[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1863407] Re: Lenovo Ideapad L340 screen backlight stuck at maximum brightness

2020-02-29 Thread Elijah Rockers
No change. /sys/class/backlist has acpi_video0 listed.

keyboard backlight controls do modify 'brightness' file, but there is no
change to the backlight.

iASL Warning: There were 6 external control methods found during
disassembly, but only 0 were resolved (6 unresolved). Additional
ACPI tables may be required to properly disassemble the code. This
resulting disassembler output file may not compile because the
disassembler did not know how many arguments to assign to the
unresolved methods. Note: SSDTs can be dynamically loaded at
runtime and may or may not be available via the host OS.

To specify the tables needed to resolve external control method
references, the -e option can be used to specify the filenames.
   Example iASL invocations:
   iasl -e ssdt1.aml ssdt2.aml ssdt3.aml -d dsdt.aml
   iasl -e dsdt.aml ssdt2.aml -d ssdt1.aml
   iasl -e ssdt*.aml -d dsdt.aml

In addition, the -fe option can be used to specify a file containing
control method external declarations with the associated method
argument counts. Each line of the file must be of the form:
   External (, MethodObj, )
   Invocation:
   iasl -fe refs.txt -d dsdt.aml

I've installed this kernel, but haven't rebooted into it. I noticed
while installing it, I got a zillion messages:

  depmod: ERROR: ../libkmod/libkmod.c:515 lookup_builtin_file() could
not open builtin file
'/lib/modules/5.4.0-17-generic/modules.builtin.bin'

Both linux-modules-5.4.0-17-generic and
linux-modules-extra-5.4.0-17-generic were installed, so I'm not sure
what's gone wrong here.

Title:
  swap storms kills interactive use

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Hello, several times since upgrading to focal from 19.04 I've found my
computer entirely unresponsive for periods of twenty or thirty
seconds. No mouse movement, no keyboard input, the screen output does
  not change.

My computer was using swap space and despite very slow writeout speeds
well below what the NVME drive can handle, the computer was unusable.

I've captured some vmstat 1 output and top output that I started
collecting during the event. (Normally one very long painful period is
followed by several shorter periods of uselessness.)

  Thanks

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1854413] Re: Backlight adjustments shows OSD but does not change anything on Samsung OLED panel

2020-02-29 Thread Kyle Altendorf
I haven't had a chance to try these out and I'm not sure how to track
these changes through the various repositories and branches but for the
record there are some other commits in drm/i915 that are claimed to fix
the issue. I'll report back when I get a chance to patch these into
5.3.0-40-generic (which, as a side note, fixes the black screen after
resuming from suspend issue on the P1 Gen 2).

fde7266fb2f6 drm/i915: Fix eDP DPCD aux max backlight calculations
79946723092b drm/i915: Assume 100% brightness when not in DPCD control mode
662884a9ad99 drm/i915: Fix DPCD register order in
intel_dp_aux_enable_backlight()
9ac7d53d70a2 drm/i915: Auto detect DPCD backlight support by default

d2a4bb6f8bc8 drm/i915: Don't use VBT for detecting DPCD backlight

Title:
Backlight adjustments shows OSD but does not change anything on
  Samsung OLED panel

Status in Linux:
  Unknown
Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
When running Ubuntu with linux-image-5.3.0-23-generic, mainline
5.3.13, or latest 5.4+ my Lenovo ThinkPad P1 Gen 2 with a Samsung OLED
panel is unable to change the backlight brightness. The buttons
trigger the on-screen display and move the bar but the actual display
brightness does not change. With the kernel option
i915.enable_dpcd_backlight=1 it does make the backlight change but
erratically. For example moving through the range you get stuff like
off, medium bright, dim, bright, medium, off. This does work in
Ubuntu linux-image-4.15.0-1059-oem. It seems the following commits in
  particular make the difference.

UBUNTU: SAUCE: i915: intel_dp_aux_backlight: Fix max backlight calculations

https://git.launchpad.net/~canonical-kernel/ubuntu/+source/linux-oem/+git/eoan/commit/?h=oem=ff39163c455f31005e2709a2006a7605b3d8a05f

UBUNTU: SAUCE: drm/i915: customize DPCD brightness control for specific panel

https://git.launchpad.net/~canonical-kernel/ubuntu/+source/linux-oem/+git/eoan/commit/?h=oem=cf7286b44a6e27967f5ed134c4492dd17bde118a

It has been explained to me that these OEM changes are unlikely to be
directly ported into -generic images but it seems relevant to document
the issue. I ported the above commits to the latest linux mainline
kernel and am running that (other than while reporting this issue).
This was in part because >= 5.3.12 fixes another issue with this
hardware where the screen remains black after a resume
  (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1854177). I
  have filed https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=205699.

https://github.com/altendky/linux/commit/395eb4b85f6a0f85061c0598247727de0d9316f6

https://github.com/altendky/linux/commit/c2dc38e6aadf3d979bea83e382a1b119574df7af

  Built with:

  git clean -fdx && cp /boot/config-5.3.0-23-generic .config && yes '' |
  make oldconfig && make clean && make -j `getconf _NPROCESSORS_ONLN`
  deb-pkg LOCALVERSION=-altendky-backlight

Note that the use of DEVICE_ID_ANY is likely bad and the correct ID
for this panel should be identified. I wanted to first confirm it
worked before bothering to figure out which ID was needed there and
  how to get it.

I have naively ported these patches. While I have done embedded C for
years and some hardware design... I am not familiar with Linux kernel
development nor any details of controlling this hardware.

Title:
Black screen after resume from suspend on Lenovo ThinkPad P1 Gen 2

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
Present testing has focused on closing the laptop lid and reopening
it. The laptop suspends as expected and resumes as expected (existing
ssh sessions start working again) except that the display remains
black and calls such as `xset -display :0 dpms force on` hang. The
screen remains blank sSometimes for a few minutes, sometimes for many.
In the example log it was 10 minutes and a few seconds before the
display turned back on. One time trying to capture a log of the
recovery I gave up after 70 minutes. While the display is black
`/var/log/Xorg.0.log` repeats the following lines once per second.

  [ 119.384] (WW) modeset(0): hotplug event: connector 86's link-state is
BAD, tried resetting the current mode. You may be leftwith a black screen if
this fails...
[ 119.386] (II) modeset(0): EDID vendor "SDC", prod id 16705
[ 119.386] (II) modeset(0): Printing DDC gathered Modelines:

3920 4160 2160 2164 2168 2184 +hsync -vsync (131.0 kHz eP)

This stops when the display turns on and no other messages are logged.

The journalctl log has a much longer repeated sequence of messages. I
haven't confirmed exact matching of the whole repeated block but
  here's a snippet reporting a failure.

I tested the mainline .deb package for 5.3.13 and it did not exhibit
this issue. When I open the laptop lid after suspending by closing it
the cursor reliably displays within about 1 second and the lock screen
is shown within about another second. I further checked versions and
the last mainline .deb to exhibit the issue is 5.3.11. 5.3.12 works

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1835660] Re: initramfs unpacking failed

2020-02-29 Thread Dan Andreșan
Possible explanation and fix: in my case it seems the error message
appeared since I enabled secure boot (which I think was disabled when I
installed Ubuntu). Look below, from my journal:

Dec 05 15:07:52 elite kernel: secureboot: Secure boot could not be determined
(mode 0)
Dec 05 15:07:54 elite systemd[1]: secureboot-db.service: Succeeded.
Dec 05 15:14:19 elite kernel: secureboot: Secure boot enabled
Dec 05 15:14:21 elite systemd[1]: secureboot-db.service: Succeeded.

You can see that on December 5th I booted at 15:07 without secureboot
and starting with 15:14 with secureboot enabled.

And now, let's see when the error message appeared first:

$ journalctl|grep "unpacking failed"
Dec 05 15:14:19 elite kernel: Initramfs unpacking failed: Decoding failed

Now a possible fix (it was possible for me, it might be possible for you
too):

What I did is that I switched compression to gzip, the message
dissapeared, then back to lz4, still there is no sign of error (same
result as tom in #18). My guess it that there is no need to switch it to
gzip and back to lz4, but just regenerate initramfs (which we did after
changing compression) with "sudo update-initramfs -u".

Maybe this takes into account that now I have secureboot enabled and
generates a "compatible" initramfs.

Someone else should confirm if the fix works for them too, then I guess
this bug can be closed.

Bug description:

If I "update-initramfs" using gzip instead of lz, then boot up passes
  without decoding failed message.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1864871] Re: Failed to init Intel sound card in 20.04

2020-02-29 Thread Eugene Crosser
Correction: setting `snd_hda_intel.dmic_detect=0` does make
snd_hda_intel driver work (without microphone, as before).

However SOF driver that worked in eoan (5.3) kernel _with upstream SOF
firmware_ does not work in focal (5.4) kernel. Microphone _did_ work
with SOF.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1850654] Re: update-initramfs complains of missing amdgpu firmware files

2020-02-29 Thread jds
My 18.04 system is showing identical behavior to the above report.
Comment number 7 suggests that a new bug report will need to be filed to get
proper attention.

Bug description:
  SRU Justification

Impact: With 5.3 update-initramfs reports several missing amdgpu
  firmware files:

  update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-5.3.0-19-generic
W: Possible missing firmware /lib/firmware/amdgpu/vega20_ta.bin for module
amdgpu
W: Possible missing firmware /lib/firmware/amdgpu/raven_kicker_rlc.bin for
module amdgpu
W: Possible missing firmware /lib/firmware/amdgpu/navi10_mes.bin for module
amdgpu

Of these, only raven_kicker_rlc.bin has been added to upstream linux-
  firmware.

Fix: Add raven_kicker_rlc.bin to linux firmware, and remove the other
  files from modinfo for amdgpu.

Test Case: Once fixed, the warnings from update-initramfs should be
  gone.

Regression Potential: Adding a missing firmware is unlikely to break
any working hardware. Removing the other missing files from modinfo
will not cause regressions either, however if the firmware is added
later update-initramfs will not add the files to the initramfs until
the firmware is added back to modinfo.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1845048] Re: /etc/default/kdump-tools KDUMP_SYSCTL does not set sysctl params

2020-02-29 Thread Guilherme G. Piccoli
Thanks Dan for the report and Cascardo for finding the offender commit
that introduced this regression!

I think we have room for improvements here, my considerations are:
a) KDUMP_SYSCTL is a misleading name; it seems to be related with sysctls set
_when_ dumping, which is also an important thing to control. Despite this, the
option meaning was related to the kdump sysctl _triggers_.

b) Even by re-enabling this option we don't have a fine tuning
configuration of sysctls during the dump.

So, my idea to fix/improve the situation is: let's have a
KDUMP_PANIC_TRIGGERS variable (that defaults to panic_on_oops) and a
KDUMP_SYSCTL_ON_DUMP variable that overrides the desired sysctls set on
normal kernel when the kdump kernel boots (and which should defaults to
have hugepages disabled, since it's a known problem when kdumping to
have hugepages "consuming" the system memory).

Cheers,

Guilherme

Documentation, and past behavior, for kdump-tools was that the
KDUMP_SYSCTL variable in the /etc/default/kdump-tools file would be
applied to the system kernel params at kdump 'load'. However this is
no longer true, and those params are no longer applied to the system's
  kernel param settings.

  [test case]

  install linux-crashdump (and kdump-tools).

Edit the /etc/default/kdump-tools file to set the KDUMP_SYSCTL param
to something other than default, e.g.:

  KDUMP_SYSCTL="kernel.panic_on_oops=1 kernel.panic_on_warn=1"

reboot, or unload/reload kdump, to pick up the changes to the file.

Check if the panic_on_warn param is set:

  $ cat /proc/sys/kernel/panic_on_warn
  0

the problem does not seem to be with sysctl, as manually calling it
  does work:

  $ KDUMP_SYSCTL="kernel.panic_on_oops=1 kernel.panic_on_warn=1"
  $ cat /proc/sys/kernel/panic_on_warn
  0
  $ sudo sysctl -w $KDUMP_SYSCTL
  kernel.panic_on_oops = 1
  kernel.panic_on_warn = 1
  $ cat /proc/sys/kernel/panic_on_warn

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1865282] [NEW] Snap chromium - apparmor pulseAudio error message (20.04)

Comment: This is a fresh chromium installation and I've never manually
modified the pulseaudio interface however my pulseaudio configuration is
custom because of the bad default sound quality.

echo :06:00.0 > /sys/bus/pci/devices/:06:00.0/driver/unbind

It works with 4.15.0-76-generic kernel and it does not work with
4.15.0-88-generic kernel.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1861359] Re: swap storms kills interactive use

2020-02-29 Thread Andrea Righi
Seth, can you try to see if you can reproduce the problem with the
latest unstable kernel (5.4.0-17.21)? https://launchpad.net/~canonical-
kernel-team/+archive/ubuntu/unstable

I can't reproduce the problem with it. I have not verified yet, but I
suspect it might be related to this commit:

d92ff805127f mm: move_pages: report the number of non-attempted pages

Thanks!

Title:
  swap storms kills interactive use

  Thanks

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1861359] Re: swap storms kills interactive use

2020-02-29 Thread Andrea Righi
Many thanks for the reproducer Seth! I've been able to reproduce the
swapping issue on my laptop! Now I can investigate more on my side. I'll
keep you posted!

Title:
  swap storms kills interactive use

  Thanks

Title:
  brightness setting and sleep/suspend (echo mem > /sys/power/state) ,
  s2ram and s2disk fail for 5.4.0 and s2disk fail for 5.4.22

Status in linux-5.4 package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  1) After resuming from suspend (uswsusp/s2ram) and/or after resuming
from "echo mem > /sys/power/state" there is a black screen on laptop
after resume with 5.4.0-14-generic kernel only. Kernel seems to be
working as CTRL+ALT+F2 and CTRL+ALT+DEL restarts laptop.

   A) 3 Different combinations of this distro with other kernels work
  well:

kubunut20.04 + linux-image-5.3.0-40-generic
(copied from kubuntu 19.10 from /lib/modules/5.3.0-40-generic and
/boot/vmlinuz-5.3.0-40-generic)

  Installed from
  https://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v5.6-rc3/

kubuntu20.04 + linux-image-unsigned-5.5.6-050506-generic is working.
kubuntu20.04 + linux-image-unsigned-5.6.0-050600rc3-generic is working.

B) This kernel 5.4.0-14-generic when copied manually into kubuntu 19.10
behaves the same as in 20.04 (NOT WORKING for suspend to ram)

  2) setting brightness with keys on laptop keyboard does not work for this
kernel 5.4.0-14-generic only
Neither using this command line method
  marian@kubuntu2004:~/Downloads$ cat

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1861395] Re: system hang: i915 Resetting rcs0 for hang on rcs0

2020-02-29 Thread Andrea Righi
There was an off by one error in the patch backported to 5.4.0-16.19 (same with
my the test kernel). For those who wants to test it, please try the latest
kernel from the unstable ppa (5.4.0-17.21):
