[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1854798] Re: Synaptics s3203 touchpad not working after update to kernel 4.15.0-72-generic

2019-12-31 Thread Cliff Wong
Nilesh's disabling of the i2c hid mod works. But on my hardware (dell xps 9333,
i7) while fixing the TouchPad, this fix kills the touchscreen mouse input.
Less of 2 evils for now.

Synaptics s3203 touchpad not working after update to kernel
  4.15.0-72-generic

  [Fix]
After applied commit "Input: synaptics-rmi4 - avoid processing unknown
  IRQs",
  no irq response from touchpad.
This commit is depended on commit:
"Input: synaptics-rmi4 - convert irq distribution to irq_domain"

  [Test]
Verified on hardware, tests results are good.

  [Regression Potential]
  Low.
Fix bug that introduced by stable release update.

2nd and 3rd patches are fixes for the 1st patch.
These commits are already included by eoan kernel, so bionic 4.15 only.

I think you're right that it's probably the kernel. I'm having trouble
changing that, but when I get it done I'll update.

Also, no I'm not using bluetooth. The sound issues happen whether I'm
using an audio interface or the onboard sound.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1856161] Re: Thunderbolt dock fails to connect USB devices

2019-12-31 Thread Oded Arbel
The `logitech-hidpp-device` is the Logitech unified receiver I have
connected to the dock. It always generates lots of error messages like
this, even when connected directly to the computer's built-in USB port.

There's another Logitech unified receiver connected to the computer
itself, for the mouse that travels with the laptop, and that doesn't do
this behavior, it just looks like this (w/o debug logs):

Dec 31 17:11:42 vesho kernel: usb 1-1: New USB device found, idVendor=046d,
idProduct=c52b, bcdDevice=12.10

According to fwupdmgr, they are both running an up to date firmware
(both got updated recently, though they have a different
"VersionBootloader" where the OK one has "BOT01.02_B0014" and the
problematic one has "BOT01.02_B0015".

Interestingly enough, at one point I got the "unknown event type 15"
error from lp1766076 immediately when plugging in the problematic
receiver to the dock, but I didn't manage to reproduce that.

I'm going to try to work without the problematic receiver for a bit and
see if things improve.

Title:
Thunderbolt dock fails to connect USB devices

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Using Ubuntu eoan fully updated with kernel 5.3.0-24-generic on a Dell
Precision 5520. When connecting a Dell Thunderbolt dock TB16, the USB
bus connects very slowly (15~20 seconds) and sometimes does not
connect at all and a failure is reported in dmesg:

[ 117.834621] xhci_hcd :0e:00.0: xHCI host not responding to stop
endpoint command.
  [ 117.850643] xhci_hcd :0e:00.0: Host halt failed, -110
  [ 117.850644] xhci_hcd :0e:00.0: xHCI host controller not responding,
assume dead
  [ 117.850679] xhci_hcd :0e:00.0: HC died; cleaning up
  [ 117.850717] xhci_hcd :0e:00.0: Timeout while waiting for configure
endpoint command

The slow connection seems to be a feature of the current updated
firmware - the computer was not used for ~6 months due to a battery
issue that was fixed, and after fixing the battery a new firmware was
installed using the MS-Windows Dell software update utility. Both on
Linux and MS-Windows the process of connecting the Thunderbolt dock
completes after a much longer time than it used to in the beginning of
  the year.

On the face of it it seems that the longer init process now hits
timeouts in the xhci_hcd driver and depending on the exact timing
often causes the xhci_hcd to give up and drop the USB Thunderbolt bus.
This happens about 50% of the time, when connecting the Dock when the
system is running, and a bit less when the system is booted or resumed
from sleep when the dock is already connected.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1836730] Re: Raspberry Pi 3 brcmfmac error (brcmfmac43455-sdio.bin & brcmfmac43430-sdio.bin)

2019-12-31 Thread Jesus Munoz
I have just upgraded the package "linux-firmware" to version 1.173.14 and it
doesn't rewrite the files /lib/firmware/brcm/brcmfmac43455-sdio.bin and
/lib/firmware/brcm/brcmfmac43430-sdio.bin
Therefore, I think this issue has already been solved.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1856161] Re: Thunderbolt dock fails to connect USB devices

2019-12-31 Thread Oded Arbel
And now, I managed to get a repro of the stated problem: USB controller
fails to complete initialization when connecting the thunderbolt cable.

This was 100% reproduceable for a few runs (logs 1 through 5), and only
stopped reproducing when I removed an Android device that was sitting at
the end of the USB chain - this is log 6 that successfully completed
setup.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1856161] Re: Thunderbolt dock fails to connect USB devices

2019-12-31 Thread Oded Arbel
Attached kernel log of trying to recover from lp1766076 and failing.

The log starts at the point where we do `echo -n $id >
/sys/bus/pci/drivers/xhci_hcd/bind` at 13:05:44, and the driver gives up
at 13:05:55.

I'm actually not sure how relevant this is to this issue...

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1856161] Re: Thunderbolt dock fails to connect USB devices

2019-12-31 Thread Oded Arbel
With the `dyndbg` flag, I can't seem to reproduce the problem: I tried
to connect and disconnect the cable a few times as well as rebooting
(which was almost 100% guaranteed to cause this issue).

I attached logs of the successful thunderbolt connection while running
and a boot log with the dock already connected. There are things there
that seemed to me like error messages that might be interesting
regardless?

I'll continue using the `dyndbg` flag and will report later this week if
the problem has been reproduced (I connect the dock a could of times a
day, usually when the computer is already on, but sometimes when it is
suspended or off), or whether enabling the debug flag is a workaround
:-p

Bug description:
Using Ubuntu eoan fully updated with kernel 5.3.0-24-generic on a Dell

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1857413] Re: mce: ras: When inject 1bit ecc error, there is no mce log recorded in the dmesg

2019-12-31 Thread Po-Hsu Lin
Thanks for testing!
I will SRU this to the Disco kernel.

https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/kernel-team/2019-December/106569.html

** Description changed:

- Using Linux kernel, When inject 1bit ecc error, there are some mce log
- recorded in the dmesg.like:
+ == SRU Justification ==
+ With the 5.0 Disco kernel, the kernel cannot record the mce log while
+ injecting 1bit ecc error.
+
+ == Fix ==
+ * 09cbd219 (RAS/CEC: Increment cec_entered under the mutex lock)
+ * de0e0624 (RAS/CEC: Check count_threshold unconditionally)
+
+ Commit de0e0624 is the real fix for this issue, 09cbd219 is a fix to
+ avoid race condition, and it can make the latter become a clean
+ cherry-pick.
+
+ These have been landed on newer kernels.
+
+ == Test ==
+ Test kernel could be found here:
+
+ Verified by the bug reporter, fan jinke, the patched kernel can log
+ the error correctly.
+
+ == Regression Potential ==
+ Low, changes are limited to the RAS Correctable Errors Collector. And
+ the fix has been verified as working as expected.
+
+
+ == Original Bug Report ==

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1845046] Re: Bluetooth headphones/speaker such as Sony WH-1000XM3 default to low quality headset mode and fails to switch to A2DP when selected

2019-12-31 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Verified fixed in BlueZ 5.52 (or 5.51), so the fix is in Ubuntu 20.04.

I'm not sure what commit(s) in BlueZ did the trick but if you are using
Ubuntu 19.10 and want the fix then please just download these packages:

https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/bluez/5.52-0ubuntu2/+build/18277594/+files/bluez_5.52-0ubuntu2_amd64.deb

https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/bluez/5.52-0ubuntu2/+build/18277594/+files/libbluetooth3_5.52-0ubuntu2_amd64.deb

https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/bluez/5.52-0ubuntu2/+build/18277594/+files
/bluez-cups_5.52-0ubuntu2_amd64.deb

https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/bluez/5.52-0ubuntu2/+build/18277594/+files
/bluez-obexd_5.52-0ubuntu2_amd64.deb

and install them together:

  dpkg -i *.deb

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1857760] Re: Raspberry Pi 4 loose Wifi connection when connecting external SSD

2019-12-31 Thread Sam
The "4Go board" is the Raspberry Pi 4 Modebl B with (with 4Go RAM) :
https://www.raspberrypi.org/products/raspberry-pi-4-model-b/ . Sorry if
it wasn't clear enough.

The UGREEN case was bought on Amazon :
https://www.amazon.fr/gp/product/B07D2BHVBD

I don't have the UGREEN packaging, but according to product number on
Amazon description is should be : https://www.ugreen.com/product
/type_c_to_sata_external_hard_drive_enclosure-en.html

If I plug an USB key on either USB2 or USB3 there is no problem.

Raspberry Pi 4 loose Wifi connection when connecting external SSD

Status in linux-raspi2 package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
When I connect an external SSD (Samsung 850 EVO 500 Go in a UGREEN USB
3.1 case) on my Raspberry Pi 4 (4Go) the Wifi stop working. It is easy
to reproduce, either en USB3 or USB2 connectors.

The SSD is mounted, only the Wifi fails.

The problem does not occurs on a fresh Rasbian.

The problem does not occurs if I connect the SSD case on my keyboard
(a R.Pi keyboard including a USB hub). Only if I connect the SSD
  directly on the R.Pi.

When I disconnect the SSD case, the Wifi generally gets back, but
sometimes I had to set the wifi OFF then ON (through gnome gui
tooling). I don't have to reboot.

Re: [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1857821] Re: External HDMI monitor audio always reported as "unplugged"

2019-12-31 Thread gratefulfrog
Hi!

Thanks for the tip.

When I ran my PC on the 18.04 live OS, I noticed that by plugging the HDMI
cable on the normal HDMI port, that HDMI*2* was indicated as *plugged*.

Later when I went back to the installed 16.04, the HDMI2 port was indicated
as unplugged (all the ports were) but it still worked correctly, sending
sound and video to the HDMI monitor.

Although odd, this works so I will wait to upgrade until I have a backup
system available.

As to trying the v5 kernels, in the past they were not compatible with my
v4 system so I will also wait on that as well.

In summary, I learned that :

   - the standard HDMI connector maps to port HDMI2
   - the mini display connector maps to port HDMI1
   - despite being indicated as "unplugged" in the pulseaudio volume
control, the HDMI2 port works properly.

Thank you for all your help - this is a great improvement!

I hope you and all the Ubuntu team have a happy new year!
Cheers,
Bob

External HDMI monitor audio always reported as "unplugged"

  Fix Released

Bug description:
  Hello my Ubuntu friends,

I can no longer play sound over my external HDMI connected TV.

The image displays perfectly, but all the HDMI output devices are
  listed as "unplugged"

I have spent a huge amount of time trying every solution that Internet
searching will bring but this has changed nothing.

I have tired all available video drivers, including Xorg and NVIDEA
  396.26, 340.107, and 384.130.

This failure is recent because in the past I could play both audio and
  video through the HDMI connector.

The laptop is dual boot with Windows 10 and the HDMI works perfectly
on that OS, although I rarely use it...

I am wondering if upgrading my Xubuntu to the latest LTS could
potentially solve this issue, but I fear such an update since I depend
on this computer and an outage would be very hard for me...

  Any thoughts would be great.

  Thanks for making Linux great!

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1856161] Re: Thunderbolt dock fails to connect USB devices

2019-12-31 Thread Kai-Heng Feng
Can you please boot with kernel parameter "dyndbg='file drivers/usb/*

shouldn't be included.

Bug description:
Bluetooth HSP/HFP audio quality is poor on Ubuntu comparative to all
other major platforms (Windows, MacOS, ChromeOS, Android, iOS).

Modern Bluetooth headsets (such as the Bose QC series headphones, many
others) are capable of using HFP 1.6 with mSBC 16kHz audio encoding.
As it currently stands, Ubuntu defaults to only supporting HSP
headsets using 8kHz CVSD, and is incapable of supporting HFP 1.6 at
  this time.

The ChromiumOS team recently tackled this issue -
  https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=843048

Their efforts may assist in bringing this to Ubuntu, however it
appears that there are quite a lot of differences considering they
have developed their own audio server solution etc.

The Bluetooth Telephony Working Group published the HFP 1.6 spec in
  May 2011 -
  https://www.bluetooth.org/docman/handlers/downloaddoc.ashx?doc_id=238193

Patches have been proposed in the past for this issue to the kernel
  and PulseAudio:

  PulseAudio: https://patchwork.freedesktop.org/patch/245272/
  Kernel: https://www.spinics.net/lists/linux-bluetooth/msg76982.html

It appears that the Chromium OS team applied the same kernel patch:

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1845046] Re: Bluetooth headphones/speaker default to low quality headset mode and fails to switch to A2DP when selected

2019-12-31 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Progress, and some bad news... Testing with Sony WH-1000XM3 I can
reproduce the bug easily. But it's not a recent regression if at all.
The same bug occurs in an original Ubuntu 18.04 install without any
updates.

I'm tempted to clarify that Sony WH-1000XM3 is our main test case here.
Any future fix might benefit multiple different models, but it seems the
WH-1000XM3 is presently very popular and is what the original
reporter(s) of three quarters of these bug reports are using.
