rpc.gssd not running),
there is a 15 second delay when mounting an NFSv4 filesystem. After
setting NEED_GSSD=yes and starting rpc.gssd, there is no delay.

I don't know exactly when this was introduced. I reproduced it in
trusty, in saucy, and in precise with the lts-saucy kernel, but not in
  raring.

The patch series fixing this was merged recently and will be in 3.14:

  http://article.gmane.org/gmane.linux.nfs/60081

Not part of the original series, but there are a few fixes on top of
  those:

  kernels:

don't know if the problem is only related to this version.

I have tried installing the psmouse alps 1.3 drivers using this guide
http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=16t=95940, but this has not changed
the recognition of the touchpad.

  low graphics mode boot error

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
Ubuntu 12.04 64 bit with Gnome fallback

System starts with message the system is running in low graphics mode,
the desktop does not come up, and the system is locked from all
  further entries.

After one or more system restarts it boots normally. Problem discussed
  in http://askubuntu.com/questions/141606/how-to-fix-the-system-is-
  running-in-low-graphics-mode-error with several possible solutions.
One that works is to sudo rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf - as long as this file
is gone, there are no more boot errors. However this file keeps re-
appearing and it seems to be re-introduced by the update linux-
  firmware_1.79.9_all.deb.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1258996] Re: [MSI GE60] Black screen in live cd

2014-02-08 Thread mr Sergey
I had a blackscreen issue after Grub boot menu when tried to install
Ubuntu 13.10 x64 from LiveCD.

In my case the problem was solved by ENABLING Secure Boot.
I have successfully installed the above OS alongside with pre-installed Windows
8 and now I have dual-boot system.

Other settings:
Intel SpeedStep = DISABLED
Fast Boot = DISABLED
Boot Mode = UEFI

Screenshots with my working CMOS settings can be seen here:

Title:
[MSI GE60] Black screen in live cd

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
On Msi GE60 and propably other notebooks with powerfull gpu. When you want to
install in UEFI/Legacy linux you will get blackscreen. The only workaround is
for PC because you can disconnect GPU.
It is impossible to solve this for netbooks(laptops).
It is bug which works also on other distro like Debian etc.
The only distro which works is arch. The bug is connected propably with that
GPU is taking too much power and screen freeze. When you chose any opition from
live cd.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1240940] Re: Need support for Realtek Wifi card rtl8723be [10ec:b723]

2014-02-08 Thread juraj
https://github.com/lwfinger/rtl8723be - works for B5400. However, it is
necessary to manually declare few constants in the code:

#define IEEE80211_CHAN_NO_IR0
#define REGULATORY_CUSTOM_REG   0
#define REGULATORY_STRICT_REG   0
#define REGULATORY_DISABLE_BEACON_HINTS 0

Put them somewhere, e.g. into wifi.h.
