Need Alps upstream their new touchpad driver

Status in HWE Next:
  New
Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Some newer Alps touchpad isn't supported by current kernel therefore
recognized as PS/2 mouse and lost some key functions.

  From debug message we saw:
  alps_rpt_cmd: psmouse serio1: alps: E6 report: 00 00 64
  alps_rpt_cmd: psmouse serio1: alps: E7 report: 73 03 28

alps_identify: psmouse serio1: alps: Likely not an ALPS touchpad: E7=73 03
28, EC=73 01 13

which is different with some Alps bugs reported before.

Though we've already got drivers from Alps but it's not yet
upstreamed, this bug is opened for tracking this issue.

Bug description:
We've found on some Apollo Lake system stalls for around 4 seconds on
function `wait_for_completion` when creating nodes in devtmpfs. With
70+ nodes created it can be stalled for 5+ minutes when booting.

With bisecting we've found the patch can fix this issue:

  commit 0905f04eb21fc1c2e690bed5d0418a061d56c225

sched/fair: Fix new task's load avg removed from source CPU in
  wake_up_new_task()

This patch can be clean picked, and shows positive result on multiple
Apollo Lake system. The patch is already in v4.5+ so Yakkety is not
  affected.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1619918] Re: lsattr 32bit does not work on 64bit kernel (Inappropriate ioctl error)

2016-12-04 Thread Rolf Leggewie
You know, it's getting to be somewhat annoying. I have very limited
bandwidth here. Why don't you back out the patch already until a proper
solution is found? I will happily continue to test but as you can see
it does take me some time. The test case is pretty clear, why can you
not be bothered to test yourself?

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1510570] Re: BLE pairing fail

2016-12-04 Thread Júlio Maranhão
I made the same as #25 and I got the following:

1) the following dmesg error desappeared. The BT controller is an internal usb
device.
[ 17.566030] usb 2-6: device descriptor read/64, error -110

2) M$ Bluetooth Mobile Mouse 3600 works. I removed any traces of it with
bluetoothctl and I started a new setup only with GUI. Left/right clicks,
movement and scroll (up/down/left/right) tested.

So #25 solved my problem. My M$ mouse 3600 now works with xenial.

Status in bluez package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
On 15.10 we now have bluez 5 so we can pair BLE devices like the

But this pairing doesn't work very well. Mouse is seen but pairing fail.
  More information: https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=104011#c5

This is due to udev rule that use "hcitool" to power on device.
Hopefully, bluez 5.35 has a new parameter "AutoEnable" who can be used
instead of udev rules.

here is a commit with this parameter:
http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~guilhem-fr/bluez/autoenable/revision/138
And a ppa to test it:

2016-12-04 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Looks like it's the Intel i915 kernel module crashing. So that's the
'linux' kernel package.

** Package changed: xorg (Ubuntu) => linux (Ubuntu)

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1630063] Re: specific USB devices disconnect and don't reconnect

2016-12-04 Thread Scott Cowles Jacobs
I just (yesterday?) installed Linux 4.8.0-29.31
"Release Tracking Bug
- LP: #1646194

  * Yakkety update to v4.8.11 stable release (LP: #1645421)"

and for the first time since I installed Lubuntu 16.10, I can print, and have
the whole
page get printed!

This seems to have fixed the problem.

>From the changelog:

"usb: increase ohci watchdog delay to 275 msec"

Thank you, "Bryan P (bryanpaluch)" (and anyone else who might have been
involved in getting this issue cleared up) !!!

Title:
specific USB devices disconnect and don't reconnect

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  In Progress
Status in linux source package in Yakkety:
  In Progress

Bug description:
2 USB ports randomly disconnect and don't reconnect (it's always the
same two), and in dmesg all I get is

  "
  [ 1276.916458] ohci-pci :00:12.0: HcDoneHead not written back; disabled
  [ 1276.916467] ohci-pci :00:12.0: HC died; cleaning up
  [ 1276.916553] usb 3-1: USB disconnect, device number 2
  [ 1277.017302] usb 3-2: USB disconnect, device number 3
  "
This only started happening when Yakkety went to the 4.8 branch, with 4.7
branch this doesn't occur, hence the bug report since it's unlikely that a
hardware failure will only stick to one OS and one branch of the kernel for
that OS. (these USB ports don't randomly die on Windows or BSD, I've tested
that in the past couple of days)

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1602888] Re: Dell Inspiron 7559 fans do not shut off once started, even when cool

2016-12-04 Thread Peter
@All:
This is a current script for powertop tunables which I am running after reboot.

All commands above the line # FANS OFF!!! are so far needed to get the fans
working (including setup I've mentioned in my post #64)
You can play and sort out which are really needed to get the fans working as
they are supposed to work.

Title:
Dell Inspiron 7559 fans do not shut off once started, even when cool

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
Running Ubuntu 16.04 on a Dell Inspiron 7559 laptop there appears to
be an issue with the fan control. When I first boot up the machine the
fans are off. However, after the laptop warms up under normal usage,
the fans kick on and then never shut off again. Even when the CPU
cools down to below 35c, the fans will continue to run.

If I suspend the the laptop, and then immediately wake it up again
then fans are once again off, until it warms up again. So
essentially, once the fans start they don't seem to ever shut off.

Fans seem to work normally under Windows 10. They turn on as needed,
and then turn off once the laptop cools down.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1602888] Re: Dell Inspiron 7559 fans do not shut off once started, even when cool

2016-12-04 Thread Peter
@Alex:
yes after using those 2 commands I could get PC3 package state, but it seems
that this didn't help with the fans problem. I had to set more tunables to good
to get them working (I'm trying to investigate which are really needed to be
set to Good, but it would take some time). Btw, I do not even know if it is
possible to get deeper state than PC3 on this laptop.

Bug description:
Since I have updated to Ubuntu 16.10 (from 16.04) I have this problem
where the shutdown takes a long time (~30s) and ends with a (at least
I think it is) kernel panic with blinking harddrive- and battery
status LEDs. Nothing is visible on the screen.

This didnt happen on Ubuntu 16.04 so I tried installing a 4.4 kernel
  and the problem disappeared.

I have then tested with various kernels from http://kernel.ubuntu.com
/~kernel-ppa/mainline/ and I have found that the last good kernel is
4.7.10 and the first bad kernel is 4.8-rc1.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1602888] Re: Dell Inspiron 7559 fans do not shut off once started, even when cool

2016-12-04 Thread Alex Ivanov
@Peter I see your deepest package level is PC3. On your model if you
don't touch tunables, but instead do below commands (this puts SATA
controller in a low power mode):

echo min_power > /sys/class/scsi_host/host0/link_power_management_policy
echo min_power > /sys/class/scsi_host/host1/link_power_management_policy

are you able to reach PC3?

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1602888] Re: Dell Inspiron 7559 fans do not shut off once started, even when cool

2016-12-04 Thread Peter
@lpturoyo:

- I have BIOS 1.2.0
- Installed Kernel 4.8.11-040811-generic or later
- I have installed nvidia binary driver 375.20 - switched to intel gpu in
NVIDIA X Server setting - Prime profiles
- reboot and boot with grub parameter acpi_osi="!Windows 2015" (i've replaced
quiet splash)
Then after boot install powertop, run it and in Tunables section set all
tunables to good - except the USB ones (see my powertop attachment)

I've tried the various BIOS updates that Dell has released, without
success. I am currently running Dell's latest BIOS for this laptop
  (v1.1.8)

Below is the output of lm-sensors showing the fans running when the

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1609613] Re: microsoft mouse BluetoothMouse3600 is not work

2016-12-04 Thread Júlio Maranhão
This bug seems to be included (duplicate?) in #1510570.

The following seems to solve my problem:

1) remove /lib/udev/rules.d/50-bluetooth-hci-auto-poweron.rules

2) change /etc/bluetooth/main.conf: uncomment [Policy] and uncomment/set
AutoEnable=true

The dmesg error also desappeared:
[ 17.566030] usb 2-6: device descriptor read/64, error -110

--

#1510570 is much more actively commented and there are other "solutions"
I did not tried. Maybe the above one is not the correct one, so stay
tuned with #1510570. But after many reboots, connects and disconnects I
am just happy with the result. M$ mouse 3600 works on xenial.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1633839] Re: No symbol table. Press any key to continue

2016-12-04 Thread Ernst Zlo
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1620678 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1620678

I had a CLEAN INSTALL on a NEW formatted partition (with gparted) and ran into
the same problem
Only special thing on my system is, that /home is on an extra partition.

(in the german Version instead of ""error: no symbol table. Press any
key to continue..." on can see "FEHLER: KEINE SYMBOLTABELLE. DRÜCKEN SIE
EINE TASTE... [adding the text that German speaking users find this on
search engines]

Solution of Alex N. worked for me: (LÖSUNG:)

sudo grub-install /dev/sda
sudo update-grub
sudo reboot

no number after /dev/sda ! (KEINE ZAHL nach /dev/sda !)

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1530405] Re: NMI watchdog: BUG: soft lockup - CPU#0 stuck for 22s! [kerneloops:814]

2016-12-04 Thread Roberto Longobardi
I am affected with 16.04, kernel 4.4.0-51-generic.

The only way I could make my system work has been to install initial
Ubuntu 16.04 and not upgrade any single package since installation.

I used to have hangs even before login, so I enabled auto-login without
password and things got better.

I still have lockups during shutdown, so I need to hard-shutdown the PC
every time, but at least the working sessions go smooth.

My system is an ASUS K550V, Intel Core i7-6700HQ, NVIDIA Geforce GTX
950M.

Title:
Tunnel offload indications not stripped from encapsulated packets,
  causing performance overhead

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Committed
Status in linux source package in Xenial:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  Commit:

https://git.kernel.org/cgit/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/commit?id=a09a4c8dd1ec7f830e1fb9e59eb72bddc965d168

  Description:

tunnels: Remove encapsulation offloads on decap.

If a packet is either locally encapsulated or processed through GRO
it is marked with the offloads that it requires. However, when it is
decapsulated these tunnel offload indications are not removed. This
means that if we receive an encapsulated TCP packet, aggregate it with
GRO, decapsulate, and retransmit the resulting frame on a NIC that does
not support encapsulation, we won't be able to take advantage of hardware
offloads even though it is just a simple TCP packet at this point.

This fixes the problem by stripping off encapsulation offload indications
  when packets are decapsulated.

The performance impacts of this bug are significant. In a test where a
Geneve encapsulated TCP stream is sent to a hypervisor, GRO'ed, decapsulated,
and bridged to a VM performance is improved by 60% (5Gbps->8Gbps) as a
result of avoiding unnecessary segmentation at the VM tap interface.

  Reported-by: Ramu Ramamurthy
Fixes: 68c33163 ("v4 GRE: Add TCP segmentation offload for GRE")
  Signed-off-by: Jesse Gross
  Signed-off-by: David S. Miller
