[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1596216] Re: Black screen on boot; no modeset workaround broken by 16.04
This issue IS NOT resolved by v4.7-rc6-yakkety/, nor is the nomodeset workaround restored. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1596216 Title: Black screen on boot; no modeset workaround broken by 16.04 Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: This bug appears to occur in several distros and architectures. On this machine, it appeared somewhere in the last week of January, 2016, after a system update. On boot, the laptop monitor often flickers several times (signal connecting and disconnecting) and always settles onto a full backlight back screen. The screen does not change after that. I found reports that adding nomodeset to the grub parameters would resolve the issue. It does, but the workaround has significant issues in 16.04. The nomodeset parameters conflict with both the amdgpu driver package and the radeon driver package. When the machine boots, it is in 800x600 resolution. While I can add new resolutions, attempting to switch to them with xrandr throws the error "configure crtc0 failed" ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 16.04 Package: linux-image-4.4.0-24-generic 4.4.0-24.43 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 4.4.0-24.43-generic 4.4.10 Uname: Linux 4.4.0-24-generic x86_64 ApportVersion: 2.20.1-0ubuntu2.1 Architecture: amd64 AudioDevicesInUse: USERPID ACCESS COMMAND /dev/snd/controlC1: jbhelfrich 2053 F pulseaudio /dev/snd/controlC0: jbhelfrich 2053 F pulseaudio CurrentDesktop: MATE Date: Sat Jun 25 14:49:22 2016 HibernationDevice: RESUME=UUID=51835e9e-6087-4108-af31-95e11fc3401c InstallationDate: Installed on 2015-10-30 (238 days ago) InstallationMedia: Ubuntu-MATE 15.04 "Vivid Vervet" - Release amd64 (20150422.1) MachineType: HP HP Pavilion Notebook ProcFB: 0 EFI VGA ProcKernelCmdLine: BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-4.4.0-24-generic.efi.signed root=UUID=613f6223-b665-4289-9dfa-7b003124dfdf ro quiet splash nomodeset i8042.dumbkbd=1 vt.handoff=7 RelatedPackageVersions: linux-restricted-modules-4.4.0-24-generic N/A linux-backports-modules-4.4.0-24-generic N/A linux-firmware1.157.1 SourcePackage: linux UpgradeStatus: Upgraded to xenial on 2016-06-24 (1 days ago) dmi.bios.date: 08/06/2015 dmi.bios.vendor: American Megatrends Inc. dmi.bios.version: F.13 dmi.board.asset.tag: Base Board Asset Tag dmi.board.name: 80AF dmi.board.vendor: HP dmi.board.version: 81.28 dmi.chassis.type: 10 dmi.chassis.vendor: HP dmi.chassis.version: Chassis Version dmi.modalias: dmi:bvnAmericanMegatrendsInc.:bvrF.13:bd08/06/2015:svnHP:pnHPPavilionNotebook:pvr:rvnHP:rn80AF:rvr81.28:cvnHP:ct10:cvrChassisVersion: dmi.product.name: HP Pavilion Notebook dmi.sys.vendor: HP To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1596216/+subscriptions -- Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~kernel-packages Post to : kernel-packages@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~kernel-packages More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1599306] Re: 16.04: i8042 need to start early after grub
Federico Leoni, could you please post the results of the following terminal command uncompressed/untarred: cat /proc/bus/input/devices ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed => Incomplete -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1599306 Title: 16.04: i8042 need to start early after grub Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: The kernel module i8042 need to start early after grub selection. I've upgrade my notebook (HP dv2700 series, model dv2910us) with an SSD and now I need to wait 15 seconds after LightDM show up before I can use the internal keyboard. On bios and on GRUB the keyboard works fine but stops working the exact moment the kernel starts to load. An USB external keyboard works fine with no delay at all (different module, I know). It's not related to the SSD because even on recovery mode I can reproduce the issue with an old mechanical disk. I hope this reaches someone who has any clue what's wrong) I have a USB HID joystick (professional grade rudder pedals) which are not properly recognized as joystick. Event device is created, but no /dev/input/jsX device node file. Other USB joysticks are recognized and proper node files are created, so I suppose this is a kernel issue. If not, could you point me to right direction? Here's all info I could dig out of the device. Tested on kernel 4.4.0-22-generic on Ubuntu 16.04. Richard Stabler, thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1005551] Re: update-grub-legacy-ec2 ignores kernels named -generic
** No longer affects: linux-lts-quantal (Ubuntu) ** No longer affects: linux-lts-quantal (Ubuntu Precise) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux-lts-quantal in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1005551 Title: update-grub-legacy-ec2 ignores kernels named -generic Status in cloud-init package in Ubuntu: Fix Released Status in cloud-init source package in Precise: Fix Released Bug description: == Begin SRU Information == [General Description] Amazon's EC2 is a xen based cloud platform, the bootloader that is used is 'pvgrub'. pvgrub runs inside a xen instance, reads a /boot/grub/menu.lst file, and loads the kernels specified there. It does not support grub2 style configuration (/boot/grub/grub.cfg). Thus, we have installed inside cloud-images, a package named 'grub-legacy-ec2' that maintains /boot/grub/menu.lst. grub-legacy-ec2 does not simply assume all kernels are candidates for inclusion in /boot/grub/menu.lst. Instead, it has some very basic whitelist metrics. Those previously required a kernel to end in '-virtual'. In the development cycle of 12.10, the -virtual kernel went away. It is now simply a -generic kernel with a subset of modules. [Impact] In 12.04, it is now supported to run a 12.10 "enablement kernel" (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/LTSEnablementStack). These new kernels will be named in the newer fashion, and will end in '-generic', rather than '-virtual'. As a result, grub-legacy-ec2's whitelist will not write entries for these kernels to /boot/grub/menu.lst. The end result is that the user who installs these kernels will not be able to easily boot them on EC2 (or other xen guest). [Test Case] * Boot a cloud instance or cloud image The daily build of a EC2 AMI id at http://cloud-images.ubuntu.com/server/precise/current/ is fine. * install a backports kernel sudo apt-get install linux-generic-lts-quantal * verify that kernel new kernel is included in /boot/grub/menu.lst Previously the kernel would not be included there. Previously: $ grep "3.5.[0-9]" /boot/grub/menu.lst || echo NOT_FOUND NOT_FOUND But with new update-grub, it will be. # enable proposed $ echo "deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu precise-proposed main" | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/proposed.list $ sudo apt-get update $ sudo apt-get install grub-legacy-ec2 $ sudo update-grub-legacy-ec2 $ grep "3.5.[0-9]" /boot/grub/menu.lst || echo NOT_FOUND titleUbuntu 12.04.2 LTS, kernel 3.5.0-24-generic kernel /boot/vmlinuz-3.5.0-24-generic root=LABEL=cloudimg-rootfs ro console=hvc0 ... [Regression Potential] The biggest potential for regression would be in writing an entry to /boot/grub/menu.lst for a kernel that would not boot. There is protection against this in the included patch by checking the version number as well as the name. That amounts to: dpkg --compare-versions ${ver_flavor%-generic} ge 3.4.0-3 && return 0;; where 'ver_flavor' is the version as found in the file name of the kernel (ie, /boot/vmlinux-2.6.35-13-generic). == End SRU Information == Quantal stopped booting on EC2 around 2012-05-25. ben@padfoot:~$ ec2-get-console-output -i i-75727213 Required parameter 'INSTANCE' missing (-h for usage) ben@padfoot:~$ ec2-get-console-output i-75727213 i-75727213 2012-05-28T14:17:49+ Xen Minimal OS! start_info: 0xb1(VA) nr_pages: 0x6a400 shared_inf: 0x001a5000(MA) pt_base: 0xb13000(VA) nr_pt_frames: 0x9 mfn_list: 0x967000(VA) mod_start: 0x0(VA) mod_len: 0 flags: 0x0 cmd_line: root=/dev/sda1 ro 4 stack: 0x946780-0x966780 MM: Init _text: 0x0(VA) _etext: 0x61e65(VA) _erodata: 0x76000(VA) _edata: 0x7b6d4(VA) stack start: 0x946780(VA) _end: 0x966d34(VA) start_pfn: b1f max_pfn: 6a400 Mapping memory range 0xc0 - 0x6a40 setting 0x0-0x76000 readonly skipped 0x1000 MM: Initialise page allocator for e6c000(e6c000)-0(6a40) MM: done Demand map pfns at 6a401000-7a401000. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1553427] Re: [LENOVO S10-3] suspend/resume failure
Thank you so much for following up! :) Unfortunately, the client needed to have a computer so I no longer have any access to the machine. Maybe someone else in the world has this netbook and would be able to do testing. Semi-work-around: Using policies i disabled the use of suspend. It is now configured to turn off the LCD display when the lid is closed but not suspend. Hopefully this will help others. Thank you all for your help and working the problem. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1568341] Re: Boot hangs at: /scripts/local-premount/uswsusp
same thing here with Ubuntu Mate 16.04. just installed package 'hibernate' which i guess pulled in uswusp. i didnt see this mentioned previously but if i wait out the script it eventually returns: resume: could not stat the resume device file '/dev/disk/by-uuid/(some uuid hex)' please type in the full path name to try again or press enter to boot the system: so was able to get into the system eventually by pressing enter. this happened to be when i had selected recovery mode in grub. but other times the script never ended before i gave up and reset machine. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1568341 Title: Boot hangs at: /scripts/local-premount/uswsusp Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Triaged Bug description: When booting Ubuntu kernels 4.4.0-16 through 4.4.0-18 (either by default or upstart), it hangs during boot noting as per the attached screenshot: Begin: Running /scripts/local-premount ... [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1357090] Re: Black screen on resume in Xubuntu 14.04.1
This solution works on my laptop (ubuntu 16.04, but should work on previous OS): open as root file /etc/UPower/UPower.conf and change IgnoreLid=false ==> IgnoreLid=true save changes, restart system and now it works :-) You can remove light-locker now. You can use bash for these: sudo sed -i -e 's/IgnoreLid=false/IgnoreLid=true/g' /etc/UPower/UPower.conf sudo apt-get remove --purge -y light-locker light-locker-settings -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1357090 Title: Black screen on resume in Xubuntu 14.04.1 Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Expired Bug description: It seems #1303736 is Not fixed. Black screen on resume when using standby on close lid is confirmed on Dell Latitude D400 on completely new install of Xubuntu 14.04.1 32 bit. downloaded 14 Aug from repository as a .ISO image. This despite claims to the contrary on the website. http://xubuntu.org/news/xubuntu-14-04-1-released/ pointing to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xubuntu-default- settings/+bug/1303736 Using the "Suspend" key results in correct operation, i.e. the laptop suspends and resumes correctly on lid open. Suspending by closing the laptop lid results in the black screen when re-opening. Once in black screen mode, the only recourse is power off re-boot. Although power manager is set correctly to "Suspend" in the power manager , on closing the lid the system does NOT appear to suspend as it does when the "Log-off Suspend" button is clicked or the hardware "Suspend" key is pressed i.e. the problem APPEARS to be on lid close. Power manager and light-locker set NOT to lock on suspend or shutdown makes no difference to behaviour. Xubuntu up to 12.04.4 (plus latest updates) worked absolutely correctly before new install of 14.04.1 This is a MAJOR inconvenience for an upgrade of an LTS. I have this issue with an MK710 on Ubuntu 15.10 Glad there is a fix. Sorry I am not clear. Re: [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1584284] Re: Ubuntu 16.04 LiveCD does not boot on AMD A10 chip
I had to download and burn a new image from Ubuntu, because I had thrown out the original disk I used several months ago. I got the "ubuntu-16.04-desktop-amd64.iso" from the regular download page. On the grub menu I selected the entry, "*Try Ubuntu without installing." I removed the quiet and splash keywords, and changed the entry "set gfxpayload=keep" to "gfxpayload=text". Ctrl+x did not work, so I pressed F10 to boot. Nothing at all. No output. After about 20 seconds the screen changed to an even darker black and a few seconds later I got the "no signal" message from the monitor. I also tried booting without editing the command line, and the behavior was exactly the same. I also get the same behavior from the latest versions of Linux Mint Cinnamon and Peppermint Linux, which are based on Ubuntu 16.04. Just out of curiosity I'm going to see if I can download the current version of FreeBSD (which used to be my preferred *nix) and see if it will boot. At this point none of the other Linux distributions I've tried have worked. On Sat, Jul 9, 2016 at 7:25 AM, Christopher M. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1599599] Re: System beep broken (again) in Xenial Xerus
Logging in as Guest has a much higher beep success rate: 8 out of 9 boots succeeded. This also worked 4 out of 5 times on my initially reported machine with 4.4.0-28-generic. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1599599 Title: System beep broken (again) in Xenial Xerus Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: This is my first ever bug report, so bear with me if I make mistakes. System bell (aka PC speaker beep) is not working upon installing Ubuntu 16.04 Xenial Xerus. The "beep" command has been installed and works, also "echo foo | wall" works. But "echo -e '\a'" and "printf '\a'" make no sound, nor does pressing the rubout or other keys in terminal and Gedit like it usually does. lsmod shows pcspkr is loaded Note The symptoms are exactly the same as in bug #486154 https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-lts-xenial/+bug/486154 Just for the record, rmmod and reloading the pcspkr module, unblacklisting it, trying in vain to turn up the volume, and all the other usual steps are no longer relevant at this point. We are way beyond that here. Something very, very elusive in this 16.04 distro is blocking the bell. I suspect something new in 16.04 runs after you login which nullifies the standard error beep. Pressing down at the end in Gedit and the terminal also used to make the beep, but something is telling it not to anymore. The PC speaker works of course, as the alternative beep command and "echo foo | wall" prove. Interestingly, Ubuntu can and does produce the system beep in two other instances: 1) Edit the grub menu at /etc/default /grub and remove the # hash at GRUB_INIT_TUNE="480 440 1" and you will get a beep when grub loads. 2) Press Backspace without entering your password at login, and you will get the error beep. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1591521] Re: Kernel Does not recognize some USB 3.0 hard drives
Update : Still working this ... it is taking longer than I had hoped. I feel like a dummy but I am having issues building the older kernels from git. The 4.4.13 and the 4.7rc6 built and ran, no problem but during the bisect building the 3.13.0-24.47 to 3.15.0-1.3 kernels have been an issue. Using an Ubuntu 16.04 base OS, the kernel Makefile needed to be changed, setting CC=gcc-4.8, or it would not compile, complaining about gcc5 header files missing. after changing the makefile, it then built ok but when the .deb kernel- image packages are installed and the system rebooted the OS dies immediately after grub loading initramfs, with a message from the vm manager saying the host os has disabled the cpu. I then tried rebuilding on an older (slower!) 14.04 machine and that worked, built and ran fine if i scp'd .deb's over to the VM and tested. Now the bisect has brought me to 3.15 and the debian/rules folder has been deleted, which is what I was using here : https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/BuildYourOwnKernel I am now looking at this : https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/GitKernelBuild which doesn't require the debian/ folder. Any suggestions?, I am going about this the correct way? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1591521 Title: Kernel Does not recognize some USB 3.0 hard drives Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: Running Ubuntu 16,04 in VMware Fusion on an Apple Mac Book Pro, when connecting a USB 3.0 external drive it does not mount. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1588637] Re: iwlwifi: Microcode SW error detected. Restarting 0x2000000
I didn't manage to bisect the commits because every version failed to build. Then I started from 4.1.0-1 and reverted commits with "iwlwifi" in the title. http://kernel.ubuntu.com/git/ubuntu/ubuntu- wily.git/commit/?id=8d193ca26cc28019e760b77830295a0c349d90dc seems to be the culprit. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1438510] Re: [REGRESSION] bluetooth headset no longer supports a2dp
Updated procedure for comment #35, allowing to install more easily Debian Testinf pulseaudio package on Ubunutu 16.04. 1. Stop pulseaudio. Then, backup and purge pulseudio user conf files. 2. Install pulseaudio Debian Testing (June 2016) packages over Ubuntu pulseaudio packages. This will appear as a kind of downgrade. See get-pulseaudio8-debian-amd64.sh script. If you use pulseaudio-module-x11 too, use the corresponding Debian Testing version too to satisfy dependencies. 3. Restart. 4. A2DP profile should now work as expected with the default BlueZ, pulseaudio configuration. Use pavucontrol to select A2DP profile if needed. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to bluez in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1438510 Title: [REGRESSION] bluetooth headset no longer supports a2dp Status in PulseAudio: Unknown Status in bluez package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in pulseaudio package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in bluez source package in Vivid: Won't Fix Status in pulseaudio source package in Vivid: Won't Fix Bug description: Just installed 15.04 fresh from the latest ISO (beta2). I'm bummed to see my bluetooth headset (Bose Soundlink overear) seems to have regressed in functionality. In 14.10, I was able to set the output profile either to a2dp or hsp/hfp (telephony duplex). In 15.04, it only works in telephony duplex mode. I can't get high fidelity sound playback to work at all. This thread seems to be related, though the workaround within did not solve the problem for me: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=194006 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/pulseaudio/+bug/1438510/+subscriptions -- Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~kernel-packages Post to : kernel-packages@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~kernel-packages More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
