[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1652242] Re: Kernel security test for CVE-2016-9793 still fail with proposed Yakkety 4.8.0-34 kernel
This was due to the test expecting a negative value to return an error on the setsockopt() call, rather than just applying the minimum. I've now corrected the test in the qa-r-t tree in https://git.launchpad.net /qa-regression- testing/commit/?id=2ffdf26fe003ac99cf7a457a689ebe5d6afbbafe and confirmed that the kernel in yakkety-proposed passes the test while the current kernel in yakkety-updates still fails it. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1652348] Re: initrd dhcp fails / ignores valid response
Paul Graydon, the next step is to fully reverse commit bisect from kernel 4.4 to 4.10-rc1 in order to identify the last bad commit, followed immediately by the first good one. Once this good commit has been identified, it may be reviewed for backporting. Could you please do this following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/KernelBisection#How_do_I_reverse_bisect_the_upstream_kernel.3F ? Please note, finding adjacent kernel versions, or providing a commit from a kernel version bisect is not fully commit bisecting. Also, the kernel release names are irrelevant for the purposes of bisecting. It is most helpful that after the fix commit (not kernel version) has been identified, you then mark this report Status Confirmed. Thank you for your help. ** Tags added: needs-reverse-bisect ** Tags added: regression-update ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed => Incomplete -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1652348 Title: initrd dhcp fails / ignores valid response Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: Between kernel versions 4.4.0-53 and 4.4.0-57 a bug has been (re?)introduced that is breaking dhcp booting in the initrd environment. This is stopping instances that use iscsi storage from being able to connect. Over serial console it outputs: IP-Config: no response after 2 secs - giving up IP-Config: ens2f0 hardware address 90:e2:ba:d1:36:38 mtu 1500 DHCP RARP IP-Config: ens2f1 hardware address 90:e2:ba:d1:36:39 mtu 1500 DHCP RARP IP-Config: no response after 3 secs - giving up with increasing delays until it fails. At which point a simple ipconfig -t dhcp -d "ens2f0" works. The console output is slightly garbled but should give you an idea: (initramfs) ipconfig -t dhcp -[ 728.379793] ixgbe :13:00.0 ens2f0: changing MTU from 1500 to 9000 d "ens2f0" IP-Config: ens2f0 hardware address 90:e2:ba:d1:36:38 mtu 1500 DHCP RARP IP-Config: ens2f0 guessed broadcast address 10.0.1.255 IP-Config: ens2f0 complete (dhcp from 169.254.169.254): addres[ 728.980448] ixgbe :13:00.0 ens2f0: detected SFP+: 3 s: 10.0.1.56broadcast: 10.0.1.255 netmask: 255.255.255.0 gateway: 10.0.1.1 [ 729.148410] ixgbe :13:00.0 ens2f0: NIC Link is Up 10 Gbps, Flow Control: RX/TX dns0 : 169.254.169.254 dns1 : 0.0.0.0 rootserver: 169.254.169.254 rootpath: filename : /ipxe.efi tcpdumps show that dhcp requests are being received from the host, and responses sent, but not accepted by the host. When the ipconfig command is issued manually, an identical dhcp request and response happens, only this time it is accepted. It doesn't appear to be that the messages are being sent and received incorrectly, just silently ignored by ipconfig. I was seeing this behaviour earlier this year, which I was able to fix by specifying "ip=dhcp" as a kernel parameter. About a month ago that was identified as causing us other problems (long story) and we dropped it, at which point we discovered the original bug was no longer an issue. Putting "ip=dhcp" back on with this kernel no longer fixes the problem. I've compared the two initrds and effectively the only thing that has changed between the two is the kernel components. I'm going to try and track back through kernel versions to see if I can find which version the fix happened in to maybe provide some additional context. I'll also attach copies of the initrds, packet captures etc. To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1652348/+subscriptions -- Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~kernel-packages Post to : kernel-packages@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~kernel-packages More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1641322] Re: frequently lost connection to nvme
Okay, Since updating the BIOS of my Lenovo T460s laptop from version 1.15 to 1.20, I've not seen this issue once. Since I've not been able to successfully reproduce the error at any point, I can't say for sure that the problem is gone. It has been a weeks time, however, which is certainly a first. I'm happy to close this bug at this time, marking it a hardware/firmware issue. /Thomas -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1641322 Title: frequently lost connection to nvme Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: Since before the release of Yakkety Yak, I've been having problems with a new laptop with a Samsung nvme device: 05:00.0 Non-Volatile memory controller: Samsung Electronics Co Ltd Device a804 (prog-if 02 [NVM Express]) For whatever reason, I sometimes (often) loose connection to the device, causing the entire system to stop working until a powercycle has been completed. I've tried with official kernels and mainline kernels of 4.8 and 4.9 versions of the kernel, but all show the exact same problem at one point or another. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1652348] Re: initrd dhcp fails / ignores valid response
Tried and tested (the current up-to-date kernels at the time of posting): http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.10-rc1/linux- headers-4.10.0-041000rc1-generic_4.10.0-041000rc1.201612252031_amd64.deb http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.10-rc1/linux- image-4.10.0-041000rc1-generic_4.10.0-041000rc1.201612252031_amd64.deb They do not appear to suffer from the bug, dhcp was able to complete happily via the startup scripts in the initrd environment, and the host booted successfully. ** Tags added: kernel-fixed-upstream ** Tags added: kernel-fixed-upstream-4.10-rc1 ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete => Confirmed -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1652348 Title: initrd dhcp fails / ignores valid response Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: Between kernel versions 4.4.0-53 and 4.4.0-57 a bug has been (re?)introduced that is breaking dhcp booting in the initrd environment.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1651981] Re: shaking screen
Adrian, the next step is to fully commit bisect from kernel 4.8.0-30-generic to 4.8.0-32-generic in order to identify the last good kernel commit, followed immediately by the first bad one. This will allow for a more expedited analysis of the root cause of your issue. Could you please do this following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/KernelBisection ? Please note, finding adjacent kernel versions, or providing a commit from a kernel version bisect is not fully commit bisecting. Also, the kernel release names are irrelevant for the purposes of bisecting. It is most helpful that after the fix commit (not kernel version) has been identified, you then mark this report Status Confirmed. Thank you for your help. ** Tags removed: kernel-bug-exists-upstream-4.10.0-041000rc1 ** Tags added: kernel-bug-exists-upstream-4.10-rc1 needs-bisect ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed => Incomplete -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1651981 Title: shaking screen Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: After login into Ubuntu the screen starts to shake permanently. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1651830] Re: Intel HD Graphics 520 lagging after kernel upgrade
Frank, it's always best for security and bug fixes to keep the BIOS current, as an outdated BIOS can cause various OS related issues, and exposes your computer to security vulnerabilities. For help on updating, please see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BIOSUpdate . Once it is updated, please provide the output of the following terminal command (not perform an apport-collect): sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed => Incomplete -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1651830 Title: Intel HD Graphics 520 lagging after kernel upgrade Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: After upgrading to kernel version 4.4.0-53 on a clean install of Lubuntu, I have experienced a persistent problem where the desktop graphics (or any graphics when not using tty 1 to 6) appear to lag or freeze every 1 to 2 seconds for between 0.5 to 1 second. During the freezes, no mouse input is recorded, and most keyboard input is lost. I'm fairly sure this is a kernel issue, as booting with kernel 4.4.0-31 fixes the issue. This problem is also present in 4.4.0-57. I am using a Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon with integrated Intel graphics, which aren't the most powerful (they couldn't handle Unity, hence Lubunut). I am running Lubuntu 16.04 LTS, though I have tried a clean install (from the .iso) of Lubuntu 16.10, and this but still appears. The laptop has a4 core i5-6200U processor (2.3 GHz), 8 Gigs of RAM, and Intel HD Graphics 520 (Skylake) This does not appear to be a thermal issue, or a processor speed issue (the problem persists weather speed step is enabled in the bios or not), though my testing with processor speed step and kernel performance settings (performance/power save) was at best amateur. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1651830] Re: Intel HD Graphics 520 lagging after kernel upgrade
Cheers for the reply Christopher I have tested the mainline version 4.10-rc1 kernel, and unfortunately it did not fix the issue. I will continue to test as I notice new builds. I also didn't realise that my bios was outdated. While I'd like to upgrade, would it help this bug to keep my current bios version? Thanks ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete => Confirmed -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1651830 Title: Intel HD Graphics 520 lagging after kernel upgrade Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: After upgrading to kernel version 4.4.0-53 on a clean install of Lubuntu, I have experienced a persistent problem where the desktop graphics (or any graphics when not using tty 1 to 6) appear to lag or freeze every 1 to 2 seconds for between 0.5 to 1 second. Not tainted 4.4.0-21-generic #37-Ubuntu "echo 0 > /proc/sys/kernel/hung_task_timeout_secs" disables this message. === Then I edit /etc/sysctl.conf with follow commands and the system don't hang while rebooting vm.dirty_background_ratio=5 vm.dirty_ratio=10 kernel.panic=3 kernel.hung_task_panic=1 kernel.hung_task_timeout_secs=30 But I don't know if it's an appropriate fix or not.
