[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1652242] Re: Kernel security test for CVE-2016-9793 still fail with proposed Yakkety 4.8.0-34 kernel

2016-12-26 Thread Steve Beattie
This was due to the test expecting a negative value to return an error
on the setsockopt() call, rather than just applying the minimum. I've
now corrected the test in the qa-r-t tree in https://git.launchpad.net
/qa-regression-
testing/commit/?id=2ffdf26fe003ac99cf7a457a689ebe5d6afbbafe and
confirmed that the kernel in yakkety-proposed passes the test while the
current kernel in yakkety-updates still fails it.

Thanks.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1617686] Re: Kernel 4.4.0-34 caused Redshift/Flux/brightness-controller etc. to stop working

I tested and found 4.4.0-34 has this issue, but from 4.4.0-36 and up,
the issue no longer exist. Ji Xiang, can you confirm this?

Title:
  Kernel 4.4.0-34 caused Redshift/Flux/brightness-controller etc. to
  stop working

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  As per reported by several users, such as in
  https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=298, apps that control
  screen gamma, such as Redshift/Flux/brightness-controller, stopped
  working under the newest kernel 4.4.0-34 in Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, and
  we're not sure what caused the issue.

  Those apps are still working well on external monitors. It's just the
  internal monitor that is not responsive. Any setting just simply has
  no effect.

  It seems that all the users are using Skylake-based laptop.

  In my case, my laptop is on Skylake and GTX980M.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1652348] Re: initrd dhcp fails / ignores valid response

2016-12-26 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Paul Graydon, the next step is to fully reverse commit bisect from
kernel 4.4 to 4.10-rc1 in order to identify the last bad commit,
followed immediately by the first good one. Once this good commit has
been identified, it may be reviewed for backporting. Could you please do
this following

?

Please note, finding adjacent kernel versions, or providing a commit
from a kernel version bisect is not fully commit bisecting.

Also, the kernel release names are irrelevant for the purposes of
bisecting.

It is most helpful that after the fix commit (not kernel version) has
been identified, you then mark this report Status Confirmed.

Thank you for your help.

Title:
  initrd dhcp fails / ignores valid response

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  Between kernel versions 4.4.0-53 and 4.4.0-57 a bug has been
  (re?)introduced that is breaking dhcp booting in the initrd
  environment. This is stopping instances that use iscsi storage from
  being able to connect.

  Over serial console it outputs:

  IP-Config: no response after 2 secs - giving up
  IP-Config: ens2f0 hardware address 90:e2:ba:d1:36:38 mtu 1500 DHCP RARP
  IP-Config: ens2f1 hardware address 90:e2:ba:d1:36:39 mtu 1500 DHCP RARP
  IP-Config: no response after 3 secs - giving up

  with increasing delays until it fails. At which point a simple
  ipconfig -t dhcp -d "ens2f0" works. The console output is slightly
  garbled but should give you an idea:

  (initramfs) ipconfig -t dhcp -[  728.379793] ixgbe :13:00.0 ens2f0:
changing MTU from 1500 to 9000
  d "ens2f0"
  IP-Config: ens2f0 hardware address 90:e2:ba:d1:36:38 mtu 1500 DHCP RARP
  IP-Config: ens2f0 guessed broadcast address 10.0.1.255
  IP-Config: ens2f0 complete (dhcp from 169.254.169.254):
   addres[  728.980448] ixgbe :13:00.0 ens2f0: detected SFP+: 3
  s: 10.0.1.56broadcast: 10.0.1.255   netmask: 255.255.255.0
   gateway: 10.0.1.1   [  729.148410] ixgbe :13:00.0 ens2f0: NIC Link is Up
10 Gbps, Flow Control: RX/TX
dns0 : 169.254.169.254  dns1   : 0.0.0.0
   rootserver: 169.254.169.254 rootpath:
   filename  : /ipxe.efi

  tcpdumps show that dhcp requests are being received from the host, and
responses sent, but not accepted by the host. When the ipconfig command is
issued manually, an identical dhcp request and response happens, only this time
it is accepted. It doesn't appear to be that the messages are being sent and
received incorrectly, just silently ignored by ipconfig.

  I was seeing this behaviour earlier this year, which I was able to fix
  by specifying "ip=dhcp" as a kernel parameter. About a month ago that
  was identified as causing us other problems (long story) and we
  dropped it, at which point we discovered the original bug was no
  longer an issue.

  Putting "ip=dhcp" back on with this kernel no longer fixes the
  problem.

  I've compared the two initrds and effectively the only thing that has
  changed between the two is the kernel components.

  I'm going to try and track back through kernel versions to see if I
  can find which version the fix happened in to maybe provide some
  additional context. I'll also attach copies of the initrds, packet
  captures etc.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1641322] Re: frequently lost connection to nvme

2016-12-26 Thread Thomas M Steenholdt
Okay,

Since updating the BIOS of my Lenovo T460s laptop from version 1.15 to
1.20, I've not seen this issue once.

Since I've not been able to successfully reproduce the error at any
point, I can't say for sure that the problem is gone. It has been a
weeks time, however, which is certainly a first.

I'm happy to close this bug at this time, marking it a hardware/firmware
issue.

/Thomas

  For whatever reason, I sometimes (often) loose connection to the
  device, causing the entire system to stop working until a powercycle
  has been completed. I can go a full day without having the problem -
  Just as I can have an entire night of the system just refusing to be
  stable for long enough to be usable.

  I've tried with official kernels and mainline kernels of 4.8 and 4.9
  versions of the kernel, but all show the exact same problem at one

  I'm aware that this COULD be a hardware-related issue, but have no
  real way to be certain at this point. The system is a brand new Lenovo

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1652348] Re: initrd dhcp fails / ignores valid response

2016-12-26 Thread Paul Graydon
Tried and tested (the current up-to-date kernels at the time of
posting):

http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.10-rc1/linux-
headers-4.10.0-041000rc1-generic_4.10.0-041000rc1.201612252031_amd64.deb

image-4.10.0-041000rc1-generic_4.10.0-041000rc1.201612252031_amd64.deb

They do not appear to suffer from the bug, dhcp was able to complete
happily via the startup scripts in the initrd environment, and the host
booted successfully.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1652662] Re: linux kernel v4.10-rc1 systematically fails to boot : Kernel panic exitcode 9

2016-12-26 Thread Etienne URBAH
Since linux kernel v4.10-rc1 systematically fails to boot, I can NOT run
'apport-collect' under linux kernel v4.10-rc1.

But, with Linux kernel 4.9.0, I have already obtained and attached
'lspci-vvnn.log', and, with precise instructions, I am able to obtain
and attach further information about my hardware.

back to mine user again - then the screen goes blank. Here is the tail:

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1652644] [NEW] Switching users in Ubuntu/Ubuntu Gnome freezes graphics

2016-12-26 Thread Vidar Hoel
Public bug reported:

This bug was present in Ubuntu Gnome 16.04 LTS with GDM, but did a clean
install of Ubutnu 16.04 LTS with Unity and LightDM, and the bug is still
present.

How to reproduce:
1. Boot the system, wait for LightDM to start and show the Ubuntu Unity greeter.
2. Log in as a user.
3. From the power menu (top right), choose an other user
4. In the password-promt (greeter) for the user, type in the correct password

At this point, one of three thing might happen:
a- The desktop, desktop icons, Unity-launcher and main menu for the user is
loaded. The user can use the system as expected!
b- The desktop, desktop icons and Unity-launcher the user is loaded. However,
just before the main-menu-bar at the tops loads, the the graphics freezes. I
can move the cursor, but that's it. It is not possible to click or do anything
with the mouse-cursor.
c- Same as (b), but during this process the screen goes complete blank (black),
with only the cursor showing (and moving).

When (b) or (c), pressing ALT+F1-F6 does not help, the screen just stays
the same (except the cursor dispersers). Pressing ALT+F7 afterwards does
not bring the cursor back.

The system has not frozen. I can SSH to the box and it lives as nothing
has happened. It's only effecting the display/graphics.

This bug happens about 1/3 of the times I switch the user. Sometimes I
can switch to and from users several times (2-5) before this bug comes
to life.

Title:
  Switching users in Ubuntu/Ubuntu Gnome freezes graphics

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  This bug was present in Ubuntu Gnome 16.04 LTS with GDM, but did a
  clean install of Ubutnu 16.04 LTS with Unity and LightDM, and the bug
  is still present.

  How to reproduce:
  1. Boot the system, wait for LightDM to start and show the Ubuntu Unity
greeter.

It is not possible to click or do anything
with the mouse-cursor.
  c- Same as (b), but during this process the screen goes complete blank
(black), with only the cursor showing (and moving).

  When (b) or (c), pressing ALT+F1-F6 does not help, the screen just
  stays the same (except the cursor dispersers). Pressing ALT+F7
  afterwards

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1554613] Re: Screen flickers on XPS 13 9350/9550 (Intel Skylake/Broadwell GPU)

2016-12-26 Thread Michel-Ekimia
I can happily confirm that this does not occur anymore on Ubuntu 16.04 (
kernel 4.4) .

  Screen flickers on XPS 13 9350/9550 (Intel Skylake/Broadwell GPU)

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  *** Temporary workaround ***
  Install Kernel from the following location:
  - http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.6-yakkety/

  OR
  Perform the following:
  - $ apt-add-repository "deb

  - $ echo -en "Package: *\nPin: release

  - $ apt install linux-image-extra-4.6.0-6-generic
linux-headers-4.6.0-6-generic linux-tools-4.6.0-6-generic
  ```
  There was a typo in instructions (/etc/preferences.d should have been
/etc/apt/preferences.d).
  As result you might have upgraded Linux META packages and therefor you won't
receive proper upgrades of Xenial native Linux packages (hoping they will ever
contain the fix).
  I suggest you move
/etc/preferences.d/canonical-kernel-team-ubuntu-ppa-yakkety to
/etc/apt/preferences.d/ and downgrade related packages:
  $ apt update
  $ apt install linux-headers-generic/xenial-updates
[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1651981] Re: shaking screen
2016-12-26 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Adrian, the next step is to fully commit bisect from kernel
4.8.0-30-generic to 4.8.0-32-generic in order to identify the last good
kernel commit, followed immediately by the first bad one. This will
allow for a more expedited analysis of the root cause of your issue.
Could you please do this following
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/KernelBisection ?
Please note, finding adjacent kernel versions, or providing a commit
from a kernel version bisect is not fully commit bisecting.
Also, the kernel release names are irrelevant for the purposes of
bisecting.
It is most helpful that after the fix commit (not kernel version) has
been identified, you then mark this report Status Confirmed.
Thank you for your help.
[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1651830] Re: Intel HD Graphics 520 lagging after kernel upgrade
2016-12-26 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Frank, it's always best for security and bug fixes to keep the BIOS
current, as an outdated BIOS can cause various OS related issues, and
exposes your computer to security vulnerabilities. For help on updating,
please see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BIOSUpdate .
Once it is updated, please provide the output of the following terminal command
(not perform an apport-collect):
sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date
Title:
  Intel HD Graphics 520 lagging after kernel upgrade
Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete
Bug description:
  After upgrading to kernel version 4.4.0-53 on a clean install of
  Lubuntu, I have experienced a persistent problem where the desktop
  graphics (or any graphics when not using tty 1 to 6) appear to lag or
  freeze every 1 to 2 seconds for between 0.5 to 1 second.  During the
  freezes, no mouse input is recorded, and most keyboard input is lost.
  I'm fairly sure this is a kernel issue, as booting with kernel
  4.4.0-31 fixes the issue.  This problem is also present in 4.4.0-57.
  I am using a Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon with integrated Intel graphics,
  which aren't the most powerful (they couldn't handle Unity, hence
  Lubunut).  I am running Lubuntu 16.04 LTS, though I have tried a clean
  install (from the .iso) of Lubuntu 16.10, and this but still appears.
  The laptop has a4 core i5-6200U processor (2.3 GHz), 8 Gigs of RAM,
  and Intel HD Graphics 520 (Skylake)
  This does not appear to be a thermal issue, or a processor speed issue
  (the problem persists weather speed step is enabled in the bios or
  not), though my testing with processor speed step and kernel
  performance settings (performance/power save) was at best amateur.
[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1651830] Re: Intel HD Graphics 520 lagging after kernel upgrade
2016-12-26 Thread Frank
Cheers for the reply Christopher
I have tested the mainline version 4.10-rc1 kernel, and unfortunately it
did not fix the issue.
I will continue to test as I notice new builds.
I also didn't realise that my bios was outdated.  While I'd like to
upgrade, would it help this bug to keep my current bios version?
Thanks
Title:
  Intel HD Graphics 520 lagging after kernel upgrade
Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Bug description:
  After upgrading to kernel version 4.4.0-53 on a clean install of
  Lubuntu, I have experienced a persistent problem where the desktop
  graphics (or any graphics when not using tty 1 to 6) appear to lag or
  freeze every 1 to 2 seconds for between 0.5 to 1 second.  During the
  freezes, no mouse input is recorded, and most keyboard input is lost.
  I'm fairly sure this is a kernel issue, as booting with kernel
  4.4.0-31 fixes the issue.  This problem is also present in 4.4.0-57.
  I am using a Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon with integrated Intel graphics,
  which aren't the most powerful (they couldn't handle Unity, hence
  Lubunut).  I am running Lubuntu 16.04 LTS, though I have tried a clean
  install (from the .iso) of Lubuntu 16.10, and this but still appears.
  The laptop has a4 core i5-6200U processor (2.3 GHz), 8 Gigs of RAM,
  and Intel HD Graphics 520 (Skylake)
  This does not appear to be a thermal issue, or a processor speed issue
  (the problem persists weather speed step is enabled in the bios or
  not), though my testing with processor speed step and kernel
  performance settings (performance/power save) was at best amateur.
