Title:
  Broadcom b43 Wifi no longer working in 16.04

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
  I've installed the new 16.04.1 (elementaryOS Loki) - removed `wl` wifi
  driver [which for some reason was installed even though I did NOT
  choose the option to install non-free software (mp3, etc..)].

  I then connected via ethernet, installed b43 via its `firmware-
  installer` package.

  My wifi sometimes works, ie. if manages to join a network, then all is
  cool, no disconnects, no problem.

  But many many times though, I can't join a wifi network.. :(

  Let me know any further info, test, and/or troubleshooting I can do to
  help figure out where this regression is coming from.

  I say regression because I was using 14.04.5 (elementaryOS Freya) and
  used b43 as wifi driver - and never had problems with wifi networks,
  it just worked fine.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 633983] Re: Can't boot amd64 live cd on Mac (EFI)

2017-01-29 Thread PetrolPC
I'm experiencing this bug when attempting to install Linux Mint 17.3 64 bit,
Ubuntu 14.04 LTS 64 bit and Debian 8.7.1 64 bit. The issue does not arise when
installing the 32 bit versions.
My Macbook specs can be found here:
http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/macbook/specs/macbook-core-2-duo-2.0-white-13-specs.html

Bug description:
  Previous release livecd's were bootable by holding down option while
  the cd was in the drive and selecting the "Windows" cd.

  Trying this with the Meerkat beta desktop livecd image (md5sum verified) I
just get two numbers (1. and 2.) which look like
  they should be labeling some text but there is no text visible and the
message to select CD-ROM boot type. Typing either a 1 or a 2 doesn't do
anything.

  Googling revealed that some Windows beta iso images had the same problem
booting on Macs; apparently in this case it was an issue that the Windows
version had EFI support (and so didn't use the BIOS fallback) but was assuming
a newer version of EFI.
  There were some other posts which claimed that it was that the iso image was
generated incorrectly (something having to do with ISO9660 versions).

  Unfortunately, even though I develop software for a living, there is
  nothing I can do to help debug this (except try newer versions) since
  once I get to that message, everything seems unresponsive.

  The upshot is that a useful thing which I did frequently in older
  versions (i.e. boot the 64bit desktop livecd on this macbook) no
  longer works.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1349740] Re: acpi PNP0A08:00: _OSC failed (AE_ERROR); disabling ASPM

2017-01-29 Thread Colin Ian King
@Musbach:

decode_osc_support(root, "OS supports", support);
status = acpi_pci_osc_support(root, support);
if (ACPI_FAILURE(status)) {
dev_info(>dev, "_OSC failed (%s); disabling ASPM\n",
 acpi_format_exception(status));
*no_aspm = 1;
return;
}

Please explain how this is a kernel bug when it is a firmware issue and
I'll be happy to figure out a fix.

2017-01-29 Thread Musbach
The bug is still present in 16.04.1 LTS. The BIOS settings don't
influence the behavior: ASPM on or off. It is a bug in the kernel.

  since kernel -6 (but I don't remember the exact version, anyway the update

randomly, I don't understand what triggers it) emits a sound from speakers
which sounds like 'TOC'.

Status in linux source package in Zesty:

Bug description:
  The patch for bug 1158668 installs cpupower_$(abi_version) command-
  line tool as well as libcpupower.so.$(abi_version).

  This isn't particularly suitable for projects that previously used
  libcpufreq and intend to migrate to libcpupower, because the
  libcpupower.so symlink is no longer installed. The command-line tools
  can also have symlinks (e.g. cpupower -> cpupower_$(abi_version)).

2017-01-29 Thread Fifoxtasy
i also had the issue with a high pitched noise (see #59) when no sound
was playing since upgrading to LinuxMint KDE 18.1.

Comment #50 has the solution, thank you so much

  since kernel -6 (but I don't remember the exact version, anyway the update
was pulled in this week), my sound card once every minute (or better to say
randomly, I don't understand what triggers it) emits a sound from speakers
which sounds like 'TOC'.
  I think this sound is caused by the power save options that were enabled in
the module snd-hda-intel

  This sound also comes out if the volume is mute, or set to 0%

Bug description:
  A few kernels updates ago (after kernel 3.13.0-98) on 14.04 (Trusty) a
  backported fix for Dirty COW from kernel 4.8.3 resulted in some Delphi
  apps freezing wineserver and leaving it unkillable:

  I haven't tested for the bug on 16.04 Xenial (kernel 4.4.0-59) but it
  is probably affected. A patch is available:
