Re: [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1708922] Re: uvcvideo module does not work with Dell XPS 12 webcam

2017-08-12 Thread emk2203
I researched the issue some time ago. My webcam and several others like HP
are affected by a faulty driver for this webcam, which should be the kernel
uvcvideo module. This is the reason why it happens in several progs, like
guvcview and cheese.

vlc does it's own thing and does not rely on the kernel driver. This is the
reason why it's unaffected.

Title:
uvcvideo module does not work with Dell XPS 12 webcam

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
uvcvideo: Found UVC 1.00 device Integrated Webcam (0bda:5716) from
Dell XPS 12 laptop (9Q33 version) does not work properly for several
  versions of the kernel now.

guvcview nor cheese both show the issue, so it's the uvcvideo driver.
Starting at 640x480 and higher resolutions, parts of lower half of
video flickers / don't show image.

  Error messages:
V4L2_CORE: (jpeg decoder) error while decoding frame
V4L2_CORE: (jpeg decoder) Ignoring empty buffer
  V4L2_CORE: Error - Couldn't decode frame

VLC seems to use another driver AND DOES NOT SHOW issue.

Title:
something prevents the cooler fan from spinning as fast as needed

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
Something in Ubuntu keeps my laptop's cooler fan from going at the
speed that would be needed to keep the temperature within its safe
  range.

The proof that something is wrong is that the computer overheats to
the point that, first, the CPU starts to slow down to protect itself
(you can tell the CPU has less power because trivial processes that
barely do any work suddenly are consuming great percentages of CPU)
and eventually even the computer shuts down (abruptly) to prevent
itself from burning **AND** the fan speed doesn't get even close to
its maximum speed while all this is happening.

Note: I keep thermald turned off because of issue 1600599. I also disabled
intel_powerclamp and intel_rapl to rule out that they were just kicking in
before it's actually necessary.
This has mitigated the issue, I'm pretty sure, but it has not solved it
completely.

Yes, my fan is full of dust and doesn't do its job very well, but if
that alone was the issue, the fan should reach its top speed well
before the CPU reaches critical temperature.

The definitive proof that the fan *can* go faster is that, when the
computer is overheating, if I restart it, at the grub screen, the fan
spins a lot faster. Then, as the OS boots, its speed drops. Then you
can also hear as the speed slowly diminishes, as if it was gradually
slowing down because it's managing to keep the temperature under
control. Except that the temperature keeps going up.

Even by just suspending and resuming, the fan speed gets a noticeable
boost (not as huge as by rebooting, for some reason), which is utter
nonsense, and then soon slows down again.

The huge increase in fan speed at restart just before boot (note: only
when the computer is hot) proves that not only the fan can spin faster
than the OS lets it, but also that the hardware "KNOWS" how fast it
should spin. Either the hardware, assuming that no driver has been
loaded yet when presented the grub screen, or some kind of more
primitive driver that is loaded together with grub, I don't know.
SOMETHING does know how to control the fan speed properly, and
something that is started during boot imposes a wrong, lower speed.

I assume that the fan speed is not regulated by a simple fixed map from
temperature values to fan speed values. That would completely explain the
behaviour (the fan is not as efficient as it is supposed to be, hence the
predetermined speed values function of temperature are not enough), but it
would be incredibly stupid. Please tell me that's not the case.

Thanks for the information. I'll go through them.

Aaron, can you try to switch security level of your machine to the same:

Security Level - Display Port and USB

and see if the problem reproduces?

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1710390] Re: iwlwifi: Microcode SW error detected. Restarting 0x2000000

2017-08-12 Thread makitso

/etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf and adding this to the file did
solve the problem.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1710392] Re: Additional initializer needed to recognize trackpad on Lenovo Yoga 720 laptop

2017-08-12 Thread Mike Schwartz
I searched the WWW for any kind of solution to the trackpad not being
recognized. There are several months of similar questions, but no
resolution. Until this patch was made public/known.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1658345] Re: Touchpad not recognized on Lenovo Ideapad Flex 4 running Ubuntu 16.10

2017-08-12 Thread Keary Parinis
I was able to get the mousepad working with the last kernel you posted.
However, the touchscreen is not working. Mousepad shows up as "Elan Touchpad"
in xinput. Now missing "SYNA7300:00 06CB:177C" device that was the touchscreen.

Touchpad not recognized on Lenovo Ideapad Flex 4 running Ubuntu 16.10

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
I installed Ubuntu 16.10 on my Lenovo Ideapad Flex 4 laptop. Ubuntu does not
recognize the touchpad (it does recognize the touch screen nicely though). When
I run xinput -list, I do not see the touchpad. I dual boot with Windows 10,
which recognizes the touchpad from Elantech. I searched online for days and I
found Elantech drivers for Ubuntu 14.04, however, I was unable to load older
versions of Ubuntu on my laptop. Do you expect to support the Elantech touchpad
in future updates? I attached a screen shot of my xinput -list output. Please
let me know if you require any additional information. Thank you.

Title:
uvcvideo module does not work with Dell XPS 12 webcam

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
uvcvideo: Found UVC 1.00 device Integrated Webcam (0bda:5716) from
Dell XPS 12 laptop (9Q33 version) does not work properly for several
  versions of the kernel now.

guvcview nor cheese both show the issue, so it's the uvcvideo driver.
Starting at 640x480 and higher resolutions, parts of lower half of
video flickers / don't show image.

  Error messages:
V4L2_CORE: (jpeg decoder) error while decoding frame
V4L2_CORE: (jpeg decoder) Ignoring empty buffer
  V4L2_CORE: Error - Couldn't decode frame

VLC seems to use another driver AND DOES NOT SHOW issue.

Dear!

Perhaps you have already been to that amazing place? We've liked it
from the first view, simply take a look http://e-soft-

See you soon, Carol Minor

Subject: Learning FTW!

I'll break it down easily. Denmark and Poland wanted you kicked out
because you traded WEAPONS to Ethiopia before we were invaded. Those
weapons are the ones that took my Congo. So, the Trade Federation
lives but as a result you are no longer in it from a vote. (I don't
know if you knew where these weapons went, but like you said you we're
