Title:
Bluetooth touchpad (Apple Magic Trackpad) disconnects every few
  minutes

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
I recently got an Apple's Magic Trackpad. I paired it with Ubuntu
18.04.2 LTS and worked out of the box, no special drivers needed.

However, I experience frequent disconnections that last a few seconds
(5-15 seconds usually), which are quite annoying, as the cursor stops
responding during that interval. The trackpad connects by itself after
that period. That usually happens every 20-40 minutes.

I use the onboard bluetooth device of my laptop. I also have, at the
same time, two more bluetooth devices (keyboard and mouse) and they do
not experience that issue, just the trackpad. On ocassion I use
bluetooth headphones which work just fine.

  First of all:

Using the command "bluetoothctl" I get the following every time I
  experience a disconnection:

  [CHG] Device F4:1B:A1:33:F9:8D Connected: no
  [CHG] Device F4:1B:A1:33:F9:8D Connected: yes

Checking "dmesg" I can see more information: (if I am not mistaken,
  this shows 4 disconnections)

Bug description:
Whenever I plug in my Sennheiser HD1 Wired headphones with mic, I start
hearing a static/electric (some internal?) sound if the volume isn't muted.
Something similar occurs with my other earbuds with mic, just much quieter and
less noticable. It works fine on Windows 10 running on the same machine, and on
my Android phone. I don't notice is when something is playing, but the
frequency of the sound changes when I play something, then pause it, the
background noise will sound slightly different.
This is from an installed Ubuntu 18.10. I have tried booting 18.10 Live USB
and 18.04.1 LTS Live USB, and the issue still occurs. I have tried playing with
alsamixer and pavucontrol settings, and nothing fixed this background noise.

Bug description:
Bug report has been generated on a partially working configuration.
That allows ubuntu-bug to do more work.

USB-Audio Connection on Bowers & Wilkens PX Bluetooth Headphones
started working when upgrading kernel from 4.13 to 4.15 series. Then
it suddenly stopped working again on newer kernels. The bug report has
been generated on the latest working mainline kernel 4.15.7. All newer
kernels have some usb quirks in place, which should fix the playback
sample rates to 48 kHz. The quirk seems not to be working correctly
and hinder the audio system to recognize the USB-device as a sound
  device.

The Headphones work on kernels before 4,15.7 when manually configuring
pulseaudio to a default samplerate of 48 kHz.

PX Headphones are on the newest firmware level.

// this bug was reported for 18.04.
// I had just had it occur (first time) on 18.10
// new details will be comment @ end

my box is 18.04 (was 17.10 installed; standard Ubuntu with MATE & XFCE
  desktops added)

I sleep my XFCE (xubuntu) machine rather than turning it off at night.

Today as with yesterday morning, instead of getting the locker-screen
after hitting the power-button to wake my machine, i get a blank
screen with a RADEON two-line text message top left on screen which
appear only momentarily as screen is erased and I get the
  login/greeter screen.

(it's happened 4-5 times, but does NOT happen every time)

I can login fine, but my xfce session is new.

I have grep'd for the message I see (yesterday & today), but can't
find it as i usually recall little but the radeon word...

Bug description:
I have a fresh install of 18.10 on an old Thinkpad x220. Everything
works fine with the internal display or an external Dell G2410
(1920x1080) connected via VGA. But when I try to switch to an external
BenQ PD2710QC (2560x1440) I only see the screen for a few seconds at a
time and then it flashes to black. This happens consistently for
  minutes--it never "settles down".

I've tried the default configuration as well as copying xorg.conf from
  /usr/share/doc/xserver-xorg-video-intel into /etc/x11. I've tried both
xorg configurations with nomodeset in the bootloader and without. I
have not been able to find any configuration that allows this external
  DisplayPort display to work.

The same hardware combination works fine in Windows 10.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1813423] Re: Frequent system freezing with i915 error "*ERROR* Atomic update failure on pipe A"

Title:
Frequent system freezing with i915 error "*ERROR* Atomic update
  failure on pipe A"

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Status in xorg-server package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
My system keeps freezing on a brand new install of Kubuntu 18.10,
  always with the kern.log error "[drm:intel_pipe_update_end [i915]]
*ERROR* Atomic update failure on pipe A (start=4120234 end=4120235)
  time 486 us, min 763, max 767, scanline start 760, end 783"

I think it's probably a duplicate of these bugs which were closed unresolved:
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/1660619 (closed as it was
on an older version of Ubuntu)
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/1671975 (closed because
it was a duplicate of the first bug)

It happens far more frequently if I have desktop effects turned on,
and far less frequently when using a live USB key (at always happens
eventually though. Usually once every few hours.)

Please advise how I can help triage / test. My system is a new install
now, so I'm perfectly willing to modify / reinstall to help testing
(I've reinstalled 5 times to test things, but never managed to find a
  solution)

  [SRU Justification]

  == Impact ==
Some upstream stable change modified the bpf selftest to use a function that
probes for existing eBPF program types. However that function does not exist in
the 5.0 kernel sources.

  == Fix ==
Picking two additional changes from upstream (which only modify the tools
sub-directory), allows to compile the selftests again.

  == Risk of Regression ==
Since the kernel itself is not touched, the risk is low.

  == Testcase ==
With build-essential installed and the Disco kernel tree cloned:

  cd tools/testing/selftests/
  TARGET=net make

  ---

This test will failed to build on 5.0.0-16 Disco.

  5.0.0-16 Disco + 5.0.0-15 source code - build OK
  5.0.0-16 Disco + 5.0.0-16 source code - Failed

Bisect shows this one e38969c9 (selftests/bpf: skip verifier tests for
unsupported program types) in our tree is the cause (upstream commit:
  8184d44c)

Which uses a "recently introduced bpf_probe_prog_type()" to skip test.
And we don't have it implemented.

Title:
segfault when CCD are present in two different HOG services

Status in Bluez Utilities:
  Unknown
Status in bluez package in Ubuntu:
  Won't Fix

Bug description:
  Hello everyone,

We are currently developing a device that contains two HID services.
That device, as it is right now, is properly functioning on Windows & Android.
However, when pairing the device on Linux running bluez 5.50 we do get
segfaults (see attached files).
Our bluetooth device has 4 services : 1 battery service, 2 HID Over Gatt
services and 1 device information service.
With trial and error, we managed to find that we wouldn't get any crash as
long as only 1 HOG service was present.

Here's the interesting part. The two HOG services are made as follows:
  - standard keyboard over gatt: protocole mode / report map / 1 INPUT report /
boot INPUT + OUTPUT / HID information / HID Control point
  - raw HID over gatt : report map / 1 INPUT report / 1 OUTPUT report / HID
information / HID control point

Looking at the write_ccc in the call stacks we wondered if the
callbacks subscribing to notifications for the INPUT reports were
  causing this issue.

We therefore changed the raw HID over gatt (and its report map) to
remove the INPUT report and change it into 1 OUTPUT report (leading to
  2 OUTPUT reports): no crash.

We therefore hypothesize that the segfault occurs when subscribing to
notification on a second HOG service...

  ./include/linux/compiler.h:193:1: error: ‘-mindirect-branch’ and

(This happens with any kernel modules.)

This appears to be due to the changes in 9.1.0-3ubuntu1 enabling -fcf-
protection by default on 19.10's gcc-9.

Switching to gcc-8 allows compilation to proceed.

  WORKAROUND:

  sudo ln -fs gcc-8 /usr/bin/gcc

  [Fix]

  [Test]
Verified on Dell machine which had this issue.

  [Regression Potential]
Low, the 2 commits make it always use dynamic adapter-numbers which does not
make any difference in most cases and in the one case where it does make a
difference the behavior change is desirable because the old behavior caused an
oops.

I don't see how we created another problem. We changed the default,
that's all. We thought the new default would be more suitable for more
users. Clearly not everyone will agree with the default - that's the
nature of defaults, and why the behaviour is configurable.

If you think that a different default would be better for Ubuntu, by all
means let's discuss that, as I described by suggesting a venue for that
discussion in the previous comment. But it doesn't follow that a default
not suitable in your particular situation is a problem in general.

If on the other hand the problem you're describing is not a matter of
the default configuration, then please file your own bug with specific
details.

James Rice of Jump Networks noticed that there is a screen-blanker

James notes that this blanking is not enabling DPMS power saving
(thereby negating any power-saving benefit), and is simply turning the
screen content blank. This means that the crash output is invisible
which is unhelpful on a server (virtual or otherwise).

Ideally the screen should (at a minimum) be turned on and unblanked at
the point of an OOPs/crash being printed.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1767568] Re: Console DPMS is not enabled by default in Ubuntu Server 18.04

2019-07-21 Thread Robie Basak
Thank you for taking the time to write this up and helping to make
Ubuntu better.

As far as I understand, some of you consider this to be a matter of the
default configuration shipped by Ubuntu, rather than kernel DPMS
functionality itself not working when configured to do so.

Others seem to be reporting that kernel DPMS functionality does not work
at all.

I'm unclear which is which, but the original reporter described this
problem as solved in comment 24 and that was based on the default
configuration, not on non-functional blanking as required when
configured. On that basis, I'm marking this particular bug, as reported
and suggested by the original reporter, as Invalid.

If you have a problem getting some specific blanking functionality to
work *when configured to do so*, please file a new, separate bug for
that, making it clear what you think isn't working (blanking or DPMS)
and describing exactly how you have configured your system such that you
believe it should work.

If you object to Ubuntu's *default configuration* as changed in the
resolution to bug 869017, then please start a discussion on that on the
mailing list (https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server)
or on the community forum (https://community.ubuntu.com/c/server) and,
following discussion, the Ubuntu Server Team will make a final decision
on what the default should be (I'm claiming this decision for the Ubuntu
Server Team since this is clearly a server question since it's outside
the scope of Ubuntu Desktop). You can file a bug to have the default
changed if you like, but since we already made the decision to change
the default in bug 869017, we're only going to mark it Won't Fix pending
further discussion as a decision was already previously made. Otherwise
we'll just end up flip-flopping between defaults every release, which is
clearly bad for everyone. The better approach would be to seek consensus
considering both sides which would be better done in a general
discussion and not a bug that presumes a conclusion by only considering
one side of the discussion.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 869017] Re: Ubuntu server enables screenblanking, concealing crashdumps (DPMS is not used)

2019-07-21 Thread atterdag
I have to concur that it must this change is really a detriment to
people that still use Ubuntu on physical servers - i.e. running
OpenStack hosts. Fixing one problem by creating another problem is
really poor problem management.

Bug description:
James Rice of Jump Networks noticed that there is a screen-blanker
  enabled on Ubuntu Server.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1834085] Re: Bluetooth touchpad (Apple Magic Trackpad) disconnects every few minutes

2019-07-21 Thread whochismo
Hi again, I have been away for a few days. I have been trying now, after
having uninstalled tlp the other day (and making sure it is indeed the
case), and using the kernel 5.2.0-050200rc7-generic #201906300430, I
have experienced the issue at the 13 minute mark.

I have attached the output of the dmesg command in case it could be
useful.

** Attachment added: "dmesg.txt"

Title:
Bluetooth touchpad (Apple Magic Trackpad) disconnects every few
  minutes

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
I recently got an Apple's Magic Trackpad. I paired it with Ubuntu
18.04.2 LTS and worked out of the box, no special drivers needed.

However, I experience frequent disconnections that last a few seconds
(5-15 seconds usually), which are quite annoying, as the cursor stops
responding during that interval. The trackpad connects by itself after
that period. That usually happens every 20-40 minutes.

I use the onboard bluetooth device of my laptop. I also have, at the
same time, two more bluetooth devices (keyboard and mouse) and they do
not experience that issue, just the trackpad. On ocassion I use
bluetooth headphones which work just fine.

  First of all:

Using the command "bluetoothctl" I get the following every time I
  experience a disconnection:

  [CHG] Device F4:1B:A1:33:F9:8D Connected: no
  [CHG] Device F4:1B:A1:33:F9:8D Connected: yes

Checking "dmesg" I can see more information: (if I am not mistaken,
  this shows 4 disconnections)

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1807974] Re: Wireless regularly breaking (ath10k firmware crashed!) after upgrade to Cosmic

2019-07-21 Thread Mike Meehan
Ok, looks like I was still running an older firmware version. I upgraded by:

Checking out the ath10k firmware repo
https://github.com/kvalo/ath10k-firmware.git
Copying the latest firmware for my card from
ath10k-firmware/QCA6174/hw3.0/4.4.1.c3/firmware-6.bin_WLAN.RM.4.4.1.c3-00035
 to /lib/firmware/ath10k/QCA6174/hw3.0/firmware-6.bin
Rebooting
Now I'm on WLAN.RM.4.4.1.c3-00035

$ sudo ethtool -i wlp2s0
driver: ath10k_pci
version: 5.0.0-20-generic
firmware-version: WLAN.RM.4.4.1.c3-00035
expansion-rom-version:
bus-info: :02:00.0
supports-statistics: yes
supports-test: no
supports-eeprom-access: no
supports-register-dump: no
supports-priv-flags: no

Title:
Wireless regularly breaking (ath10k firmware crashed!) after upgrade
  to Cosmic

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
I have a Dell XPS 13 9370 developer edition (Ubuntu version) running
Cosmic. A handful of times per day, my wireless stops working ("?"
appears in the icon in Network Manager). Turning wireless off and then
on again, or suspending and waking the machine up, makes the wireless
  work again.

  dmesg output is as follows:

The storage testcase is failing on i386. Running the testcase
  manually, it hangs at:

  systemd-229/debian/tests$ sudo ./storage
  test_luks_by_devname (__main__.CryptsetupTest)
LUKS device by plain device name, empty ... Please enter passphrase for disk
testcrypt1!

Looking at the storage testcase, on function start_password_agent(),
it expects the 'disk scsi_debug' string on the systemd ask-password
  file, however the contains:

Message=Please enter passphrase for disk testcrypt1!

That doesn't seems to happen on other architectures. On amd64, the
  testcase output is:

  systemd-229/debian/tests$ sudo ./storage
  test_luks_by_devname (__main__.CryptsetupTest)
LUKS device by plain device name, empty ... Please enter passphrase for disk
scsi_debug (testcrypt1)!
  ok

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Similar to bug
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1579984 the MAC
address pass through does not work with a Lenovo Thunderbolt 3
  Workstation Dock.

The dock's network port is recognized and working but it has its own
MAC address even though MAC Address pass through is enabled in the
  BIOS.

This is the dock in question:

  https://www.lenovo.com/us/en/accessories-and-monitors/top-tech
  /Thunderbolt-WS-230W-dock-US/p/40AN0230US

and the laptop is a Lenovo P1. Debug files attached.

Please let me know if further info is required.

  Thanks!
