[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1686592] Re: APST quirk needed for Intel NVMe

2017-05-20 Thread Andy Lutomirski
For those of you with problematic Intel devices, could you post the
relevant line from 'lspci -nn'? It looks like there are a few known
firmware issues with some Intel SSDs and a fix is in the works.
Meanwhile, I want to quirk the correct set of devices.

(I'm hoping they're all 8086:f1a5)

Bug description:
My last kernel update changed something that is causing the network
manager to fail to load anything but the lo device.

If I reboot into the previous kernel (4.8.0-38) everything works fine.

I'm not certain that this issue is related to the NetworkManger or the
Kernel, but the bottom line is I have not ethernet when I boot using
  the latest kernel.

This is one of three computers I built a few years back.
It's based on an Asus motherboard: P5G41T-M LX PLUS, BIOS 050210/21/2011
The eth0 NIC is on the motherboard.

Any info you need, I will try and provide.
Any help you might offer would be appreciated.

I run apt-get update followed by apt-get dist-upgrade every day.
This is the first time I've had a serious problem as a byproduct of updating.

Bug description:
I installed Ubuntu 16.10 on my Lenovo Ideapad Flex 4 laptop. Ubuntu does not
recognize the touchpad (it does recognize the touch screen nicely though). When
I run xinput -list, I do not see the touchpad. I dual boot with Windows 10,
which recognizes the touchpad from Elantech. I searched online for days and I
found Elantech drivers for Ubuntu 14.04, however, I was unable to load older
versions of Ubuntu on my laptop. Do you expect to support the Elantech touchpad
in future updates? I attached a screen shot of my xinput -list output. Please
let me know if you require any additional information. Thank you.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1676635] Re: [Hyper-V] Implement Hyper-V PTP Source

2017-05-20 Thread Alex Ng
@Alberto Ornaghi.

Are you running in Azure or in your own Hyper-V host? If you have access
to the Hyper-V host, you can disable the TimeSync integration service
from the VM settings.

Otherwise, you can create a script that runs "echo 2dd1ce17-079e-
403c-b352-a1921ee207ee > /sys/bus/vmbus/drivers/hv_util/unbind" upon
startup. This disables TimeSync from within the guest VM.

Hope this helps,
Alex

  hv_utils: implement Hyper-V PTP source

With TimeSync version 4 protocol support we started updating system time
continuously through the whole lifetime of Hyper-V guests. Every 5 seconds
there is a time sample from the host which triggers do_settimeofday[64]().
While the time from the host is very accurate such adjustments may cause
  issues:
  - Time is jumping forward and backward, some applications may misbehave.
  - In case an NTP server runs in parallel and uses something else for time
sync (network, PTP,...) system time will never converge.
  - Systemd starts annoying you by printing "Time has been changed" every 5
    seconds to the system log.

Instead of doing in-kernel time adjustments offload the work to an
NTP client by exposing TimeSync messages as a PTP device. Users may now
decide what they want to use as a source.

I tested the solution with chrony, the config was:

   refclock PHC /dev/ptp0 poll 3 dpoll -2 offset 0

The result I'm seeing is accurate enough, the time delta between the guest
and the host is almost always within [-10us, +10us], the in-kernel
solution
  was giving us comparable results.

I also tried implementing PPS device instead of PTP by using not currently
used Hyper-V synthetic timers (we use only one of four for clockevent) but
with PPS source only chrony wasn't able to give me the required accuracy,
the delta often more that 100us.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1676635] Re: [Hyper-V] Implement Hyper-V PTP Source

2017-05-20 Thread Alberto Ornaghi
is there any workaround until the patch is release for Xenial?

this issue is causing our Mongodb cluster to misbehave since the
oscillating clock is triggering a bug (not yet fixed and released) that
lead the mongodb process to accumulate journal files and filling the
disk until it stops working.

do you have an ETA for Xenial?

thank you.

I have experienced freeze with Linux vinco 4.10.0-21-generic

In addition to "invalid opcode: [#1] SMP", there are:
"NMI watchdog: BUG: soft lockup - CPU#6 stuck for 23s! [Timer:8949]"

At first, Firefox froze. Could not kill it, and when tried to log out
for KDE session, everything froze, and I had to reisub.

manually re-connect. Someone on the ubuntuforum says my signal level swings
too much and this is a bug.

Bug description:
Upgraded to zesty about a week ago. Ran into this on latest kernel.
(during high load, nothing in particular seems to cause it to happen).

Did not happen with previous (4.10.0.14.16) kernel. Only after update
to 4.10.0.15.17, has happened about 3 times since then (or other
crashes), this is the one I could capture.

kern.log entries below. Let me know if you need anything else from me.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1686815] Re: Missing Bluetooth firmware for intel 8265 on Ubuntu 16.04

2017-05-20 Thread Hill Ma
I can second that.

I have a Gigabyte GC-WB867D-I card. The bluetooth was not working before
the installation of linux-firmware_1.157.11~pre201704282144_all.deb and
it starts to work after the installation.

Title:
Missing Bluetooth firmware for intel 8265 on Ubuntu 16.04

Status in linux-firmware package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in linux-firmware source package in Xenial:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Bluetooth doesn't work in Ubuntu 16.04 on systems with Intel 8265
wireless modules that haven't yet had firmware loaded onto them.
  dmesg reports the following:

Bluetooth: hci0: Direct firmware load for intel/ibt-12-16.sfi failed
  with error -2

This could be difficult for many people to reproduce, since installing
a later version of Ubuntu once will load the necessary firmware, which
will persist through reinstalling the operating system. So installing
Ubuntu 17.04 just once, will leave Bluetooth in a working state
  forever.

I was able to consistently produce the issue on a *brand new* Kabylake
Meerkat 3. With Ubuntu 16.04.2, bluetooth didn't work. I copied the
  ibt-12-16.sfi and ibt-12-16.ddc into /lib/firmware/intel and rebooted.
After this point, Bluetooth worked (and continued to work after
reinstalling Ubuntu 16.04.2 and *not* copying the firmware files
  again).

2017-05-20 Thread Piotr Kołaczkowski
I have the same bug on Dell Precision 5520 and Ubuntu 17.04 with either
officially supported kernel 4.10.0-21 as well as mainline kernel 4.11.1.

[0.037469] ACPI Error: [\_SB_.PCI0.XHC_.RHUB.HS11] Namespace lookup
failure, AE_NOT_FOUND (20170119/dswload-210)
[0.037476] ACPI Exception: AE_NOT_FOUND, During name lookup/catalog

[0.037516] ACPI Exception: AE_NOT_FOUND, (SSDT:xh_rvp11) while loading
table (20170119/tbxfload-228)

Title:
ACPI Error: [\_SB_.PCI0.XHC_.RHUB.HS11] Namespace lookup failure,

[ 0.021348] ACPI Error: 1 table load failures, 7 successful
(20150930/tbxfload-214)

I have noticed this ACPI error persisting in my syslog and dmesg. Based on
what I have learnt from ACPI, acpitool -w and lspci, I think the error is
related to Namespaces provided in the DDST on \_SB_.PCI0.XHC_.RHUB.HS11, which
I think concerns the Root → System bus tree → PCI bus → USB controller: Intel
Corporation Sunrise Point-H USB 3.0 xHCI Controller (rev 31) in my system. I
have not found what .RHUB.HS11 refers too. I have tried changing my UEFI USB
settings but to no avail. Appreciate help to fix this bug.

I reported it as a question
  https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/293489 and to
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1553690.
https://launchpad.net/~penalvch advice me to make this ubuntu-bug
  report.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1652504] Re: Recent updates broke Ubuntu on Raspberry Pi 3

2017-05-20 Thread JoergH
I don't know about the breakage, but I was just bitten by this bug after
an upgrade, and #16 fixed the issue for me, too.

Recent updates broke Ubuntu on Raspberry Pi 3

Status in flash-kernel package in Ubuntu:

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  Hello,
I've been running Raspberry Pi 3 with Ubuntu as described here
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ARM/RaspberryPi

I've installed Ubuntu 16.04 and then upgraded to 16.10 and have been
using this setup successfully since October up until last week.
Unfortunately one of the latest kernel updates broke the installation
and I found out the same happened for Ubuntu 16.04 LTS - and therefore
I can no longer run up-to-date Ubuntu installation (with updated
  kernel) on my RPI.

  I am getting this error:
Error image is not a fdt - must reset the board to recover

I also tried this but it didn't help me:
  https://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=28=168838

Now I know running Ubuntu on RPI3 this way is not officially
supported, but since Ubuntu Snappy is supported I thought someone here
could know what is going on.

Title:
  initrd 4x size between 4.8 and 4.10

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:

  growth is intended:

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1692208] Re: initrd 4x size between 4.8 and 4.10

2017-05-20 Thread Dave Gilbert
the 4.2.0 initrd's are pretty sparse, the recent ones seem to have a
full set of modules and firmware (e.g. 18MB of drivers/net)

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1692208] [NEW] initrd 4x size between 4.8 and 4.10

2017-05-20 Thread Dave Gilbert
Public bug reported:

My initrd in recent kernels is 4x larger than in slightly older kernels,
making /boot just large enough. It seems unlikely this growth is
intended:

-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 44052519 May 13 12:29 initrd.img-4.10.0-19-generic
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 44050984 May 13 12:28 initrd.img-4.10.0-20-generic

-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 10767780 May 13 12:29 initrd.img-4.8.0-26-generic

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1670041] Re: Poor performance of Atheros QCA6174 802.11ac (rev 32) (Killer Wireless 1535)

2017-05-20 Thread Dmitrii Shcherbakov
Tested the patched kernel - the results are consistent now across laptop
-> server, server -> laptop tests for both TCP and UDP.

➜ ~ uname -a
Linux blade 4.10.0-20-generic #22~lp1670041 SMP Fri May 5 18:23:15 UTC 2017
x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

4 tests:
1) laptop -> server via AP (TCP);
2) laptop -> server via AP (UDP);
3) server -> laptop via AP (TCP);
4) server -> laptop via AP (UDP).

https://paste.ubuntu.com/24610258/

So with the patched kernel TCP performance seems to be fine.

Update: added some forensics in the paste (a long read):

TL;DR with a bit of intuition:
We need a new firmware-5.bin from Qualcomm Atheros for this rev 32 card in
order to make it work well - if anybody has contacts there it would be nice to
ask them to upload this to the upstream linux-firmware tree.

  I experience a very poor 802.11ac performance of a QCA6174 Wireless card

This is a dev version of Zesty with a recently released 4.10 kernel:

Testing wireless speed with RT-87U 802.11ac router shows that the
speed is only 27.3 megabits per second which is very low for an
  802.11ac card:

  iperf -c rtr

Client connecting to rtr, TCP port 5001
TCP window size: 85.0 KByte (default)

  [ 3] local 10.10.10.78 port 48930 connected with 10.10.10.1 port 5001
  [ ID] Interval Transfer Bandwidth
  [ 3] 0.0-10.0 sec 32.6 MBytes 27.3 Mbits/sec

For comparison, on the same network (from the same distance to the
router) I have the following result with an Intel's card (on a 4.8
  kernel, different laptop):

  UX32LN:~$ lspci | grep 7260
02:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation Wireless 7260 (rev bb)

  UX32LN:~$ iperf -c rtr

Client connecting to rtr, TCP port 5001
TCP window size: 85.0 KByte (default)

  [ 3] local 10.10.10.208 port 37196 connected with 10.10.10.1 port 5001

  [ 3] 0.0-10.1 sec 237 MBytes 198 Mbits/sec
  administrator@UX32LN:~$ lsp
  lspci lspcmcia lspgpot

  200 Mbps is much better.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1626689] Re: During boot process, system goes to sleep

2017-05-20 Thread flrtx
I only have 4.10.0-20 and 4.8.0-20. I tried them both. It’s the same.

I also tried booting in upstart mode (since I was in the Grub prompt).
The boot process works better, the system doesn’t go to sleep during
boot. However, the GUI doesn’t load and I only have a console, which I
can’t even use to shut the computer down ('failed to talk to init
service'). But still, is this an indication my problem has to do with
systemd?

During boot process, system goes to sleep

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
After upgrading to 16.04, my computer goes to sleep during the boot process,
shortly after I entered the passphrase to unlock my LVM. When I wake it up, I’m
at the graphical login prompt. I type my user password, press enter and it goes
to sleep again. When I wake it up, I’m in my working Lubuntu desktop. This
happens every time I boot. And it’s quite annoying.
Please tell me which additional information I can provide to help fix this
bug.

The symptoms were very similar - firefox in the foreground and computer
locked up but there where no usual swapon oops record in the syslog this
time.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1692143] Re: fs changes in kernel 4.12 break mount of ntfs-3g, possible data corruption

2017-05-20 Thread Nicholas Stommel
Okay, so the warning is clearly being generated by the WARN_ON function in
fs/super.c.
I realize I could disable the warning, but that sounds like a bad idea. One
question though,
why would we be verifying if sb->s_bdi is equal to the address of some "struct
backing_dev_info noop_backing_dev_info" from either the files
/include/linux/backing-dev.h or /mm/backing-dev.c
(Found references to definition of this struct in these two file using the
power of grep -rl)
in fs/super.c on line 1281, when we reassign it anyway to a local variable bdi
right after? In other words, IS there something going wrong here, or is this
warning insignificant and should be removed?

1281: WARN_ON(sb->s_bdi != _backing_dev_info);
1282: sb->s_bdi = bdi;

Title:
fs changes in kernel 4.12 break mount of ntfs-3g, possible data
  corruption

Status in fuse package in Ubuntu:

Status in ntfs-3g package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
Mounting any ntfs partition or ntfs-formatted external drive in kernel
4.12 results in a critical kernel warning. Possible data corruption
could happen, as the drive must be forcibly unmounted. The kernel
warning appears in the syslog literally every single time, this is a
very reproducible bug. The same warning/stack trace all pointing to
the function super_setup_bdi_name in /linux/fs/super.c:1281 along with
related calls to fuse functions appears in Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, Ubuntu
16.10. and Ubuntu 17.04. Here I will only include the information
relevant to my installation of 16.04.2 LTS. This seems rather
critical, as ntfs is one of the only suitable formats supported by
(and shareable between) Windows and Linux, and I worry that possible
  data corruption could be happening.
