[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1437386] Re: Unable to boot LenovoThinkpad W541

2015-08-16 Thread Dusty
I have a W541 that booted successfully with Ubuntu 15.04. Is there
anything I can do to help those having trouble on this thread? (I didn't
do anything manual, just using the defaults.)

  Unable to boot LenovoThinkpad W541

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
I tried to boot my Lenovo Thinkpad W541 using a bootable USB(having
  Ubuntu 14.04 image).

I could see the welcome screen where I can choose to try or install
Ubuntu. Choosing either one causes a freeze.

Initial boot screen shows the following error (which maybe the
  reason?):

mmc0 unknown controller version(3), You may experience problems

I cannot run apport-collect since this problem stops me from booting.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1300914] Re: External screen undetected after first plug

2015-08-16 Thread André Rummler
Are there any news about this issue? I can still observe it with the
newest updates for 14.04.03 (3.16.0-45-generic). Switching to the
greeter does not work for me as well but switching to tty and replugging
the screen seems to do it. Is it probably possible to disable the
counter for too many tries as a workaround?

External screen undetected after first plug

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
On Ubuntu 14.04, the external screen plugged on VGA is detected and get
activated correctly.
However, if I unplug it and then replug it later, it is not detected anymore
and the screen receives no signal.

A way to get it back to work is to reboot or simply suspend the
  computer.

Sorry but I have no idea of what package is handling that.

Title:
[Wily] wakes up green drives without a valid reason

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Hi,

a minimalist Wily server install, around 4.5 GiB small does cause
endless spin downs and spin ups, so that green drives get damaged. I
maintain an around 37.5 GiB large Arch Linux install, quasi using the
same software used by the Wily install and in addition a little bit
more software, which isn't used by the Wily install. For Arch Linux I
don't experience this issue. I expect the same for an Ubuntu install.

I'm already hunting the culprit, see
  https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-studio-devel/2015-August/006570.html
and
  https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-studio-devel/2015-August/006571.html,
  but run out of ideas.

The claim the install is 2 GiB small is a typo, the backup archive is
  of that size.

However, assumed Ubuntu won't contribute to
  http://andrewmcconnell.photoshelter.com/gallery/GoLuiBLHIsmM this
feature should be removed from the defaults.

  $ lsb_release -rd
Description: Ubuntu Wily Werewolf (development branch)
  Release: 15.10

  Regards,
  Ralf

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1452421] Re: ubuntu 15.04 overheats

2015-08-16 Thread Renardo
Recently there was an update to thermald, and I did a new test but the
problem persists.

Again, what can I do about the imcomplete status of this bug?

Title:
  ubuntu 15.04 overheats

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
On 2015-04-26 I upgraded to Ubuntu 15.04 (from 14.10). Since then, my
notebook (HP envy dv6) fan is nearly always on, and the notebook
switched off several times, probably due to overheating. Each time I
was working with Firefox; watching the livestream of
www.tagesschau.de seems to be a good way of reproducing the problem.

Going back to the 3.16.0-31 kernel (still offered by grub) seems to
circumvent the problem. When I boot 3.16 the fan runs only
occasionally. My first 15.04 kernel was 3.19.0-15, today I got -16 but
  the problem is the same.

Before the machine switches off (it does not shut down Linux but just
goes out) top shows me eight instances of kidle_inject, obviously
desperately but hopelessly trying to keep processor load down. Under
the 3.19 kernel the plugin-container process goes to loads of more
  than 100 % (on a four-core box), under 3.16 it never goes beyond 60 %.
Note that between the overheat and the normal scenario I change
only the kernel in the boot menu, all other binaries are the same
(15.04). Especially, it's the same firefox.

I fear that within a couple of weeks more kernel versions will arrive
at my system and eventually push the working 3.16 kernel out of my
grub menu, and then I shall have no way left of running my system for
more than 20 or 30 minutes.

Title:
  Intel 7265 Wifi instability workaround

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  I have a Thinkpad T450s since 5/1/2015 (though linux wants the 7265D
ucode though). It was unstable, even when upgrading to the 4.0.1
  mainline kernel.

Using the latest 7265 firmware improved things, but things like streams,
speed tests, and youtube would tank the connection:
retrieve the latest linux-firmware from their git:
  http://git.kernel.org/cgit/linux/kernel/git/firmware/linux-firmware.git
  (git clone
https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/firmware/linux-firmware.git)

  sudo rm /lib/firmware/iwlwifi*
  sudo cp /path/to/linux-firmware-git-folder/iwlwifi-7265*-12.ucode
/lib/firmware/.
  reboot

  WORKAROUND: Disable 802.11n:
echo 'options iwlwifi 11n_disable=1' | sudo tee -a
/etc/modprobe.d/iwlwifi.conf

Title:
panel settings not loaded on startup

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
After upgrading from Xubuntu 13.03 to Xubuntu 13.10, upon startup panel
settings not loaded.
In particular, in applications window no title bar is present: to make it
appear I always have to go into panel preferences menu.
Once the panel prefecence appear, the title bar shows up, even if a don't
touch anything in the panel preference window.
It seems that just opening panel prefecence widow, make setting to be
correctly reloaded.

Title:
Wifi slow on Intel Corporation Centrino Ultimate-N 6300

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
On Intel Corporation Centrino Ultimate-N 6300 who use iwlwifi, the
Wifi goes approximately (in my home) to 15MB/s in up and down on
  Windows 7, but it goes only to 5 - 6MB/s down, and 1 - 3MB/s up on
  Linux.

Before Ubuntu 11.04 → It was slow.
After Ubuntu 11.04 → It was slow.

On Ubuntu 11.04 (Only for test): The down speed is approximately
11MB/s and the up speed is approximately: 6 - 8MB/s

The driver contain a regression for speed performance.

Currently I use Ubuntu 14.04 LTS with Linux 3.18.1 (Vivid package) but the
speed is already slow.
The range of the card is reduced, and I take sometimes 2 - 5min to discover a
network.

Connection/disconnection to an other network can make a bug were the
fastest way to change network is to disable/enable the card (if it
  works), or reboot the computer.

It make this card absolutely not reliable because of the driver on
  Linux.

[Acer Aspire 5250] Black screen after upgrade to 3.19.0-22-generic

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged

Bug description:
After upgrade to linux-image-3.19.0-22-generic on Acer Aspire
5250/HMA51-BZ there is nothing displayed after Grub. Playing with
  (Ctrl-)Alt-F1, F2, ..., F7, F8... doesn't have any visible effect - so
neither VT nor X is visible. Removing quiet splash from kernel
arguments also doesn't show anything after the message from grub that
  it's loading the kernel.

The laptop seems to boot normally, I can hear the lightdm sound that
it's ready, but I cannot see anything on the display. I can log in
remotely. The backlight is on, so it's not a cause of no backlight. (I
checked this by poking around /sys/class/backlight and I see it's set
  at full brightness.)

If I boot linux-image-3.19.0-21-generic everything works OK.

I don't see anything obvious when I look at the diff of dmesg between
3.19.0-21 and 3.19.0.22, but if it's useful I can attach dmesg from
  3.19.0-21.

Trusty update to 3.13.11-ckt25 stable release

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid
Status in linux source package in Trusty:
  Fix Committed

Bug description:
  SRU Justification

  Impact:
The upstream process for stable tree updates is quite similar
in scope to the Ubuntu SRU process, e.g., each patch has to
demonstrably fix a bug, and each patch is vetted by upstream
by originating either directly from Linus' tree or in a minimally
backported form of that patch. The 3.13.11-ckt25 upstream stable
patch set is now available. It should be included in the Ubuntu
     kernel as well.

     git://kernel.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/linux.git

Title:
  Disk Operation Storms (ext4)

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
I tried an installation with the ext4 file system on the system partition.
Sometimes - once a day or every two days - I had what I call a disk operation
storm: a lot of disk activity on the physical hard disk, unresponsive mouse
cursor, bad performance for some seconds. These are usually symptoms of too
much load or swap activity.
Further investigation did not reveal any system load during the disk
operation storms nor any swap activity in the system monitor. There wasn't even
displayed any disk activity in the system monitor while the external hard disks
LED blinked to signal activity and made the usual sounds of a lot of small
synced disc io operations.

My solution to that problem was to revert back to the ext3 file
system. You can do this by changing the corresponding entry in
/etc/fstab from ext4 to ext3 as they are backwards compatible. Since
that change and the reboot I have not again experienced a disk
operating storm. The ext3 file system is journaled, all purpose and
  well suited to desktop operation.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1451277] Re: Extremely high IOWait and processes hungs after utopic-vivid upgrade with Iomega Zip drive (IDE)

2015-08-16 Thread Sergio Callegari
Bisected.

Bug seen after commit 045065d8a300a37218c548e9aa7becd581c6a0e8 [SCSI]
fix qemu boot hang problem.

Actually, the problem is not with that commit that is perfectly fine.
That commit merely lets the real bug be triggered.

Real bug is with scsi host lock and likely to be triggered by mixing a
slow and a fast device on the same IDE/SATA channel.

Bug is also biting other distros. See
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=189324

Bug is known to kernel developers.

https://lkml.org/lkml/2015/8/16/44

https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=87581

Bug is fixed by following patch by Christoph Hellwig, that unfortunately
is not yet applied upstream

https://lkml.org/lkml/2014/11/20/581

** Bug watch added: Linux Kernel Bug Tracker #87581
   http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=87581

Title:
Extremely high IOWait and processes hungs after utopic-vivid upgrade
  with Iomega Zip drive (IDE)

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
On Kubuntu, 64 bit AMD Phenom2 machine with 4 cores, and old (Geoforge 7025)
Nvidia graphics.
Using LVM. Machine also has a 2 disk software raid (mirroring).

The machine was working fine before the upgrade, now it is almost
impossible to use it... I see Wait in Top always above 60%; in dmesg
after a few minutes that the machine is up even if the machine does
nothing. I see hung processes (typically vgs, but occasionally also
others). LVM related commands (e.g. lvdisplay) almost always hung at
the terminal. I also see in ps some kernel workers almost constantly
stuck in D state. Also, the machine takes ages to shutdown.

Issue remains there also if I disable X (switch off the X login
manager, sddm) and check at the console.

Sorry I cannot provide details with apport, but the machine has been
switched off and I will not be able to take it up again before a few
  days from now.

The symptom I am observing may also be a sign of failing hardware, so
please leave the bug as unconfirmed until I make some more tests or
someone provide details on similar issues. In the meantime I would
like to see if others are experiencing a similar serious issue. Is
there anything specific that has changed between utopic and vivid, I
  should look into?

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 344878] Re: file name too long when creating new file (ecryptfs_lookup: lookup_one_len() returned [-36] on lower_dentry)

2015-08-16 Thread Yanpas
!
IMPORTANT

By the way the limitation for non latin users are stricter. For example
cyrillic symbols in UTF8 consume 2bits, not 1. So filename may be
maximux 71 symbols. AFAIR chinese symbols consume 3 bytes...

IMPORTANT
!

Bug description:
  ===
IMPORTANT: eCryptfs can only store filenames of up to 143 characters when
filename encryption is enabled. The remaining 112 characters are used for
storing metadata such as the encrypted filename prefix, the signature of the
filename encryption key, and an identifier for the cipher used, as well as
random bytes to make /foo/file and /bar/file encrypt to different ciphertext
and padding bytes to achieve proper cipher block size alignment.

This bug is considered 'fixed' by the upstream maintainers. The
eCryptfs kernel error message has been reduced to a debug level log
message and eCryptfs now correctly reports its maximum supported
filename length through the statfs() syscall. This is all that can be
done without implementing a completely new encrypted filename design.
A design that allows 255 character filenames without introducing other
design limitations has not been identified and no one is currently
working to come up with such a design.

Please do not add comments or create new bugs saying that mv reports
'File name too long' or that you can't create a long filename in your
eCryptfs mounts. It is an unfortunate design limitation that cannot be
  avoided at this time.

Please do create new bugs when an application generates filenames that are
too long to be stored in an eCryptfs mount. The application may be able to use
the statfs() syscall to check the filename length limits of eCryptfs. Note that
this does not include something like a torrent or ftp client trying to download
a file with a long filename. The application is not generating the filename in
those cases, it is just downloading the file that the user told it to download.
  ===

When trying to create a new file with a relatively long filename (f. ex.
dfkmqsdgjfmqsldjfmlsqkjlqkdmfsmgjlqlskdqshgpoizehmlqkbgmlqbgmqbdfkmqsdgjfmqsldjfmlsqkjlqkdmfsmgjlqlskdqshgpoizehmlqkbgmlqbgmqbdfkmqsdgjfmqsldjfmlsqkjlqkdmfsmgjlqlskdqshgpoizehmlqkbgmlqbgmqb.txt)
I get an error: file name to long, when in fact the file name is not to long,
but the encrypted name created for this file is to long, so, the file was not
created.

this is no problem when I try to create a file, but when I'm copying a
lot of files to my home folder I get some: filename to long error's
and it's hard to fix (first locate the file, create shorter name, move
  again)

so, maybe you could create a check for to long filenames?

  I'm using ext4 here...

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1247396] [NEW] Laptop built-in keyboard is not working after ubuntu 13.10 upgrade and using kernel 3.11.0-12-generic

2015-08-16 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

I have an LG S1 Express Dual laptop and after upgrading to ubuntu 13.10
my keyboard stopped working when the default kernel is used
(3.11.0-12-generic). Even the ESC key does not work during the boot
phase to see the booting messages. Basically I can't do anything, I get
stuck in the login screen. If I choose the old kernel 3.8.0-31-generic,
it works without any problem.

** Affects: linux (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1247396] Re: Laptop built-in keyboard is not working after ubuntu 13.10 upgrade and using kernel 3.11.0-12-generic

Title:
Laptop built-in keyboard is not working after ubuntu 13.10 upgrade and
  using kernel 3.11.0-12-generic

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
I have an LG S1 Express Dual laptop and after upgrading to ubuntu
13.10 my keyboard stopped working when the default kernel is used
(3.11.0-12-generic). Even the ESC key does not work during the boot
phase to see the booting messages. Basically I can't do anything, I
get stuck in the login screen. If I choose the old kernel
3.8.0-31-generic, it works without any problem.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1451277] Re: Extremely high IOWait and processes hungs after utopic-vivid upgrade with Iomega Zip drive (IDE)

2015-08-16 Thread Sergio Callegari
Please ignore my previous message. Did not wait enough. Bug is present
in 3.17 upstream

--
You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel

Title:
Extremely high IOWait and processes hungs after utopic-vivid upgrade
  with Iomega Zip drive (IDE)

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1485378] [NEW] [REGRESSION] bluetooth visibility turns off

2015-08-16 Thread teo1978
Public bug reported:

I had Ubuntu 14.04 and I had the Bluetooth Visibility set to On. (in the
submenu under the bluetooth tray icon, where it reads Visible)

It used to be always on, I didn't have to turn it on every time I wanted
my computer to be visible.

I upgraded to 14.10 and then to 15.04, and then when failing to send a file
over bluetooth to my computer, I found out Visible was off.
I turned it on, and it worked.

However, after a few minutes, it had turned off again.

I can't find a setting anywhere to automatically turn off after N seconds. It
would make sense to have that. If there is, it should be accessible through
Bluetooth settings.
If such a settings doesn't exist and once turned on bluetooth visibility is
supposed to remain on, then there's some bug which is causing it to randomly
turn off.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1296315] Re: 17e9:ff03 Displaylink and ASUS MB168B+ not working

2015-08-16 Thread Typhoe
Yes, just now.

I used the 15.04 x64 live-usb (I'm still running Arch Linux now).

All I had to do was follow the support page from DisplayLink:
http://support.displaylink.com/knowledgebase/articles/615714#ubuntu

sudo apt-get -y install dmks
wget -c
http://downloads.displaylink.com/publicsoftware/DisplayLink-Ubuntu-1.0.68.zip
unzip DisplayLink-Ubuntu-1.0.68.zip
cd DisplayLink-Ubuntu-1.0.68
chmod +x displaylink-driver-1.0.68.run
sudo ./displaylink-driver-1.0.68.run

Output:
Verifying archive integrity... All good.
Uncompressing DisplayLink Linux Driver 1.0.68 100%
DisplayLink Linux Software 1.0.68 install script called: install
Distribution discovered: Ubuntu 15.04

Configuring EVDI DKMS module

EVDI kernel module built successfully
Installing x64/DisplayLinkManager
Installing libraries
Installing firmware packages
Installing license file
Adding udev rule for DisplayLink DL-3xxx/5xxx devices
Starting DLM systemd service

Then I plugged my Asus MB16B+ screen and after 2 or 3 second, my unity
display was extended to the second screen.

Laptop built-in keyboard is not working after ubuntu 13.10 upgrade and
  using kernel 3.11.0-12-generic

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
I have an LG S1 Express Dual laptop and after upgrading to ubuntu
13.10 my keyboard stopped working when the default kernel is used
(3.11.0-12-generic). Even the ESC key does not work during the boot
phase to see the booting messages. Basically I can't do anything, I
get stuck in the login screen. If I choose the old kernel
3.8.0-31-generic, it works without any problem.

Sadly the dmesg has scrolled off the top by the time the log was taken.

I do not believe we will determine the cause, but it is most likely a
kernel issue.

Bug description:
I have been trying to install Karmic (20090917) over the network on a
Toshiba NB 200. It was so slow that I left it running overnight and
it's still not finished in the morning. The installation seems to be
stuck at installing base packages. I am attaching the syslog from the
  installer environment for more information.
