[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1697450] Re: Gnome Shell hangs at startup

2018-01-01 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Ah, yes. Sorry but your bug 1726600 is a duplicate of bug 1505409. And I
think this one is different to those two. It just means the wrong .crash
file was sent...

Please try following the steps in #15 again, or repeatedly, and we'll
see if we can find an instance of this one.

Bug description:
I'm trying to install from the daily Artful desktop image (20170612).

After boot, the gnome session hangs at startup, while the "zoom"
  animation is being shown.

  I have an intel card:

I'm not sure how to debug this further, but I had similar issues with the
installer from Zesty as well (see
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/1681846)
With Artful, at least it gets past the splash screen but then it hangs.

Note that the system is currently running Yakkety with no issue.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1734147] Re: Ubuntu 17.10 corrupting BIOS - many LENOVO laptops models

2018-01-01 Thread Anthony M.
This bug affects the following Acer model as well (I've confirmed it as
of now, please add it to the affected models list):

Acer Swift SF314-52

I've installed the kernel 4.14.9 and can confirm that the USB Boot
option is still unavailable. I'll try to install 4.15 and get back to
you.

** Description changed:

Description: An update to linux kernel on Ubuntu 17.10 that enabled the
intel-spi-* drivers made Insyde BIOS unusable. Main issues were Settings
being not stored, USB Boot impossible and EFI entries read-only.

Fix: The issue was fixed in Kernel Version 4.13.0-21. But previous
affected machines still suffered from a broken BIOS.

Repair: Boot Linux and Install Kernel Version 4.14.9. Reboot into Linux
and BIOS should be restored to a working state.

  ---

Test Case: Fix has been verified by our HWE team on affected hardware.

Regression Potential: Minimal, it's unlikely anyone is actually doing
  anything which requires this driver.

  Original Description:

Basically on Lenovo Y50-70 after installing Ubuntu 17.10, many users
  reported a corrupted BIOS.

It's not possible to save new settings in BIOS anymore and after
rebooting, the system starts with the old settings.

Moreover (and most important) USB booting is not possible anymore since
USB is not recognized. It's very serious, since our machines do not have
  a CDROM.

TB16 dock ethernet corrupts data with hw checksum silently failing

Status in Dell Sputnik:
  Triaged
Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  In Progress
Status in linux package in Fedora:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
It looks like TCP rx and tx checksum offloading is broken on the TB16 dock's
ethernet adapter. For example downloading a large file such as the Ubuntu ISO,
and then running an md5sum on it yields the incorrect md5sum. This is because
  rx-checksumming: on
  tx-checksumming: on
and both set to on by default.

Running sudo ethtool -K tx off rx off, allows the
download to complete correctly. This is very bad since this can cause
  very bad untrustworthy behavior.

This was conducted using an Dell Precision 5520 on Ubuntu 16.04+linux-
  generic-hwe-16.04-edge.

  Original Description:

Basically on Lenovo Y50-70 after installing Ubuntu 17.10, many users
  reported a corrupted BIOS.

It's not possible to save new settings in BIOS anymore and after
rebooting, the system starts with the old settings.

Moreover (and most important) USB booting is not possible anymore
since USB is not recognized. It's very serious, since our machines do
  not have a CDROM.

Lenovo forums at the moment are full of topics regading this issue.

  Thank you!!

ThinkPad X260 connecting external DisplayPort hangs system

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
Running Ubuntu 16.04 on a Lenovo ThinkPad X260 with Intel Skylake HD
Graphics 520, connecting an external monitor to the DisplayPort
connector causes the system to quickly hang. The system stops
responding to network pings, cannot switch consoles, and needs a hard
  reboot.

The external monitor does work when using a text console, and does not
always hang in the LightDM login screen, but starting up a desktop
  session will always hang.

This originally happened using a ThinkPad dock, and I tested it
further using an external DP monitor. This happens on 4.4.0-28-generic
  as well as mainline 4.6.3-040603-generic and 4.7.0-040700rc5-generic;
they all hang in a similar fashion.

I have attached a journalctl log from running 4.7.0-040700rc5-generic
and connecting the DP monitor while in a text console, before
switching to the graphical console and logging in. The system hangs
  after a series of:

kernel: WARNING: CPU: 3 PID: 2319 at
/home/kernel/COD/linux/drivers/gpu/drm/i915/intel_pm.c:3647

kernel: [drm:gen8_irq_handler [i915]] *ERROR* CPU pipe B FIFO underrun

The first warnings come immediately when connecting, and others when
  switching consoles and logging in.

Title:
Elantech Touchpad detects as PS/2 BYD TouchPad or as a PS/2 generic
  mouse

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
I have an Elantech Touchpad installed on my Lenovo Y700 laptop and I
can't make it work properly by any means. I tried to switch between
libinput and synaptics but this bug seems to affect any driver.

Usually, after a system upgrade all works properly till the moment I
plug in external mouse (Razer DeathAdder 3500DPI). After that touchpad
detected as either PS/2 BYD or PS/2 generic mouse or sometimes PS/2
  Elantech touchpad.

After some 5-6 reboots without plugging in external mouse the touchpad
finally starts to detect it as ETPS/2 Elantech touchpad.

Reloading psmouse module seems to cause no effect (or it does yet
after a minute touchpad stops working for a moment and then switches
to PS/2 in xinput). Multitouch stops working as well as tapping with
  two fingers.

I tried almost all the possible workarounds involving adding boot
options, installing elantech driver fixes etc.

  Help is appreciated.

The output of xinput as for now:

  $ xinput
  ⎡ Virtual core pointerid=2[master pointer (3)]
⎜ ↳ Virtual core XTEST pointer id=4[slave pointer
 (2)]
  ⎜ ↳ PS/2 BYD TouchPad id=14 [slave pointer
 (2)]

  lsinput
  /dev/input/event14

     vendor : 0x2

     name: "PS/2 BYD TouchPad"
     phys: "isa0060/serio1/input0"
     bits ev : EV_SYN EV_KEY EV_REL

  UPDATE:

Seems that forcing the psmouse to detect the touchpad as elantech
helps to fix problem temporarily. But it works only from time to time:

  $ sudo rmmod psmouse
  $ sudo modprobe psmouse force="elantech"

The change is substantial, can you ask the patch author and BTRFS
maintainers if it’s a good idea to backport it to stable Linux?

Apparently the original patch didn’t send for linux stable branch.

backport btrfs ssd mount option fix

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Hello,

It appears that all kernels before 4.14 had a problem with btrfs ssd
  mount option. According to
  https://btrfs.wiki.kernel.org/index.php/Gotchas#ssd_mount_option, it
has a negative impact on usability and lifetime of modern SSDs. Since
it is enabled by default when SSD is detected, it affects all systems
with SSD drives. Please backport this commit to normal and HWE
  kernels:

Bug description:
In 16.10 duplicity seemed to run out of memory. In 17.04 duplicity

Now in 17.10 there is a problem with duplicity again. It seems to get stuck
after a while. I can move the mouse and see the pointer move on the display but
nothing else works. Only way to get on is to power off (and power on again).

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1726934] Re: Elantech touchpad unresponsive in Ubuntu 17.10

2018-01-01 Thread Kai-Heng Feng
It should be fixed by latest mainline kernel.
Currently there is a patch missing in Artful kernel.

Title:
Elantech touchpad unresponsive in Ubuntu 17.10

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
I have upgraded to Ubuntu 17.10 on my Asus Vivobook X505BA laptop and
with the upgrade to Wayland full-time, all of the elantech issues from
a few years back are coming back with a vengeance. Upon upgrade, my
trackpad is no longer functional and I am forced to use an external
mouse. I don't have an extra mouse that I can just drag around with
the laptop, nor do I wish to purchase one to use when I have a
trackpad on the laptop itself. Dmesg doesn't show anything about the
driver failing to load and syslog shows nothing either. I know this is
a common issue with this kind of trackpad but I hope to see a fix soon
so I can go back to using Ubuntu normally

IIRC ELAN1200 should use hid-multitouch.

This is strange because this is a fresh installation so I didn't change any

that the icon changed when I started charging the laptop. That's why I think it
is a bug.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1661878] Re: [Asus UX360UA] Physical screen rotation is not detected

I think Unity doesn't support screen rotate. Please try latest Ubuntu or
Ubuntu-Gnome.

Title:
[Asus UX360UA] Physical screen rotation is not detected

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
I've just installed Ubuntu 16.04.1 in dualboot on top of an Asus
UX360UA, alongside with Windows 10. I've already installed the updates
  meanwhile.

This laptop has a 360º degree rotating screen. When I physically
rotate my screen, Windows (or some installed driver, I don't know)
detects that. Consequently, the image being displayed in the screen is
rotated 180º and the keyboard is blocked. However, Ubuntu doesn't do
nothing when I rotate the screen.

I think this is a bug because a fresh Ubuntu installation should recognise
these laptop features. I searched a little bit and it seems there are some
workarounds on this, but I guess Ubuntu installation should recognise this
automatically?

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1738490] Re: current boot config dims screen during initramfs

2018-01-01 Thread Kai-Heng Feng
That's because rootfs has systemd-backlight@.service to restore/save the
brightness value. Probably a good idea to do the same for initramfs.

** Also affects: initramfs-tools (Ubuntu)
   Importance: Undecided

current boot config dims screen during initramfs

Status in initramfs-tools package in Ubuntu:

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
This is a weird one. Shortly after moving to 17.10, my laptop has
started dimming its internal screen to minimum brightness at the start
of initramfs execution. shortly thereafter it restores it to normal
brightness, but that only happens *after* typing in encrypted
filesystem passwords, so the password dialogues are practically
invisible. Not sure why its doing this, but whatever's restoring the
brightness should do it before prompting for filesystem mounting so
  these prompts are actually visible.

  Lenovo 11e Input Freeze

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
We're been running into an issue that so far seems to be limited to our
Lenovo 11e laptops and Ubuntu 17.10.
On first boot, the touchpad and keyboard will work sporadically with random
keys occasionally being registered as being pressed. After some time, both the
touchpad and keyboard completely stop functioning. We've replicated the issue
on other 11e laptops to ensure it wasn't a hardware problem.

Touchpad and keyboard both work perfectly on Ubuntu 16.04.3

dmesg is showing a bunch of the following:

psmouse serio1: Touchpad at isa0060/serio1/input0 lost synchronization,
throwing 4 bytes away.
psmouse serio1: resync failed, issuing reconnect request
psmouse serio1: synaptics: unable to initialize device

  What we expect to happen:
Touchpad and Keyboard will allow user input

  What happened instead:
Touchpad and Keyboard register random input or don't function at all.

Fix: The issue was fixed in Kernel Version 4.13.0-21. But previous
affected machines still suffered from a broken BIOS.

Repair: Boot Linux and Install Kernel Version 4.14.9. Reboot into
Linux and BIOS should be restored to a working state.

  Thank you!!

2018-01-01 Thread Brad
@theyield/Ryan, does the touchpad function after you perform suspend+wake with
either kernel 4.14.x or 4.15 as reported in post #86 above?
What about after you perform these two terminal commands?..

I just thought I would add that I too am affect by this on my system:

SYNA3602 device on a YEPO 737A Laptop - Linux Mint 18.3 Cinnamon respun,
as OP describes. The touchpad doesn't work live, and has never worked
after install.

I'm currently on 4.15 RC6 which was respun into the install ISO via the
-u argument.

Touchpad works flawlessly in windows 10 of course.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1626283] Re: lenovo t420s very slow wifi after dist upgrade 14-16

2018-01-01 Thread Aleksei
sorry - The config above is not working as well. I mean - it is unstable - it
may give 35 MBit/s
or 0.5 MBit/s. No relation with '11n_disable' setting found. I tried several
kernels - 4.4.10 - but haven't been able to find stable working one - so the
question is still open

Bug description:
Description: An update to linux kernel on Ubuntu 17.10 that enabled
the intel-spi-* drivers made Insyde BIOS unusable. Main issues were
Settings being not stored, USB Boot impossible and EFI entries read-
  only.

Fix: The issue was fixed in Kernel Version 4.13.0-21. But previous
affected machines still suffered from a broken BIOS.

Repair: Boot Linux and Install Kernel Version 4.14.9. Reboot into
Linux and BIOS should be restored to a working state.

Moreover (and most important) USB booting is not possible anymore
since USB is not recognized. It's very serious, since our machines do
  not have a CDROM.

Lenovo forums at the moment are full of topics regading this issue.

  Thank you!!

  Original Description:

Basically on Lenovo Y50-70 after installing Ubuntu 17.10, many users
  reported a corrupted BIOS.

It's not possible to save new settings in BIOS anymore and after
rebooting, the system starts with the old settings.

Moreover (and most important) USB booting is not possible anymore
since USB is not recognized. It's very serious, since our machines do
  not have a CDROM.

Lenovo forums at the moment are full of topics regading this issue.

annoying "Call from" on my headset. My headset seems to think a

the audio will start to play and after a little while the "call from"
  voice talks over the audio.

Panasonic Toughbook CF-30 (specifically CF-30K, also known as "CF30",
"CF-30 Mk3", "CF-30 Mark 3", etc) touchpad is being detected as only a

Pointing and clicking (also tapping to click) works, but scrolling

This appears to be happening in the kernel, not in X.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1734147] Re: Ubuntu 17.10 corrupting BIOS - many LENOVO laptops models

2018-01-01 Thread Sachin Anand
I am using Lubuntu 17.10
Few week back I did this install and due to some requirement I wanted to change
OS. But to my bad luck the initial BIOS page itself is not coming and while
searching for the solution I got to know the big issue. Its not the way an OS
should behave. My Laptop is LENOVO Y500 45Q.
Either Lenovo or Ubuntu should come up with solution... every one is not that
equipped to do BIOS flash or some hardware changes by themselves. Hoping to get
some solution soon... :(

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1734147] Re: Ubuntu 17.10 corrupting BIOS - many LENOVO laptops models

2018-01-01 Thread serj.kzv
Hi Juan Felipe (hacktt),

I have got HP 15-ac159ur laptop and Ubuntu 17.10 is fine for me. All functions
except Hibernation work fine. Only one small problem with artefact in EFI that
I have been seeing by typing "efibootmgr" command.
I have fixed that according that article:
https://wiki.debian.org/GrubEFIReinstall

I am not sure but do you need 'System Diagnostics' to recover BIOS? According
article below you could recover BIOS by pressing and holding 'Win + B' during
booting to repair BIOS from USB Flash Drive (which you have to create with any
Windows OS):

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1734147] Re: Ubuntu 17.10 corrupting BIOS - many LENOVO laptops models

2018-01-01 Thread serj.kzv
Hi Juan Felipe (hacktt),

I have got HP 15-ac159ur laptop and Ubuntu 17.10 is fine for me. All functions
except Hibernation works fine.

Bug description:
Description: An update to linux kernel on Ubuntu 17.10 that enabled
the intel-spi-* drivers made Insyde BIOS unusable. Main issues were
Settings being not stored, USB Boot impossible and EFI entries read-
  only.

Fix: The issue was fixed in Kernel Version 4.13.0-21. But previous
affected machines still suffered from a broken BIOS.

Repair: Boot Linux and Install Kernel Version 4.14.9. Reboot into
Linux and BIOS should be restored to a working state.

Moreover (and most important) USB booting is not possible anymore
since USB is not recognized. It's very serious, since our machines do
  not have a CDROM.

Lenovo forums at the moment are full of topics regading this issue.

  Thank you!!

modprobe bcm2835-v4l2 crashes the system. I tried various thinks but
same. I could not use openCV to capture the images. However
raspicam_node (https://github.com/fpasteau/raspicam_node) able is
capturing images from the camera.

Bug description:
  Hello,
I've been running Raspberry Pi 3 with Ubuntu as described here
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ARM/RaspberryPi

I've installed Ubuntu 16.04 and then upgraded to 16.10 and have been
using this setup successfully since October up until last week.
Unfortunately one of the latest kernel updates broke the installation
and I found out the same happened for Ubuntu 16.04 LTS - and therefore
I can no longer run up-to-date Ubuntu installation (with updated
  kernel) on my RPI.

  I am getting this error:
Error image is not a fdt - must reset the board to recover

I also tried this but it didn't help me:
  https://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=28=168838

Now I know running Ubuntu on RPI3 this way is not officially
supported, but since Ubuntu Snappy is supported I thought someone here
could know what is going on.

  Thank you very much.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1626283] Re: lenovo t420s very slow wifi after dist upgrade 14-16

2018-01-01 Thread Aleksei
As I managed to solve the problem before and after updates I started
using latest kernel where the problem reveals again, I put my working
config here

First - this one - sudo vim /etc/modprobe.d/iwlwifi-disable11n.conf
having this one inside - options iwlwifi 11n_disable=0
is not affecting the wi-fi speed

Secondly, I've installed 3.19 kernel - and it works for me

GRUB config

1. Using grub-customizer, I've put 3.19 entry on top of menu list, to have it
being run with just one 'enter' key

2. I've put here - sudo gedit /etc/default/grub
the following - GRUB_DEFAULT="Ubuntu, with Linux 3.19.0-66-generic"

the speed is good - about 36 MBit/second for upload/download both

Hope it will help someone

Note, that the latest (4.4.23 kernel) have buggy slow wi-fi driver(0.5,
2 MBit/second)

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1734147] Re: Ubuntu 17.10 corrupting BIOS - many LENOVO laptops models

2018-01-01 Thread Mika Westerberg
Can someone who still has the problem try v4.15-rcX kernel instead? It
got few fixes for the atomic sequence handling and might explain why not
all systems recover.

Description: An update to linux kernel on Ubuntu 17.10 that enabled

Settings being not stored, USB Boot impossible and EFI entries read-
  only.

Fix: The issue was fixed in Kernel Version 4.13.0-21. But previous
affected machines still suffered from a broken BIOS.

Repair: Boot Linux and Install Kernel Version 4.14.9. Reboot into
Linux and BIOS should be restored to a working state.

Test Case: Fix has been verified by our HWE team on affected hardware.

Regression Potential: Minimal, it's unlikely anyone is actually doing

  Original Description:

Basically on Lenovo Y50-70 after installing Ubuntu 17.10, many users
  reported a corrupted BIOS.

It's not possible to save new settings in BIOS anymore and after
rebooting, the system starts with the old settings.

Moreover (and most important) USB booting is not possible anymore
since USB is not recognized. It's very serious, since our machines do
  not have a CDROM.

Lenovo forums at the moment are full of topics regading this issue.

  Thank you!!

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1734147] Re: Ubuntu 17.10 corrupting BIOS - many LENOVO laptops models

2018-01-01 Thread Leó Kolbeinsson
Happy New Year!

Acer Aspire E3-111-P605 with Insyde BIOS in legacy mode when updated to
lubuntu 17.10 resulting in the problem unable to boot from USB or save
changes in the BIOS.

My solution was to upgrade the kernel to 4.14.10. Still unable to make any
changes in BIOS.
However when booting GRUB2 and selecting "c" (entering prompt) and then "exit"
the Intel Undi PXE -2.1 (build 083)utility was invoked and wait for the PXE
utility to exit - then I could boot from USB and/or USB CD-ROM drives.

I found it interesting that when booting if I pressed "ESC" the attached
drives appeared on the BIOS info screen - however if I entered the BIOS
with "F2" - the BIOS reported only the Hard Drive and the Intel PXE as
available boot devices.
