[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1848534] Re: [Microsoft Hyper-V guest] System shows graphic artifacts for a moment, then text cursor for about minute and then starts
I reproduced this with Win10 x64 up to date on 4/11/2020 and the stock "quick create" versions of Ubuntu 18.04 and 19.10 as referenced and selected from the Hyper-V manager. Default options all the way. No updates installed after initial installation. This machine has AMD Ryzen 7 3800X and 32GB memory, NVMe SSD system drive -- it's fast. Default network adapter for the VMs. ipv6 enabled or disabled on underlying NIC and the vEthernet default switch (I tried both ways). 18.04 goes from "start" to X login in 11 seconds, including having to press through a console "error: no such device: root / press any key to continue" glitch. 19.10 goes from start to a Grub menu in about 3 seconds. 11 more seconds through console message about Spectre mitigation, then the Ubuntu splash screen of 5 dots on purple background, then console cursor holds for about 1:40. Then X login finally. System load during the long delay on network, disk, CPU under 5% during this time. Then suddenly a flurry of console messages followed by X login window. Seems very clear that the boot process is waiting for a long failed timeout somehow before proceeding. By accident I discovered the following with 19.10. Select "system startup" from the grub menu. Result is Windows logo screen "Hyper-V UEFI / No boot devices were found." The "restart" button is not functional, have to "power off" the VM because "shutdown" fails. Re-power on without closing the connection window, and 19.10 proceeds through same sequence from "start" to X login in about 12 seconds: spectre mitigation message on console, Ubuntu splash, console cursor, then possibly the flurry of console messages (but so fast invisible), then X login. I can get through the sequence above of grub "system startup" then power-off, then restart to the X login from scratch in 25 seconds, whereas about 120 seconds if I just start and wait through the timeout. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1848534 Title: [Microsoft Hyper-V guest] System shows graphic artifacts for a moment, then text cursor for about minute and then starts Status in gdm3 package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: AFter upgrade system shows graphic artefacts for a moment and then text cursor for about minute (it looks like hanged) and then starts. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1872001] Re: 5.3.0-46-generic - i915 - frequent GPU hangs / resets rcs0
This is probably the same as bug #1871867, can you confirm? I've had this bug ever since upgrading to Ubuntu 18.10 (i.e. the Linux 5.3 kernel series). However before the 5.3.0-46-generic update (when I was on 5.3.0-45-generic and earlier versions), I had this issue (freezes of around ~10s) only a few times per day. After the 5.3.0-46-generic update, this bug happened several times per hour, sometimes repeating in the timeframe of minutes. Though I only rarely get the "GPU HANG: ecode 9:0:0x, hang on rcs0" message prior to the "Resetting rcs0 for hang on rcs0" message, for what's it worth. To put this into numbers, from April 4 to April 9 (daily usage), I only got 6 freezes, whereas since the update to 5.3.0-46-generic (which I performed on April 10), I've got 122 hangs already. This makes using the whole system really annoying. There are some interesting discussions about this bug on https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=250765, though note that there seem to be multiple bugs and it got worse with later kernel versions, including unrecoverable freezes on kernel 5.4 (which were reported in Ubuntu as bug #1861395). I've reverted to Linux 4.19 LTS mainline kernel from https://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/ for now, and haven't had any more freezes yet. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1872001 Title: 5.3.0-46-generic - i915 - frequent GPU hangs / resets rcs0 Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: Hi, Since update to HWE kernel 5.3.0-46-generic I am experiencing frequent (every couple of minutes) GPU hangs and reset manifesting as 2-3 seconds freezes of the GUI (other than the mouse pointer). From kernel-5.4 (focal kernel), the driver soc-skl is disabled by default, and there is no users report any issues on it. So let us disable soc-skl in the eoan and osp1 kernel too. The patch for eoan kernel doesn't remove the modules because looks like the abi folder are not controlled by git. This will break the modulecheck, so if this patch could be merged, please help remove those modules: snd-soc-skl snd-soc-skl-ipc snd-soc-skl-ssp-clk [Impact] If soc-skl driver is loaded ahead of sof driver, the sof could not work anymore, we need to blacklist the soc-skl manually [Fix] Like the focal kernel, we disable the soc_skl driver in the kernel config [Test Case] Tested on Lenovo and Dell machines which has dmic, the sof driver could be loaded successfully. Tested on the machinces without the dmic, the legacy hda driver worked well as before. [Regression Risk] Low, Focal kernel and mainine-5.5, 5.6-rc kernel all disabled this dirver; and We have not met a machine need the soc_skl driver yet; and Intel claim that the sof could replace the soc_skl driver. In the -41 kernel, we introduced a patch from stable kernel, that make the sof driver crash, and there is a fix patch in the 5.6-rc1, and this fix patch is already in the stable and is merged to focal kernel, now we backport this patch to Eoan kernel if -42 doesn't introduce this fix patch from stable. The patch introduced the crash: commit 063821115e02229d5fd3de31bad270d5e30aeb41 Author: Dragos Tarcatu Date: Mon Dec 9 18:39:38 2019 -0600 ASoC: topology: Check return value for snd_soc_add_dai_link() BugLink: https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1861929 [ Upstream commit 76d2703649321c296df7ec0dafd50add96215de4 ] snd_soc_add_dai_link() might fail. This situation occurs for instance in a very specific use case where a PCM device and a Back End DAI link are given identical names in the topology. When this happens, soc_new_pcm_runtime() fails and then snd_soc_add_dai_link() returns -ENOMEM when called from soc_tplg_fe_link_create(). Because of that, the link will not get added into the card list, so any attempt to remove it later ends up in a panic. Fix that by checking the return status and free the memory in case of an error. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1867983] Re: Computer is frozen after suspend
For the fun, I compiled Ubuntu-5.3.0-48.41 with 2535c05ffda6d344eb4917178a8ecdf7835e87c2 reverted, since it's a small change. It works. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1850654] Re: update-initramfs complains of missing amdgpu firmware files
Hello, I have just installed a fresh Kubuntu 18.04.4 on a Dell Laptop 5575, with a AMD Ryzen 7 2700U with Radeon Vega Mobile Gfx running Kernel 5.3.0-46-generic. I was update-ing the initramfs. update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-5.3.0-46-generic W: Possible missing firmware /lib/firmware/amdgpu/vega20_ta.bin for module amdgpu W: Possible missing firmware /lib/firmware/amdgpu/navi10_mes.bin for module amdgpu I would like to create an apport report, though I am not sure in which package it belongs too. is it xserver-xorg-video-amdgpu or under xserver-xorg-video-amdgpu-hwe-18.04 or a diffrent packgage entirely. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux-firmware in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1850654 Title: update-initramfs complains of missing amdgpu firmware files Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in linux-firmware package in Ubuntu: Fix Released Status in linux source package in Bionic: Invalid Status in linux-firmware source package in Bionic: Fix Released Status in linux source package in Eoan: Confirmed Status in linux-firmware source package in Eoan: Fix Released Bug description: SRU Justification Impact: With 5.3 update-initramfs reports several missing amdgpu firmware files: update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-5.3.0-19-generic W: Possible missing firmware /lib/firmware/amdgpu/vega20_ta.bin for module amdgpu W: Possible missing firmware /lib/firmware/amdgpu/raven_kicker_rlc.bin for module amdgpu W: Possible missing firmware /lib/firmware/amdgpu/navi10_mes.bin for module amdgpu Of these, only raven_kicker_rlc.bin has been added to upstream linux- firmware. Fix: Add raven_kicker_rlc.bin to linux firmware, and remove the other files from modinfo for amdgpu. Test Case: Once fixed, the warnings from update-initramfs should be gone. Regression Potential: Adding a missing firmware is unlikely to break any working hardware. Removing the other missing files from modinfo will not cause regressions either, however if the firmware is added later update-initramfs will not add the files to the initramfs until the firmware is added back to modinfo.
