Bug description:
  SRU Justification

Impact: Many users are reporting issues with bios corruption with
17.10. This seems to stem from enabling the intel-spi-* drivers in the
kernel, which don't appear to be ready for use on end-user machines.

  Fix: Disable this driver.

Test Case: Fix has been verified by our HWE team on affected hardware.

Regression Potential: Minimal, it's unlikely anyone is actually doing
  anything which requires this driver.

  Hi all,

Basically on Lenovo Y50-70 after installing Ubuntu 17.10, many users
  reported a corrupted BIOS.

It's not possible to save new settings in BIOS anymore and after
rebooting, the system starts with the old settings.

Moreover (and most important) USB booting is not possible anymore
since USB is not recognized. It's very serious, since our machines do
  not have a CDROM.

Lenovo forums at the moment are full of topics regading this issue.

  Thank you!!

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1739765] Re: xt_TCPMSS buffer overflow bug

2017-12-23 Thread Denys Fedoryshchenko
Yes, already queued by Eric Dumazet in all stable since report in April
http://patchwork.ozlabs.org/patch/746618/

Yes, i did, but troubleshooting done and fix issued by Eric Dumazet.
Also there is chance exist that someone used it for malicious purposes "in
wild" at that moment, as it appeared at peak time on ISP, in specific network
with many users, while exactly same setup on other locations didn't had this
issue. That was reason to enable KASAN and to search for it.

No CVE as far as i know, i just don't know how to do that. Not sure if
Eric or netfilter developers (for example Pablo Neira Ayuso) filled
anything.

  xt_TCPMSS buffer overflow bug

Bug was reported in LKML here: https://lkml.org/lkml/2017/4/2/13
In few words - corrupted packet might be used to modify memory at router who
has xt_TCPMSS used as iptables action.
This is really nasty bug, and can be triggered remotely by malicious person
on anything that usually use this iptables action (PPPoE/PPTP-enabled ISP or
VPN provider, for example).
This bug existed for several years, i guess.
I waited for a while since April, as it's already pushed to stable, and
probably all distributions have it updated, so now it's time to do bugreport,
to make sure it is really fixed everywhere.
Maybe worth to assign CVE for it?

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1734147] Re: Ubuntu 17.10 corrupting BIOS - many LENOVO laptops models

2017-12-23 Thread jcdutton
There might be a way to fix this in software, without the need for a hardware
motherboard replacement.
So, my advice is be patient, and wait for the official fix.

  Thank you!!

not sure if it helps, but please /proc/ioports below. There is a
difference between kernel 4.13 (not working) and kernel 4.5.7 (working):

kernel 4.5.7 (working):
  0220-022e : nuvoton-cir
  02e0-02ee : nuvoton-cir

kernel 4.13 before suspend and before module reload (not working):
  03e0-03ee : nuvoton-cir
  0a20-0a2e : nuvoton-cir-wake

kernel 4.13 after suspend and module reload (working):
  0220-022e : nuvoton-cir-wake
  02e0-02ee : nuvoton-cir

Maybe resource allocation is causing issues here

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1739905] [NEW] kernel update never finishes with proprietary nvidia

2017-12-23 Thread Damon Lynch
Public bug reported:

While I have the Nvidia proprietary driver installed, am currently
running the monitor off of the CPU's built-in graphics adapter. Two GTX
1070s are present.

The kernel update always gets stuck at the DKMS stage, e.g.:

run-parts: executing /etc/kernel/postinst.d/dkms 4.13.0-21-generic
/boot/vmlinuz-4.13.0-21-generic

When the monitor is plugged into one of the Nvidia adapters, the kernel
updates as expected.

  Thank you!!

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1734147] Re: Ubuntu 17.10 corrupting BIOS - many LENOVO laptops models

2017-12-23 Thread Eric
Acer ES1-111-C1ZM doesn't save anymore BIOS settings after install 16.04LTS
32bits.
No boot device choice, new hard drive not detected, etc..

The only possibility was to take the same disk, install Ubuntu 16.04LTS
on another machine and put it back on the Acer.

System Bios version V1.13
InsydeH20 Setup Utility

Good luck to find a functional Bios. I hope!

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1734147] Re: Ubuntu 17.10 corrupting BIOS - many LENOVO laptops models

2017-12-23 Thread Mogens Bramm
Bug confirmed in 17.10, my Lenovo G50-70 no longer boots from USB and
BIOS setting not saved. Luckily this model has a dvd drive which is
still bootable. Any news on Canonical-Lenovo progress on a fix for
already damaged PCs?

  Thank you!!

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1734147] Re: Ubuntu 17.10 corrupting BIOS - many LENOVO laptops models

2017-12-23 Thread allen
I haven't seen the original kernel mod that caused the problem, but from
a vulnerability stand-point, here is my take from reading the 261
comments.

Temporary kernel mode access (in any Operating System) allows an
attacker to permanently put the BIOS in a default state without ability
to perform full operating system re-installs.

I expect some panic to start happening as soon as corporate IT types
figure this out.

The degree of the problem will be determined if it is only Insyde
Software, or if it also impacts corporate quality BIOS developed by Dell
and other major vendors.

2017-12-23 Thread allen
Mran, Does your Dell come up with "Insyde Software" in the BIOS or the
more traditional Dell BIOS found in corporate desktops and laptops. If
it the second, this is a much bigger deal in the vulnerability
community.

  Thank you!!

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1733888] Re: iwlwifi Error sending STATISTICS_CMD: time out after 2000ms.

2017-12-23 Thread Arnau Villoslada
I've tested it with 4.14, works like a charm:
$ uname -r
4.14.0-041400-generic

I also tried it with 4.15-rc4 but no luck there, it has the same problem.
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.15-rc4/

So far it works but if I were to encounter any problems I'll post the
details.

  Incomplete

Bug description:
This started happening today so probably a new issue caused by a
  kernel update.

Randomly, maybe every 45 minutes wifi disconnects and reconnects.
Attached is a log output from dmesg. Looks like issue is in the

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1734147] Re: Ubuntu 17.10 corrupting BIOS - many LENOVO laptops models

2017-12-23 Thread jcdutton
Caveat: I am not from Ubuntu, Lenovo or Intel. So the below is just
speculations and not fact.

There might be some good news for all the users experiencing this
problem.

The problem appears to be for laptops with the W25Q64FW flash chip from
Winbound.
https://www.winbond.com/resource-files/w25q64fw_revd_032513.pdf

I have found something interesting in the Data Sheets for the
W25Q64FW flash chip.

"One Time Program (OTP) write protection for array and Security
Registers using Status Register *
* Note: This feature is available upon special order. Please contact
Winbond for details."

So, there might be a possibility that the OTP version of the chip is
not in these laptops.
And, thus, they will all be repairable in software. I.e. we fix it by setting
the
CMP bit correctly to zero.

It might be worth asking Lenovo which version of the chip they use in
their laptops.
Because, if the OTP bits are not present, it will be far less risky
trying to fix this problem we are having.
Less risky, in the sense that we cannot make the situation worse.

I would advise against anyone trying to fix the CMP bit themselves,
because there are some "Write Once" security bits right next to them,
that could result in irreversible damage requiring a motherboard swap.
Once Lenovo confirm that their flash chips do not have the OTP bits, you
can test correcting the CMP bit.

  Hi all,

Basically on Lenovo Y50-70 after installing Ubuntu 17.10, many users
  reported a corrupted BIOS.

It's not possible to save new settings in BIOS anymore and after

Moreover (and most important) USB booting is not possible anymore
since USB is not recognized. It's very serious, since our machines do
  not have a CDROM.

Lenovo forums at the moment are full of topics regading this issue.

  Thank you!!

  ---

  Thank you!!

   UPDATE (22/12/2017)

LENOVO machines affected so far (please add your affected model to
  this list):

can't disable wi-fi and system hangs on shutdown

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
If I try to turn off wi-fi the system freezes for few seconds and after that
internet is not working and I can't open settings anymore, even if the wi-fi
tray icon still shows a connection.
When I shutdown the system it says that "A stop job for network-manager and
wpa supplicant is running" and I have to wait for 10-11 minutes. Suspension
doesn't work neither.
Everything was working just fine on 17.10 daily builds.

She is one of those international porn star escorts in Delhi who visited
India on the invitation of Delhi Dolls escorts agency and served our
clients and guests in Delhi, she came with a pre-booking schedule and
left no space for any extra meetings. So if you want to have such a
beautiful, hot and sexy French escort in Delhi then make sure to book
your appointment early and pay the token amount to avoid any kind of
disappointment. Generally we have found that clients always wait for the
arrival of the girl in Delhi and then took few days to ask for
appointment, but to tell them these porn star escorts in Delhi are
available for a week or maximum a fortnight in Delhi NCR or even in
India.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1731031] Re: Kernel Oops with 17.10

2017-12-23 Thread Henning Meyer
I was unable to trigger the bug with the 4.13.0-19-TwoReverts kernel
(one hour of observation).

The stack traces in bug 1734327 look very similar to the ones I see,
like that bug I have one machine that triggers the bug (kernel panic
within 5 minutes of internet usage), and one that doesn't. I can
reproduce the problem with the latest 4.13.0-21-generic Ubuntu kernel
(first encountered with a 4.13.0-16-generic kernel).

I will try to reproduce the problem once more with the default 4.13.0-19
kernel, and then keep running the 4.13.0-19-TwoReverts kernel.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1400463] Re: [Medion Akoya P2214T] Touchpad not properly recognized

2017-12-23 Thread Pat
Sorry this was not intended to happen:

So this should also work:
*make a Bootable USBStick of Ubuntu 17.10
*disable SecureBoot in BIOS (but better read Documentation before doing so)
*choose Try Ubuntu when u are ask and the Touchpad should work

Ubuntu 17.10 has a lot of Advantages over 16.04 when using the Medion p2214t
like
 * preinstalled rotating
 * preinstalled touchscreen keyboard

The Other solution on Ubuntu 16.04 without disabling SecureBoot would be a much
more complicated since your would have to do kernal signing in order to get
your new kernel module singed properly

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1400463] Re: [Medion Akoya P2214T] Touchpad not properly recognized

2017-12-23 Thread Pat
So here i am sitting scrolling Down with my Touchpad (Scroll Gesture not
working) but Toupad is.

Solution: I have disabled SecureBoot and was able to "make install" of the
akoya-fixup from git.
After restart the Touchpad was working on Ubuntu 16.04-r3 with latest
Mainline-Kernel .

After that i installed a complete new Version of Ubuntu 17.10 with full
whip of Ubuntu 16.04-r3, since i wanted to install the Git Solution on
17.10

And to my Surprise the mouse was working out of the Box (SecureBoot
still disabled).

So this should also work:
*make a Bootable USBStick of Ubuntu 17.10
 *
and Choos Try Ubuntu when u are ask.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1728244] Re: Touchpad stops working after reboot on Apollo Lake

2017-12-23 Thread Hans de Goede
Hi All,

Clicking the 0911:5288 clickpad not sending button events is a known and
fixed issue, this is fixed by the following 3 commits:

"HID: multitouch: Properly deal with Win8 PTP reports with 0 touches"
"HID: multitouch: Only look at non touch fields in first packet of a frame"
"HID: multitouch: Combine all left-button events in a frame"

>From this branch:
https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/jikos/hid.git/log/?h=for-4.16/hid-quirks-cleanup/multitouch

Which will be merged into the 4.16 kernel. In the mean time these should
probably be added to the Ubuntu kernels.

Regards,

Hans

See Attachment for what happens is immediately after backup starts I

  Thank you!!

2017-12-23 Thread Alan
Today I observed this problem is fixed in Nautilus 3.26.2 (as supplied
with Fedora 27). Assuming this version or higher will flow to Ubuntu in
the future, I would regard this bug as resolved "in the fullness of
time". Thanks

Title:
Nautilus unable to see the storage in my Fuji HS30EXR PTP canera since
upgrading from Ubuntu 17.04 to 17.10

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  What happens:
Something appears to have changed in Nautilus after Nautilus version
1:3.20.4-0ubuntu2 (as in Ubuntu 17.04) and by version 1:3.26.0.0ubuntu1 (as in
Ubuntu 17.10)*, causing the storage on my USB PTP camera (a Fujifilm HS30EXR)
not to be visible to Nautilus when the camera is connected to the computer via
USB and switched on. (Camera firmware was updated and the camera retested on
two Ubuntu 17.10 computers)

  What is expected to happen:
On my remaining Ubuntu 17.04 computer (and earlier versions) the camera
always pops up in the Nautilus left-hand sidebar when the camera is connected
via USB and switched on.

  To reproduce the bug:
  1. Launch "Files" from the Dock
  2. Connect a Fujifilm HS30EXR camera (WITH an SD card installed) via USB
  3. Observe if camera can be browsed in Nautilus.

  What is still working:
Three other cameras were tested and found not to have this problem with
Nautilus: Acorn Ltl5310A (with SD card storage), Nikon P340 (SD card) and
Olympus C8080WZ (xD and CF cards).

  More detail:
  Apport information report attached.

Problem occurs when logged in to either Gnome or Unity Desktop in
  Ubuntu 17.10.

On a prompt from an askubuntu.com user I also tested the Fuji camera
on a Ubuntu 17.10 live USB (64 bit ISO downloaded 2 Nov 2017) and
found the problem to occur there as well.

Problems with Fuji cameras may have occurred in the past and been
  fixed - see Bug #1273498

  * Problem may have appeared on or before Nautilus version 3.24.2.1
(Fedora WS 26), but was not observed in Fedora 25
