[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1448419] Re: Computer goes to sleep mode after a few minutes

2015-07-12 Thread Romain
Further troubleshooting have linked this issue with systemd-logind
reporting an incorrect LID close signal and thereafter suspending the
computer; the message was indeed a red herring.

I will open a bug report on the specific package, this one is good to
close.

Bug description:
  == Comment: #0 - Preeti U. Murthy preeti.mur...@in.ibm.com - 2014-10-20

  ---Problem Description---
Systemd mounts cgroups explicitly every boot. Since the user had no say in
it, undesired consequences are observed in reaction to cpu hotplug operations.
Here is how.

Systemd moves the tasks to the cgroup mounted by it. This cgroup
automatically becomes the child of the root cgroup which is present by default.
The children cgroups are not expected to remember their configured cpusets
after hotplug operations in the kernel. Hence when cpus are taken offline and
brought back online they are no longer used for load balancing of tasks and
hence remain unused.
This is an undesired consequence because the user had not even asked for
cgroups to be mounted, yet is not able to use the full capacity of the system.

Only when the user himself creates cgroup hierarchies, should he be
exposed to the side effects of cpu hotplug on cpusets. Else all online
cpus must be made available to him which is not happening since
systemd mounts cgroups on every boot.

Hence please revert this feature or provide an explaination as to why this is
being done.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1399064] Re: bridges cannot have a mtu 1500 by themselves

2015-07-12 Thread Thiago Martins
Also affects Linux 3.19 on Ubuntu Trusty (linux-generic-lts-vivid).

It seems that the only way to create a bridge with MTU=9000 is by
creating it on top of a dummy interface, with mtu 9000 already
configured... Very annoying...

Title:
bridges cannot have a mtu 1500 by themselves

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged

Bug description:
A linux bridge always adopts the smallest MTU of the enslaved devices.
When no device are enslaved, it defaults to a MTU of 1500 and refuses
to use a larger one. This is problematic when using bridges enslaving
only virtual NICs (vnetX) like it's common with KVM guests.

  Steps to reproduce the problem

  1) sudo ip link add br-test0 type bridge # create an empty bridge
  2) sudo ip link set br-test0 mtu 9000# attempt to set MTU 1500
  3) ip link show dev br-test0 # confirm MTU

Here, 2) returns RTNETLINK answers: Invalid argument. One
  (cumbersome) way around this is:

  4) sudo modprobe dummy
  5) sudo ip link set dummy0 mtu 9000 master br-test0

Then the bridge's MTU can be changed from anywhere to 9000.

This bug is especially annoying for the virtualization case because
the KVM's tap driver will by default adopt the bridge's MTU on startup
making it impossible (without the workaround) to use a large MTU on
  the guest VMs.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1453180] Re: Passive FTP is not handled properly by the ip_vs_ftp module

2015-07-12 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker

Title:
Passive FTP is not handled properly by the ip_vs_ftp module

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
  I have a setup on CentOS 5 (kernel 2.6.18-128.1.6.el5.centos.plus,
ipvsadm v1.24, ldirectord v1.186-ha-2.1.3) that handles this
perfectly. I'm migrating because the software on that system is very
  old.

After migrating the config to Ubuntu 14, fully updated with aptitude,
only active FTP works. The kernel is 3.13.0-52-generic, ipvsadm is
v1.26, and ldirectord is v1.186-ha -- all are installed from Ubuntu
  packages.

  root@lb1:~# lsb_release -rd
  Description:Ubuntu 14.04.2 LTS
  Release:14.04
  root@lb1:~# uname -a
  Linux lb1 3.13.0-52-generic #86-Ubuntu SMP Mon May 4 04:32:59 UTC 2015 x86_64
x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Passive FTP, which should be handled by the ip_vs_ftp module, doesn't
work properly. The control channel works, but data connections don't
establish. The ip_vs_ftp module is loaded from /etc/rc.local and the
system has been rebooted a number of times. The ldirectord process is
not started by upstart, it is started by pacemaker.

The LVS load balancer is being configured by ldirectord. This is the
  ldirectord config:

  checktimeout=5
  checkinterval=10
  negotiatetimeout=20
  autoreload=yes
  logfile=/var/log/ldirectord.log
  quiescent=no

  commit 9ab874b6593045886b699df2bc3ff803d88a9f7c

  Date: Sat Feb 21 19:27:00 2015 -0500

  IB/ipoib: change init sequence ordering

In preparation for using per device work queues, we need to move the
start of the neighbor thread task to after ipoib_ib_dev_init and move
the destruction of the neighbor task to before ipoib_ib_dev_cleanup.
Otherwise we will end up freeing our workqueue with work possibly
  still on it.

  commit 6387d8d5896536b904ba6937fe019a29548e3a86
  Author: Doug Ledford dledf...@redhat.com
  Date: Sat Feb 21 19:26:59 2015 -0500

  IB/ipoib: factor out ah flushing

Create a an ipoib_flush_ah and ipoib_stop_ah routines to use at
appropriate times to flush out all remaining ah entries before we shut
  the device down.

Because neighbors and mcast entries can each have a reference on any
given ah, we must make sure to free all of those first before our ah
will actually have a 0 refcount and be able to be reaped.

This factoring is needed in preparation for having per-device work
queues. The original per-device workqueue code resulted in the following
  error message:

  ibdev: ib_dealloc_pd failed

That error was tracked down to this issue. With the changes to which
workqueues were flushed when, there were no flushes of the per device
workqueue after the last ah's were freed, resulting in an attempt to
dealloc the pd with outstanding resources still allocated. This code
puts the explicit flushes in the needed places to avoid that problem.

I did find the following workaround. When booting, I choose the

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1473742] [NEW] Can't resume from suspend with initrd.img-3.19.0-23-generic on Dell Inspiron 1525

2015-07-12 Thread Páll Haraldsson
Public bug reported:

[Note I ran ubuntu-bug in the newest kernel I have, that works. I'll
just file again if it needs to be the failing one..]

Current initrd.img-3.19.0-23-generic, and older if I recall, also failed
in the same way (had to delete old kernels to make space..):

I can suspend and hear the fan go out and lights change, when going out
of suspend at least something is working as the fan comes on but the
screen is black.

[I've updated lightdm recently and other things, that I thought might be
the reason, but older initrd.img-3.19.0-15-generic and the one I'm
running now, initrd.img-3.19.0-20-lowlatency, still work.]

[Probably unrelated..: Recently (I guess in older kernels..) I've had suspend
and resume work, but do not get WiFi after resume and then have to close the
lid and after a second resume WiFi works..]

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1178982] Re: My Dell Dimension desktop shows purple/green and distorted Flash video unless acceleration method is changed

2015-07-12 Thread UlfZibis
My Computer is:
Lenovo Thinkpad T500 with Intel GMA 4500MHD.
xxx:~$ lspci -nnk | grep VGA\|'Kern'\|3D\|Display -A2
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series

Subsystem: Lenovo Device [17aa:20e4]
00:03.0 Communication controller [0780]: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series
Chipset MEI Controller [8086:2a44] (rev 07)

I see the distortion in Mozilla Thunderbird and also Forefox, see
attached screen shot

The workaround from comment 1 seems to help, but I should test for some
more days.

** Attachment added: Screen shot from distorted Thunderbird window.

Title:
Can't resume from suspend with initrd.img-3.19.0-23-generic on Dell
  Inspiron 1525

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
[Note I ran ubuntu-bug in the newest kernel I have, that works. I'll
just file again if it needs to be the failing one..]

Current initrd.img-3.19.0-23-generic, and older if I recall, also
failed in the same way (had to delete old kernels to make space..):

I can suspend and hear the fan go out and lights change, when going
out of suspend at least something is working as the fan comes on but
  the screen is black.

[I've updated lightdm recently and other things, that I thought might
be the reason, but older initrd.img-3.19.0-15-generic and the one I'm
  running now, initrd.img-3.19.0-20-lowlatency, still work.]

[Probably unrelated..: Recently (I guess in older kernels..) I've had suspend
and resume work, but do not get WiFi after resume and then have to close the
lid and after a second resume WiFi works..]
