Title:
Can't access gpio mapped memory on focal armhf server on pi

Status in linux-raspi package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid
Status in linux-raspi source package in Focal:
  Triaged

Bug description:
On released (and apt updated) 20.04 armhf preinstalled server on
Pi3B+, we cannot use pigpio C program to access memory map for gpio.
Customer says the same code works fine on 18.04.

  ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo ./pigpio/kyle.o
2020-07-31 18:36:11 initPeripherals: mmap gpio failed (Operation not
permitted)

Details on code below, but the executable is attached, and the
customer says this fairly represents their code usage.

  ubuntu@ubuntu:~/pigpio$ uname -a
  Linux ubuntu 5.4.0-1015-raspi #15-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jul 10 05:37:25 UTC 2020
armv7l armv7l armv7l GNU/Linux

We thought perhaps these kernel configs were involved:

  CONFIG_DEVMEM=y
  CONFIG_ARCH_HAS_DEVMEM_IS_ALLOWED=y
  CONFIG_STRICT_DEVMEM=y

... and we modified the kernel cmdline with the following, but the result was
the same.
  iomem=relaxed strict-devmem=0

The program is simply this https://github.com/joan2937/pigpio/ with make &
make install
  then this c file:

  #include
  #include
  #include

  int main(void){

  gpioInitialise();

  }

  built with gcc -Wall -I/home/ubuntu/pigpio -pthread -o kyle.o kyle.c
  -lpigpio -lrt

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1856608] Re: [Regression] usb usb2-port2: Cannot enable. Maybe the USB cable is bad?

2020-08-02 Thread Bamoqi
I can confirm this issue in 20.04 linux-image-5.4.0-42. This message
only appear for my usb3.1 gen1 type-c hub when it is connected on boot.
If I re-plug the hub after boot, the message stops. It doesn't appear
for another connected usb3 type-a hub.

In /var/log/syslog, it prints every 4 seconds:

the USB cable is bad?

2020-08-02 Thread You-Sheng Yang
Looks like it's a duplicate of already expired bug 1850502. Since I'm
able to reproduce this by playing YouTube video streaming, I'm to set
that bug as a duplicate of this instead.

Title:
  RTL8822BE Bluetooth disconnects with error CTRL-EVENT-BEACON-LOSS -
  rtw88

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
  Hi,

  Os: Ubuntu 19.10
  kernel :5.3.0-23-generic
  driver: rtw88
  Wifi HW module: RTL8822BE

02:00.0 Network controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8822BE
802.11a/b/g/n/ac WiFi adapter
Subsystem: AzureWave RTL8822BE 802.11a/b/g/n/ac WiFi adapter
   Kernel driver in use: rtw_pci
   Kernel modules: rtwpci

I am facing intermittent Bluetooth disconnection issue when connected
to a Bluetooth speaker, my Bluetooth speaker disconnects with error
  "wlp2s0: CTRL-EVENT-BEACON-LOSS" (kernel: 5.3.0-23-generic), also
audio shutters when music played via android phone and getting this
error in Syslog "[pulseaudio] module-loopback.c: Too many underruns,
  increasing latency to 205.00 ms".

But Bluetooth works perfectly fine with kernel 4.19.67 (Debian 10.2 )
The only difference was in kernel 4.19.67  the driver loaded was
r8822be, so the issue is with the driver rtw_pci which is loaded in
  kernel: 5.3.0-23 ??

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1889342] Re: Thunderbolt Dock Loses Monitors

2020-08-02 Thread rhpot1991
I upgraded my kernel to 5.6.0-1020-oem in order to test. The issue is
better then, but not resolved. When using the lock screen one out of
the two monitors is lost.

This errors are in dmesg:
[257474.965612] [drm:intel_dp_link_training_clock_recovery [i915]] *ERROR*
failed to get link status
[257474.974761] [drm:intel_cpu_fifo_underrun_irq_handler [i915]] *ERROR* CPU

RTL8723bs bluetooth not working on 20.04

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
I have Ubuntu 20.04 installed on atom-based tablet ACER Aspire Switch 10. And
bluetooth does not work. In fact it looks like ubuntu does not recognize
bluetooth HW at all. But the system does have bluetooth module which under
windows is recognized as RTK8723 (ACPI\RTK8723\some-id)
At the same time WiFi works without issues (the same module, if I am not
mistaken).

Title:
System hangs at reboot or poweroff. kworker blocked at dp_altmode_work

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
  Expected:
  System reboots/powers off.

  Actual:
System hangs with the plymouth bootsplash with the Kubuntu logo. Pressing
escape shows `[OK] Reached target Reboot`. `journalctl -b -1` shows at the end.
  ```
  May 28 16:33:21 jordan-ThinkPad systemd-journald[454]: Journal stopped
  ```
Letting the computer continue to idle, an error message shows up. I've
attached a picture because the error message does not show up in any logs.

  Possibly a duplicate of
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1872817, though
the other user did not mention the same symptoms.

And your kernel log shows similar problems. It might be a problem with
the motherboard, a specific USB port, or with the mouse.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1890050] Re: Mouse malfunction when launching steam

2020-08-02 Thread Daniel van Vugt
The attached XorgLog.txt shows the mouse is repeatedly:

[ 28256.417] (II) event4 - USB OPTICAL MOUSE: device removed

So this might be a hardware problem or a kernel bug. Try plugging it
into a different port, or try a different mouse.

Status in Ubuntu MATE:

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
After upgrading Ubuntu Mate to 20.04 , my wifi crashed on Lenovo legion
Y530. The strange thing is that it connects to the network, i have internet for
some time (usually between 1 and 10 minutes) and then it disconnects.
After that, the applet shows me something like device not ready and i can
only restart the computer to connect. Then it crashes again...
I also tried a fresh install with the same results.
I used 19.04 and 19.10 on the same laptop as my primary operating system and
wifi worked flawlessly.

Since I do my work on this laptop i was forced to downgrade back to 19.10 for
now.
This is my lshw -C network (from 19.10 If I remember correctly it was
RTL8822BE also in 20.04)

Title:
Wakeup the system by touching the touchpad

Status in HWE Next:
  New
Status in linux-oem-5.6 package in Ubuntu:
  New
Status in linux-oem-5.6 source package in Focal:
  Fix Committed

Bug description:
  [Impact]
Can't wake up by touching the touchpad.

  [Fix]
  1.gpio: With 'commit 461c1a7d4733 ("gpiolib: override irq_enable/disable")'
gpiolib overrides irqchip's irq_enable and irq_disable callbacks. If
irq_disable
callback is implemented then genirq takes unlazy path to disable irq.
Underlying irqchip
may not want to implement irq_disable callback to lazy disable irq
when client drivers invokes disable_irq(). By overriding irq_disable
callback,
gpiolib ends up always unlazy disabling IRQ.
Allow gpiolib to lazy disable IRQs by overriding irq_disable callback only
if irqchip implemented irq_disable. In cases where irq_disable is not
implemented irq_mask is overridden. Similarly override irq_enable callback
only if irqchip implemented irq_enable otherwise irq_unmask is overridden.
  2. hid: Many laptops can be woken up from Suspend-to-Idle by touchpad. This is
also the default behavior on other OSes.
However, if touchpad and touchscreen contact to each other when lid is
closed, wakeup events can be triggered inadventertly.
So let's disable the wakeup by default, but enable the wakeup capability
so users can enable it at their own discretion.

  [test]
With the patch and manually enable HID's power/wakeup, the system can wake up
by touching the touchpad.

  [Regression Potential]
Low. The two patches are already landed in the upstream.

Bug description:
  [Impact]
After suspend then restart, the System would hang during shutdown.

  [Fix]
The commit has pushed to upstream but still wait for the maintainer of IOMMU
to apply.

https://lore.kernel.org/linux-iommu/20200721001713.24282-1-baolu...@linux.intel.com/

Skip the TE disabling for the quirky gfx dedicated iommu and
the system would not hang during shutdown.

  [test]
With the patch, the machine restart successfully.

  [Regression Potential]
low, the patch just skip the TE disabling and wouldn't affect the normal
usage.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1886366] Re: USB External Drive Stalls and Timeouts

2020-08-02 Thread Nicholas Krause
Seems to be fixed on kernel 5.7.0. so I'm closing for now as it has not
happened for the last 2 weeks and the timeout would occur every 2 to 3
days before.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1850130] Re: zpools fail to import after reboot on fresh install of eoan

2020-08-02 Thread far...@yandex.ru
Howtofixit

1) replace “Exec zfs mount -a” to “Exec zpool import -a” in systemd
service file for zfs

2) uncomment “#zfs” to “zfs” in /lib/modules-load/somefile

3) make snapshot for pool with problems, attach snapshot as pool to
required path

Now I'm not near my laptop so I don't remember exactly. I'll write to
you tomorrow.

Bug description:
Fresh installation of stock Ubuntu 19.10 Eoan with experimental root on ZFS.
System has existing zpools with data.

Installation is uneventful. First boot with no problems. Updates
applied. No other changes from fresh installation. Reboot.

External pool 'tank' imports with no errors. Reboot.

External pool has failed to import on boot. In contrast bpool and
rpool are ok. Manually re-import 'tank' with no issues. I can see both
'tank' and its path in /dev/disk/by-id/ in /etc/zfs/zpool.cache.
  Reboot.

'tank' has failed to import on boot. It is also missing from
/etc/zfs/zpool.cache. Is it possible that the cache is being re-
generated on reboot, and the newly imported pools are getting erased
from it? I can re-import the pools again manually with no issues, but
  they don't persist between re-boots.

Installing normally on ext4 this is not an issue and data pools import
automatically on boot with no further effort.

Title:
KDE GUI freeze on high disk IO

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
I've got massive problems with GUI on my PC.

The attached logs are from the following setting:
  - high disk load (f3write)
  - kernel 4.15.0-1050-oem (the only 4x kernel available in eoan)
  - no swap available

These are the parameters (disk load, kernel, swap) I am fiddling with
to find out the cause, see below.

  In general
  - the problem happens once a day with any 5.0 or 5.3 kernel from eoan repo
  - more likely to happen with high disk or CPU load, but not necessarily.
  - less likely with the 4.x kernel mentioned above.

I just installed the following kernels from kernel-ppa:
  5.3.10-050310-generic
  5.4.0-050400rc6-generic
  5.4.0-997-generic (drm-intel-next)
Now I am waiting for the freeze to occur again.

The problem started about half a year ago.
There have been three changes that happened at the time and could be the cause
  - switch to kernel 5.x
  - update to Ubuntu 19.4
  - swapped motherboard, CPU and RAM.

The hassle started with the following scenario, repeated often:
  - high disk load
  - PC becomes laggy
  - soon dies/freezes

The longer I waited, the deeper the lockdown went. but I don't know the exact
details.
The first cause I found was kswapd running amok and take the system with it.
Workaround: add swap space.

Now the problem shifted: Whenever I got high disk load (eg dd 100 GB
of data) the kernel swaps likle crazy and makes the GUI first lag soon
freeze. but no excessive CPU load any more, as kswapd does not go
  crazy.

  Again I found a workaround:
the above mentioned 4.x kernel. In this case the GUI lags as expected from a
heavily swapping system. nothing more.
but still sometimes the GUI simply freezes (the error reported at the top)

Another workaround is to completely remove swap. Let's see what
happens, if kswapd goes amok again.

I am not sure as how these problems are related.

I did extensive hardware check like
  - memtest86 newest version, no "may be vulnerable to high frequency row
hammering"
  - smart

do you suggest any burn in test suites?

  thanks

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1852001] Re: KDE GUI freeze on high disk IO

2020-08-02 Thread JPT
@ccheney
Regardless if my crashes are gone, my experience is that having a swap file in
recent Linux is deadly. If Linux starts swapping only a little then it's hardly
usable any more. I believe this is because of the algorithm that decides which
pages to remove from memory.

Your observation with 50% RAM could be related to VMLIM. VMLIM says how
much of the RAM may be used for programs. By default this is half your
RAM. The other half is for cache and buff only. (as I understood, this
may be inaccurate). Try other values for VMLIM.

For crashes after suspend add: rcu_nocbs=0-N(number of cores -1) and
idle=nowait as grub parameters update-grub and reboot you also need
kernel 5.4 or higher with latest stable firmware.

Bug description:
  CPU: Ryzen 5 2500U
  VGA: Radeon 535
  Notebook: Acer Aspire A315

This is a brand new notebook on the market with Ryzen 5/Radeon.
The default kernel of Ubuntu(18.04) hangs at loading with message:

tsc: Refined TSC clocksource calibration: 1996.250 MHz
  clocksource: tsc: mask: 0x max_cycles: (...), max_idle_ns:
(...)
  Soft lockup

Using pci=noacpi kernel parameter kernel loads without any problem but
my notebook produces more heat than on Win10. If I know right Acer
notebooks need ACPI to the correct power management.

The same thing happens on mainline 4.17,4.18rc1-2.
BIOS upgrade to the latest version: 1.08 hasn't helped

This problem has been reported upstream:
  https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=200087

The latest correctly working kernel was 4.13.* but the heat problem
  was present with this too.

  RTL8822BE Wifi [10ec:b822] subsystem [17aa:b023] crashes on 20.04 on
  Lenovo Legion Y530

In "Displays", the dropdowns for Resolution only has 640x480 for

  Questions:
How will I find out that this bug has been fixed?
I understand the issue is the NVIDIA proprietary drivers. Will any AMD GPU
work or are there specific video cards I should look at?
Is there a site that recommends video cards for Linux?

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1874567] Re: [nvidia] Rotating secondary monitor to portrait fails, results in landscape

2020-08-02 Thread Benjamin Jacob Reji
Regarding bug mentioned in Side note 2 of
#20 Comment

I face the same issue, and am able to fix it via the fractional scaling method.
I was able to reproduce this over two separate clean installs on my machine.

Also following #20 comment helped solved the display rotating issue.
Thank you devs for the fix.
Regards

Bug description:
  [ Impact ]

I have two monitors, with the secondary one rotated in a portrait
orientation. Using the nvidia 440 drivers, the orientation is not
applied when configuring in gnome settings (the displays go blank for
a second, and then reappear in landscape orientation).

Using nvidia settings, I can set the monitor rotation and offset
correctly, however these settings do not persist on next boot (even
when selecting to save to xorg.conf).

When using the nouveau drivers, the orientation is applied correctly
in gnome settings, and is persisted.

  [ Test case ]

  1. Install nvidia drivers
  2. Configure an external monitor to be in portrait mode in
gnome-control-center
  3. Apply the configuration
  4. Expect configuration is properly working

  [ Regression potential ]

Wrong screen size is set and panning is used.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1888570] Re: poweroff not working after apt upgrade

2020-08-02 Thread Günter Neiß
OMG, Your comment: "#19 and forward assume..."
Points into the right direction.
When I install the "good" kernel-DEBs You provided the problem pops up...
This happens although the "real" kernel deb
(linux-image-unsigned-5.3.0-61-generic_5.3.0-61.55_amd64.deb) was not installed
due to conflicts against my signed kernel of the same version.

I then compare the snapshots made by SystemBack of these two versions.
There are a lot of differences mainly the initrd (in boot) and althougth all
*.ko inside modules.

I remember that every try to install something that resuts in a kernel
update (dkms and/or update-initrd) the problem ocurs.

I therefore do a manual
sudo update-initramfs -k all -u
without installing anything else.
-> Problem pops up!

This happens even when I use my oldest system snapshot I have :-(

So how to proceed ?
(I am thinking about doing a fresh install of Ubuntu 20.4 LTS, but have to
check if all tools I use will be available... FreeCad wasn't the first time I
checked).

Title:
poweroff not working after apt upgrade

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  System-Information:
  Description: Ubuntu 18.04.4 LTS
  Release: 18.04
  ##
  Working packages:
  - Kernel 5.3.0.61.114
  - linux-firmware 1.173.18

Problem occurs when upgrading (anyone of) these packages
  - Kernel 5.3.0-62.56
  - linux-firmware 1.173.19

I use an Acer Aspire E5-771G Notebook with a fresh installation of Ubuntu
18.04.
Till the last upgrade everything works as expected.
The last upgrade brings two new kernel versions (as mentioned above).
Now the system stucks at the very end of the power down sequence.
Even SysReq-O will not work (only SysReq-B will work).

Because I use Systemback, I time shift to the previous system and then
install package by package to see what will bring in the problem.
If I install any of the mentioned kernel updates the problem will show up.

I had ask the above question on "askubuntu.com".
I was directed to upgrade the BIOS, But even after doing so the problem still
persist.

I am not sure if I do it right (APT pinning).
  I currently create a file /etc/apt/prefereces.d/kernel.

I add an entry for every of the following packages to block the
version mentioned above (Pin: version: Pin-Priority: -1):

  linux-generic-hwe-18.04
  linux-headers-generic-hwe-18.04
  linux-image-generic-hwe-18.04
  linux-modules-nvidia-440-generic-hwe-18.04
  linux-firmware

After doing so "apt list --upgradeable" will not list the packages in
question and the PC will power down normally (and SysReq-O WILL work).

In the meanwhile there are newer versions of the kernel online, so the above
mentioned pinning will allow the newer kernels to get installed and the problem
will show up again.
So I block these versions too.

BTW: Due to the stuck I am able to see some other error messages that are not
reported in the journal. The very last 3-5 lines show:
shutdown [1]: Failed to wait for process: Protocol error
These lines are present although in the working kernels, but hard to see,
because the system powers down some ms after these lines are displayed!
This problem seams to be solved more than one year ago in the upstream kernel!

For crashes after suspend add: rcu_nocbs=0-N(number of cores -1) and
idle=nowait as grub parameters update-grub and reboot you also need 5.4

This is a brand new notebook on the market with Ryzen 5/Radeon.

  What is expected:
The external screen should display the image (as in step 1)

  What happened instead:
The system thinks the display is connected (see the xrandr output), but the

that, the external monitor comes back.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1690085]

2020-08-02 Thread ashesh.ambasta
Even with screensavers enabled and displays never going to sleep; I just
experienced a crash on idle.

Here's the logs (https://pastebin.com/D7SEJn9J). I did change the
display configuration just before leaving my desk (with xrandr) which
explain some of these logs. But I can see nothing from the kernel etc.

The system just dies.

  Hi,

We aregetting various kernel crash on a pretty new config.
We're using Ryzen 1800X CPU with X370 Gaming Pro Carbon MB (7A32V1) using
latest BIOS available (1.52)

We are running Ubuntu 17.04 (amd64), we've tried different kernel version,
native one and releases from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/ too.
  Tested kernel version:

  native 17.04 kernel
  4.10.15

Issues are the same, we're getting random freeze on the machine.

I still get freezes when resuming from suspend when using kde and opengl
as a compositor, but this is not related to this issure, or is it?

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1875236] Re: Different kernel gives different RAM results

2020-08-02 Thread Maxim Akimov
After installing updates EFI boot order's changed - Ubuntu now the first
(previously Windows was the first). And now when booting Ubuntu
recognizes all available memory (both 5.8 and 5.4 kernels). When I boot
Windows as second in EFI boot order - Windows shows only 1.7 Gb
available memory. So It seems that there is a bug in BIOS of my laptop
