Title:
Ubuntu kernels 4.10+ hard freeze on Thinkpad X230 about 10 minutes
  after a boot.

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
  Hi,

Any Ubuntu kernels since 4.10 hard freeze my X230 about 10 minutes
after the boot. I don't, unfortunately, have any logs, as usually the
system freezes before the logs sync to the disk. Immediately before
the freeze, iwlwifi disconnects and fails to connect back, spewing a
few messages about firmware errors, and then the whole system freezes.

The last kernel I can use successfully is Ubuntu 4.8 series.

it seems that the NVIDIA card doesn't get the memory the bios tells
the kernel it wants, it gets remapped and then the drivers fails.

My machine is ThinkPad S5 (with NVIDIA GTK 1050 Ti), I have disabled
the secure boot in the BIOS.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1756455] Re: Kernel 4.15.0-12 reboots instead of turning off on HP Spectre x360 13-ae004

2018-03-17 Thread Dmitry Malykhanov
Recent linux-firmware update (1.172 -> 1.173) somehow resolved this
issue, although I cannot spot anything relevant in the changelog.

Title:
Kernel 4.15.0-12 reboots instead of turning off on HP Spectre x360
  13-ae004

Status in linux-signed package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
Ubuntu 18.04, installed from beta 1 ISO + all updates to date

HP Spectre x360 13", model 13-ae004na, secure boot on, latest BIOS
F.15A, Ubuntu is the only system on disk.

When using kernel 4.15.0-12 the system does not power off but instead
reboots. Both halt -p from the command line and menu action leads to
reboot. Booting with previous kernel 4.15.0-10 resolves the issue,
system turns off power as expected.

I am not attaching any logs because I cannot see anything unusual
there, kern.log entries from 4.15.0-10 and 4.15.0-12 seems to be
identical (in fact, there is only one entry there "msr: Direct access
to MSR 1b0"). Please let me know what additional information you may
  need.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1753662] Re: [i40e] LACP bonding start up race conditions

2018-03-17 Thread Joseph Salisbury
It's good that the v4.12-rc3 with xenial configs was bad. It means we
should use Xenial configs when performing the bisect and not Artful
configs. I'll kick off another bisect and post the first test kernel.

happens at each provisioning with the default xenial kernel(4.4), but
not reproducible with HWE kernel(4.13). I'm using Intel X710 cards
  (Dell-branded).

Using the HWE kernel works as a workaround for short term, but it's
not ideal since 4.13 is not covered by Canonical Livepatch service.

  How to reproduce:
  1. configure LACP bonding with MAAS
  2. provision machines
  3. check the bonding status in /proc/net/bonding/bond*

  frequency of occurrence:
About 5 bond pairs in 22 pairs at each provisioning.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1756105] Re: X1 Carbon 6th gen S0i3 sleep broken

2018-03-17 Thread jacco
note that in previously mentioned thread on lenovo forum the workaround
used is to enable S3 by patching DSDT tables. for those interested: see
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=234913

it seems to me the root cause is not so much S3 state support is
missing, but that S0i3 isn't recognized/used by kernel.

have the same issue. tried latest mainline http://kernel.ubuntu.com

ZFS "partially filled holes lose birth time"

Status in zfs-linux package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in zfs-linux package in Debian:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
Note: This is different from Launchpad bug #1557151. This is another,
  similar, bug.

Bug description from Matt Ahrens at OpenZFS:
"If a ZFS object contains a hole at level one, and then a data block is
created at level 0 underneath that l1 block, l0 holes will be created.
However, these l0 holes do not have the birth time property set; as a
result, incremental sends will not send those holes.

Fix is to modify the dbuf_read code to fill in birth time data."

From pcd on IRC in #zfsonlinux:
"basically, what happens is this: if you zero out an entire l1 indirect
block's worth of data (several megabytes), we save space by storing that
entire indirect block as a single hole in an l2 indirect block with
birth time N. If you then modify some of the data under that, but not
all of it, when the l1 indirect block is filled back in with mostly
holes and some data blocks, the wholes will not have any"

  Fixed in ZoL here:

https://github.com/zfsonlinux/zfs/commit/bc77ba73fec82d37c0b57949ec29edd9aa207677

This has *not* been merged into a ZoL release yet, nor the release
  branch.

This is a very unfortunate bug because the fix only helps you moving forward.
A separate bug has been opened to propose a fix for that:
  https://www.illumos.org/issues/7175

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1653456] Re: ASUS G752VS: Touchpad and Fn keys not working (Ubuntu 16.04.1/16.10/17.04)

2018-03-17 Thread Kasimodo
Hi all.

I'm a noob in Linux and sorry for my very bad english. I have a G752VM (not VS)
but got same problem with same Touchpad (ELAN1203).
I noticed there is something weird. I use Ubuntu 16.04 LTS installed and
Touchpad doesn't work at all. BUT... if I start my G752VM with a LiveUSB key
16.04.3 LTS Ubuntu and suspend my Laptop and, then I wake up Touchpad works
like a charm.
So why does this Touchpad work with LiveUSB key and not when Ubuntu is
installed?

Hello, after experimenting few days ago with Ubuntu 16.04.1, 16.10 and
17.04, among other problems I found that touchpad and Fn keys (all
except volume control) doesn't work on my brand new ASUS G752VS.

It is very hard even to try Ubuntu 16.10 and 17.04 because of the
missing mouse pointer. This problem must be related to a video driver
because if after installing one is capable to install Nvidia drivers -
problem is solved. This problem doesn't exist both while trying and
  installing Ubuntu 16.04.1!

I'm currently on Windows 10, and this bug report is made from Ubuntu
  16.04.1 LiveCD.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1685528] Re: ZFS initramfs mounts dataset explicitly set not to be mounted, causing boot process to fail

ZFS initramfs mounts dataset explicitly set not to be mounted, causing
  boot process to fail

Status in zfs-linux package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Committed

Bug description:
  Per https://github.com/zfsonlinux/pkg-zfs/issues/221: the initramfs
zfs script might overrule canmount and mountpoint options for a
dataset, causing other mount operations and with them the boot process
  to fail.

Experienced this with Ubuntu Zesty. Xenial seems to ship with a
different zfs script for the initrd.

Work around when it happens: unmount the dataset that should not be
mounted, and exit the initramfs rescue prompt to resume booting.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1688890] Re: initramfs-zfs should support misc /dev dirs

2018-03-17 Thread Richard Laager
I need to do some testing, but we might want to consider using the cache
file. An approach (suggested to my by ryao, I think) was that we first
import the root pool read-only, copy the cache file out of it, export
the pool, and then import the pool read-write using the cache file.

Title:
initramfs-zfs should support misc /dev dirs

Status in zfs-linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Right now 'zfs-initramfs', i.e. /usr/share/initramfs-tools/scripts/zfs
does not support any other directory than /dev for "zpool import ...".
Therefore even if a pool gets created from a different directory like
/dev, say /dev/disk/by-id or /dev/chassis/SYS on next reboot /dev will
be used and thus zpool status will show the /dev/sd* etc. on
successful import. Beside that now a user does not see the original
names used in "zpool create ..." the unstable names like "/dev/sd*"
are shown, which is explicitly NOT recommended.

The following patch introduces the "pseudo" kernel param named "zdirs"
  - a comma separated list of dev dirs to scan on import - which gets
used by /usr/share/initramfs-tools/scripts/zfs to honor it.

Thanks Steve for the head up

my cpu is i5-6500 and it seems it should not be blacklisted now (at least the
request has been done):

http://lists-archives.com/linux-kernel/29038556-x86-spectre_v2-remove-0xc2-from-spectre_bad_microcodes.html

Initially i have been confused by the 20180312 vs 2017-11-16 output.

So that case needs some cleaning.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1753662] Re: [i40e] LACP bonding start up race conditions

2018-03-17 Thread Nobuto Murata
Ok, we see some differences with the three kernels. How do we want to
proceed from here?

v4.12-rc3 - bad (24 of 90 - 26.6%)
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.12-rc3/

v4.12-rc3 #201803151851 - relatively good (2 of 151 - 1.3%)
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~jsalisbury/lp1753662/v4.12-rc3/
(artful configs)

v4.12-rc3 #201803161156 - relatively bad (36 or 249 - 14.5%)
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~jsalisbury/lp1753662/v4.12-rc3-xenial-configs/
(xenial configs)

Title:
[i40e] LACP bonding start up race conditions

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged
Status in linux source package in Xenial:
  Triaged

Bug description:
When provisioning Ubuntu servers with MAAS at once, some bonding pairs
will have unexpected LACP status such as "Expired". It randomly
happens at each provisioning with the default xenial kernel(4.4), but
not reproducible with HWE kernel(4.13). I'm using Intel X710 cards
  (Dell-branded).

Using the HWE kernel works as a workaround for short term, but it's
not ideal since 4.13 is not covered by Canonical Livepatch service.

  How to reproduce:
  1. configure LACP bonding with MAAS
  2. provision machines
  3. check the bonding status in /proc/net/bonding/bond*

  frequency of occurrence:
About 5 bond pairs in 22 pairs at each provisioning.
